Sometime during the 1930's my great grandmother went Christmas shopping downtown Akron in a blizzard. Word on the street is that she passed out right outside the Peanut Shoppe door. Being pregnant with twins they rushed her to the hospital (in a blizzard) and she ended up passing away from "pneumonia". Little morbid family fun fact for ya, but I can't help imagine every time I stop by the Peanut Shoppe.
The inside never changes and that's why I love it. Local police officers, downtown employees, residents, students, and regulars keep the business going. The inside is small, but the walls are draped with a good old fashioned Akron history lesson. The newspaper clippings are yellow and staring to curl, but you showed up for peanuts not home furnishing remember?
You walk in knowing what you're going to buy and end up with 5 pounds of chocolate covered pretzels, trail mix, holiday candies, and that little chocolate goodness your grandpa loved. The Peanut Shoppe's selection is homemade, local, and endless. The best part about the place is it's an Akron staple and for me...well...RIP Great Grandma.
