My mother had to be moved into a memory care facility because of Alzheimer's/Dementia. Thankfully, I know an employee who works there and they told me they had space available now for her and no waiting lists.
Denise Kelley, the marketing director took us on a tour of the Memory Care area. There are only 14 pts max in that section so the nurse to patient ratio is wonderful! During the tour, the staff introduced themselves to us and we were able to observe activities that the staff do with the residents to help their memory and also doing chair exercising. We reserved a studio apartment for my mom as I wanted to visit other locations over a few weeks to make sure there wasn't anything better out there. There was no comparison with the 6 other facilities that I went to check out. Denise walked us through the process of what steps need to be taken and made it very easy on me to start this process.
Nicole Williams, the finance director, walked me through all the paperwork to fill out and is helping me with the long term care insurance company to start the claim process for my mother's care. She is very knowledgeable and helpful with the many questions I had with this huge change in my families life.
When my mother moved in, Maria Freeman, the nurse manager, walked my sister and I through the process of how our mom's medication would be delivered and the primary care doctor they have on staff and APRN. She was very friendly and explained how everything works in layman terms with insurance, medicare costs, etc. Thankfully, my mother isn't on many medications at all. The primary care doctor and APRN also reached out to introduce themselves to my sister and I and we were able to fill in the gaps from the paperwork we submitted with them.
The nursing staff has been wonderful since my mother moved in. When they see me arrive, they know me by name and give me updates on how mom is doing. Kendra, LaKeisha and Helen have been so kind and gentle with my mom since she is so confused. They are patient with her and encourage her in many ways.
The food at the facility is top notch! Mom is cleaning her plate at every meal! The activities they have for the memory care residents are stimulating and engaging. The activities director's name escapes me at the moment, but she makes sure all residents are included if they want to be and always has a smile on her face.
I even met Joey, their Maintenance Director. He loves the work he does and has been there for several years. He was very responsive with a few things that needed attending to with my mom's room when asked.
The PT and OT staff have contacted me and want to work with mom on some memory skills and walking abilities as she isn't used to this much walking exercise coming from a small home.
I cannot thank the staff at Glenwood/Pegasus Landing for making this transition seamless for me and my family. I can tell a huge difference in how my mom is acting and now able to socialize with people who have the same condition she does. She is thriving there as I hoped she would! I cannot wait to see how much more she changes in the upcoming weeks and months after she has gotten used to the routine.
