"Peel is a newcomer to the mango barter economy this year, and they’re a fitting addition considering this fruit-based soft serve spot is all about rescuing and reusing fruit. They are accepting five pounds of mangos in exchange for one small bowl of soft serve. Honestly, it’s not the most economic deal in Miami’s blossoming mango barter economy. But you can hold onto your mangos and still come here for a mango moment—order the mango flavor and top it with diced cubes of mango. "Peel is a little shop that does a very brilliant thing with bananas: it turns them into soft serve. That’s pretty much what you can expect here—banana-based soft serve with rotating flavor twists like mango or matcha (plus some very cute banana art). Even though it’s not technically ice cream, Peel nails that light, fluffy soft serve consistency. "Peel isn’t technically new—this banana-based soft serve concept was in pop-up mode before 2023. But this was the year Peel finally got their own shop, consistent hours, and a slightly expanded menu. That’s enough newness for us. Peel has not only added another excellent spot to Miami’s soft serve map, but they’ve added something entirely unique to our dessert scene too. There’s nowhere else making this kind of fruit-based soft serve, and certainly no one doing it as sustainably by using locally rescued fruit and giving away every banana peel to a farm for compost." - virginia otazo, ryan pfeffer
