Best Tacos in San Antonio | Eater Austin

"Mornings at Patty’s can get pretty busy, which is partly due to its amply stuffed breakfast tacos and quick, friendly service. The dining room has a nice, homey feel to it, which makes for a great sit-down breakfast spot, but if you’re in a hurry, the restaurant has a counter inside dedicated just to to-go orders." - Polly Anna Rocha

Google
This Authentic style Mexican food restaurant was very good. Energetic staff, extra large portions and fast service! If your order chips and salsa, you’ll need lots of friends to help you eat this extra large portion!

Haven't been here in a while and decided to go with the fam ✨ and it was okay. I guess. I think out of everything on my plate which was puffy taco plate. I liked the beans the most but they basically gave me a cup of beans 🥴 kinda odd but i guess🥴 And just to keep it real, I didnt like puffy tacos. I got chicken and beef. And all i gotta say is that, I should of just got Crispy tacos cause baby, those puffy taco shells were hard an crispy asf 👎 and only a scoop of chicken an beef in my tacos....🤨 The fam said there plates were okay. Price was kinda high too. Not sure if i will be returning.

Google
First time ordering. Ordered the biscuit and gravy plate with over easy eggs. Biscuits came hard with no gravy lol, eggs came scrambled with no cheese, my potatoes were fridge cold. Lmao if i could order it again id throw away right in front of their faces. Terrible experience and food. Don't bother.

Google
A non franchise Mexican American restaurant located minutes away from downtown San Antonio. A good go to restaurant for breakfast and lunch with early closing hours, so get there before 2pm. Pretty solid food, so can’t go wrong with any choice. Service was good and attentive.

Google
Good food and at a decent price. Food was fresh and timely. Wait staff was friendly and helpful. Get there early sometimes there is wait. The chips and salsa where super fresh. And Ranchero sauce was super good.

Google
This is the 2nd time we've been here, and the food and service were fine, but it's always way too cold, and your food gets cold very quickly. The prices are too high. They are still charging $2 extra on plates with eggs, which is ridiculous! Price gouging at its best! I'm not sure if we will make a 2rd visit or not. We came to another Mexican restaurant this weekend and weren't charged that extra $2 per plate, so we'll have to wait and see.

Google
Little mom and pop restaurant that has a comfortable environment. Our waitress was attentive and made sure our drinks didn't go empty. Food came quick and was hot. Definitely be back for more.

Yelp
I was driving by this morning and decided to stop and give this place a try . I decided to order a papas chorizo and cheese taco on flour . The taco was delicious and the only regret I had was that I only ordered one taco lol . The service was fast and I received my food within 5 minutes . The restaurant is nicely decorated inside which made it made it a pleasant feeling . This place gets my approval!

Yelp
Loud, crowded, cheap, friendly. What more could you want from a breakfast taco place? There were a hundred (no joke) things to choose from on the double sided menu, and three breakfast tacos plus a bottomless coffee was less than $15. The portions are pretty big and came out quickly. It was a little tough for me because I'm not a flour tortilla girl, but they tasted fresh and the insides of the taco were very tasty. There were 8 of us, and the place was packed. But we were still served (bonus points if you speak Spanish, it will be better than pointing at the menu and trying to shout your order) and they were great about refilling coffee. This is your very basic place, so don't expect fancy, but do expect good food and friendly service.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place, but my wife went here today for breakfast and she got very sick off the bacon I don't know if it was bad or under cooked!! So please make sure your food is fully cooked because I don't want to get sick on my next visit

Yelp
Ate lunch on Wednesday with my sister and friends. This was my first visit to Patty's restaurant and the food was great! Puffy Tacos are my favorite and they didn't disappoint. The puffy taco tortillas were perfectly fried and the inside ingredients were just right, not too much lettuce. The refried beans were bland but the Spanish rice was excellent. The large beverage was just enough, I didn't have to order a second round. RECOMMENDATION: Patty's is great for your Mexican cravings!
google avatar

Santos G.

Yelp
The tacos here are top tier no frills old school Tex-Mex. Great service and huge portions with the green salsa at the table being the star of the show. I highly recommend this place if you like no frills old school Tex-Mex food.

Yelp
Loved this place!! Came to have a breakfast date with the husband. Coffee was endless and the staff was friendly. Over medium eggs were on point!! And that's saying something because not a lot of places are great at it. I don't believe sugar free syrup for the pancakes/waffles is available though. The staff was efficient the whole way starting with seating and taking orders through cleaning up after people have left their tables. Everyone was on their game today and it showed. The food was really good too. Only thing I personally didn't enjoy very much was the sausage patty. Tasted like it was a previously frozen item you can grab from the grocery store. But everything else was good so no hate whatsoever. We will definitely be coming back to try more items and of course visit with such a great staff. Keep up the great work everyone!!

Yelp
Get there early or get in line. This HOUSE gets packed. 9am and the wait is on. Lucky for me, I was on the VIP list. This visit wasn't just for my enjoyment but also support as they switched POS SYSTEM to Toast. As you know I tell it how it is. Customer service is on point. The waitress was friendly and always smiling. She didn't rush us and answered all questions we had about the menu. She also came by to refill our coffee in perfect times. As a former Kitchen Manager I expect great quality foods. This starts with a tasting of the foods I order. I ordered the chilaquiles with red sauce and added 2 over medium eggs. The Chilaquiles come with beans, potatoes and tortillas. This Place has been open for 38years and I can see why. Or should I say taste why. The red sauces was delicious. Eggs cooked perfectly. And the rest was good. I shall return to try the barbacoa and menudo. Our house tradition for Sunday breakfast..

Liz S.

Yelp
Where do I start: - lemonade was water I can see where it was topped off with water (water with lemon could've had more flavor that the lemonade I was served and then they wanted to charge extra for a refill) - salsa no flavor and was watery - food had no flavor - chips and salsa is extra When we got two receipts there was no explanation. Then I noticed it was for the chips and salsa. I used to like this place it's just too inconsistent to keep returning.

Jacob B.

Yelp
literally D1 first round draft pick tacos order their breakfast tacos and you will be genuinly impressed by how filling and reasonably priced they are. In an age where everyone and everything is trying to rip you off, this place NEEDS more support. I order these tacos like twice a week. Yeah. They're that good.
google avatar

Yelp
Menu is NOT up to date and is misleading. I ordered 3 tacos w/ a side of onions & cilantro, and guac by phone. I forgot to ask for the amount bc I didn't think much about the total. When I came to pick up my food, she said it was $22. I asked "why so much?" She said each taco is 4$!!! She said that the menu was on their website. Didn't think much about going to the website bc I saw the menu on this app. Don't trust everything you see on this app clearly bc it can be outdated! I still payed it for it, but damn! #annoyed

Belinda E.

Yelp
Food is not good. Overcooked over easy eggs and over salted rice. It was nasty. The flour tortillas were powdery. It's just random and inconsistent, it can be good one day and the next it's not.

Yelp
Patty's Taco House Patty's Taco House is an authentic Mexican restaurant. You can tell by the people inside the restaurant how dirty it is inside and the menu selection. Our server was not that great because I had to ask twice for something. I don't really expect authentic Mexican restaurants to have good service even Chinese. I ordered the Mexican plate so I could try as many things they serve. The plate is huge with 3 different choices with rice refried beans and flour or corn tortillas. The taste is kinda similar to Taco Bueno, or Taco Bell but a tiny bit better in quality and more authentic menu. The Mexican plate had a crispy taco which was soggy on one side and crispy on the other. Because the taco shell is not a tortilla chip but a deep fried soft corn tortilla. The ground beef inside the taco is flavorful. The Chalupas or (tostadas) are a flat crispy corn shell topped with lettuce tomatoes and meat and was not bad. The enchiladas are different then other enchiladas. The tortilla is less soft then a regular enchilada it has more chew here. They top it off with sauce and they are not baked for that long. They serve tortillas with your meal. You can choose from flour and corn, but the corn tortilla is less fluffy then the flour. They make their tortillas in house so they taste warm and fresh. I liked the flour better then the corn because it was not as fluffy but the corn is more authentic. The fajita beef was tender and had good flavor with grilled onions and bell peppers; It tasted only ok and the same as any other Mexican restaurant. The intestines and pig feet soup smelled bad but tasted really good. The aroma of the lungs and feet are in the taste. It tastes like it smells. Overall good flavor and different texture from the pig feet and intestines. The flavor is like a stew. Overall this place was ok and nothing surprised me. This place taste similar to a chain Mexican restaurant. Only different is that they have a more authentic menu.

Yelp
So I went this past Saturday I had a carne guisada with cheese and a chorizo and papa very delicious

Jeannette Z.

Yelp
Food was very good and hot. Portions were full on the plate. Tortillas were also homemade, coffee was also very good and was filled often.

Yelp
I have been coming here since I was a little girl with my Grandpa! We love the food and the service! Great coffee! This is our date spot we always visit

Yelp
Was pretty busy, so decided to check it out, the hostess was a little stand offish, but it's the holidays so I get it. Anyway, our waiter was okay, brought out half our order then minutes later the rest. She seemed down as well. I ordered the French toast and they were really good along with the pork patties, they were really good, my boyfriend had the country rancheros, it was actually really good! The tortillas were really good, we also shared a machocado taco, which was good as well. Not our favorite but it's a great place to stop by and try.

Yelp
Homemade tortillas, mom and pop taco house. Lemonade and tea are good, place is always packed.

Alexis H.

Yelp
I'm always in the area cause I drop my son off at his grandmothers before I go to work. Today I decided to try the taco place I always drive by. Immediately when I walked in I was greeted and seated. The restaurant is really clean. The art work on the windows are adorable. I had a simple bean and cheese and sweet tea with potatoes. You can always tell how good a restaurant is by its tea and bean and cheese and they were both really good. Will definitely be telling family members to try this place. Thanks for the great service guys!
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Horrible slow services waited 20 mins before I even got my tacos , other people were giving their food before us and they ordered 5 mins after us, not to mention the packaged tortillas. The tacos didn't have any flavor should of asked for a side of flavor to go with them.
google avatar

Briana S.

Yelp
First and foremost, HUGE to-go cups!!! Gotta love a mom and pop restaurant! The service was fast, food was great, and total was inexpensive! I survive almost solely off of chilaquiles con salsa verde, so I highly recommend this classic or else the cheese enchiladas! I'm certain anything on the menu would be great. Parking here may be a bit of an issue when the place is busier, but it wasn't a problem during a mid week lunch break. Definitely check this place out for a low key breakfast/lunch date. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Balde P.

Yelp
This place use to be good NOT anymore!!! 1. Waitress was not attentive, looked distracted the whole time, brought out our plates one at a time, and tortillas came out late. 2. Tortillas are NOT homemade. Definitely out of package. 3. Beef enchilada plate sucked. Beans very watery, rice hard and old, beef had potatoes in it. 4. They dont give chips and salsa only upon request. Even then you pay for it. Chips are seasoned with seasoning and alot of salt I hated it. And salsa is more like tomato puree and sauce mixed with a can of Rotel. Very gross. 5. WAY OVER PRICED NOT WORTH. They are not what they use to be time to close up shop!

roxanne C.

Yelp
Great food and great prices. The wait staff is always friendly and the ambiance is family friendly. The flour tortillas are delicious too.

Yelp
Love patty's taco house!! Can't go wrong with bringing the family here. Carne guisada is the best!!

Luis R.

Yelp
We live all the way across town to the west and every month we go to Patty's Taco House to get our fix on Mole and the Chile Relleno on Fridays. Today was no different and they did not let us down. The way the to-go order is taken, the way the food is packaged, but best of all is the succulence of the food. Go to any other restaurant and you have to beg for more mole sauce, but not at Patty's, here they load up your plate, and oh, and it is finger-licking good too. Not in the least is the Chile Relleno which we will enjoy tomorrow, it is big and sits well across the plate and again, it never lets you down. It is super delicious and one of the best in-town. Patty, if you read this, please know that we will come back, so don't change anything.

Yelp
The Tuesday special is the fideo. Party's has the best fideo! The homemade tortillas were also good. The borracho beans are very good. I will definitely be back on a Tuesday!!!+
google avatar

Amelia G.

Yelp
This place is a family favorite. I always order a carne guisada with cheese taco. Their pork chop tacos are my husband's favorite.

Crystal P.

Yelp
It's a small place but the food is amazing and the service is GREAT! Get there early to avoid the crowd and the wait.

Leah H.

Yelp
As much as I hate to say this my favorite childhood restaurant over the months has become a disappointment. The prices are ridiculous and the food isn't the same ! Small portions the food is just spreads out neatly.. I loved patty's but these past couple months have been a let down...

Jane C.

Yelp
Patty's Taco House is definitely worth the wait for its great food and quick service. Enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate pumpkin drink with my late breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
" My Best Taco House, Always Missing The Best While Away! Yummy " I have to say that this is my spot people!! I am in the top 1 percent on TripAdvisor and I tell it like it is! Get off your Northside high horse and let Patty's show you how the Southside does it! God Bless this San Antonio family business and the way they throw down the Best Food around! I am sorry that the lines keep growing and the tables are always full! It's just the way it is. Better leave now if you want a seat! Love me some Patty's!

Garrett C.

Yelp
This is my favorite spot for breakfast tacos and lunch plates. The carne guisada and barbacoa are my two favorites however nothing here disappoints. We drive from the NW Side to eat here because it's that good! This is authentic Tex-Mex with perfect portions and great customer service.
google avatar

Copa D.

Yelp
Usually this place has good tacos but yesterday was really off. The tortillas tasted old and the beans were very off like they were going bad too. The food was inedible. Idk what the problem was but probably not going to that location again.
google avatar

Rickey B.

Yelp
Really good mom and pop Mexican place. Great tortillas and breakfast tacos. We love the home made tortillas especially the corn and I don't normally eat corn tortillas much. The Barbacoa was excellent as was enchiladas and everything we've tried here in the last 15-20 years. I don't think it was open for dinner but great breakfast and lunch spot for sure
google avatar

Roxanne O.

Yelp
Good Food. Poor Customer Service. There is always a wait on your standard breakfast and lunch hour. So if you are in a hurry don't go. I did the mistake of taking my coworkers there. Watched them get served and. My order came before we left and it was wrong. Asked to speak to the manager and no manager present. Diego the cashier said he was left in charge. Said hr wasn't going to charge me for my drink. Wow. Didn't have anything to eat not even a chip while all my coworkers rec'd and ate their lunch and he's not going to charge me for my drink? All without making eye contact with me and a smirk on his face. Never again. Thanks Diego for making my lunch hour so stressful and regretful and late to work. Your an example of why management is so important I want your supervisor to contact me. Til then, people don't waste your time with dine in.

Samantha P.

Yelp
Opened my to-go order and found a dead fly in my sisters taco. How yummy then tried to call and got no answer. They close at 3 and it was 2:50

Isabel P.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years! I love this place so much! But I just found a dead fly in my taco as i'm about to eat it. Disgusting will not be coming back here sorry patty's but y'all messed up.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
This restaurant does not adhere to COVID-19 restrictions. I do not advise coming here if you care for you, or your loved one's well-being. Also, food quality has diminished and it is way over priced.
google avatar

Gina P.

Yelp
This place has the best fideo! The broth was perfection, and it has carne guisada pieces in it. Sadly it is not available daily and was the Tuesday special. The homemade tortillas were also very good. The borracho beans, and flautas lacked flavor, but the refried beans had plenty of flavor. I will definitely be back and hope to try the enchiladas next, or maybe breakfast.
google avatar

Linda A.

Yelp
It had been about 6 months since I've had breakfast or lunch here. Usually theres a line and wait to be seated. I don't mind waiting but some of my family members don't care to. Well I convinced them to go on a Monday about 1030a. We had a wait time of about 10 minutes. The wait staff has definitely changed. Used to have very friendly workers but the one at our table and table next to us had non-smiling and just what's your order type of staff. Non-welcoming! The food was good but the tortillas are not the same as they were before. They were hard and chewy.

Daniel G.

Yelp
Pattys is known as a hidden gem of the southside of San Antonio. I have been going to this place for years until recently where my point of view has changed. I left in such a disappointment that had nothing to do with the quality of food but the quality of the prices of this place. I don't mind spending money on great food, but for 10 tacos three drinks I paid 70+ dollars and I also my table of 5 was charged a "large party" fee. I understand that we are in a recession, but price gouging is ridiculous. In places like this small business owners this is not the way to keep your business open by price gouging this basic of things that people enjoy about your establishment. I was charged $3 for a slice of bacon I could've gone to the store and bought a pack of bacon for three dollars. I was also charged two dollars for a to go cup on top of the drink my iced tea cost five dollars and I have the receipt to verify the total this is ridiculous Pattys. I am going to hope that you take care of this because Maria D charge me $71.29 , the atmosphere was overall great but I don't see myself going back to this establishment ever again because if I'm gonna pay $71 I'm gonna pay $71 for steak. As I stated earlier Pattys was a Hidden gem now it is a Hidden hole in the wall.

R T.

Yelp
Patty's has gone downhill. I ordered the pancake plate. This is the first time I had to cut my pancakes with a knife. They were tough and chewy. The scrambled eggs had no seasoning and potatoes tasted like they had been sitting out for a while. The only good thing on my plate was bacon...Also the tea was from the day before. This place used to be one of the best breakfast places on this side of town, now I would stay away...

Yelp
Went here on a Sunday morning after doing laundry. I worked up an appetite and had heard that this was "THEE spot" to go to for a great taco. First, this place is a little difficult to get to from I-37. Unless you know your way around the winding road, it may possibly take a try or two until you get to the restaurant. Second, it's definitely unsuspecting. Outside it just looks like a plain restaurant with a lot full of cars surrounding it. And from the outside, it doesn't look like it would hold a lot of people. Once you get in, it's a pretty big place. Plenty of space in the waiting area and seating doesn't take too long even during the peak hours. Third, I can't say I really cared for the food. I tried two different tacos and it just wasn't all that great. The chicharron taco was piping hot (more like burn-your-tongue-off hot) and it took awhile for the heat to die down enough so I could start eating it. When I did, the taco was soggy. My other taco was a potato and egg and it was bland. I usually don't add salt to my foods but I had to with this one. And even then it didn't do all that much. The prices were fine and the service was ok. I may come back to try something else, but in all honesty, I'd prefer to go to Rolando's.
google avatar

Teofila R.

Yelp
Had to wait approximately 15-20 minutes to be seated. Ordered coffee and the super chalupa a. One chicken, one beef. My friend ordered the number eleven which was pancake, eggs, bacon. Waitress offered tortillas and brought us two flour tortillas. My beef chalupa was mostly bean but it tasted good. The chicken was much better. The guacamole was good. It's a busy place and our waitress did check on us several times. I was not aware that more than one refill of coffee is 50 cents. I saw the sign on the way out. Table was a little crowded and I kept getting bumped by staff and customers. Overall, another good Tex-Mex place.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
When in Rome, this was the local restaurant that captured the authentic local TexMex flavor of San Antonio. Nothing like a little taco shop/restaurant that 'nails it'. I enjoyed a plate of carnitas, which were lean and tasty. The home made flour tortillas and salsa made this place a treat. When you look around and see how packed it is at lunch, by locals, you get the feeling that you found a great spot, and I did. The physical restaurant is warn, but that's part of the authentic charm, parking can also be a challenge, but the food and friendly service is worth it.
google avatar

Lori H.

Yelp
This is my dads favorite place. He loves their tortillas. We came here one day for lunch and it was packed as it always is. They have 7 parking spaces in front of the building and across the street is a gravel parking lot then behind the restaurant is another parking lot. So you can usually find a parking space. Upon leaving one afternoon my dad and i walked to the gravel parking lot and when we exited the lot our waitress was standing on the edge of the sidewalk looking at us, as we were about to drive out. Turns out I left my phone on the table and she ran outside to find me. I thought that was nice. The only thing i did not like was that they charge for chips and salsa. $1.75. To me that is just ridiculous, but i guess it saves the cleaners a huge mess and having to refill the bowls constantly.

Yelp
So who would have thought you would find this little gem of a place on Hackberry. In talking to the owner it's been open for 31 years, he wanted to name it after his wife Margarita but as you know that name was already taken so he name it after his oldest daughter. The wait wasn't long to be seated, and our food came soon after ordering. The chiliques were really good, I asked for the ranchero sauce on the side because I was worried it would drench my food and I wouldn't like it. The flavor was really good not watery or tomato-y. I didn't use it because they had a really good green salsa on the table that was just spicy enough with a really good flavor. The refried beans were also good, the potatoes just ok. Of course I ordered the guacamole on the side with fresh flour tortillas and hot coffee. The coffee was nice and strong. I will definitely be back.

S T.

Yelp
The prices are all double of what's on Yelp. The management there wasn't helpful. At all.
google avatar

Jeremy T.

Yelp
I came here when I arrived in town looking for a quick place to grab some breakfast tacos. Well this isn't exactly your typical to-go breakfast taco joint that I'm used to, but they do have a counter when you walk in for to-go orders. Thanks to yelp recommendations, I ordered the Super Taco and they gave me some green sauce to go with it. Luckily I started eating the taco before I left the parking lot. They had actually given me a chilaquiles taco. I went back inside and about 10 minutes later had the correct taco in my hands. The two most noticible aspects were the homemade flour tortillas and thick bacon that made this taco really delicious. The green sauce didn't really add to much to the overall flavor. If I'm ever in the area, I'll definitely be back to try other menu items. I was a little surprised they didn't have any Aguas fresca though.
google avatar

Eliz R.

Yelp
They had a wonderful food presentation but the food was bland. My crispy taco fell apart easily from how it became so soggy from the chicken. Rice tasted like it had too much water. I paid about $40 bucks for 3 plates. They charge for chips and salsa which is ridiculous! It's a Mexican restaurant I've never paid for chips and salsa at any Mexican restaurant.
