I attended a wedding here several months ago and had a great time. However, the management were extremely inhospitable, and seemed to resent the fact that there was a wedding on, though they seemed to be perfectly happy to take the cash.
A few examples:
1. They kept the bar open to members during the wedding (the wedding was in the hall) - no option to hire the entire venue, but the only operating bar was the members bar (bride and groom were able to have wine in the hall, which they had to bring in themselves for £10 a bottle corkage fee).
2. The bar staff would rudely admonish any wedding guests who lingered too long in the bar after getting their drinks or coming back from the toilets. This was after informing the bride and groom that it would be fine for wedding guests to get drinks other than wine from this bar, since the hall bar couldn’t be opened (there was a tab for the wedding guests).
3. It became apparent why the bar was opened to members when the groom also discovered at the end of the night that the management had been running all the members’ drinks through on the wedding tab. One of the members felt bad and gave the groom a tenner at the end of the night. He had more decency than the management, who didn’t even bother to apologize.
I don’t get why the management were so put out by this event. They were making a lot of money on what would have been a very quiet night. Everyone at the wedding was well-behaved and polite. Maybe they’re just resentful about Peckham becoming “hipster” or “gentrified”, which is a stupid attitude. Even so, many of the guests and the couple are locals and had become members prior to the wedding. If they’re so resentful about outsiders, perhaps they shouldn’t have the venue available for hire. As it is, the couple won’t renew their membership, and the rest of us who are locals who had previously considered applying for membership are giving this place a wide berth.
I’ve given this two stars because of how cheap the hire fee is, but I’d warn anyone thinking of hiring it to be aware of all the hidden extras that will come served with a healthy dollop of f-you.
