The 38 Essential Cleveland Restaurants

"In 2022, chef Karen Small shuttered Flying Fig, her pioneering farm-to-table bistro, after 23 years. In its place she created a more casual, flexible European-style wine bar and market. Dine-in customers can order wines by the 2-ounce taste or full glass from the temperature-controlled Cruvinet, or browse the market shelves, where a wonderful selection of natural wines from small producers are sold at retail price (plus corkage fee). Start with a dish of Castelvetrano olives or a charcuterie board starring just-sliced American country hams. Chicken liver mousse is presented in a glass jar and gets smeared across warm, cheesy gougeres. Larger plates include a juicy lamb burger, mussels frites, and flatbreads topped with ham and seasonal produce." - Douglas Trattner

Google
Owned and staffed by people with an eye on quality local/regional ingredients who have years of knowledge about food and wine, it’s a place not to be missed. Everything is delicious, presented with care, and thoughtfully procured from quality farms and businesses! Terrific wine selection and shop too!

We just stopped in to check the place out, and it bears further research! Bought some bitters here for cocktails and can't wait to try them. We'll be back!

The chef and owner came to the table to discuss some lunch options with us. Very good food and a wonderful experience.

The sandwich offerings at Pearl Street are giving me everything I've been on the hunt for around here - delicious, high quality ingredients, veggie options, and at a fair price. I tried the pesto eggplant sandwich and it was glorious! The wine options are also top notch. Beautifully curated with unique selections. Can't wait to return!

We had an 11 person birthday dinner at Pearl street the other night and everything was perfect! The cocktails were flavorful, the wine selection is one of the best in the city, and the food was delivered quickly and delicious to boot. Considering the size of our party, Julia and her team executed the event effortlessly. Also, the basque cheesecake we had for desert was awesome. Definitely recommend Pearl Street to all.

The food and drinks were fabulous, and the servers made fantastic recommendations. The food presentation was lovely. The flatbread was especially delicious! We will definitely be back on our next trip to Cleveland.

Google
The food is fabulous. Karen Small has done it again. I adore the lamb burger and the fries. While the menu is limited don't be fooled. Every item is very carefully prepared and first class.

Google
Well, she does it again. Karen Small opens a wine bar and on day one, it's already outstanding. It's really a restaurant with an excellent wine selection because the menu goes way beyond any wine bar in the area. As to be expected, service and execution are just perfect. I hate two things, the fact that she had to close the Fig to make this happen and that I have no idea how to make meatballs so tender and flavorful. Hats off, well done, go there no matter the occasion....

Yelp
Karen Small and Jill Davis hardly need any introduction - but their revival of former Flying Fig is shiny, cozy, and charming. The patio might not be used for a few months yet, but the empty space out front does draw attention to the warmly lit bar within. Step inside the Market side and you'll be greeted by some of the coolest and friendliest humans in Ohio City (which is already filled with cool and friendly humans). Various fresh, pickled, and otherwise preserved goods are available for purchase at the front, where you'll also see the charcuterie boards being carefully prepared. And of course, you have your pick from a comprehensive selection of wine. I highly recommend stopping for a sit-down meal. Especially now with Christmas decor in full swing. The dining room is intimate with mostly small tables, but admiring the cruvinet (a fancy wine chilling and dispensing system) behind the bar is best done from the bar. Happy Hour is the best time for sampling different wines with $1 off cruvinet pours and $5 for a house glass. In standard Karen & Jill fashion, food is carefully thought out with a focus on local produce and cured meats. You could snack your way through an evening here and not feel too heavy (or guilty) since the ingredients are so fresh (except preserved ones obviously) and you're supporting regional businesses. Your bartender/wine master will likely have several suggestions to suit any wine-seeker. Excited to see the continued evolution of Pearl Street!

Yelp
I can't believe there are so few reviews here. As a fellow wine industry employee, I was thoroughly impressed with their minimum intervention, biodynamic selection of wine from around the world. The service was impeccable. Day time audience was families! Thankful and recommended.

Yelp
I love the walkable Pearl street area with small businesses like this restaurant mixed with a few large businesses. Inside the restaurant has a standing wine bar area with some market items and tables for grabbing some snacks or a meal. I enjoyed some delicious fries, hummus and lamb burger. The food was delicious and I enjoyed my Syrah. The next time I will read the pricing better though on the wine list. I did not realize that the wine prices were listed as tasting and glass. I thought it was glass and bottle.

Yelp
The vibe at Pearl Street is warm and welcoming. A lovely well- crafted food and drink menu features incredibly fresh and seasonal dishes with obvious attention to wine and cocktail pairing. We tried mussel frites-impossibly delicate mussels topped with crispy frites- so good. We also had a beautiful cheese and meat board that also featured crispy apple , homemade pickles and yummy nuts and marinated peppers. The lamb sausage flatbread with mint and tahini was amazing. We started with a negroni that was vibrant and lush and shared a bottle of pint noir that was velvety and a perfect pairing with our food. The staff was kind, attentive, and they really know their stuff. Pearl is a great spot for date night or a meet up with friends. I can't wait to go back and I will get dessert next time.

Yelp
A pleasant surprise! Food was delicious! Chef really knows food pairing and presentation. Wine was also very good! Will go back

Yelp
Delicious food, interesting wines, and fabulous service! My husband and I shared the burrata, toast, and winter salad- all incredible! We also each had a tasting, consisting of 3, 2 oz pours of wines we selected from the menu. We enjoyed each of our tastings! And to finish our lunch, we shared a piece of olive oil cake- the stuff of dreams! We look forward to returning for another wonderful meal!
