The 12 Best Things to Do in Bonaire (Dutch Caribbean) - AFAR
"The Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary is one of only four areas in the world where flamingos breed. It is located near the Cargill solar salt facility." - Kristin Braswell
The austere landscape of Bonaire is part of the experience-very flat and a 1-1/2 lane wide narrow road in the trek-a higher clearance vehicle to pull off and on the road is advised. Stopped to see the slave salt houses and light house on the way-and rough coral beach with stacked rocks that looked like old grave markers-not much history signage to explain but was unique to see. The overt salt piles from salt mining of Cargill on the way dominates the landscape. Cargill owns most the land on this end so lots of no trespass signs- saw several flamingoes in their evaporation ponds from a distance, and got lucky to see a few of them take flight, but unfortunately no access to explore or walk in to get closer to them.

Definitely lots of flamingos here although not really where google maps tells you to go. Drive a little further (like closer to the lighthouse) to actually see them. Be aware that you cannot get very close to them. If you want to get closer, there's a flamingo viewing area in the north of the island near Rincon and 1,000 steps. There's less birds up there but you can get closer. Still worth a stop if you have some time and you're in the area (pretty close to the salt pier and the lighthouse)

The day was cloudy and we didn't see many flamingos, but I still enjoyed the experience. It's a beautiful place.

you cannot walk inside the sanctuary, but you can see plenty from afar without a problem
if you are lucky you can even spot the giant flocks of flamingos
truly something else!
best to check it out with a carting golf, low speed, open side to check out the views and also hear the waves

Its a protected area and you might see them from far, still a great place with a lot of nature

Hundreds of beautiful birds. You may need to drive more to find them. When we visited, they were near the lighthouse.

Always nice to see flamingos in their natural habitat. They are spreader over a larger area, so you will not see them all at once. Unfortunately you are not able to approach them, so you have to look at them from a distance. Would still recommend to stop here on your way to the Bonaire tower.

Flamingo are far away from the road most of the time and you are not allowed to come closer, so bring binoculars if you can.
