The Latest New Orleans Restaurant and Bar Closures of 2023 | Eater New Orleans

"I noted that Paulie Gee’s, the fabled Brooklyn pizzeria that had opened a downtown New Orleans location two years ago serving neo‑Neapolitan thin‑crust pies and Sicilian‑style pizza by the slice, closed that location while owner Paulie Giannone said he’s eager to reopen in a different, higher‑foot‑traffic spot in the city." - Clair Lorell

Google
So glad this place is in the neighborhood! The pizza is legit and it's a yummy and convenient lunch option in the Warehouse/Arts District. A perfect spot for a quick bite if you're touring the Julia Street galleries or staying/working in the area. I got two huge slices of cheese and two of pepperoni plus two bottles of water for $17.50, which is super reasonable. The pizza selection included two vegan options, which surprised me. They also have a huge variety of adult beverages, but also soft drinks in glass bottles. Highly recommend.

Google
The music was slightly too loud to have a conversation inside of the restaurant, the pizza was ok. Soda, warm. Good selection on drinks though. Mexican coke is always a welcome sight!

Google
As a Brooklyn transplant to the gulf, the last 2 years of my life have lacked the most important thing a Brooklyn Italian kid needs... Good pizza. Paulie is known very well back home and I make sure to make the 3 hour drive over from orange beach regularly to feed my needs.

Google
Now that I'm understanding the concept I'm going to be nice and give it 3 stars! The customer service was ok... the guys were sweet but the women on the front end was rude and barely spoke... which is nuts because you have to speak so we can order our food. They are going with the NYC concept so I've always heard they were pretty cold so maybe that's perfect customer service up there but you're in the south so I would love for them to act like it. Then didn't see the glam about the pizza, it was a regular slice with weird pepperoni and a basic drink selection. Few can drinks and they don't even tell you to get them out the refrigerator yourself. So we assumed it and just got our drinks. The set up is nice and basic too. So if you want a basic experience with blasting music that's painful to talk over but a great selection I might add. Then this is the perfect place!

Google
We found this place walking on our recent trip to NOLA. It is delicious and the staff is beyond amazing. The atmosphere is so nice and chill! Also the prices are super good especially when so much in NOLA is really expensive. Also my husband loved the free Mortal Kombat game

Jamie W.

Google
My brother and I went here to kill time and walked away stunned. There is some great pizza in the NOLA area. But Paulie Gee's is, by far, the best. You have to try the Freddie Pepperoni pie. Can not wait till they start delivering.

Google
Returned to New Orleans and staying in nearby area. Previously stayed nearby this neighborhood. Was driving around and located this place. Nice local pizza place. Has another location. Affordable, great taste, large slices, variety of pies, variety of sodas. Variety of music may be playing at time of visit. Opened on Sundays and other days. Street parking free on Sunday. Pay to park on street and nearby lot opposite side of street. Arts District. Nearby museums and local stores. Worth stopping by. Sunday afternoons appear to be easy to eat at location. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Google
Yum! Yum! Counter service was great with courteous staff. Bonus points for the old school coke machine. The experience of inserting the coins and opening the door was something else. Stop by, grab a yummy slice and tip these hardworking guys and gals

Yelp
I was staying nearby, so popped in for a quick slice since I was feeling hungry. I was intrigued by The Mootz, which has a garlic base with cheese. I decided to try a slice for $4.25 each, which they heated back up for me. The one slice is pretty huge and they put that single slice into an entire pizza box for me. I'm not usually into thin slice pizza, but this one was pretty good. Because the slice was so huge, it was also pretty filling as well. This is great for a quick meal when you're feeling some NY-style pizza.

Yelp
Absolutely love this pizzeria! It was so good I had to turn around and go back in for another slice of the Hellboy. It was something about the thin sliced pepperoni pizza with hot honey drizzled on it that took my breath away. I've gone at least 3x's and have enjoyed the pizza each time. The vegan pizza looks just as delicious as the regular pizza.
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
Great pizza by the slice! A variety of beverages to go with them and good service. I haven't had a lot of NOLA pizza, but this was definitely a good deal.
google avatar

Jeremy N.

Yelp
Came here for lunch. Had a slice of pizza and a coke. The pizza was delicious. Great flavor for the pizza overall. The sauce was great. The cheese and pepperoni was of great quality. The slice was nice sized. It was served very hot! The pizza did not cause heartburn or acid reflux so it's made of great quality. The staff was very friendly. Overall happy with the visit. I would for sure go back in the future.

Yelp
Paulie Gee's takes you back with the classic pizza parlour look and feel! Every detail from the type of napkins to the old movies playing on the wall. It's a cool vibe. The obvious attraction is the pizza. They have the signature NY style pizza--wide slices of thin pizza. The menu is fairly simple. They have cheese pizza and pepperoni pizza, but they also have this garlic "mootz" pizza. I've never heard of it, but I ordered one slice of that and the Freddie pizza. It was a square pizza with just sauce on top and sesame seeds on the bottom. I think the cheese was baked into the crust or something. Both pizza were amazing! I loved the mootz pizza because I love garlic. As for the Freddie pizza, who knew that I've been missing sesame seeds in my pizza crust this entire time! The trip thing about this place is that the pizza is way too high. I think the cheese pizza was about $4.25 a slice and the other was about $4.75. That's way too much for a slice of pizza in my book. I will probably come again, but I wouldn't be a regular customer.

Yelp
In a word, spectacular. As an NJ native, I wasn't expecting much from a New Orleans pizza shop when visiting with my wife. Couldn't have been more wrong. The place is cute, the service was friendly, but the slices spoke for themselves. Best slices I've had outside of the northeast. Place could fit right in on any street in NY/NJ. Old school coke machine was a very nice touch. Anytime I am back in New Orleans, we will be making a stop. The pepperoni Sicilian slice was my personal favorite, sauce was delicious and the crust was phenomenal. My wife enjoyed both of her slices, and the pepperoni/sausage joint was also great. Only wish we tried the hot honey, forgot to buy a pack or two when we checked out.

Yelp
No where near as good as the original in Greenpoint, Bkln. Not even close. Still, a nice reminder of what to me is home. Staff was completely apathetic about service or customer experience. No real acknowledgement at the counter upon arrival or ordering, no thank you on departure. Folks just hanging out on the curb having a good time. Just weird. But very Brooklyn in that kind of awful way that is stereotyped. So it could be what they are going for - I say that having lived in Williamsburg for 16 years. As for the pizza, I gotten Freddie Prinze square and half the thickness was cheese. So for me the balance was way off. And I ended up having to pick a lot of the cheese off, which I don't often do. Oh well. It's no doubt very good by NOLA standards but it could be incredible with some quality control.
google avatar

Courtney K.

Yelp
Popped in again the other night and it was pizza perfection! Slices were reheated but not overcooked or dried out. Staff is quick and efficient. And the beer and wine selection is very impressive- such a variety that I never noticed before!
google avatar

Tomas R.

Yelp
I have to say the pizza holds up very well for delivery the two times I've had it delivered via Doordash. Whether it's by the slice or the whole pi it's a great slice. Ordering it by the pie is delivered a lot neater including an old school pizza topper to protect the toppings from getting smushed. If you simply order a few slices to-go be prepared they might stick to each other since nothing is really separating the slices. Def try their pepperoni with the signature Mike's hot honey. Paulie Gee's uses the smaller pepperonis which I really enjoy. I'm really excited and looking forward to trying them in-person to get the whole feel!

Yelp
This is some definitely tasty pizza, probably some of the best in New Orleans. At 7 locations in the States now, this is a small time chain that is relatively new to New Orleans. The price point is about average or higher for higher-end pizza (23-33 USD/pizza; 3.50-4.75/ slice). The price per slice can be high, but they are rather worth getting if you are in that area. Definitely, the staff are noteworthy. They are so friendly, and I have been surprised by an extra slice when I got back to work before. Because I work in the CBD, I may find this pizza more worthwhile because of the accessibility. You might not because finding a parking spot in the city can be a straight pain. If you are standing by the shop right now teetering between going in or not, do it. It's worth your time. If you are chilling on your couch, looking for a quick quality slice, Reginelli's or Theo's might be your stop.
google avatar

Emily V.

Yelp
Very yummy! This is the real deal NY style pizza, unlike most other pizzas in town. The look inside the shop is also a classic NY style pizza joint design. There are maybe 8 booths along with maybe 8 seats at the window. A bunch of people there were also getting pizza to go when I was there. I ended up trying the Mootz and the Hellboy squared slices. They were both very good! I really love Mike's Hot Honey so enjoyed that on the top of the Hellboy slice. The sauce on the Hellboy is very sweet, I liked it a lot. The Mootz has no sauce, and is a thin slice. It was great too. I am looking forward to going back and trying a few other flavors!
google avatar

Lacey D.

Yelp
My husband and I had an enjoyable meal at Paulie Gee. We split a Hellboy 2 slice, a sausage slice, and a mozz slice. The hellboy was out favorite. I do with the others had a little more seasoning- the crust had no salt and the sauce tasted like plain tomato sauce. But we added some salt and Italian seasoning that was on the table which helped a lot!
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
Wow!! This stuff is good! And I've had my fair share of pizza in NOLA. WE LOVE GETTING SLICES. So that's what we did today. It was about $3.50-$5 per slice so it was a little pricey for cheese and pepperoni. We got cheese, pepperoni, mootz, and the hell boy square slice! Hell boy is topped with Mike's hot honey. It was very tasty and they heated up perfectly. There wasn't a wait when we got there. And we got can soda and bottled water. I would definitely be back and I hope they'll have some other speciality pizza
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
Wow! I love the way this place is trying to give off a late 70's early 80s pizza place vibe. Really gets you into the mode to eat some delicious pizza! Speaking of which, the slices were off the chain! The pepperoni slice was delightful but that Freddys pepperoni slice was every bit the reason you should go. It's like a huge Sicilian/Detroit style slice and it was amazing! I can't wait to order more slices and pizza from here. Please, please go give this place a try and make sure they become the local pizza joint it intends to be.
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Had PG's on back to back nights because it was so good. My group ordered from here for a party at Stumpy's and it was excellent. The pepperoni pies were just as you get in NYC. The added greatness was the Mike's Hot Honey which I have become a huge fan of. It was so good a friend came back for her birthday and ordered the huge Sicilian and I bought a bottle of hot honey to go with it. Superb. The pizzas are on the expensive side and not in a great location but if you are in the neighborhood its not a bad spot.
google avatar

Kelsey J.

Yelp
Paulie Gee's is open post Hurricane Ida! Large slices and a cool vintage feel in the restaurant. Workers were very nice and friendly and there was about 5-6 different selections of slices with fresh pies coming out frequently. Didn't get a whole pie, just slices, but it looked huge! Classic cheese and pep were on point! Oh, and get the Mike's Hot Honey packet on the side. It sounds like a weird combo, but it HIT
google avatar

Yelp
Being from the Northeast I grew up with a pizza place in every town. Pizza by the slice after the bars closed -pizza that can be folded in half and eaten on the go. While NOLA is a culinary Mecca I still love me a slice of pizza. Pizza by the slice is hard to find around here. A basic piece of cheese is the benchmark of if crust and sauce is good. This hit all the marks. Very generous slice -sauce is good not sweet and just the right amount of cheese. Folds perfectly ! Will be back
google avatar

Sean F.

Yelp
I did a 3-way taste test between Paulie Gee's, Pizza Delicious, & Nola Pizza Co., and Paulie Gee's came out on top. While none of the three really "wowed" me, Paulie Gee's had the most legit NY taste. The Freddie Prince Sicilian slice was really good.
google avatar

Teira R.

Yelp
I ordered the Mootz and, aside from entirely too much garlic, it was a great pizza. I'll try a different one next time I go. What I love about this place is that it is affordable for everyone working and living in the area, unlike the place that was here before. The slices are giant and filling. The shop is clean, the bottled water is $1 (unless you prefer sparkling). 5 stars is definitely for the amazing prices!
google avatar

Alejandro S.

Yelp
This is the spot! Classical, retro inside while also having a modern touch to the place. So many options of pizza and beverages. I got the sausage and the bellboy and was very much impressed with the quality, taste, and the cream soda I had to accompany my pizza slices. Definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
Was walking around the area and found this pizza place as soon as you walk-in they greet you. They had decoration up & it was clean inside. The pepperoni pizza was really good I enjoyed the thin crust. So if you're in the neighborhood and want a slice of pizza or a pie I would recommend you checking them out.
google avatar

Jeanne K.

Yelp
Delicious pizza! Greasy quality ingredients and the perfect combination of crispy with a touch of chewiness. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Lucas S.

Yelp
Definitely the best pizza in New Orleans. I usually get some fairly basic slices because it's New York pizza but today I tried a new one I have not seen before. They did a barbecue pizza rendition and it is incredible. Y'all gotta try this

Madison O.

Yelp
Run, don't walk to grab a slice of the *SICILIAN* pizza. The yeasty dough is hard to come by in New Orleans and simply cannot be compared. These thick crusted, puffy, square slices are oh-so good. The bottom of the pizza has a slight crunch and is perfectly seasoned with sesame seeds. The dough has an airy interior and is the ideal vesicle for their touch-of-sweet sauce. Take a bite and you will uncover a hidden layer of cheese. Thank you, Paulie Gee's for bringing this to New Orleans. The NY slices are nothing short of wonderful but the Sicilian slice always has my heart. Mike's Hot Honey makes a nice addition to any slice! Finally, check out their happy-hour from 2-5 PM: buy a slice and beer and get an extra slice, free! Pizza people, rejoice!
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Okay guys NY Mike here if you are ever in new Orleans Louisiana and you are looking for a real slice of pizza head over to paulie gees by far they best pizza in the city.
google avatar

Nathan R.

Yelp
Really good pizza, good tunes, beers and service, would definitely recommend .
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Boy did the city need this! Good pizza is hard to come by in the Big Easy, finding a good slice, well you'll have an easier time finding a unicorn. Enter Paulie Gee's. Having deep roots in New York, the business brings a true New York style pizza and focaccia to NOLA. Slices are big and fresh of both the pie and focaccia. It's obvious they do not skimp on the pepperonis or the cheese as all are properly covered. The sauce isn't a side note, rather it is deep and rich with the right flavors one should expect from good pizza. The crust is crispy and holds the toppings with no dreadful pizza "flop". You can hold it and fold it as a slice is supposed to be enjoyed. Now the prices are even better with an average of $4.50 per slice!! Two slices and you can leave as an honorary Italian!!!
google avatar

Nick L.

Yelp
I liked there pizza so much I decided they needed a Yelp account!! This was there grand opening and the staff was incredible the customer service was beyond expected for a new business that is busy. This is a family friendly establishment and I will be returning
google avatar

Jonathan V.

Yelp
This is 4th time here, and the food and customer service remain second to none. I messed up the order, and the staff was kind enough to make me a new pizza in addition to giving me the pizza I botched. Such a nice gesture.
google avatar

Bob N.

Yelp
This is the number 1 pizza shop in the city, end of story. Great classic vibes, awesome by the slice choices, worth the price. Ok come get some you've been told.
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
Yay!! Finally! A decent pizza-by-the-slice spot in NOLA! (Or pizza in general spot, tbh lol.) I stopped in on the Friday of the first week and it was LIT in there. So, pizza wise: loved it!!! I had both the traditional large pepperoni slice and also the thick crust square-shaped Hellboy, and both were great! The Hellboy had this sweet/spicy sauce; I'm more of a savory person when it comes to pizza so I'll probably move forward with the pep only, but the thick crust was crispy on the outside and soft n fluffy on the inside..if you're a pineapple pizza type person, go for it! Operations wise: they have a little bit of work to do. It was pretty packed in there but I still thought it took a bit long (maybe 30 min) for me to get two slices. The guys in there were working super hard, so I'm sure they'll figure out how to manage those high-influx crowds. They have a "call out the name" order pick-up system and it's not super efficient; it was loud in there and people could barely hear their names. Also, they only have bottled drinks and by the time I got there, they were out of bottled water. Again, this was about 5 days in, so I think they still deserved all 5 stars overall. Hoping they continue to be successful and tweak things operationally for efficiency (and, therefore, customer satisfaction) purposes. But it's great! So happy to have them in the city. (Just hoping they extend their hours far beyond 7pm! A girl be needing copious amounts of carbs after a night out in them NOLA streets.)
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Being a pizza connoisseur, when I heard a new northern style pizza join was opening up I made a b-line for it. The staff was great. Very open to explaining what was on each slice. We tried the pepperoni (my go-to) and the square pepperoni which has a sesame seed glazed bottom. Pretty tasty!! Totally different than the normal but worth trying. The regular pepperoni was still my fav but my only con is that the pizza was EXTRA thin. Like almost no dough thin. It was opening day so I understand things are just starting out. Sauce was good. Will return sometime.
google avatar

Sal S.

Yelp
Man, this pizza is amazing. And the place gives a healthy nostalgic nod to the early 80's with accent pieces from that era. But back to the pizza. I've been there a couple times for the classic slice of pepperoni - perfect crisp crust, and the pepperoni has a nice zing and cups up leaving that delicious, spicy meat nectar in the cup. Tables forego Parm in place of garlic powder. You can get a packet of spicy honey if that's your sort of thing. I tried it, it's ok, dozens of better applications than pizza IMHO. Anyway, so today was the first time trying the Freddie Pepp, which is their Freddie Prinze but with the addition of Pepperoni. RUN, don't walk and get yourself a slice of the Freddie Pepp. First, what is it? It's kind of like one of those Detroit styles, with a focaccia-esque dough. But what they do is put cheese down on the crust, so when it bakes, you get this crispy cheese underneath. Then the nice pillowy dough, then the most amazing pizza sauce you'll ever have, then GOBS OF CHEESE, then that zippy Pepperoni. If I'm gonna die, I hope it's with the taste of that slice on my tongue.
google avatar

Bill K.

Yelp
Great pizza by the slice or whole. The crust is perfect. Try the hot honey on it. The location has limited street parking. One small bike rack.
google avatar

Simi M.

Yelp
I'm just your basic Nola girl who loves pizza sold by the slice so I won't contribute to the century long debate of "true NY style pizza" -- though it certainly sounds like it is from the other reviews. For me, it's the convenience of being able to order a slice when you want a snack or a couple slices when you've had a bad day and just need the comfort of carbs. I've only had the pepperoni and the mooz? (the white cheese slice); my +1 had the regular cheese. It's all fantastic and they've got a decent selections of soda/beer/water to wash it all down with. I gotta comment on the quality control. One of the employees (manager, I suppose) chucked two slices of the square slices because maybe they'd been sitting out too long? Idk, I would've eaten them... but 'preciate these guys' commitment to serving us fresh slices! Love the $1 packets the Mike's Hot Honey is sold in. I haven't tried the drizzle on any of Paulie Gee's slices but I think it's probably best paired on a cheese slice -- the pepperoni doesn't need it in my opinion. I went back twice in one day so needless to say, I'll be back again!
google avatar

Ivy R.

Yelp
I was born and grew up in New York so I feel the way about a slice the way people from New Orleans feel about gumbo. There is a right way to do it and WE KNOW!!! It's a Birthright! LOL Anyway, the barometer for me is always a slice of cheese. So, we ordered a Slice of Cheese and a Slice of Pepperoni, Mootz (garlic white sauce slice) and the Hellboy (a slice of pepperoni with a Hot Honey drizzled over it. ) I liked the Hellboy but I thought the Hot Honey was not really hot at all. I was really hoping for some theatrics or at least a mild palpitation of tongue numbing madness! Sadly, that did not happen. However, I did like it and they sell the Hot Honey if you want to buy it. The Cheese Slice was perfect! Thin, crispy, foldable, floppy and the right ratio of tomato sauce to cheese. A Legit NY Slice in NOLA! Also, cool is the whole ambience. It is stylized like a NY pizzeria from the 70's /80's era. Orange hard laminate booths, black and white flooring, and the menu with letters you push in. I will definitely be going back. Got my eye on a square of a Sicilian , specifically Freddy Prize for next time!
google avatar

Liza A.

Yelp
Would recommend the pepperoni pizza. The slices of pepperoni have a nice char. Service is fast and friendly. It's a great lunchtime spot to check out if your in area.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
Very happy to get an NY slice without a 3 hour plane ride. Prices are fair and the pizza was good. My only complaint is that the music was so loud that I couldn't hear the counter worker to confirm my order or deal with payment--it was just obnoxiously loud. We had to go back and forth a few times. I will definitely be back--convenient location and easy to find parking! Clean bathrooms too.
google avatar

Shebba S.

Yelp
Where do I start?!?! The pizza was amazing and ole so delicious! It was cooked to perfection and had just the right amount of cheese to pepperoni ratio. The crust was soft and the pizza slices were huge. The cheese pizza was also very good and had the right amount of crust to toppings ratio. I couldn't just have one even though I was finished 3 slices ago. I think what set this pizza apart from others was the hot honey packets that accompanied the pizza which was so good. A great balance of sweet, salty, and spicy to bring a fun food to a different level of the fun. I would recommend this pizza shop and will be ordering again soon.
google avatar

Sunny H.

Yelp
Pizza by the slice or a whole pie. Simple and delicious. One size pizza feed my family of 5, no problem.
google avatar

Travis M.

Yelp
I love pizza. Ima simple pepperoni lover and this slice didn't disappoint. Nice vintage feel all over the place.
google avatar

Ray B.

Yelp
Probably the best pizza in the city that I've had. Get it by the slice or a whole pie

georgina c.

Yelp
Dear pizza gods, thank you for answering all my pizza prayers at Paulie Gee's!! yo this pizza is the best slice in town! I'm from Italy and know my pizza, really good taste, quality and the staff are awesome. I love the CBD store, they always have a lovely vibe to sit and enjoy! I'm obsessed with their thick slice "Prince Freddy" it's so good I have to order a whole pie! I can't recommend highly enough, to everyone to go and enjoy this delicious pizza! Buon apetito! Clean and colorful atmosphere. I love watching them make the pizza and the smell is incredible!
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
AWESOME thin crust pizza. The vodka sauce with sausage was DELICIOUS! Pizza by the Slice or whole pie!

Kathleen O.

Yelp
It was a Burning hot day when I stumbled into Paul Lee Gees for a slice and a great drink selection. I felt instantly refreshed but forgot my hat they were nice enough to contact me back and even offer to send it back. They had many different pizzas available. I hope to visit again someday.
google avatar

Victor T.

Yelp
The real deal. As an expatriate of the Northeast corridor of pizza paradise, New York, New Haven, Providence, Boston, this is right up there. NO is producing a real pizza paradise of its own with some really top notch parlors.
google avatar

Shelly R.

Yelp
Pizza was spot on. Hellboy, mootz, and just cheese. Boyfriend was disappointed they couldn't add mushrooms to his cheese. But still delicious!! Service was good, friendly folks.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Best pizza in Nola imho, Hellboy Slice is my jam, it's the sesame seeds. You should try it, or don't, I'm not your supervisor.
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
Great place to grab a slice or two around CBD/Warehouse District. Not much variety but what they do is solid NYC style pizza (original PG's is in Brooklyn). Thin hellboy is where it's at if you're getting one slice. Freddy prinze is different style (thick but light and crusty) but good stuff too. Nice variety of can and bottle beer.
