A North Davis Location of Bay Area-Born Peet’s Coffee Just Became the First in the Country to Unionize | Eater SF

"At 231 E Street in downtown Davis, workers withdrew a petition to hold a union vote, and the company subsequently offered those employees a one-time $500 bonus “to recognize the extra time those employees had invested leading up to and during the petition process,” per a company spokesperson; an organizer from that outpost said that even though they didn’t unionize, it was exciting to be in the room when the Covell Boulevard vote happened and that this is "just the first step" in a broader wave." - Paolo Bicchieri

Staff at this Peet’s has always been friendly and helpful; making us feel welcomed. Ample seating inside and outside. We ordered 2 hot sandwiches, a latte, and a hot tea - all great-tasting!

Google
Usually fast, somewhat consistent. Better than the North Davis Peets (and obviously on campus Peets) as well. North Davis had a really weak bitter cold brew but this place was proper. Plenty of spacious counters and tables for working and chatting; there's always room unlike the other shops downtown. Don't need to buy anything to use the restrooms and pretty quick service.

Breakfast sandwich was basic with eggs, cheese, and bread, but it was very tasty. Coffee was on point as well. The best part was the friendly staff and speedy service.

Google
As a chain of coffee place it is an amazing place. The employees are super nice and they will give you a coffee with a heart foam. They have a shop area and their items are pretty refined. They have a large variety of teas. But still I miss are wish a place where the coffee is served in a real cup, ceramic or porcelain mug. Prices razonable. The place is clean.

Saahil S.

Google
This is only the best Peet's coffee I've ever had! I always order a mocha frappe with extra cinnamon and pumps to really distinguish the mocha from the coffee. The atmosphere is also quintessential for college students, since I can always get a maximum amount of work done. That said, I wish there was more seating.

Google
The staff and environment make this my go-to place when I want to do work somewhere that's not my home. Everyone who works here is super friendly and there's a million wall outlets to plug in my laptop and get work done. The coffee itself is not the best I've ever had, but it's still quite good, and the people who make it will give you exactly what you're looking for and are very knowledgeable and friendly when it comes to accommodating for diet restrictions.

Google
Nice coffee place, Location is very good, and its in university... outside place is very nice... nice street way... well maintained and friendly staff.

Google
Just take away, but the coffee is good (hard to find in the US), and service was very fast and very pleasant. A few places to sit outside with your laptop or a friend, which is rare these days. I just had a cappuccino, but maybe the fancy drinks looked good (didn't try one yet). I heard that before Covid this was a nice place to sit inside and work on your laptop.

Yelp
It's always quiet and peaceful here, perfect for working, reading, or casually chatting with friends. The cardamom drinks are absolutely delicious, and enjoyed the contrast of coffee pearls with the iced matcha. Service is quick and very friendly, the baristas are very sweet and attentive. The sugar and syrup they make doesn't leave a strange after taste, which I get from some other coffee shops.

Yelp
Man, what a disappointment!! The cutesy town has four coffee shops within a five to seven block radius and I was not in the mood for Philz or the other goofy coffee brands. I just wanted a drink I am familiar with, to enjoy whilst strolling about town. Short line and smiles abound behind the counter. Ordered up two of my all time favorite drinks from Pedro's and I was just preparing to be pleasantly content. I don't need to be blown away by Pedro's. I stop in for consistency and value. Havana cappuccino is my favorite thing about this menu. It's a delightful treat and I have enjoyed this drink at least 32 times previously. Rich, creamy, thickness and not overly sweet beverage. That's the goal. This drink had wayyyyyyyyy too much milk and it was not foamed. It was literally like warm milk like grandma used to promote in the 60's! Absolutely dreadful and I'm super disappointed after hoping it would be good and I kept drinking a bad drink. Awful. I literally tossed it in the trash. Do. Better. Please. This is not a complicated endeavor and it's literally barista 101.

Yelp
Visited this location Feb 1st because I had a gift card. The staff was great!!! The service was fast. And like any coffee shop in a college town it was full of brain power churning in every corner. With all this activity- sadly... I take off a star because the bathroom was out of order. A coffee shop with no bathroom???? Tried a specialty drink (recommended by the cashier) and a brew. Both delicious.

Yelp
Love me a Peet's cold brew. Is it the best ever? Nah It's an easy drink to procure up and down California. Found in most airports as well. Far superior to Starbucks. Service was accommodating and their ambiance completely chill.

Paula V.

Yelp
They always make my iced vanilla latte perfect at this location. I get it with no foam and its perfectly balanced. The matcha is not good though.

Yelp
Whenever we visit downtown Davis for lunch, we stop by here for dessert to get our hot beverage fix. Upon entering the coffee shop, it was packed with students, which I agree from a previous Yelper's post that it is a great study place. There was no line when we arrived. We ordered a medium decaf mocha, extra hot with whip cream and one less pump of syrup. Also ordered a peach scone which i got warmed. The hot mocha and scone was delicious. The staff is super friendly and the establishment is clean. The only drawback was that the restrooms were out of order. The location is off of G Street. There's street parking outside. There's plentiful street parking. If you are parked a few blocks away, you have no problem walking anywhere within downtown to get here.

Joan R.

Yelp
Great to have Peet's in our shopping center without having to go into town for a cuppa Joe. The latte was excellent the three times I had one there. Good baristas and fast service. A few private tables where you can have a quiet conversation.

J C.

Yelp
After taken our order with holidaty antlers on, ordered two peppermint mocha with almond milk. One had too much peppermint the other bah humbug. Barista must be having a bad day

Yelp
Stopped in to have coffee this morning. I got the Holiday spice latte. Yum ! Like a cup of fall. The staff we super nice. Service was fast , coffee was hot. Clean and warm inside. Not too busy. It was a nice place to relax and chat .

Christalina B.

Yelp
They were super speedy, had absolutely delicious coffee , delicious food, and were the most friendly and nice people I'd ever met! I love Peet's in general, but this is definitely a top location in my book. Also had a super chill vibe and a good choice of music. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
I love a large iced mocha with whole milk, no whip, lite ice, and a turkey, bacon, cheese on brioche.

Yelp
Drinks are good. However, I was completely turned off by the friendly fly making itself familiar with each and every danish. I asked if there were other baked goods that had not been put out for display. I was told no. With that being said, I left hungry on pursuit to the next establishment that offers fresh, non contaminated food.. I am not interested in sharing food with a fly.

Rachel A.

Yelp
Genuinely the best oat latte I've had in a long while. thank you to whoever made it. I go to many overpriced, craft coffee shops and this was a far better experience-both coffee and interaction. All the employees were kind and helpful. Latte had feels of coffee cloud, a beautiful merging of me + latte.
google avatar

Aileen M.

Yelp
I love me some Peets. I can always count on Peets for a great cup of coffee at any of their locations. Lots of students hang out at this location to study but it's a spacious location with a good number of tables and chairs - there is outdoor seating too! The barista who took our order was friendly and rung us up quickly. Two delicious Caramel Javivas and half a pound of Uruzi beans later, we left as happy campers!

Yelp
When I moved away I missed peet's coffee . The staff used to know my drink by heart . Great service and the staffs are always so friendly .

Yelp
I love the coffee!!! The service was impeccable they were so kind and quick! I love doing my homework in here!

Yelp
Davis staple :) cute store, friendly staff. They've forgotten my syrup in a latte before, but it's no big deal. I've told them I'm lactose intolerant and they go out of their way to make sure they use a clean pitcher to steam the milk.

Yelp
I hate to waste my time writing this pointless review however the culture in the store was so offensive I want to give the regional managment a head's up. I visited on Feb 11th and was in line behind an employee who had a long personal conversation with the person working the register, before he went in back and started eating something. Then, it was my turn to order and the clerk was moderately dismissive, but not offensive. I placed my order for a drip coffee and walked to the area where the drinks were being delivered. A few minutes went by and I asked if I missed my coffee and the clerk said "oh, I'm going to brew a fresh pot." This was irritating because if a person is concerned about their customer's experience they would acknowledge the delay, not simply leave them standing waiting, and then be offended when the customer (me) asks about his coffee. I asked for a refund and the clerk said she issued it, the other worker was offended and snorted "for real?" when the first clerk told her to cancel the order. I love Peet's coffee, its my favorite, but the culture in the store is not okay. They seem to think its their social club, and the customers are simply an inconvenience. NOTE: I HAVE NOT RECEIVED MY REFUND!

Ryan L.

Yelp
Waited five minutes at the cash register and could not get anyone to take my order for a black coffee. Went to Philz a block away for better coffee and superior customer service.

Yelp
I'm always in the mood for coffee and I usually do like Peet's, as it's readily available throughout campus and they have good coffee. I was running errands in downtown davis and decided to stop by this location to get some coffee. The location was packed but no one was in line so I decided to take some time to decide on the menu. I was talking to the barista and asking for suggestions/what some drinks were made of and she didn't seem like she was interested in helping me out, even though I just wanted some clarifications. I just decided to get an iced coffee since I wasn't getting clear answers and the coffee was alright. I'll come back again and hopefully the experience goes better.

Yelp
GO AGAIN? Yes, but I HATE the remodel. I cannot sit in the high chairs because my legs are too long to be comfortable on the rung and too short to reach the floor while sitting. The new chairs outside are very uncomfortable, as well. I noticed that the high tables are the last to be used. It is so bad I am considering going elsewhere after years of going to Peets, even though I've been coming to this Peet's many, many times for years. HAVE AGAIN: I always enjoy the iced tea - 4 stars.

Yelp
Gotta show some love for my Peet's. I'm a girl from the Bay, right near Berkeley (where it all started!) and I have frequented many Peet's locations. I was excited that when I transferred to Davis for school, they had a Peet's downtown. Their coffee tastes amazing! I like more bitter, less sweet coffee, so for me personally, Peet's fits the bill. Also, I don't know their name, but the British (I think they're British!) individual with reddish hair who works behind the counter is so freaking sweet everytime I come in! Complimented me on my tattoos last time I was there, and told me about the Peet's rewards program, which I previously did not know about. I'm still giving them five stars because the following isn't really their fault- I wish the shop was a little bigger, because if you want to grab a seat, you need to come at a good time. During the week in the afternoon, or early morning. But regardless, they are usually pretty packed and can be one of the noisier places if you're trying to study. Also, be careful about parking! I parked outside in front for just over two hours during the week, and I got a parking ticket. So, I'm not sure where you can park for longer than two hours downtown, but it's something to be aware of. They'll come for ya.
google avatar

Monica H.

Yelp
Peet's is my favorite chain coffee business - Starbucks doesn't stand a chance! The Davis location is in the heart of downtown and neighbors Chipotle. Great for a food break during long days of studying! I enjoy coming here to study and read - there's a lot of tables plus bar and outdoor seating. The only downside is that many others do the same and it's hard to find seating especially during finals week. The service varies based on who's working, but most of them are really great. At the end of the day, I'm thankful for a Peet's in my college town!
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
I spend some time here studying at least once a week, and it's generally a pleasant experience, but I have to take stars off because it's always cold!! Year round, it's generally very chilly in here. Even in 90 degree weather, I bring a jacket or sweater with me just so I'm not freezing in Peets. I don't get cold particularly easily, and I know it's not just me because I've heard others complaining about it. Every time I'm here, most others have sweaters on too. Apart from this, the experience is good. My iced teas and chai lattes are yummy, I can always get a table, and most staff are friendly. A couple of baristas come off as distant or cold, but a couple of them are very charismatic and super helpful.
google avatar

Yelp
This Peet's location is a great place to study or to chill with friends. It's located on F street next to Chipotle. They have a good selection of coffee, pastries, and coffee beans. Line moves quickly and service is super fast, I've never waited for more than 5 minutes. I usually get the medium roast coffee or the mocha. Coffee is always freshly brewed and at perfect temperature. Staff is always friendly and are welcoming. It's pretty clean and usually stocked with milk, cup holders, sugar, etc... It's definately affordable since its not costly as the hipster coffee places. I'll definately want to try out some of the seasonal drinks :)

Ruth S.

Yelp
There could have been a second cashier! It was very slow. But it was picnic day.
google avatar

Tiffany K.

Yelp
I remember coming to this location before it was Peet's. I think it was called Espresso Metro or Espresso Roma or something trendy like that. My friends went to UCDavis so we hung out here ALL the time. These days, the alleyway adjoining Chipotles next door is still there; great spot for brisk sunny days as it blocks the wind, but you still get the sun. Love this location as you have frozen yogurt next door and you're right in the center of things. Sure it may not have that "I'm-so-cool-at-this-cafe" vibe, but you know that you'll end up with quality coffee.
google avatar

Albert A.

Yelp
I order just medium roast or dark roast coffee, plain with maybe some 2% milk. However, I used to say "All coffee is the same." However, I had the opportunity to drink the other major coffee brand vs Peet's and I have to say that the coffee was definitely better. This location is relatively packed since it is in the heart of downtown. It is often hard to find a place to sit. I see a lot of people studying or working here but there is too much traffic for me.
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
I am a regular here sipping on my favorite drinks, such as the vanilla lattes and berry pomegranate iced tea cooler for the summer! Their coffee is consistent and the aroma while walking in is super nice. As a student, it's a great place to study or read a newspaper because the other coffee places in Davis is often crowded with students cramming for midterms or finals. The downside about the whole chain of Peet's Coffee and Tea is that they require a code for you to be able to access the complimentary Wi-fi. One code per drink purchase. Not only do you have to ask for the code, the code lasts just for an hour. I don't think that is customer friendly nor convenient. I also had a few encounters when the cashiers asked if I have purchased a drink in order to obtain a code. I find it rather insulting since I come here quite frequently. Negative points there.
google avatar

Angela A.

Yelp
ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES TO STUDY IN DOWNTOWN DAVIS. First of all, their wifi is great and it is next to CHIPOTLE. Also, their customer service is outstanding. The baristas work hard and show care on their part. I love it when they do latte art. Little things like that make me happy. Yes!! Go Peet's Coffee! Coffee tastes great and great service!! I highly recommend.
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
I like Peet's, but this location is one of my least favorites. I have a hard time with people setting up camp to work for hours on end, while people who are looking for 15-20 minutes can't find a place to sit. Please, if you set up camp, don't take up the seat next to you at the high top as well. What did I learn today? It wasn't college kids setting up camp.

Emilia S.

Yelp
Update: the management has changed and employees seem much happier! Both the atmosphere and the drinks are better and the employees seem more confident! Keep it up downtown!
google avatar

Matvei V.

Yelp
I like this location because it's convenient, but lately it's been the gathering spot for bums, tweakers and their social workers, and straight up religious fanatics. I know they added keys to the bathrooms, but considering the extremely limited seating available at this location, I'd like it if they also try and keep the crazies out too. Some of us do have real work to do.
google avatar

S H.

Yelp
Peet's Coffee is my favorite place for beans or an espresso. Never been to this location but my iced espresso was spot on perfect.
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
This is my favorite place downtown. Staff is amazing and drinks are just as great. It's a comfortable place to meet up with friends and relax over a cup of coffee or tea. They also have a phone app that you can collect points on to get rewards later on. Their coffee tastes great and they always make my favorite drink (the tea black tie) perfectly. They also have single all gender bathrooms inside (you just have to get the key)!
google avatar

Carlene D.

Yelp
Crowded and no bathrooms but good coffee. I enjoyed a latte and cookie, and my kids got two cookies as well and enjoyed them
google avatar

Romi C.

Yelp
I think this is great place for studying, it has its rush hours but for the most part its set up so that it dopant get too crowded which i appreciate it. Coffee wise, I've had stronger coffee but i enjoy it.
google avatar

John Y.

Yelp
Everyone is always super nice and the place has a really chill vibe. Never have a problem with my drinks. Consistent with making them.

Victoria L.

Yelp
Great location at downtown Davis. Comfortable interior but I feel like this place is not as well decorated as other Peets, tables were scarce and there's a huge awkward space between the door and the counter. Nothing major though. Super friendly and nice staff, and great coffee:) Btw, they are doing a promotion right now where you get $1 off if you show your pokemon!! Favorites: * Iced latte - large ($4.30)
google avatar

Hen A.

Yelp
spacious peet's location...plenty of tables....finding delight in the cold brew...the black tie drink is great....cold brew coffee with condensed milk...refreshing and perfect for hot days...good balance of sweet, milky and coffee...nothing overpowering one another...
google avatar

Marissa L.

Yelp
My family and I came here after lunch for a nice warm beverage to help us get through the afternoon. The place was pretty crowded and there was a little bit of a line. The line wasn't that long of a wait and the woman at the cashier was very friendly and helpful. I just got a small peppermint mocha with whipped cream. I'm normally not a big peppermint person, but I really wanted a mocha. We waited a bit for our drinks since there were a couple people that ordered before us, but not too long. My drink turned out perfect. My drink was warm and not to hot, I could drink it right away. The peppermint was very mild, not too overbearing. This place is great, love it.
google avatar

L R.

Yelp
I opened this store! Seriously. I was the first barista to work here. It's the best Peets ever. There are no words for the magic in this tiny spot. I love you Peets E. Street.
google avatar

Linh H.

Yelp
This Peet's location has a nice interior, much better than the one in North Davis. I especially like how this one has a real bathroom inside as opposed to the other location. The service here is either a hit or miss. They remade me a drink after I had walked out the door and the handle had knocked my drink to the floor. Another time, they ignored my request for a cup or ice water even though I had purchased a large drink costing over $4. Eh, whatever, their delicious coffee will have me coming back regardless. I wish they offered refills on iced/hot brewed coffee like Starbucks does. But their signature blends are amazing! Especially the Blend 101, Garuda, and Major Dickason's! Great place to study as well, but most of the time it is already filled with students huddling over their laptops there already.
google avatar

Lucy D.

Yelp
It's one of the more spacious Peet's coffee places I've seen so far, but the service lacks. Pros: Convenience: Its located within downtown Davis next to many other great eateries and small local boutiques shops. Spacious: There's plenty of seating indoor and outdoor, so its a pretty nice place to kick it or study. Be warned that seating tends to fill up fast. Cons: Service: My family made four different drink orders and they messed on three. Even after we told them, they still made our drinks wrong. And plus the my drink order took over 20 minutes, not so great. Overall, its an okay place if you need a quick coffee fix.
google avatar

Wendy G.

Yelp
I stop by Peet's on my way to school 3-4 times a week. I usually love it. It's a great way to start the morning because the staff is the best, they make you feel so welcomed and give you personal attention. The coffee is also much better than the competition and can actually keep me away through a 2 hr lecture at 9am. Love the baked goods, esp. the muffins. I avoid studying here at all costs because it's super busy, outlets are hard to find, and the tables are too tiny for books. It's a better place just to go hang with friends. Normally would have given this place 5 stars, but... I was compelled to write about the unusually negative experience I've been having with one of the cashiers, not sure if he's new or he just started doing morning shifts. My god, what a smug arrogant douche. I don't know if he hates his job or hates dealing with people, but what is up with the attitude!? One time, I ordered a medium roast coffee. I guess they were out at the moment and he asked me if I wanted medium or dark, I said medium again and that I was willing to wait. He asked me in such a condescending tone of voice if I "even knew the difference." Sorry if I'm not enough of a coffee snob. This morning was particularly bad, I went in with a dollar off offer that you get when you check in on yelp during the promotional period. You get it EVERY single time you check in. But he made me feel like I was cheating the system by using the same coupon over and over. Uhh no, I'm cheap but not that cheap. Then he gives me the wrong receipt where the total was way more than I ordered. I went back in line, waited and politely asked him if he overcharged my card. He made me feel like such an idiot, as if I was making a big deal out of nothing and I was stupid for even asking. When he gave me the correct receipt, I noticed he did not give me the discount. I asked him again, no apologies or anything, handed me a coupon for complimentary small coffee, THANKS but perhaps a quick "sorry about that" would have been more appreciated. I think I will be avoiding this Peet's for a while and take my business to Cloud Forest or Mishka's.

Yelp
Where are you getting your coffee? It's a simple question. Where are you getting your coffee in this world? Coffee is becoming more and more and more of a factor in everybody's world. everybody's world. I'd like to direct you to a new client we have in Davis named Peet's Coffee. Peet's Coffee is an absolutely fantastic way of getting your coffee in this world. Peet's Coffee allows you to choose the coffee you want. Choose the coffee you want to deliver your caffeine. Peet's Coffee gives you fantastic choices in the coffee area and its up to you to simply look at the menu and determine which one is best for you. Peet's Coffee you will hear a lot more about in the coming days. Peet's Coffee is a way to save you money. Peet's Coffee is the way of the future enabling you to choose the coffee you want. The coffee that works best for you. the ones that saves the most coffee money. Peet's Coffee

Yelp
I love Peets. One of my favorite "major coffee" chains. They have good coffee, good tea, and great customer service. Like any coffee for me, I only order cold coffee and tea drinks...so I can't vouch for the hot item drinks. They're pretty consistent in making their drinks. I notice that with another coffee chain, whose will go unnamed but their initials are *tar*ucks, that the coffee drinks can vary quite a bit depending on who makes it and what day it is...not with Peets. I know if I go in and order an iced lowfat mocha, it's going to taste the same every time unless I change it up. I like that. Consistency. Hard to find a seat in this Peets. Especially if you're going to bring your laptop. Seems like there are only a few places in downtown Davis that offer free wifi...so Davisites seem to camp out once they get a place. If I could have, I would have given this place 3.5 stars just because of this fact. During the summer, this is one of the best places to stay cool.

Yelp
Reasons WHY I should go to Peets more often: 1) Plenty of seating at this location 2) Baristas don't talk as loud as in one Sbux location 3) Better tasting ice teas ( Matcha green teas aren't overy sweet, clumpy, or artificial tasting like Sbux & I really like their Berry Pomegranate Tea Cooler) 4) Beautiful, thick foam on my cappuccinos and lattes, even if they're iced! A few reasons why I don't go to Peet's as often as Sbux: 1) Location 2) No rewards/discount program like with Sbux gold card (although if you do sign up for the Peets email list serve you get coupons once in awhile and if you check in via Yelp you might get a discount on a drink)
