Amazingly fresh breads. Baked daily 🍞🥖 They also serve breakfast and lunch sandwiches. My pick is definitely any of the sandwiches with fresh mozzarella 😋 Located in the Village section of downtown on Newark Ave. They do get quite busy during lunch time so plan accordingly 👍 An important note: Cash Only 💵 🏧 inside.

Francisco Gonzalez

Google
Where you can experience the good old days. In bread making for your palate, enjoyable handsdown to the baker for keeping the traditional alive in this modern world

Google
1) CASH ONLY! 2) totally worth every cash penny. Great prices and great food. Try the BLT, it changed my life, put my kids through college, and invested into my 401(k). Joking aside this place is amazing.

Google
I'm not a big fan of sandwiches. HOWEVER. The mozzarella and capocollo was incredible! A foot-long sandwich, coffee for less than $10. Pictured is only half of the sandwich, of course.

J. B.

Google
Wonderful bakery with fresh baked bread and sandwiches. I ordered the prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich and they put plenty of meat. Their prices are very reasonable. I bought a small baguette for $1 and the sandwich for $7.99. They only take cash.

Kevin Xu

Google
The soppressata and mozzarella sandwich is so good and a steal at $9! Cash only so keep that in mind.

Google
Low priced options for lunch. Amazing bread and fresh mozzarella. One of my local favs...You can get a massive sandwich with fresh mozzarella (love the shredded lettuce) for only $6...cash-only here... And the cookies are amazing... Go for the rainbow cookies...

Google
Pecoraro aka antique bakery is a great spot for fresh bread and some key sandwiches. As far as their bread, they've got a solid variety and also have breads stuffed with, eggplant, olives, sausage, or pepperoni. They're chicken parm is, I think, the best in jersey city. They toast the bread, have a good amount of juicy white chicken breast on it, good sauce, good cheese, and what they don't that gives it the extra pop it needs and you didn't realize a chicken parm needed prior to having it, was graded parmigiana cheese on top. It's called a parmigiana because of where it derives from in Italy, not the mozzarella cheese they use, but now you can get a parm with parm on it.

Yelp
Fire a** sandwich for real. Maybe could have had a tad bit less vinegar and more basil, but overall a bombshell. So good. I would ten thousand percent go back to this place and get another sandwich but probably try a warm instead of a cold. The employees here are so kind and know the menu like the back of their hand. Cute little shop that also sells cookies and fresh baguettes! Very cozy in this bakery, love the atmosphere We also bought a baguette, not pictured, but we plan on using it to dip in an olive oil sauce.

Yelp
Had the munchies and stopped by Pecoraro Antique Bakery. Although the name is fancy, it's not fancy at all. It looks like a run-of-the-mill corner deli, with freshly baked bread and cookies on the shelves, cookies by the box from $5 -$14+, a fridge with sodas and various beverages, a coffee machine, and a deli fridge with fresh veggies and cold cuts for the sandwiches. They have a breakfast and lunch menu that offers fresh-cut sandwiches with all the trimmings. Premade sandwiches range between $6 - $7 and freshly made cold or hot sandwiches cost between $8 - $10. We got the prosciutto hero for $9, which she prepared right in front of us, which was hefty with meat and big enough to feed 2. And everything tasted good. My only complaint was that the bread on both sandwiches was a bit chewy. So, not sure how fresh they were. One good bonus is that all the basic add-ons like lettuce, tomatoes, and onions are free, they dont nickel and dime you. Premium toppings like sun-dried tomatoes and peppers only bump you up $1 more. The service was good, we were served by a nice Hispanic lady. This bakery only accepts cash. But they have an ATM on site so you don't have to take a walk. If you're hungry and looking for a good quality sandwich at a reasonable price on Grove St, go to Pecoraro!

Yelp
This is my longtime favorite Italian bakery and I haven't been since we moved to Texas 7 years ago. I'm so glad it's still here! All the stuffed loaves are all unbelievably delicious. My favorite is the sausage bread but olives is a close second. The sandwiches are amazing bc of the bread and fresh mozzarella. It's a take out place so find a nice bench in the Newark Avenue pedestrian mall to eat and people watch.

Yelp
Old school cash only Italian deli 1 block from Second Street. They similarly offer cheap 9 inch subs with homemade ingredients, as well as bread baked in house. I got the chicken parm sub ($9) and a small Italian baguette ($2). The sub was very good, but the chicken could use a little more moisture and flavor, and the bread was tough

Paul C.

Yelp
This place is legendary and lives up to it. The sandwiches were great and service was amazing. Despite it being almost closing time they took care of us like we were family.

Yelp
I go here a lot. I have loved the bread and food from day 1. I have tasted almost everything and still come running back. My wife loves it as well. I always make sure I have some cash on hand if I'm close by to it. They only take cash. Go and get a sandwich you'll be amazed
google avatar

Yelp
I am biased because I like this place. Jersey City is so weird. A place like this should have a ton of reviews. I know it's very unassuming and Reddit prefers 2nd Street Bakery, but there is just something charming about this place. Like a pit bull in a pink fluffy dress. I can't explain it. But go in with the intention of spending $10 cash. Grab three focaccia, an eggplant bread, and mozzarella and spinach bread. Grab your bag (say "Thank you" you savage) and be confused when you get change back. Or go to Keyfoods and spend ya whole check on some thin mints.

Yelp
the pepperoni bread is the greatest thing on earth! i love this place and am sad i moved away but i stop in everytime i pass jersey city.

Yelp
I'm sorry to write this review because many of their other items are fine, but BREAD is the mainstay of good bakery and the last 5 times I bought a "fresh" loaf (white, wheat, semolina), within days it got sticky and gummy and inedible. It is usually a sign that the bread is undercooked. But after some research, I found that it suffers from Rope spoilage, which is a quality defect in bread caused by microbial activity. It can become a major food safety, health and economic concern if the not properly addressed by the owners. I do not know if this problem existed when they operated in Hoboken, but ever since buying their bread in J.City, this has been a pattern. Please look into it in order to keep your customers (or worse, be cited by the Health Dept).

Yelp
So I stopped in here a couple of weeks ago after being away for more than a decade. I picked up a mixed stuffed bread. To be honest, it was a bit strange. It seemed like it was cheddar cheese along with the pepperoni and sausage. Perhaps it was the oil from the meat that turned the cheese a weird orange-y color. It was pretty good, but perhaps not the best choice. (They didn't have much left on a late Saturday afternoon - about 45 minutes before closing.) I would definitely try again - and try something difference as well as their plain breads.

Yelp
Finally visited best sandwiches in jersey city! I said it! Thank you for staying around and providing the people with great food and bread!

Yelp
The sandwich is BOMB. I wanna buy more bread but I'm trying to cut some carbs. Still!!! The sandwich is sooo good. Just one bite, I wanna quit school and work for them.

Yelp
What a local gem. This is a no-frills Italian bakery selling all kinds of fresh brick oven breads, Italian cookies, and made-to-order sandwiches. The storefront doesn't look like much (blink and you'll miss it!), but it has a lot to offer. I noticed the stuffed breads were selling out, so I decided to try the prosciutto & mozzarella bread and the eggplant parm bread. Both were fantastic! Although the prosciutto & mozzarella were unevenly spread throughout the bread, when you get a bite of both, it's like a match made in heaven. The eggplant parm was also delicious - the baked eggplant was soft without being soggy and the tomato sauce was light and sweet. I would absolutely come back for the eggplant parm. While I was here I noticed someone ordering a sandwich, and all the ingredients were freshly cut on the spot. What a perfect simple lunch and so affordable at only $6! Why go to Subway's when you can get a fresh footlong with quality bread here. Remember to bring money when you stop by. This place is cash only.

Martin C.

Yelp
I've been there many times and I've always loved the food there, especially the fresh mozzarella, but this time when I went, and for 10$ of mozzarella, and she would not sell it to. It's a cash only business and that's all I had on me but the woman behind the counter said she needed more money she wanted 12$ but I had no more cash, so I left and may never return.

Yelp
Old school and a breadth of fresh air. Get the chicken parmigiana sandwich, it's amazing. The stuffed breads are good, though a tad bit too much bread for my pallet. Pick up some bread on your way back from the PATH! Italian sandwiches for lunch tomorrow!
google avatar

Yelp
Great local shop - as others have said, it's tiny, but great traditional Italian sandwich for a decent price, including fresh made mozzarella. Love it.

Yelp
I am a big fan of Pecorano Bakery or as the sign out front says 'Antique Bakery.' The ladies inside are friendly and will serve you delicious carbs with a smile. My main choice here is the stuffed breads - cheese, prosciutto, sausage - how can you go wrong? They also serve up some tasty sandwiches. I recommend the Cuban - it's not on the menu but it truly hits the spot. Bring some cash as no plastic is accepted!
google avatar

Ed R.

Yelp
It's usually a good thing when you walk into a bakery and everyone is speaking Italian. First off the place was spotless and all I got was a buttered roll but which was very good. Was convenient that they had tea and the lady behind the counter was very nice. Would definitely come back here to try other things.

Bo T.

Yelp
Ordered a sub sandwich with real mozzarella the old school way with ham and salami on real Italian bread baked right there in the premises. So happy I went there. Took it wrapped in butcher paper again, the old school way. Walked half a block, sat down on a street bench under a shade tree and enjoyed a moment of zen. The sandwich was great too!!!

Yelp
Let's leave the Bay and go a few blocks west on Newark past Jersey Ave downtown. One word: Do not pass Go when you get here, though you might not think much of the facade, which looks like any ol' variety store or deli shop at first glance--you came to the right spot, though you might also think otherwise because of the name (the awning does say Antique, not Pecoraro, but don't ask me about this shepherd's biz affair). Open the door and get in... Final word: Or stay away IF you're afraid of carbs. Otherwise, do as the guy and I did and proceed with: 1. Olive loaf... Because every tasty bite was packed with olives. 2. Spinach loaf. Every tasty bite had enough spinach and mozzarella. 3. Eggplant loaf. Though I wish the eggplant to dough ratio was higher and the taste more flavorful... 4. Do 1-3 in one visit. 2.. Make plans to burn off the hideous, horrid health-busting carbs. 5. Then make plans to give the Focaccia a chance at your palate in your next visit... Extra words: The agreeable prices (the foot-long loaves are $5 ea.) should make you happy as you sip your coffee from Batata... (Although some reviews raise doubts about the quality of the ingredients here... You do the research, as my head's already spinning from overthinking and just needs to (d)numb down with caffeine and pretend bad things don't exist.) Additional note: Ignore the choco meh here, which your OCD already spent a few bucks on. (Just get me another drink sans sugar and you're welcome. (Try Cafe Bene if you're still craving a nice choco muffin that isn't too sweet to be naive about the ill effects of too much sugar from the fairy.)

Yelp
Pecoraro makes what could be the tastiest bread I've ever had. I'd been meaning to check the place out for quite some time and now, living a block away, I figured I had no excuse for not hauling my tired self out of bed at noon on a Saturday and strolling on down. Pecoraro serves a pretty wide selection of breads, croissants, rolls, and stuffed breads, all of which are quite cheap. I went with a sausage bread: a decent sizes full loaf of fresh bread stuffed with sausage. The sausage, even when cold, had a nice hit of fennel but, that bread... The bread is at once crisp and fluffy, dense yet light, chewy and soft. Everything you look for in bread. Pecoraro is very highly recommended.
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't penned a review for this spot yet! I'll get straight to the point: sausage bread. Can there be anything less healthy (let's be honest, or amazing) then bread stuffed with delicious sausage? This whole in the wall, old school bakery serves up carbs like nobody's bizness. I have yet to dabble in their baguettes or croissants, but their various stuffed breads, you betcha. If you're looking for cakes, cookies and pies, keep movin' sister. Only the real deal bread bakery here. I've had olive, spinach and the various meat breads and they are delicious. Put a slice in the toaster, heat it up and it's amazing. I do have to say that I like 2nd St. Bakery's sausage bread better. It has more stuffing, Pecoraro's bread was a bit more bready and less of the good stuff(ing). Breads range from $4 for veggie and $5 for meat and I'm not quite sure pricing on non stuffed bread items. They typically close when they sell out or just are out of stuff, so do try to visit earlier in the day since what they cook in the AM is what their inventory's for the day. Happy carbing!
google avatar

Gabby G.

Yelp
Pecoraro is a gem. Their sandwiches are huge, stuffed with quality meat and cheese, and very affordable. One $9 sandwich is enough for two, easily. In addition, their stuffed loaves are so good, as are the pizzas. They are cash only, but have an ATM on site.

M C.

Yelp
Best sandwiches ever. On top of that the bread is really good too. Such a good price too. Dont know why the phone number is wrong on yelp but they are 100% open.
google avatar

Jake C.

Yelp
Great Sandwich. Delicious homemade bread really made it. They were very flexible with my order and add ons. If your a fan of deli sandwiches its a must try.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Great local bakery! I will definitely be back. I got the Italian bread with sesame seeds and it was very good. I even froze it and it still lasted. The woman behind the counter was very nice and helpful. Unfortunately, they were out of semolina bread, but I did go around 5pm. I will be back because I did see the sign for fresh mozzarella and not having an Italian Deli by me is KILLING me. Overall, it is close by, clean, helpful and has great bread so I will be returning.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Was surprised to realize I hadn't written a review as this is one of my favorite places in JC. The stuffed breads are shockingly heavy, perhaps because they are somehow loaded with enough oil to make a paper bag translucent by the time you get home. And I mean this as a compliment, these are not healthy by any means but they sure are great! Pepperoni and spinach (broccoli rabe if they have it) are my faves, but as others have said you really do have to get here early to ensure they're not sold out. I like to show up on a Saturday morning, buy 2 and slowly pick at them all weekend. There are rarely leftovers by Monday. Regular breads are good as well, though not as stellar as the stuffed breads. Pizza IMHO is not really worth it - they've got the crust down, but the cheese and sauce are mediocre. Who cares anyway, stuffed breads are the star attraction here.
google avatar

Karla S.

Yelp
Omg so good. I just walked in for the first time this evening and got the small foccacia w/ tom sauce on top and ate the whole thing (while walking) before even getting home! Everything looked so fresh and delicious and the woman behind the counter was very nice. I WILL BE BACK! YUM
google avatar

Jerome K.

Yelp
Love this spot!! I always get my croissants and blue berry muffins from there. Sandwiches are good too!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome old school New York Italian bakery...one of the few left in NYC! Bread is cooked via a coal fire oven - and they sell a large variety including the amazing LARD BREAD (prosciutto bread). Prices are very reasonable!!
google avatar

Miranda B.

Yelp
If I could double the amount of stars I would hands down to start with. This bakery makes the BEST breads on the planet and is so reasonable that it amazes me. For Easter they offer easter breads in shapes and such. The family who owns it run it and are wonderful people, each and every one of them. I look forward to going there and highly advise a try. Authentic JC Italian breads at it's best!!!!!!!!! Also: sausage/pepperoni/or mozz breads are so good, you can have them for dinner! This is a serious bread spot guys, go there and freeze up a few loafs, but go early, because we who know of Peccs breads will wipe the place clean by 2-3pm and then your outta luck.
google avatar

Beverly W.

Yelp
Great Italian cookies for a fantastic price. I brought two pounds of cookies home with me. My new "haunt" in Jersey City! Cash only though no credit cards!
google avatar

Jen T.

Yelp
Old school place to buy bread. Don't be fooled the bread is yummy!!!! One of the last originals places in JC to buy good bread. Support local businesses!!!!
google avatar

N S.

Yelp
I am obviously missing something here. I've had two bad experiences, but judging from the Yelp reviews, it sounds like they were the exception rather than the rule! The bread is fresh and good, and the prices are great.. I'll give you that. What turned me off was the way I was treated at the store. The first time I walked in, I asked the woman at the counter about the prices for their breads (I didn't see prices marked). She responded, but she rattled the prices off in a mocking tone, raising her voice so that her "regulars" could hear. I felt like I was being made fun of for being a naive newbie to the store. The second time I went, I got there later in the day right before they closed. This time, there was a man behind the counter who said, "ya get what's left!" as soon as I walked in. Two times. Both times I felt completely unwelcome. I'd like to try more of their breads, but I don't understand why my experiences have been so unpleasant when there are so many great Yelp reviews here. Maybe I will try going to Steam Cafe from now on?
google avatar

Denise C.

Yelp
When all that separates you from awesome carb overload is a creaky screen door and maybe a cat, you know you've hit the jackpot. I love everything Pecoraro has to offer. Their regular loaves have the perfect balance of outside chew and inner tenderness. However, as many others have said, the stuffed breads are the best. I usually go in with the intention of buying just one, then walk out with two or all three: one sausage, one pepperoni, and one olive. While they are all excellent, the olive is my favorite. You will get olives in every bite, and if you aren't an olive fan, this bread may turn you into one. The prices are super cheap and it's hard to imagine why anyone would pay triple the amount at the grocery when something of this quality is right in the neighborhood. Everyone in the place is friendly and personable, whether it's someone working there, someone hanging out, or someone running in to get a loaf for dinner. Get there early or you won't get anything, and make sure you bring cash! Also, they make brick oven pizza on the weekends!
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
Genuine. No cookies, no cakes, just excellent breads. When I lived around the corner in the late '80's & early '90's I stopped there every day on my way to work. They were such a part of my daily routine that I contracted with them to bake all the bread for my wedding. I stopped back in today and was thrilled that the place looks the same, the products are just as good as they were 20 years ago, and the staff just as friendly. Yes, it has changed owners, but the new ones have kept the winning formula. You'll not find a better bakery in Jersey City.
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
Pecoraro's looks like it's been there forever; in truth it's only been 100 years, give or take. It's smack dab in the middle of downtown Jersey City's old Italian Village section and more than lives up to its heritage. Get here early and snag one of the many varieties of stuffed breads -- the sausage, pepperoni or olive loaves are my favorites. If they're sold out or closed, try asking at Steam, the coffee shop across the street, which also sells their bread.
google avatar

Erica K.

Yelp
Delicious and cheap! Staff is super friendly! Their cookies are amazing and their olive bread is addicting!
google avatar

Ling C.

Yelp
if you like cheesy bread with stuffings, this is the place for you. We tried the spinach mozzarella, prosciutto & pepperoni!! must try! They're only $5 each and the bread is huge!
google avatar

R P.

Yelp
This place is a local gem--the definition of a hole in the wall. It's been open almost 100 years (though it's changed hands a few times). Donna, the proprietor is friendly and knowledgeable. The bread is terrific and super fresh. Make sure you ask to have it sliced (they have an industrial strength slicer in the back) unless you have a really sharp bread knife at home. I've tried the plain white, the semolina, and the whole wheat. All are fantastic: crusty on the outside, soft on the inside. The croissants are amazing. Come early for those, though; on weekends, they're all gone by 10 or 11 in the morning. Added bonus: everything is super cheap. $3 for a giant roll of white bread. $3.50 for semolina.
google avatar

Archaeo g.

Yelp
We were staying at an Airbnb around the corner and came here for sandwiches. We ordered the eggplant parmesan and a prosciutto and mozzarella. Both were delicious and I would definitely come back. They bake their own bread and it shows. Cookies were so so with some varieties better tasting than others.
google avatar

Deborah D.

Yelp
Just a note that I drove by at 7:45 AM yesterday and saw a guy unloading what looked like several hundred pounds of flour to Pecoraro's. Love that this place bakes everything on the premises, just as it has done for generations. Love that it's got that charming, old-world feel. Love its delicious, wholesome breads! A+, Pecoraro's! You make me proud to live in the "Italian Village" section of Downtown JC!

Yelp
We fell in love with their bread at a restaurant in Closter, NJ, and finally asked the owner where they source their bread from. So we made a pilgrimage to Jersey City and stocked up on bread for the freezer (it freezes and reheats beautifully) and also got a prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwich while there. The sandwich was heavenly, made to my exact specs, and generously stuffed with good-quality deli. The prices are crazy reasonable. I've been back since for the sandwich and more bread. Our favorite bread is the round white boule (?) both regular and huge sizes. My only quibble was the braided whole wheat bread with sesame, which was freshly made but when we got it home, discovered that it was moldy. Guessing it was bagged while still hot, plus it was the dead of summer and the place isn't air conditioned. Still, the bakers need to be aware of this and I hope they read their reviews. My advice: go for the bread and the sandwiches, but inspect your loaves before leaving the shop. Hands down, it's the best bread in the entire area and worth a trip.
google avatar

George C.

Yelp
Same as Antique Bakery nearby (which was renovating on our visit), this place dished up a solid 'Italian loaf'.
google avatar

kiddeft k.

Yelp
I come here for two items because they do them the best! Stuffed breads and focaccia! The stuffed breads are made with the right amounts of meats and cheese and the focaccia is darn tasty. Sometimes when I go, someone buys up all their breads the moment they open in the morning, leaving me out in the cold. That's how good it is.
google avatar

Bloss C.

Yelp
Very nice staff and a great selection of yummy bread. Getting there early will get you the largest selection, but getting there late in the day will get you some great discounts on what's left. Love old school stores like this one!
google avatar

Yelp
This bakery is nice. The people there are nice and thier muffins are delicious. I had no problems there i enjot going there. Made me feel comfortable always go there when i get my pedicure across the street.

Yelp
I love this place! The staff is so friendly and the baked goods are out of this world! We try and go here atleast once a week! :) Everything is always super fresh and so authentic!
