Peaches is obviously a "legendary" shop to some, and while I understand the sentimental connection many locals have with what it once was, I feel like it's now mostly famous for its absurd prices. And, when I say absurd this isn't hyperbole. We're talking used, regularly found records, priced $20+ above their average. And used cds, yes...used cds, which cost $5 on Ebay, priced at $20.
Is this a record store or a museum for repackaged music? Maybe they've made so much money in the past, and they don't feel the need to price records competitively, or even appropriately. My friends and I joke about how they don't actually want to sell records any more, and maybe use it as a front for something else.
You should go just for the amusement. Be prepared to laugh as you walk the aisles, almost like you're on a hidden camera show, or an SNL sketch. The business model simply doesn't make any sense at all, unless of course you're the guy who says, "Actually I'd like to pay $60 for a $20 record. I like wasting money." After years of record shopping, internationally, roaming truly great stores like Amoeba (CA) and many others, this place is, by far the most expensive vinyl shop I've found.
I'll end with a positive, sort of. Their collection is solid. They'll likely have what you're looking for, or close, but the prices will depress you. The level of OUT OF TOUCH is at an 11. New Orleans deserves better.
