South Bend’s Best Restaurants for a Great Meal | Eater Chicago

"Locals, visitors, and star Notre Dame athletes frequent this popular breakfast nook. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers options like banana French toast and omelets, and less common dishes like chicken and waffles, and an Irish benedict, which comes with corned beef and hashbrowns. Would you prefer a boozy breakfast? Peggs also serves mimosas, screwdrivers, spiked coffee concoctions, and specialty bloody marys like a bloody BLT." - Drew Mentock

Google
Came here 3 times for breakfast during a game day weekend and boy they didn't disappoint at all. Service was fast despite the rush of people and the food was excellent. I had the gluten free pancakes and an omelette (on separate days of course because they were very filling). The staff was kind and knowledgable, going above and beyond to accommodate for food allergies.

Google
The food was fantastic! The service was even better. Brea is an amazing server and made the experience very enjoyable. This is my first time in Indiana but if I ever come back, I’ll definitely be stopping by again!

Google
This place was so cute. I had their breakfast tacos and they were absolutely delicious. And their hashbrowns were amazing. Nothing like I ever tasted before, but you have to get them loaded.

Google
Great breakfast loves the breakfast tacos. They weren't spicy they do have Tabasco but they were egg and chorizo and green onions. Wife got bacon and avocado omelet

Google
I recently had the pleasure of having brunch here and was thoroughly impressed with the experience. The food was outstanding; I ordered the chicken and waffles, which were absolutely delicious. The service was equally remarkable. Our server, Kaitlyn, made us feel right at home, treating us as if we were locals. She even complimented our order, affirming that we made excellent choices. I would happily return here for breakfast anytime. Highly recommended! See more pictures in my insta @Foodysacram

Google
A great looking spot with friendly staff for a completely adequate breakfast. The place was busy on a Sunday, but not crowded. We had no wait and our service was prompt and attentive. Unfortunately, the pancakes were flavorless, the eggs were mild and safe, hash browns were ok, and the $9.25 glass of orange juice was the only thing that had flavor (and odd flavor, to boot). We did get a laugh at the gratuity suggestions on the bill (percentages are an absolute, and never need adjusting, as they are variable based on the full amount of the bill - inflation is built in).

Google
Great spot for breakfast. Quality food. Awesome specialty morning drinks. Roomy inside with some outdoor seating as well. I had the Maple Morning Delight coffee and it was excellent.

Google
Very nice place! Food, space and staff were all amazing. Pegg personally sat us and she was great to talk to. She runs a great operation and is focused on her customers.

Yelp
Great food, friendly staff, and bottomless cups of coffee. What else can you ask for? I always return when I visit South Bend.

Yelp
Food is marginal. The hostess is nothing short of HATEFUL. Fun (and stupid!) Fact: they don't allow parties larger than 2 to sit at the bar. wtf

Yelp
The wait staff are always really good here, but unfortunately the food isn't. Eggs benedict should be poached. Eggs should be cooked right if the whole business is based on eggs. My benny was wrong twice. Eggs whites were clear and snotty the first time, white and snotty the second time. Both times not poached. ?? Here's the Picture. Hollandaise was terrible. I mean wall paper paste terrible. All of this took way too long. The last thing to mention is that the wait was like 25 minutes after she said 15, and my husband and I stood there with an obvious injured knee (cane and wrapped knee, terrible limp) and no one in the waiting room offered the seat they, or their children, were sitting in. Not a single person, until we left, had the courtesy to offer. After a mother/sister/children group got seated, I was finally able to rest my knee for the last 3 minutes of our wait. That group, who ended up seated next to us, was (2 totally able bodied women with several 8-12yr old kids) rude and entitled people, every one of them, almost like the scene from those unbelievable Instagram videos where you think, 'Surely this can't be real...' but then it unfolds in front of you. Yeah. Not yet fault of the restaurant, but still an unavoidable reflection of the experience. My husband said, "Sorry I brought you there, Babe. It's gotten worse and worse the last few times. That wasn't pleasant at all. We won't be coming back." I'm okay with this. I didn't even talk about his food. After sending mine back twice, it's your own risk. I hope it's good for you and ours was just a freak occurrence....

Yelp
First time in South bend! Ended up going to Peggs. It was really delicious. They have outdoor seating and since it was a nice day, we sat outside. The serving size is large for the price. I loved the eggs Benedict. The sauce was very good and not overly salty. Our server was really nice and we were quickly served. I definitely recommend checking it out for breakfast/brunch!

Yelp
We arrived on a busy Saturday morning, but we were seated within 10 minutes. I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy combo. The biscuits were average, and the gravy was just okay. The Bloody Mary was good, but it was very weak. Overall, it was a good experience, and I'll be back to try something else.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
Busy on a Saturday but fun, lively and bright vibe. We waited about 20 minutes for our table of six and while the service wasn't bad, it really wasn't good either. Food was mediocre. We got a cinnamon roll, yogurt and granola, breakfast tacos in a burrito, and the Fred's home plate. Definitely better food choices in south bend but this was convenient and fun.
google avatar

Yelp
A South Bend staple l for delicious brunch!! The service is friendly and the food is delicious! Lots of classic brunch options and seasonal specials, as well as mimosas and more. They don't take reservations but do offer call ahead. On a Sunday after a home game, we got there right around 9 and didn't have to wait and it started getting more crowded shortly after.

Yelp
My daughters and I stopped in for brunch a couple months ago. The atmosphere is friendly, it has a definite downtown cafe feel. We were greeted and seated very quickly! It was pretty busy during our visit. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. She suggested the breakfast tacos ( I wish I had taken a picture), as her personal favorite. We ordered: Breakfast tacos- Holy cow! It had chorizo and eggs and lots of other good stuff in corn tortillas, very very good! 10/10 Banana's foster French toast- this was a special limited time item. I was in absolute heaven! The bananas cooked perfectly with heavenly caramelized butter with cinnamon infusion. The French toast was cooked perfectly. 10/10 Chicken tenders- huge portion of juicy tender chicken that my daughter ordered with fresh fruit. She loved it! 9/10 for the fruit being very unripe, but not a dealbreaker! Little one had a scrambled egg and waffle fries ( I know, she is my picky one lol). She says the egg was delicious! I tried her waffle fries and give them a 7/10, cooked well and came to use hot and crispy. Not overly flavorful. Coffee and sodas were perfect and refilled without a delay. Pricing is average for the area and portions are very good. I will definitely be back for more delicious food and fun with my family at PEGGS.

Yelp
Came here for a business breakfast. Everything was delicious. I did order my hash browns well done and they couldn't been a bit more crispy, but it's fine. I had an omelet and it was amazing. I work across the street at the hotel, so it's great to know that there are great breakfast places in town to refer our guests too if our restaurant is too busy. I just always love a local gem and Pegg herself came over to our table to say hello. Yay for small businesses thriving! I definitely plan on going back for lunch!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I had breakfast there today, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon which tasty and cooked perfectly as well as hash browns, English muffin fresh OJ and espresso. All above average. Service great! The place is nice not that fancy but clean and fine. Location is perfect for downtown.

Yelp
Average American breakfast with friendly service. Our waitress was super nice and we appreciated how there was free coffee for customers waiting for a table. I had the Prime Rib Wrap and find the portions a bit lacking. The wrap was flat with only a few slices of meat inside. It was also nothing special flavor-wise. They might be more reliable for their sweet options, considering their famous cinnamon roll, which I did not get a chance to try. It's a classic spot to visit in DTSB, although I wouldn't call it a must-go (maybe the cinnamon roll would change my mind).

Yelp
This is an adorable little brunch place. Eating here just has a very comforting and homey feeling. They're definitely known for their egg dishes and unique coffee brew (I can't remember the name, but it has a nutty taste and is very delicious). Get their breakfast tacos!
google avatar

Adam G.

Yelp
Good portions, great food and kind service. All you can ask for in a breakfast/brunch spot.

John F.

Yelp
Great omlettes and a nice variety of other choices. Friendly service. Outdoor seating options.

Yelp
Dined here with my husband for the first time and the experience was a real treat - said no one ever. I had chicken and waffles, which sounds way better than it tasted. The chicken was like eating a piece of leather, all dry and crispy, and the waffles, well, let's just say they would have been better with some butter, but nope, that wasn't happening. My husband's French toast was something our 11-year-old son could have whipped up in his sleep, and don't even get me started on the turkey sausage - it was like someone poured a bottle of weird all over it. The only redeeming quality was our waitress, who was nice, but even she couldn't save this disaster. All in all, I'd have to say I won't be back, and if you value your taste buds, you won't either. Three stars because we ate our food and were hungry.

Alexis K.

Yelp
Atmosphere is so cute, and the staff is friendly. I got the salmon benedict and thought the salmon had no flavor. The rest of the food was good.
google avatar

Yelp
Great brunch, breakfast cocktails. I love the old school diner type of vibe they have have here!
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Always such good food! The staff is wonderful! Upbeat whenever we come in. Whenever we've had to wait for a to go order, they've made sure to offer us a drink while we wait. So nice and accommodating! If you're looking for a friendly place with good homemade food, this is where to go!

Yelp
Another great breakfast at PEEGS. Visited here some years ago at the last ND v. UofM Game with buddies. Going to ND Tour with family so I brought them here. Their game is still high. Our server was old school incredibly efficient. And I'm embarrassed to say I forgot her name. This really upsets me because when you recognize great service it comes to mind how it's changed over the years. Anyway, the food. Tasty, hot and correct. Coffee is perfect. Medium or Dark Roast choices.

Yelp
Nice cozy place. Good tacos. Service was good. Great place to go for lunch. Prices were ok too
google avatar

Yelp
We went twice while we were in town. Great gluten free options. Very knowledgeable about gluten allergies and the food was delicious. Fantastic service both times.
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
We had a last minute large party and they were amazing to work with! They accommodated our group, the service was fast and accurate, and the food was delicious.

Paul C.

Yelp
Delicious food only topped by the stellar service. Make sure you add this to your South Bend itinerary.
google avatar

Tracie L.

Yelp
Food was very mediocre. Haven't been there in a long time, but it used to be good. Had the avocado toast and it was super bland. Everyone else in my party said their food was just ok (pancakes, etc). Too bad, Pegg's has been a South Bend staple for a long time. Server was nice.
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
One the best breakfasts I've ever had. The mimosas are great as well. The wait staff is thorough and kind. Very busy and loud spot but so worth it in south bend!

Jim S.

Yelp
Food is average, team is awesome. Parking is frustrating for all the eateries. Wish it was in a better location. Not sure why you have to have a certain amount of characters to post oh well.
google avatar

Billie K.

Yelp
This place doesn't look like much from the outside. The wait staff was very attentive. They were hustling to get everyone taken care of. We went on a Saturday around 1:30P and had no wait. It's typical to wait an hour to get a seat at this restaurant. The fruit was really fresh! I would've like a little more seasoning on the tacos as they were a little bland. Maybe fresh cilantro? Overall good was good. Known for their all day breakfast menu! Check them out if you're ever in South Bend, IN.

Yelp
We reserved a private room at Pegg's for a family meal to celebrate my mom's birthday! The food and service was wonderful! The staff at Pegg's have hospitality dialed in! Thank you!
google avatar

Fannie H.

Yelp
What a great find for our first time in South Bend! This location is right downtown and serves up delicious food and cold pressed juices! I started with a juice and had a little food and ended with bottomless mimosas and bloody's for the win!

Jimmy K.

Yelp
Disappointed with food scallions on biscuits and gravy ?? Weird!! Also eggs were overcooked

Jeffrey F.

Yelp
Pegg's is wonderful she runs a tight ship. Food is great staff is wonderful my favorite spot for breakfast.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
At there for brunch, had our two dogs with is, ate outside and they had two water bowls in place when we sat down. Oh and the food was good, thanks!!
google avatar

Chelsea H.

Yelp
Brunch today was perfect! For real, there's not one thing I'd change. I'm on crutches and they put us at a corner table in a sensible area, without us even having to ask. (It's the little things like this that make such an impact on an experience.) Aside from that, we had some of the best service we have ever had as a family!! Kaitlyn took great care of us. She was so friendly and attentive, on top of everything, and super knowledgeable about the menu and my gluten free options. The food was delicious! GF pancakes topped with bananas foster & their house bacon stick out as highlights. No pics because we were too hungry, but trust me when I say the food looked as good as it tasted!

Samantha M.

Yelp
The service was exceptional! On a busy Saturday morning, our server was able to make sure we were well taken care of and didn't rush us out either! The food was fantastic and the atmosphere was most inviting! Fantastic experience, would recommend and will be back!

Christina B.

Yelp
Food & service are always the best! Favorite breakfast spot in South Bend. Definitely recommend this to any out of towners.

T G.

Yelp
Had heard good things from friends, so we stopped in our trip. Fantastic! I wish we had a place like this near us in CA...Lots of savory breakfast dishes, but great lunch items too. And good portions for reasonable prices Peg (the owner) was friendly sweet all the other employees. Definitely will be back next time in town.

Colleen D.

Yelp
Usually the food is good. Today I visited and had salmon Benedict - the salmon was really fishy and lacked the sense of having intentional quality. Also was busy and server worked hard but forgot to order juice and was backed up. Wait was really long today, which can be expected on a Sunday.
google avatar

Jaime S.

Yelp
Friendly staff, great food, good atmosphere! I also just had to get one of their hats!
google avatar

Addison H.

Yelp
The service was great and I had the B&Gand it was great. I have to say this was some of the B& G in South Bend area.
google avatar

Norm C.

Yelp
This is a true South Bend gem. We had bruch here and go figure Pegg actually was the one who took care of our crew. We had 12 and they found room for us on a busy day. Once we were seated the staff took so great care of us. We lacked for nothing and they were so friendly. The food was great. I had an omelette and fruit and it was awesome. I could drone on but this is a place you should make sure to visit. It's a great small business that knows how to treat customers like royalty.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Solid choice for breakfast. Coffee was just average so might want to find a Starbucks. Otherwise great family spot. Easy to grab breakfast and go. Quick service. In and out in 30 min if you wish.
google avatar

Andrea G.

Yelp
Let me start out by saying that the people are SO friendly. The location is great too, with nice outdoor seating which is hard to come by in south bend. The food however was just average, if not even a little dry and under seasoned. O The prices were good, and I was especially impressed with the kids menu! Lots of options, good portions, for a great price.
google avatar

Clarissa F.

Yelp
The food is amazing, service is even better and the owner is such a great person. All around this is the best place in town.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
What a horribly ran restaurant. No communication with customers. We came in with 10 people and were given the run around about ordering. We waited 40 minutes and still had not gotten our order taken Not even a manager could come over and let us know what was going on. Needless to say, our entire party got up and left, and we wont be back
google avatar

Michele G.

Yelp
I'm "awarding" 5 stars cause of Nicole and Katie who were the perfect, welcoming hosts and servers. I had avocado toast and though the avocado spread had oxidized (turned brown) it was delicious with 2 PERFECT sunny side up eggs. Very tasty. Someone else got the black and blue salad and reported that it was very, very good. The only miss was the omelette and hashed (not) browned potatoes.
google avatar

E M.

Yelp
Great breakfast restaurant for good, home cooking food. Chicken and waffles were great with fantastic presentation. Coffee was great! Service friendly and at a good pace. Definitely will return next time in town!
google avatar

Mackenzie M.

Yelp
My family walked into a warm and buzzing atmosphere and was greeted happily by one of the owners and several staff. And the food was spectacular. I had the platter while my sister had the tacos. She let me try a bite and I ended up eating half the taco. So good! Definitely recommend if you need a little spice in your morning meal. Check out this gem in South Bend
google avatar

George G.

Yelp
This is a great local diner type restaurant for breakfast and lunch. It's a very casual place. There can be a long wait because it's good, but it tends to move pretty fast. It's very clean as far as I can see and all the staff are very polite and helpful. They do some solid Benedict's and have fresh squeezed orange juice so I'm always happy. One of my kids loves the kids cheesy macaroni which is like a penne smothered in cheese sauce, it's fire. Have been several times now with large and small groups and haven't had a single complaint about anything.
