Climb Aboard Pacific Beach’s Luxe New Nautical Speakeasy, the Captain’s Quarters | Eater San Diego

"I found that Spencer’s SDCM group has turned Good Time Poke into an otherworldly travel-agency–style vestibule that doubles as the shared kitchen for both bars; from there you can enter left into the Grass Skirt or veer right through a secret door where fantastical octopus figures pull you into the Captain’s Quarters." - Candice Woo

Review long time coming. Objectively, probably the best seasoned Poke in San Diego. Also, fish is consistently fresh. This is Hawaiian style Poke, not your run of the mill generic chain. Family ran business, and some of the nicest customer service to boot. Tito is always a gentleman. Let them know it’s your first time and he’ll take care of you. Highly, highly recommended. -Oli and Ai

Google
Poke is amazing in particular the spicy aji, the atmosphere not so much because there really is no place to eat inside or outside. But it is right next to the beach so you can always sit there and eat. Its still worth it to go if you love good poke!

Google
Came for dinner the other night and this is some of the best poke I’ve had. Customer service was excellent and staff were very friendly. I will definitely be back to support this business :)

Google
So fresh and delicious. We don’t have poke like this back home so I came two days in a row. Wish I found this gem earlier. Super friendly staff. I’ll be back.

Google
In from out of town & found this place while searching for the best poke in PB! So glad we stopped in! The food was phenomenal & the service was great too!! Will be back again!! Highly recommend!!

Google
Thank goodness for my friend taking a picture because I devoured mine! The price seems fair for the amount of money and taste! I really enjoy how fast they are and the lemonades are solid and they have fresh fruit in them! 10/10

Google
Best poke I've had outside of Hawaii and wonderful owners and staff. Yummm

Google
They’re incredible. Gave us free drinks for the short 10 minute wait we had. Food was amazing. Great vibes.

Yelp
Pokefanatic here, and this place is top two in San Diego (tie). The staff/owner are super friendly and their product speaks for itself. Super high quality fish with great flavors/combos. The dynamite and 51/50 were my favorite as bowls or plates. I think it's so unique to be able to have the traditional poke flavors and add toppings like crab, seaweed salad, etc as toppings more like build your own bowl. They also have killer Mac salad if that's your thing. There is short term parking in the lot as well! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I ordered online for pickup around 12pm on a Saturday and ordered 3 poke bowls. 2 Maui and 1 Fuego. However there was a mixup with my Fuego bowl and it ended up being a Maui instead. I had also asked for cucumber on mine but there wasn't any. Service was great and staff was friendly. The salmon was really good, again I am not a Tuna fan so it just wasn't for me. There was also a clump of tuna stuck together (I think from being defrosted) so it was kind of mid. Parking was surprisingly okay for an afternoon weekend in PB. Other than that the bowls were good and no other complaints from my friends!

Yelp
I've been around the SD poké scene trying to find the best spots in town. PB Poke House earns its spot as one of the best places for authentic Hawiian poké that I've ever tried. Their fish outclasses the freshness of Hawaiian Fresh, and still hits the spot for the typical "American" bowl (whilst maintaining a classic Hawaiian taste). As someone who works in customer service, this place is very inviting and friendly. Tito was fantastic with my group and is extremely passionate about the shop. He walked us through the menu and made sure everyone got exactly what they wanted. Extremely helpful and generous guy!! Overall, I'm now a new regular at PB Poke House, which is about the highest praise I could give. Whether you're looking to get your standard bowl or a plate/platter, PB Poke House knows what's up!!

Yelp
This place always has extremely fresh poke and delicious toppings! Service is quick and friendly, and the location is right by the beach so you can grab and go for a nice beach front meal

Yelp
Disappointing and honestly, really horrible poke place. The tuna and salmon tasted fishy and it was put disgracingly over piping hot rice and made the fish warm. There was no flavor on the fish even though we got some with the marinades, the toppings were sparse and did not work well together. The rice was also unseasoned and the worker did not seem to want to take my order and thus the bowl turned out really sad. I would not come back.

Yelp
I just started eating poke and I had the ahi tuna bowl here three times and it was delicious. However, I had it yesterday and I have been sick and puking since midnight. It's definitely food poisoning.
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
This was hands down the best poke bowl I have ever had! I started eating prior to taking a photo, so my apologies! There was so much fresh fish! It was massive! 10 out of 10

Yelp
Tasty poke by the PB, in a busy area. Shop is quite small but they have a good amount of seating both in and out. Go there earlier in the day as we went once at noon and another time before closing and the amount/quality of fish is different also the Saturday staff was friendlier! They have a lot of bowl options for people who are indecisive and dont know which options go with which. I love the 51/50 - spicy but flavorful. Dynamite is fine, not as good as 51/50. Their rice is cooked perfectly, I like that they have the greens option for the base too!v vì

Yelp
Awesome service and very friendly owner! Tried their poke twice and can say it's one of the better places in SD - offer free toppings, good fish to rice ratio, and not super expensive for the amount you're getting.

Yelp
I got the Fuego Salmon and Spicy Garlic Ahi. I remembered the spicy garlic sauce was very good from the last time I visited, so I definitely got that again. And it did not disappoint! Very flavorful with a nice subtle garlic and spiciness. The fuego sauce was basically a spicy mayo sauce without the spicy (lol). The house sauce was still not a favorite. It lacked taste in my opinion. The best thing was that both fishes were very fresh! Definitely will be back for more poke in the future especially on non-rush days/hours as parking was still kind of rough.

Yelp
We love this poke spot! Conveniently located one street from the beach, this restaurant is great for a quick bowl. We were in and out in less than 5 minutes. We'll certainly be back!

Taylor S.

Yelp
Best poke place in SD! The poke is always fresh and the 51/50 bowl is my go to. Amazing service and staff is just lovely! It is right near the beach but also convenient to get in and out if you are trying to grab and go.

Yelp
1. Service was a 1000/10. The staff were so helpful in our decision on what to order. I love poke and didn't think I needed any help, but they went into detail on each type of poke they offered. 2. The poke was good! There aren't many poke spots in PB but this is a good option if you have the craving They have some seating, but best to take it to-go and enjoy the beach

Yelp
My bf and I were visiting from OC & we knew we had to get poke in SD. Decided to try this place since they had authentic poke. Hands down one of the best poke I've ever had, not even exaggerating. It was satisfying my craving for sure. The staff were super friendly and cool. I love the welcoming atmosphere. We will return if ever in SD!!

Yelp
New spot in oceanside! with this being in such a high traffic area of downtown, i wish it was busier! Have stopped by there twice now and love it. A great healthy stop! So far have had the fuego and the shrimp ponzu! The bowls come in 2 sizes with rice veggies usually a protein, and many other unlimited toppings. The ability to change the bowl is super helpful based on your wants needs allergies and any other reason. The prices are bit higher than i expected but i do enjoy it for the quality you receive. My only consistent complaint over the 2 trips is that the shrimp seems to run out quickly and they don't have a backup. Although they open at 11 i have gone both times around 12 and they have always run out of only have bowls worth then. unsure if they make more throughout the day but considering they just open it's shocking to run out quickly. I would love to come more and try other things as well. The staff is very kind and understanding of explaining the areas you can change. Parking is a bit difficult as it's a downtown area of course, but it takes a couple minutes is all I will 1000% be back to try more options here!!

Yelp
Rarely it happens that yelp leads me astray, and this was the case here. The food tasted fairly good, but to me, the quality was not there. It was kind of a strange set up for a poke place. Instead of making the food in front of you, they make it in the back. They have pre-determined bowls to choose from. Very few toppings. The wontons looked like they came out of the plastic bag that they sell in the salad department at the grocery store. They charge extra for edamame which is a standard poke topping. The marinade on the fish tasted OK, but I got the feeling that it was purchased pre-marinated from somewhere, not done in house. It was also freezing cold in there. The first table we sat at was broken and almost fell over when I put my drink on it. The table behind me had one of the employees stuff all over it. There was also playing some type of very aggressive music full of swear words and sexual innuendo, which was weird to me because it seemed like it was supposed to be kind of a family place. Probably would not return.

Yelp
First time trying this place and it was good! Ordering was very confusing for me for some reason, I am used to building my bowl as I go so ordering threw me off. Overall, the poke bowl was good, nothing crazy special about it. I did get a Mac salad side as well, and it was not my favorite - it had way too much mayo for my preference. BUT I did take it home and add more pasta to the Mac salad and was able to eat it for the next couple days :) I would give this place another shot and try some other menu items!

Yelp
Amazing service and one of the best quality poke places in SD!! Staff is so incredibly kind and attentive

Yelp
I spent my whole summers in Maui growing up and Foodland poke was pretty much the only thing I ate besides loco moco. I had been searching SoCal for the closest poke I could to Foodland's (besides homemade). Came down to San Diego for a weekend and popped into PB Poke House hoping for the best possible outcome, and I GOT IT. The fish was fresh and pre-marinated which is, apparently, hard to find in SoCal. I was so delighted and it felt like being back in Maui. Love the fact that I can buy a half pound or a full pound too! The staff was also super friendly and we got to talking about Maui and the poke and it was super awesome. Any time I'm back in San Diego, I'll be stopping in here for my little bowl of heaven! Have to try all their poke and will be picking up a pound or 2 for on the road, too.

Yelp
Great, fast service! It seems every poke place is now $20 and up and while that's true for pb poke house, they actually make it worth it with large portions and a lot of free toppings. I love that they have marinated poke and the 51/50 bowl did not disappoint. I got extra sauce on the side and in glad I did because the bowl itself isn't drizzled with sauce and that's one of my favorite parts. While you can sit inside to eat, I wouldn't recommend it. It's clean but cold (understandably) , and the seating area is small.
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
I liked this place! It's not your typical poke place where you order down the line. They have set bowls to choose from but can be customized. The staff was so nice and friendly! It was my favorite part honestly. He made sure to walk me through the menu and make a recommendation. It's a small place close to the beach. The fish tasted fresh. I wish I got more sauce on mine. A regular bowl is $20.
google avatar

Shannon Z.

Yelp
Solid poke place! I ordered the spicy garlic tuna and a sweet garlic flavor (I think it was called aloha salmon). I really enjoyed the salmon! The tuna was just a tiny bit fishy and the texture wasn't as great as the salmon but the sauces were delicious! I really enjoyed the wonton topping and wish more was added. Overall it was pretty pricy for the portion. There's a parking lot although paid public parking. Staff was great and gave good recommendations.

Yelp
Grabbed a regular bowl which comes with 2 scoops of fish + whatever toppings you choose and extras. I ordered 1/2 classic shoyu and 1/2 spicy ahi with all toppings available and added avocado ($1). In total this was $19 w/o tip. A tad on the expensive side. I was also wanting to try their mango lemonade however they were nearly sold out so the gentlemen helping me, who i assume may be the manager, offered me the rest for free. Very kind and appreciated gesture which speaks a lot about the integrity of this business. My bowl was the perfect size and plenty of fish to fill someone up. My favorite was the serrano peppers with the fish. Perfect crunch and freshness to complement the fish. The place itself is pretty small and tucked into the corner of the plaza. Seating is limited so Id grab a bowl and take it elsewhere to consume. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
It is always such a treat coming here! Amazing staff, amazing service and delicious poke. It is always so nice to be remembered going in, the staff always makes you feel like family! Brought my friend there for the first time and she absolutely loved it! Thank you again PB Poke House Mahalo

Yelp
Legit hawaiian style poke. Went here during our week-long vacation in SD. Was so good we went twice. Got a couple large bowls of 50/51 and the classic shoyu. I'm super into the fresh chilies on my food lately, mostly because the heat of a lot of foods nowadays are lacking, but also because I like the freshness of them. The shoyu is so classic, and the marination before is a MUST in my book. All of these other poke places just aren't doing it right. The spicy ahi was spicy and creamy like it should be. We also got a couple of spam musubis for my daughter, who somehow made a giant mess out of a handheld food. They were super cool about kids being in there, which is really important to us nowadays. Bravo to this place. They did not disappoint.
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp and was not disappointed. Delicious, fresh poke and even friendlier staff and service. We ended up getting the 51/50 plate as recommended by the staff and spam masubi. Everything was freshly made and the masubis were fresh and warm. Will be coming back here!
google avatar

Selena F.

Yelp
Great lunch spot. Fish was so fresh and it was the perfect lunch to eat on the beach (just a short walk). I got the aloha bowl twice and it was delicious!

Yelp
Saw this pop up on my Yelp after looking up poke shops in the area and decided to give it a try! I have my usual poke spots but decided to venture out and see how this shop compared. - PARKING - Pretty small lot, and it can get filled very quickly during peak hours. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Tucked in the left hand corner of a small plaza, you might miss it if it's your first time visiting. The store itself isn't very large, with only a few tables inside that seat at most 10 people. Many customers take their food to-go, possibly this is why. The staff is very welcoming, and after realizing it was my first time in, the lady offered some suggestions and introduced their menu. It was nice to get a quick rundown, but after ordering I saw an option that would've better suited me that she didn't mention. It was a plate vs the bowl I got, but in the end I suppose it was my fault I didn't look through everything myself. - FOOD - Fish is very fresh and good quality. The sauces were quite delicious too, but slightly on the saltier side for me. I got to try Fuego and Maori Kid, and preferred Maori Kid a little bit more. Portion sizes are on the smaller side for the price in my opinion, and again wish I had gotten the plate option. - OVERALL - Glad to support a local business, but will probably continue on looking for other poke shops.

Yelp
An absolutely phenomenal spot for poke. I got the dynamite signature poke bowl and it was for sure a 10/10. The fish was fresh and delicious and the ratio of rice to fish to veggies and additional toppings was just right. I also got spam musubi which was just absolute perfection. The spicy house sauce on the musubi gave it a nice bit of heat. Love love love this spot and will definitely drop by again if I'm back in San Diego. The staff was also super pleasant. Highly recommend trying out PB Poke House

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place. From the moment I walked in the staff made me feel at home with a true Aloha welcome. When I asked if the Poke bowl included a scoop of Mac salad I was told no... but here is a container on the house! Amazing! They took a Polaroid of us to hang on the wall! We felt like celebrities!!! Unfortunately the Poke was not worthy of the level of service this place provides. My Ahi was mostly made up of sinewy chunks with that stringy of putting texture and very little of the more desirable loin. I ordered a Shoyu bowl. The marinade was very sweet. It was overpowering and candy like as if it were a desert or dish made for a child to entice them to eat something they would not normally ingest. The fish was literally swimming in this thick viscous sauce... it could not be avoided or pushed aside. Then there was the rice. What we received was either scraped from the very bottom of the rice cooker or was leftover from yesterday. Both my wife and my portion had either uncooked or dried hard bits of rice grain. This would normally been off putting, however considering how bad the rest of the meal was... it was kind of comical. We also ordered two of their signature lemonades.. a pineapple and a mango, both with generous chunks of fruit floating inside. Much like the shoyu it was terribly sweet. Like syrupy sweet. I am unsure how so much sugar could be suspended in a liquid! I almost wish they weren't so nice! I want to be angry over such terrible quality food and awful beverages... but I would almost go back here just to be around the staff! Come for the service and eat elsewhere. I give the food 1 star. But the place gets 3 just for the staff's amazingness. But don't be fooled by the 3 stars... you should not eat here.
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
The poke here is always great! My go to spot for a poke bowl. The service is always kind and quick! It's cute on the inside, but even better because it's so close to the beach. Thanks, PB Poke!
google avatar

Keilani L.

Yelp
I would come back for the poke, but not the poke bowl. Here's What I Got: Nami Bowl ‣ [7/10] ‣ 1/2 Classic Shoyu & 1/2 Cali ‣ Poke was seasoned very well ‣ Good amount of fish & tasted fresh ‣ The rice tasted old as I literally bit off a part of it ‣ I know seaweed is green, but it turned my rice NEON GREEN, which was quite unappetizing Service was great !! Private parking lot (paid) -- First 30 min is free

Yelp
My fav poke spot. Everything is so fresh, staff is friendly and in a great location. I love the 51/50 but can't go wrong with anything!

Yelp
Fresh poke. Perfectly cubed. No scent of fish. Well dressed. I would definitely come back for the spicy salmon. Service was quick

Yelp
The quality of the people running this place, working behind the counter and making the food is enough on its own for me to rate this place 5 stars. I'm blown away by the feeling of connection I get every time. The food is always so good and such a good healthy option after a long day at the beach. The place is always clean and has super fun pictures of customers on the wall.

Yelp
Came here to grab a bite and was not disappointed. I had the 51/50 bowl. All the ingredients were super fresh and the flavor was spot on & the portion was perfect. I also tried 2 of their lemonades - the Pineapple Lemonade & the Strawberry Mint. Don't sleep on this place. Can't wait to try more.

Yelp
5 stars for Johnny who was a gracious host. While on my quest to find legit Hawaiian style poke, so far this one is the closest when it comes to the freshness and 'chew' of the poke. I had the Dynamyte which allowed me to try 1/2 spicy salmon and 1/2 spicy tuna flavors. Great if you like spice but they have plenty of non spicy available. I also really liked the treatment of their imitation crab. Texture was higher quality it seemed. But minus .01 stars for a few things: - Music wasn't my style, lots of F bombs in the lyrics. I couldn't wait to leave. Definitely PB style, not family friendly in that way. - The presentation is a little messy ( but still tasty) and they don't cut the fish thoroughly... maybe they need to sharpen their knives? See photo. - Appeared slightly overseasoned, but taste was good. I well try something not spicy next time. So, this is definitely a grab and go place. Not a come and stay awhile and definitely not a heat place to bring all your family and friends... So far, the closest to the quality of real Hawaiian poke. I will return when I need that grab and go Hawaiian poke.

Yelp
Stop by yesterday, Tito one of the owners help me out with my bowl! Place was super clean and staff was helpful with making my bowl the best it could be. Would highly recommend this for any poke lovers out there !

Yelp
I have about 5 other poke reviews , so I would consider myself a poke connoisseur. Right off the bat , parking is HORRIBLE ! But what can you expect with PB parking , but keep in mind I went on a Saturday @1/2 so it was pretty crowded . Besides the interior is cute and cozy n clean + amazing islander music. As for the service , it was a 10/10 . I came in taking awhile to look at the menu and picking what I would like best and the guy at the reg told me " he got me " to my surprise he made me a whole plate with 3 poke he says are his fav + a drink n ube cookie . I'm not entirely sure what he gave me tho unfortunately. On to the actual food, I LOVED THE MAC SALAD !! I would probably say the best Mac salad out of all poke places in sd . Now for their poke , it wasn't a hit unfortunately... I rlly wanted to like it but the texture and flavors wasn't just for me. The poke ect Id say 3/5 but the service rlly bumped it up.

Yelp
Stopped by this poke shop for some quick bites and was pleasantly surprised but how good the bowls were! Also the owner was real nice and even hooked us up! We got the 51/50 with Tuna and really enjoyed the flavor of both! Also the side mac salad had just the right amount of flavor and texture. Bookmarked for whenever we come down again from LA

Yelp
I'm glad I stopped by PB Poke House, it's perfectly located for a Beach lunch, it's super clean, and the service is amazing. Tony was great, answered all my questions and made my experience very personal. As someone who eats Poke often, the traditional Poke Plate had spot on flavor and was a great bang for my buck. Whenever I'm in the PB area I will be back!

Adam B.

Yelp
I would give this place 10 stars if I could. The staff is amazing, and the poke quality is elite. Must try it out if you haven't already!
google avatar

Grace P.

Yelp
Wish I had a better experience here as they seem to have so much potential! Unfortunately they gave (& charged extra) for avocado when I specified I didn't want it, white rice instead of brown, and were missing cucumbers that I requested. Wasn't left super full since I don't eat white rice & that was a hefty part of the bowl. The fish tasted good but for $20 I'm disappointed that 3 things went wrong with my order :/ (and I was there while they made it, so if any ingredients were out they could have told me) I visited for dinner on 7/25/25.
google avatar

Gabriel D.

Yelp
What an absolute gem. This is the freshest poke I've ever had. The service is top notch and the flavors in the 51/50 bowl are incredible. There's definitely something to having the ahi marinated ahead of time. Strawberry mint lemonade was also the best I've had and they were nice enough to make me a refreshing cucumber water. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
Maui Poke Plate - Salmon and Ahi included with Mac salad and rice this was so flavorful and still allowed us to taste that fresh fish flavor. Also ordered a mango lemonade that was perfectly refreshing! We each got a spam Masubi too and they were fresh, salty, and delicious. The service was outstanding! The two guys working were incredibly friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere, music, and spots to sit inside. Loved supporting this business and will definitely be back.

Scott G.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, quick service. Being from Montana, I didn't realize a "Poke Bowl" was made up of raw fish. That said, once over the shock and stirring up the courage to try it, I really enjoyed the salmon. It was delicious!
google avatar

Brenda L.

Yelp
A solid poke spot right by Mission Beach! I tried their "fuego" poke bowl, which comes with salmon, spicy house sauce, furikake, white and green onions, seaweed salad, and crab salad. The spice level on this was actually a whole lot spicier than I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it! The salmon tasted nice and fresh, and I liked the selection of toppings that were available. Service was friendly - we had a larger group when visiting and they were quick to make our orders as we were ordering, so we didn't have to wait very long. Inside, the space is a bit small with only a few tables. We found it better to do a grab and go and eat elsewhere - fortunately they're by the beach! =)

Yelp
The staff here was super friendly and offered some great suggestions. The food and drinks were priced right and tasted great!

Yelp
Most importantly the fish was fresh! Super friendly guy at the register too! We enjoyed our bowls and can't wait to come back. :)
