I’ve been coming to Peach Coffee in Berkeley for a while now, and I usually stop here whenever I’m in town visiting my girlfriend. Most of the time, the staff has been friendly and the experience has been solid, which is why this visit really caught me off guard. I don’t believe an entire business should be judged off one employee or one bad day but this experience was genuinely frustrating.
I ordered a drink and a warmed pastry. I received my drink first, which was fine, but after waiting several minutes I mentioned that I was still waiting on my pastry. The employee told me she’d get it right away and walked over to the oven. While I was standing there, I watched her place five other orders into the oven before even starting mine. Those orders were then handed out, and she came back to ask me what I had ordered even though my order was already on display and had just been discussed.
I told her I ordered a Danish, and she repeatedly asked me if I wanted it warmed at least five times even after I clearly said yes each time. Despite this, she continued putting other orders into the oven before mine. At this point, I had already been waiting over 15 minutes for a simple pastry, while having received my drink 5–10 minutes earlier.
What made this more confusing is that I was the first person in line, and everyone who ordered after me had already left. The store wasn’t busy, and there was no crowd waiting for pickups, yet multiple orders were handled before mine even after she acknowledged my order more than once.
The attitude, tone, and lack of urgency were disappointing. It felt like there was very little care given to simply completing my order and getting me on my way. Normally, I’ve always received food first at cafés, or at least everything together, so this experience didn’t make much sense. Unfortunately, this experience was frustrating enough that I won’t be returning to this location.
