Where to Eat Pozole in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Born as a modest underground operation in the Macedo family living room, this Archer Heights pozole destination is always busy. The green, white, and red Guerrero-style pozole — available by the plate or by the gallon — follows traditional cooking techniques, including the use of slaked lime to cook the corn, which gives the hominy a soft and chewy consistency. Served with generous portions of avocado, pork rinds, radishes, cabbage, and oregano, the meal is topped with pulled meat, with the perfect consistency to enjoy with the broth. Prompt service and warm hospitality are even more impressive when you learn that the owner is only 19. Other regional offerings include pigs’ feet (by themselves or on tostadas)." - Brenda Storch

Came on a Saturday evening around 8pm. The restaurant reached max capacity very quickly! We ordered the flight of posole which came with three soups: red, white, green posole for $20. We ordered two flights so it was 6 bowls total. It also came with cabbage, radish, onion, lime, avocado, tostadas. Highly recommend everything was delicious! White posole was not spicy and a tad bit salty, the green was the spiciest and the red had a smokey flavor and less spicy than the green. Overall, my fav was the red posole and my bestie was the red as well. We ordered a large horchata for less than $5! And I really enjoyed that it wasn't overly sweet like some restaurants make their horchata, this one was perfect and you could taste the cinnamon and the rice! I would have given five stars but the pozole flight did not come out piping hot it was semi warm. If it would have been really hot like it just came off the stove I would have given it five stars but for some reason it was just warm almost like it had been sitting out for a while. I'm assuming they probably don't want to overcook the meat so they probably don't have it cooking for a continuous amount of time which is probably why it wasn't piping hot. Overall I think it's an absolute great value! The bowls are a decent size. Instead of getting two flights we should have just got one flight and that would have been enough for me and my bestie to share. We had leftovers since we ordered two flights! But one flight is definitely enough for a couple or two people. The total cost came out to $49 for two flights of posole which included six bowls of soup and one large horchata. I will be returning and trying their other dishes. Parking available in front but it gets packed easily.

Google
This was my first time here. We came here on a Monday afternoon. And what i loved was no wait !! We were able to be seated quickly and was able to order even quicker. Our food came not that long after! We ordered the pazole flight. And a order of flautas. As the pictures show the pazole flight offers you all three types of Pazole with all the fixings. It was good!! The only thing I wish they had was something to keep the soups warm as you enjoy the soups. (The soup got cold quick). But... all in all it was still good!!! As well as the flautas. So would I go back? Yes!! If you like pazole give them a try!!

Google
Pekes Pozole is hands down one of the best places to enjoy authentic Mexican pozole. The broth is rich and flavorful, with just the right balance of spices, and the meat is tender and cooked perfectly. Every bite feels comforting and satisfying. The restaurant has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff are genuinely kind and attentive, which makes the whole experience enjoyable. Portions here are generous — one bowl is enough to fill you up. Parking can be a bit limited, so it’s good to arrive a little early to find a spot. If you’ve never tried pozole before, this place is a great introduction. It’s definitely worth the visit, whether you’re new to pozole or a longtime fan.

Google
“Peke’s Pozole is comfort in a bowl — authentic, rich, and unforgettable.” From the first spoonful, you know this is the real deal. The broth is deep, flavorful, and soul-warming, the kind that feels like it’s been simmering with love for hours. Every bite of hominy, tender meat, and fresh toppings balances perfectly — it’s not just food, it’s tradition served hot. The vibe here matches the dish: authentic, welcoming, and True. Authentic. Original. If you’ve never had pozole done right, this is the place that will set the standard forever. One bowl = One masterpiece. #TrueAuthenticOriginal #YeahYeahYeahDoIt #PozoleLove #OneChicagoMasterpiece #PekesPozole

Google
Simplemente delicioso 😋 Tenía tantas ganas de un buen pozole y aquí lo vine a encontrar 🙌🏼 We started with a fresh Maracuya margarita and some taquitos 🌮 Omg then the pozole came 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 sooooo flavorful. If you’re craving pozole, let me tell you that this is THE PLACE, the flavor is so delicious on green and red pozole. We also order drinks and they were so good. The service was on point and always asking if we needed anything and making sure we were doing ok, I liked that the servers were always very active with customers and keep the place organized. Thank you guys for the pozole, definitely will come back and Definitely i highly recommend pekes pozole💙🇲🇽

Google
This pozole is my favorite in all of Chicago! Any time I am getting together with my family and want to cater food this spot is my go to. The pozole is always fresh and packed with favor and you will get plenty of meat! You also get all of the fixings to top off your pozole and some tostadas. I have also dined in and had their chilaquiles which are also amazing!!! These are the chilaquiles that stay crunchy when you get them which I absolutely love.

Google
Very tasty pozole with generous portion of cabbage, radishes, avocado, tostadas and more. Very clean place top to bottom and attentive service as well. Got the pozole flight and was a great value in addition to very fresh and a generous portion.

Google
We've been here before and returned this time to treat our Venezuelan friend, who thoroughly enjoyed the white pozole. Personally, I think the green pozole is the standout. The flautas are a must-try with the pozole, and we also had the huaraches with cecina and quesabirria with stew - all were amazing. For a sampling of all the flavors, the pozole flight is a great option. Highly recommended. Although the wait time was quite long, likely due to our party of 10, the food made it well worth it

Yelp
I visited this place on Sunday morning and was packed at a waiting time for 20 minutes but it was totally worth I ordered picaditas , michelada $14, and a tequila shot included And mediam white pozole really good Artiva Guerrero cochos Soo goid come whit the friends or family

Yelp
We decided to go for Pozole for our 27th anniversary and it was the right decision The best tip I can give you is to go during the week on weekends the wait for a table can be 2 hrs The Pozole Flight is Green , White, and Red Pozle, just like the colors of the Mexican Flag Plus, all the fixing to hook it up Limes, Cabbage, Red onion, Radish, Avocado, and Tostadas (whole fried tortillas). Also, don't forget to add the dried oregano The service was great and very informative we will be going back soon The Green Verde Pozole was my favorite it has a slight kick, but the flavor had my tongue dancing it might have been doing a salsa dance. But you can't go wrong with any of them The White is a chicken broth very light but crisp and tasty The Red Rojo is the hottest but not too hot for my tastes

Yelp
Look no further than Peke's Pozole for the best Pozole in Chicago. Their Pozole is the gold standard. Everything we ordered was spot on delicious which I personally find rare when eating out. We arrived Saturday during prime lunch hour. Although busy, we were greeted and seated within minutes sans reservation. Service was swift and food came out at a good pace. Pricing is easy on the pocket which is always a plus. Street side parking seems to be the only option. A challenge for sure in a busy urban location but luckily a free space opened up steps away from the restaurant. Come with an appetite. The portions are hearty and there's plenty to take home afterwards.

Yelp
I don't have any pictures but this pozole was delicious!!! I've been craving pozole since my trip to Mexico in October and I finally found one that was just as good. I ordered over the phone and they were polite and very fast. I asked what size is good for two people and suggested half a gallon. When I got home I believe it could feed 4 people during lunch. I got the red pork pozole with light hominy. It was very tasty.

Laura V.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! Great service !! Great food!! Great drinks !! Came with my family everyone had a different dish everything was sooooo good definitely recommend !!

Jess R.

Yelp
It's hard to get good Pozole if it isn't cooked at home. Most places take short cuts or use inferior ingredients, but Peke's does it right. Even with all the fixings you need included! Service is excellent and store is clean. Everything else was great too. Salsas are spicy, no short cuts are taken. It gets busy so you might want to make reservations or just order pickup. Take some Pozole to go, it reheats great too!

Jonathan C.

Yelp
I came back I told you I'd come back the food was busting even my sisters were mewing and I loved the skibidy slicers

Yelp
I live in the suburbs and someone who lives in the area brought me a red and green pozole, and I think that it is the best I've ever tasted. The actual, how many is not the canned one it is the one that sprouts open and is submerged in flavorful broth so that every bite you take you get that t flavor! In my opinion, the green one while incredibly flavorful, was a bit earlier than I expected, and definitely more spicy than the red one but not by much just a little kick I don't like spicy, so if I'm able to eat both of them it really isn't that spicy. The red one is serious flavor. It's amazing it comes with all of the fixings chopped red onion, avocado, sliced, radishes, tostada oregano I don't know what else I mean everything. I will definitely order from here again 110%. I have no photos because it was so good. I didn't even think about taking pictures.!

Mel S.

Yelp
What's sad is that the pozole rojo is phenomenal but the behavior of the owner is not. One of the owner's waitresses fell down the stairs and we watched him not even choose to help her up. She was covered in food and he didn't offer anything. What he did do was call her names that I'd rather not say but to preface he said, she'll be fine. She's a _________. It was disgusting to see and hear. Thankfully, a patron helped her up and checked to make sure she didn't really hurt herself. We will never return!

Yelp
This spot is A+, the pozole comes with tostadas, onions, cabbage, radishes, limes, and avocado and is perfectly tasty. The service is quick, everyone is very friendly, and the music is so good! They're opening up a new place a couple stores down so I'm excited for when they transition to the new place and I'm sure it will keep the same great flavor!

Yelp
Friendly and polite. Food came fast and was fresh. Waitress was professional. Pekes Pozole

Yelp
The 3 options of pozole are white, green, and red. They have medium and large. The medium was big! I left half of it. The pozole was bomb!!! They serve it with shredded cabbage, sliced radishes, chopped onion, lime, and half an avocado. We ordered the chicharrón to add to the pozole as week. We the picaditas with vecina on side. Those come with pepitas which were yummy too! They offer a Guerrero known drink Yoli which my friend loves. Yelp isn't allowing me to upload the videos I have of the pozole my bad.

E S.

Yelp
Delicious, we got there exactly when it opened and had a party of 9. We were seated right away. Good pozole. Seating was full by the time we left!
google avatar

Veronica M.

Yelp
Love it! The picaditas were my favorite, I had one of each, salsa verde, salsa roja, salsa molcajete finger licking good. Pozole is authentic I give it 3 stars. However overall authentic and fast service. I will definitely be back. Value and quality is was fantastic! They will be opening a new place next door hopefully the wait will not be as long. It was an hour wait.

Yelp
I would like to talk about the food first. I had the pozole flight meal and it comes with three types of pozole. You get the red, white and green pozole. Portions are just perfect to be able to try all three pozoles given. The taste of all three pozoles were delicious! I definitely recommend especially on a rainy or cold day. The service of this restaurant could be better the waitress that attended us was kind of MIA during our dine in. We kept trying to call someone for napkins but everyone was a bit busy. Ambiance of the restaurant is very small especially the downstairs part of the restaurant. Owner needs to fix the heater as the restaurant gets cold as people come in and out. Seating is very tight and needs improvement for better flow and comfort. Overall food is good and I was full and happy. I will be coming back for a second try. Keep up the good work and improve

Yelp
Great pozole one of the best I had an the tacos are good too I recommend this place you regret it

Yelp
Excellent service and their green pozole was just incredibly delicious! I love my pozole spicy, but this one is just the right amount of heat. I highly recommend this restaurant. The vibe is friendly and laid back.

Ruth G.

Yelp
Great food and service as I read about Peke's. The tortillas are fresh as are all the menu items. My son went for the pollo en mole but I couldn't decide so the flight was in order. The leftovers tasted even better later that night.

Im A Y.

Yelp
I drove a distance to try the pozole & was so excited to try it, as pozole is if not one of my favorite dishes growing up. But what a disappointment, I just don't get the rave. I either went on a bad day or the pozole is just too plain. It tasted watered down & flavorless. With a tiny portion of pulled meat. I didn't finish it, because I no longer desire it after that initial taste. Also, Our table was sticky!! Just over all bad experience. Because of that I would not recommend & definitely not going back.

J G.

Yelp
Como de las mejores cenadurias de Mexico. Lo único que faltaba es que el pozole fuera más caliente. Aun, bien rico.

Ana V.

Yelp
I drove over 25 miles to eat here last Sunday. Wait was 1.5 hours and was told to wait outside or in my vehicle. When I told the gentleman I was going to order to go instead, he told me, "we don't have pozole to go, only for dine-in!" And it was not just what he said, but how he said it. Fortunately, I was able to have some delicious, if not better, pozole a few blocks down. I know restaurant next door loves Peke's Pozole! I kept seeing hungry families entering there to enjoy their Sunday meal! *edit to respond Jonathan M. You officially opened Peke's Pozole in 2018 and have been in business 5+ years. If you ran out of pozole on a Sunday afternoon around 1PM, you need better management.
google avatar

Jr. K.

Yelp
I don't know how good the food is the only thing I know is that you got a wait a long time organization of this little place is not good at all
google avatar

Nikki K.

Yelp
Best pozole I've ever had!! The green is my favorite. My fiancé always gets the red and we always have leftovers. When we eat the leftovers at home we mix the two and it's sooo good!!

Araceli A.

Yelp
Terrible servicio!!!

Benedict B.

Yelp
Just great pozole, you want some pozole you should come here. Also surprised that the chips were freshly fried, so that was nice. Staff was also very kind and dealt with the craziness of Independence Day celebrations outside very well.
google avatar

Danny G.

Yelp
This is by far the best posole I have had in Chicago. Everything seems to be very well-made. I am a vegetarian, so I just ordered it without meat which is extremely delicious to me never disappoints the parking is difficult because there is no parking lot and the space is kind of small so on the weekend you might have to wait, but definitely worth waiting for.

Robert B.

Yelp
Pozole was delicious. Generous portions. Service was exceptional. Well ran establishment.

Dana M.

Yelp
Really good pozole and an amazing staff! It was cumbia night today as they were playing all the best cumbia hits. Beautiful restaurant and really authentic Mexican food! Definitely will be back soon!!!
google avatar

Sandra G.

Yelp
I love the picaditas with cecina! also loved the café olla and pozole rojo with tostadas it's so delicious I will be back next time that I am in town!
google avatar

Iris Q.

Yelp
I rarely order pozole at restaurants because it's hard to beat my mom and grandma's red & green pozoles. I ordered a large green bowl of pozole and was completely blown away by the spices and flavor. I was very impressed with how attentive all staff was the whole time. I didn't think I would finish the large bowl but I seriously couldn't stop eating until it was gone. #foodbaby I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the maíz and amount of pork in my bowl. My dad is very picky with Menudo & is always on the hunt for a good bowl. He mentioned making this his new weekend spot... I'm right there with him. I've tried agua de jamaica at every Mexican restaurant I've been to & theirs is by far my favorite. Their lease for this location ends on 6/28/21, so be on the lookout for new location information on their facebook page. *

Yelp
Found this little spot on TikTok posts. What a great Sundate place. It's small and cute, staff was super friendly and they're crazy busy (great sign)! Wait wasn't too long but you can tell the crowd was just starting to come. We had both the red and green pozole, super delicious! So much meat and I've never seen hominy this huge. Of course we had to try their Birrias. All I can say is well seasoned and the meat was so tender, overall just amazing. We definitely will be going back.

Cristina R.

Yelp
As i went to take my first bite I found a hair in my food. I'm so disgusted and disappointed. Had to throw a whole half gallon in the trash. Officially traumatized and wont be returning.
google avatar

Maribel G.

Yelp
Loved this place. It's hard for me to like other people's pozole but this one was delicious. I'm not a fan of big thick corn kernels but these were so soft accompanied by the soft pork shredded meat. I love that they include avocado with it because that's how my family eats it. Prices were amazing. Got a large to go pozole for about $14 which had 3 servings in it. Lasted me enough for breakfast the next morning. They also have picaditas which is what I grew up eating. They offer BYOB and Yoli's! Only bad thing is there is no parking and you have to park on Pulaski which is always full of traffic. Place is small as well but other than that, recommending to everyone I know. I hope the new place has parking and is larger.
google avatar

Beken P.

Yelp
The pozole Blanco was pretty good. I would definitely come back to this place to pozole again. It's a new favorite place to eat.
google avatar

Henry C.

Yelp
Unassuming! Excellent service by Arlene. Asked for the guacamole-- I request it with Serrano peppers. Delicioso. Their café de olla is amongst the best I have ever had. And their pozole (we ordered both green n red) also ranks amongst the best. Support this family run gem. You will not be disappointed.

Angel D.

Yelp
Chefs kiss! The pozole was delicious! We ordered red and green. Both had a lot of flavor and spice. Service and food are too notch!

Alina P.

Yelp
So good! Everything came out quick service was amazing. Pozole flight and picaditas were my favorite
google avatar

Javier P.

Yelp
I made an order for red and green pozole. Total time it took was 15 minutes. I picked it up on time as they had it all ready for me to go at the front table. This is really good pozole! I especially loved the green pozole. I feel like they could have added more meat to it. But it has great taste. I highly recommend if you're nearby and looking for a great pozole!

Beatriz G.

Yelp

Yelp
This is my go to pozoleria for a hangover! The green pozole is my favorite. But you don't need to be hungover to eat here, their food is so good and tasty -- you will not be disappointed

Mari C.

Yelp
Food was great & so was the service! Will definitely return again and try the red pozole.

Yelp

YEEESSIR!!! Pozole and beer will do the trick!! Just make sure you add plenty of chile and you'll be good to go.Glad I made it in.

Yelp
Excellent service, tasty - genuinely homemade - even the hominy, which make for the most authentic POZOLE you will have outside of Mexico. If you go on a weekend, be prepared to wait, though we didn't wait for long - maybe 10 minutes. You will be asked to provide your cell phone number and they call you back in as soon as space is available to seat you. Staff is extremely friendly, courteous and attentive. They offer a nice variety of other Mexican food - all looked amazing!
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
google avatar

Zurendra T.

Yelp
I googled best pozoles in chicago and this one came up from a few. And i must say.... It did NOT disappoint. I had the red pozole, and I was sooo satisfied by the taste the hominy, and everything was just perfect. Totally recommend!

Yelp
The first review of the year and oh wow, I am now Elite for 10 years and this is the very first review. I super rarely give a 5 because I don't think any review has to be a 5. BUT this time this is definitely a solid 5. Let me give you some background: PEKE'S is the nickname of the owner of this awesome establishment. Her given name is Petra and when I asked her where the name came from she proudly stated it was her nickname for many years. That explains the name and I absolutely love the back story of her humble beginnings that she shared also. She was kind and very much proud of her food. But of course, let me be the judge and jury on that! I ordered 2 tortas for my family and 2 tacos. Of course I had to try the posole. I asked the daughter behind the counter what she recommended from the various posoles and she said that the green one is what she would recommend. So I tried it. And I do have to admit it is amazing. Doña Pekes said that she does not use canned corn for the posole but fresh corn that she prepares and boils at home. Oh lawd I can't believe this. Who does this i ask, they do is my answer. So here is my absolute first review of the year. On 47th and Pulaski this establishment just set the bar high for Mexican restaurants in the area. I go to many on the area restaurants but this is the first time I had freshly made posole and not canned granos (corn) prepared at home. You will not be disappointed if you order the green posole but heed my warning, it packs a slight kick so you may want the lesser heat one. If you have a hangover by all means this is the Mexican cure (so I've heard, wink wink). This is definitely the place for me to return. And they make posole everyday so order ahead in case, but I highly doubt they run out. And they do uber eats also so don't make excuses. I'll be back this weekend with more mouths to feed.
