Pecking House Is Bringing Its Acclaimed Fried Chicken to Brooklyn’s Rosalu Diner | Eater NY

"I note that Peking House is the family restaurant out of which Pecking House was launched during the pandemic; it has been run by Huang's family for 40 years and served as the original home for the chile-fried chicken pop-up." - Emma Orlow

Lots of history. Great dive bar atmosphere. Excellent food. Amy gives outstanding customer service.

I don't know why this place has bad reviews. I've been here several times with my family and we always are happy. The staff is very helpful, especially when we have food allergies. The food is fresh and flavorful. We ask for No MSG and we order vegan. Plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans here. Also they will make a dish with no meat or sub for tofu if you ask.

Had a Friday dinner with a former workmate, satisfying our Chinese food cravings. Always enjoy black tea, though there was a stain in the cup—maybe lemon. Not a big deal. The restaurant was spacious with ample parking, but funny enough, we were the only ones there! After leaving, we discovered another room—it was a bar. Now we know where everyone was! Tried the house special soup; not as "special" as expected, just egg, shrimp, peas, and carrots, but still tasty. Followed by broccoli, mushroom, and the highlight—beef fried rice! The service is excellent, and they even help organize the leftovers we couldn't finish! A delightful evening that left both my tummy and mind happy.

Nice place, the people where friendly staff was great. Went there to meet up with friend. Only had drinks but the atmosphere was chill seen the food that was coming out for other customers and it looked tasty. Im happy I was introduced to this little gem

Google
From the outside you wouldn’t guess how great of food this place has in store. I finally decided to try this place with my family today. The lunch menu is huge and is cheap too! I was surprised to see how big of the portion sizes were. The food itself was good. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely come back!

Google
Ordered a M size seafood soup which was $16. I’ve got a huge bowl of egg soup with some cocktail shrimps and as they said scallops. I’ve ate a little before realized it’s not an actual seafood soup for $16. I’ve asked server to change it and she refused since I’ve ate it. All she said that scallops and shrimp are seafood. Don’t think that egg soup with some coctails is a seafood

Google
I've enjoyed many Chinese food restaurants, and this place is one of the best I've had. The almond chicken is so tender, and the crushed almond and chicken gravy is very tasty. The fried rice was very good, and with barbecued pork and egg flower soup I was very happy. I've eaten here 3 times in the last 2 weeks for lunch, you should try this place.

Google
I stopped here specifically because the food use to be delicious. I paid $15 for a lunch special. Chicken chow mein and fried rice. The rice is not fried rice, it’s brown rice. No egg and I found 1 pea, that’s it. The chow mein use to be my favorite and it is flavorless. The spring roll was good. But $15 for plain rice and some noodles. No thank you

Yelp
My wife and I decided to go back to Peking House for an in-house lunch, as opposed to takeaway. I have only one suggestion: PUT SOME MUSIC ON IN THE BACKGROUND!! The food is fantastic, and has been consistently so, and the staff are friendly. But it's like eating in a mausoleum. You can feel how uncomfortable people are speaking at a normal volume, because the only thing people in the place will hear is your conversation. Putting music on in the background would radically change the feel of dining there. It's Room Dynamics 101.

Yelp
Food is good.. friendly service.. nice atmosphere.. clean..Bar staff are excellent.. Great cocktails.. Need to change the wine.. It is cheap.. You can get great wine (Kirkland brand ) at Costco.. The wine you have none of my friends or myself can drink.. can I bring my own in .. for a corking charge of course??

Yelp
I got take out with a group of 8. Got to try various dishes. Put it this way, one of my friends said "this is offensively bad." Attached is a picture of their General Tso's Chicken - as you can see, or maybe can't see, there is a the tiniest piece of chicken within a thick layer of breading. This was not just one piece, we opened up many pieces and they all the same. The chicken was the size of a nail clipping and the rest was breading. Not to mention the sauce was flavorless altogether. Also got the beef and broccoli, tofu stir fry, chicken katsu combo, and others. Both the people who got the Egg Roll in combo meal said the egg was roll was pretty much inedible. Overall, everything was under seasoned and flavorless. Skimped on the meat. Definitely do not recommend.

Yelp
The food was good. I don't know why it has such low reviews. But as a yelper, I decided to give them a shot. The fried rice was delicious! I don't usually order the snow pea chicken but it was okay. I suppose if one is used to Panda Express Chinese food, they may not like the food here. The restaurant inside was nice. I ordered takeout so I can't speak for the ambiance. The takeout service was fast and friendly. I would go back and try another dish.

Yelp
This place was great for a family takeout! Quick, hot and tasty. Friendly service too. Broccoli beef, orange chicken, pork fried rice, and spring rolls were all delish!

Yelp
I decided to give this place one more chance a few weeks ago. I'm glad to say that this place has improved dramatically. While the food is still not what they used to be, there are some positive changes that were made to better their product. You have won me back as a customer. I still miss the REAL mandarin chicken. Service is still the same but I feel like less people go there now.
google avatar

Seth T.

Yelp
I had the sesame chicken for lunch, the chicken was cooked fine but the sauce wasn't very good, just not very flavorful. The fried rice was the absolute worst I've ever had, it just looked like regular rice, why call something fried rice when it isn't? No peas or anything in it. I started getting a stomach ache after eating the egg roll and a few pieces of the chicken, so I returned the food to the restaurant, and they did agree to letting me bring it back for a refund which I did atleast appreciate. I'm not sure if they use MSG and that's why I got sick, the sauce was really thick, gelatin like.

Yelp
This is truly a storied neighborhood restaurant. It began before my time as the Kong Chow restaurant in the 60s or so, a typical Cantonese/American style restaurant. It was either here or the now replaced Nulite Chinese in Kenmore that I grew up eating Chinese food. Fast forward little bit and a family owned New Peking in the old Harbin drive in on lake city way was one of the first to bring northern style Chinese food to Seattle and like other family owned Asian restaurants they proliferated that to helping family members open their own. This brought Peking House to this iconic North City location (my parents and siblings lived there before I was born) and subsequently a New Peking in Everett. None are there any more but wow do I miss their recipes especially the twice cooked pork made with a sauce like no other. She used to sell me containers of the sauce so I could make my own. This is a new set of owners and they and the other previous ones have changed the old Peking recipes to some degree making it much less authentic Chinese. Went to visit cousins still there over dinner and we stayed WAY too long. But the hostess was very patient to take our order after yacking too much and the only weird thing was she served out dishes in courses instead of all at once??? It was weird. But a huge family group of 15 or more had decided to come in right as we did and I don't think their kitchen does that much volume and could not keep up. This wasn't a problem but wouldn't always enjoy that if not to catch up with family I don't see much. The pork fried rice starter was good! Small portion though. Mongolian beef pretty good and ordered mild. Not overly sweet and pretty good meat to onion ratio. Small portion. Hot and sour soup very good and just needed a little white pepper. Sized to order. The salt and pepper pork chops were pretty good with the typical fried garnish only more bell pepper and onion and little garlic. I usually make this with jalepeno onion and garlic like the Chinese places we go to usually. I'd get these again and maybe ask for chili sauce. Fair portion size. The bbq pork though I didn't try it personally was sort of bland and dry looking served with only ketchup and mustard and a small portion. No sesame seeds I quit going here after dealing with the bar while dining there even for a late lunch. It's loud crazy and wild like many of its patrons and I learned not to engage the people exiting the front door while I was. On a Wednesday night it wasn't horrible and one similar encounter while leaving wasn't as bad with the drunk exiting but thought an uber should have been called. When we order delivered Chinese food we often order the Mandarin Family dinner here. Overall 4 stars is generous but this place is worthy of it and the food was genuinely and reliably good every time we've had it. It's just not like the more authentic ones I eat at more often. Prices have gone up but reasonable though the portion sizes are a little small.

Yelp
This is the worst fried rice I've eaten in the past 5 years! How is this place even in business. It's connected to a bar, so the entire place reeks of alcohol and strong strong stomach of cigarette smoke. Even the rice taste like cigarette smoke. I had never gone here, but I was starving. Isn't that how it always goes?! This rice and the few pieces of meat is drier than a saltine cracker. No oil has touched it. It's desert dry. The places is smoggy from the cigarette smoke, it's old, dark and dated. You have been warned. That $20 down the drain for me. Please avoid this place.

Yelp
We spent $20.00 on an order of sweet & sour rice. It was called in, arrived on time but we still had to wait an extra fifteen minutes. I guess that happens, they have many orders to fill. Our order came, tipped them and went home. We sat down to eat our meal and couldn't eat our chicken. It was way over cooked and hard as a rock. We had to throw it away, so frustrating! Don't order sweet & sour BBQ chicken
google avatar

Jessie L.

Yelp
Not authentic Chinese food. Also, the amount of food does not justify the price. The shrimp they use in this dish is the smallest frozen shrimp. never going back again

Patty M.

Yelp
Just don't do it! The fried rice wasn't fried at all. More like white rice with a little soy sauce mixed in, no egg or vegetables. Ok I found 1 pea and the chow mein was bland, no sprouts, little veggies. $15 lunch special and I got plain rice and bland noodles with 4 pieces of what might be chicken

Yelp
On Mondays they open at 4 pm instead of 11 am. Have been going there for years and have no complaints.

Yelp
Large food portions and tasty. Their set menu is great for larger family gatherings. We got the 5 person set and it was delicious. I will say that the menu images on Yelp are old and prices have changed. I didn't realize how old the images were when ordering so I was a little thrown off but that's not their fault.

Yelp
Adding another star because I feel stuffy for judging the restaurant a 3 star when I had a good experience. I remember the restaurant fondly and hope they're doing well.

Yelp
I am extremely disappointed with my recent experience at Peking House. My friends and I waited for **three hours** (yes, we timed it) and never received our dinners. We ordered five of the family dinners from the holiday menu soon after we arrived and sat in the lounge, which was not full. Several people arrived after us and received their dinner orders in reasonable time, not us... The bartender was great and kept checking with the kitchen about the food status, and was very apologetic, but that was the only positive part of our visit. When a dish finally arrived from the kitchen, it was the wrong dish and it was cold. To make matters worse, when I let chef know that it was the wrong dish and that we had ordered family dinners, she argued with me about what we had ordered and rudely told us to "just eat it." When I mentioned that we had been waiting for almost three hours, she shrugged and tried to charge us for the food we never received. Thankfully, the very sweet bartender intervened and said we should only have to pay for our drinks. We will never be back.

Ruth B.

Yelp
We've always enjoyed delicious food here. The servers are very nice and are helpful with explanations of dishes.

Joan B.

Yelp
Horrible. Will NEVER go back. Bartender was the worst. Couldn't do basics. Said he had low blood sugar. Eat something? He had NO CLUE what he was doing, which was spinning his wheels. I ate 2 bites of my meal, paid my bill and left. I left the food as well. Never ever again

Yelp
I was so sore and tired from physical therapy and didn't feel like cooking tonight so I decided to go here. Parking is a little tough here during the evening bc people are in the bar area enjoying some classic 80s rock like Bon Jovi. When you walk in I felt like I was transported back in time to some old school classic Chinese restaurant. It's a nice atmosphere but you can tell it's old school in there. I ordered for take out this time but I definitely plan to dine in soon. On tonight's menu was the egg flower soup, really unique from what I'm used to it had fresh corn and tomatoes in it and the flavor is delicious. Also had my go to order of crab Rangoons, you really can't go wrong with these crunchy appetizers. The for the main course I had the honey shrimp and beef fried rice. I would want some more sauce for the shrimp and the fried rice was good no complaints here. I'll definitely be back in to try some more dishes. I was thinking initially it'd be like a real Chinese food restaurant but it's really American style Chinese food dishes nothing wrong with that. It's very good and they had my order prepared in no time at all. Looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
Came in for an early dinner so it was very quiet and not busy. We did not order appetizers but did choose four entrees. Each dish arrived quickly and steaming hot. First was sweet and sour shrimp, which was perfect. The fried coating was crispy and thick. The sauce had enough sweetness to bring out the flavour of the shrimp. The veggie egg foo young was served in a thick and creamy gravy. Lightly fried and full of veggies, this dish was a huge hit. Next up, the crispy eggplant in garlic sauce. The fried coating was so crisp and good, but I didn't taste the eggplant too much in this dish. There was a light sauce, along with matchstick sliced veggies. Very good! Lastly, we ordered the shrimp with bean curd. I didn't have any of this but my son said it was excellent. The tofu was soft, and served with shrimp and veggies in a sauce of some kind. The atmosphere took me back to when I was a kid in the 80s and going to restaurants was a thrilling treat. It has an old school vibe with the red booths and chandeliers over each table. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and served a pot of tea immediately. In addition, the portions were very large. The only negative is there is a layer of dust and grime on the booth, sauce carousel, etc. It looks like nothing has been wiped down in years and my son said the bathroom was atrocious. Maybe that's not a huge deal to you? I was pretty hungry then so I ignored it. I'm not hungry now, so it's worth mentioning. Good food, parking, fast service, just a little grimy in spots.

Yelp
Would love to give a better review but will have to wait for a dine in experience. This was an Uber Eats delivery that I think the blame could be 50/50 for quality of delivery. The restaurant needs to package to-go orders better. The styrofoam containers both leaked their sauces of the entrees out into the bottom of the bag. Even if the driver never tilted the bag there still would have been sauces sloshing. But the food taste was excellent. Very tender Mongolian Beef and the Basil Chicken was full of veggies and white meat chicken. Great hot & sour soup. Would like the egg roll without sweet & sour sauce served on top to retain crispiness. Also specifically requested hot mustard & fortune cookies and received neither.

Ryan C.

Yelp
I should have checked Yelp first. The google reviews were okay when I pulled up directions but I got excited because the parking lot was pretty full. I ordered the General Tso Chicken, my go-to choice for any new Chinese Food Restaurant I try. It was pretty bad, perhaps among the worst I've ever had. The chicken was overcooked to the point most of the pieces were very hard and dry. The sauce wasn't great but it would have been passable if the chicken was cooked properly. The staff was polite and the decor was pretty standard for a Chinese restaurant.

Mark S.

Yelp
I have not dined in the restaurant for a long time. I order take out. I just would like to say that the food is fantastic, the people that run the counter are very friendly. You can have awesome Chinese food usually ready in 20 minutes. I sure am happy they are there when I have a hankering for Chinese food. I have never written a Yelp review before, but after my dinner tonight I thought I should. I think its a place that has been there so long its now flying under the radar. You wont be disappointed !!! Regards
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
Very good Chinese American take out. The vibe of the facility is definitely a different area, but the North City neighborhood would not be what it is without the addition of Peking House. The crab Rangoon is delicious!
google avatar

Aayushi B.

Yelp
Three stars for service and old school vibe of the place. The food was extremely greasy and unhealthy. I ordered shrimp egg noodles hakka style. It was not fried at all rather just soaked in oil. The portion was good but taste was very bland. I appreciate the stir fried vegetables but even they were too chunky and soaked in oil!
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
Horrible service. The lady that works there was SO RUDE! The broccoli beef was fatty and the hot and sour soup was so sweet. The other food was very bland.
google avatar

Josie G.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was quick. Did not eat inside was a pick up order but walking in the place was clean. Ordered spicy sweet and sour soup. Spicy prawns with veggies. And beef and broccoli. The portion was as full as we thought but overall the food was good. Would definitely come back again and order other meals.
google avatar

Kayla M.

Yelp
We order from here regularly but are really disappointed this time. I think this might've been the second or third time we had an issue with our order. This broccoli chicken is not seasoned and sent off like this, with the chicken juices in it and no sauce. We had to finish cooking it (seemed raw still) and add extra sauce to it because, as you can see, it has no sauce The fried rice for this dish also tasted like dreamy chicken juices... yum (nope) How can this be messed up?
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
This has always been our go-to for Chinese food since I was young. So glad they're still around after all this time. Even after several ownership changes, it has remained our favorite as the dishes are consistent and the service always friendly. Mongolian beef is the best-tender, flavorful and full of beef (not mostly onions like other places). Pot stickers are very good with the right amount of filing and dough. Egg foo young is also one if our favorites and is so delicious with a gravy served over the top that compliments perfectly. The fried rice is also delicious. We usually get bbq pork fried rice which has nice meaty pieces and good amount of mixed veg. Mu shu pork served w the thin crepe style pancakes and plum sauce also a great choice. It's old school inside for sure but I love that.

Yelp
I've been coming/brought to Peking House since my second birthday party. Think late 70's early 80's decor with beautiful wood carvings and bar off the entrance. Food is always yummy and they give you a lot! Service here is fairly fast and the newest owners are very nice & pleasant. Everytime I've ordered from them, I've had enough for lunch the next day.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Basic Americanized Chinese restaurant, but the food is unexpectedly spicy for its kind. The hot and sour soup that comes with the lunch special definitely has its share of hot oil. Not enough to burn your tongue, but enough to be noticeable. The lunch entrees themselves are plain and hearty, with enough quantity. Also comes with a couple fried won ton (or spring roll). There's no meat in the fried rice.
google avatar

Meghan R.

Yelp
Just moved to this area and wanted something close by and quick. Both of those were met by this place but my food was a little lacking in taste. I plan to go again and give them a second try though so hope to update this soon. I ordered kung pao beef. Unfortunately it lacked any spice/flavor. I usually get the chicken version at other places and there are always a ton of dried red chili's in it. There was only half of one in this order. Maybe I just needed to be clear that I can handle the heat. I was really happy with the amount of veggies that were in it though! As always, annoyed that rice costs extra.

Tyler B.

Yelp
Food is extremely good. Bar is your typical creepy wasted old people about to croak kind of place but cheap!!!
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
Ordered Cantonese dinner, but was missing sweet and sour sauce. Sides were okay, but mains were really disappointing. Egg rolls: good, crispy BBQ pork: moist and tasty BBQ pork fried rice: good Wonton soup: existent, didn't have veggies and was some wontons floating in salted broth. Almond Chicken: large portion, but the batter is very thick and the orangey sauce is pretty bland. It can with one full almond and some crushed up almonds (maybe two if you put all the pieces together). I wanted to like it, but was pretty disappointed. Sweet and Sour pork: barely any veggies, and the pork was a literal ball of dough (waaay too much dough). They also forgot the sweet and sour sauce, so that was very disappointing. Could have made it better (having a sauce would have been nice). Maybe other dishes are better here, but these were pretty disappointing. Wouldn't try again.

Kristina C.

Yelp
The bathrooms are disgusting. There are boxes and supplies piled up like a hoarder. The sweet and sour chicken had cold vegetables and no pineapple. The drinks were subpar. The service was slow. I wish I could rate them higher as there are not that many good Chinese restaurants around. I like Chinese food but here.
google avatar

Pattanapoom P.

Yelp
This is authentic Chinese foods. Most places in this country disappointed my Chinese parents. The tastes and the portions are superb. Really love this place.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
An "Excellent" rating by King County Food & Health inspectors is not easy to obtain, especially for a Chinese restaurant with a diverse menu, so seeing that on the front door was a pleasant surprise. Most Chinese restuarants struggle to maintain a "Good" rating. Now... the food. It's OK. Not a destination place but a very good neighborhood spot. The dishes are a little heavy on the oil and light on flavor but if you have a mild palate and are not looking for fire-breathing Szechuan flavors, this place will suit you well. The fried egg noodles could have been fried more evenly to a crisp and too much gravy was used so if you didn't eat it quickly, all the noodles got soft and mushy very quickly. The fish had no fishiness and the shrimp were firm and plump with no soft sections (decomposing). Garlic Chinese broccoli wasn't over-cooked, but like most places, is still served whole so be careful chewing it thoroughly so you don't gag. The mu shu pork was tasty and generous in serving size.
google avatar

Allison K.

Yelp
Authentic Chinese American. Very kitschy and exactly what you would expect from an old school neighborhood Chinese restaurant. I'll definitely go again. Would be great for a birthday party.
google avatar

Tasha S.

Yelp
Service is a hit or miss. My most recent visit I waited 3 hours for food, they gave me 3 cans of soda for waiting, they expired earlier this year, the food was okay. The fortune cookies were stale with a message from the manufacturer advertising they are celebrating their 100 year anniversary in 2017. They also stopped serving rice on the side of entrees.

Tom E.

Yelp
I used to live in the area of Peking House a couple of decades ago and happened to be back in the neighborhood. I recall it was dark inside the restaurant and the food was good. Evidently the business was purchased by new owners about 2 yrs ago. The interior is dark and dingy, and the couch in the entry has black duct tape trying to cover a big tear in the seat - not a good first impression. My wife ordered Kungpau chicken and I had the General Tso's chicken. My wife reported her lunch dish was "okay." Mine however, as terrible. The only part with flavor was the sauce. The chicken chunks appeared to be an alternative meat. Each time I chewed a piece it would shred into something else. I forced down two pieces and spit out two more before just finishing the fried rice leaving the rest behind. This used to be a good restaurant with enjoyable food but it is no longer. Just thinking about my experience is making me gag a bit. There will not be a next time I'm afraid. I really had hoped for a better experience.

Yelp
I rediscovered this restaurant when my cat had to go to the Animal Hospital across the street. They have sizzling rice soup which I love so much. Everything is delicious. Looking forward to ordering the Peking Duck.

Michelle C.

Yelp
Love the food and service. Just found this place and couldn't recommend it more. Please give it a try.

Tom P.

Yelp
Not impressive to look at inside or out, but we have found the food to be consistently excellent. My go-to is Mongolian Beef with 5 stars of spiciness, and I've never had a bad dish there--nor has anyone in my family. The one thing I'd say is that it's 50/50 as to whether there'll be music playing in the background. Doesn't sound like a big deal, until you wonder why you suddenly have the sensation that you're eating in a mausoleum. It's deadly quiet in there without the music, and you can tell diners are hesitant to talk to each other, for fear of being the loudest sound in the room. And sometimes...there's music in the background. My friendly suggestion to the owners would be to always make sure there's music playing in the background. It makes a huge difference for one's dining experience. In any case, it's our local place for dependably good Chinese food.
google avatar

Ken P.

Yelp
Peking house used to be my go to Chinese restaurant. The last three times I've been there I was very disappointed with the quality of the food. The rice was dry, the stir fry very oily, and the deep fried items were over cooked and had way too much flour or breading on them. It seemed like someone literally threw the meal together. To top it off the service sucked. Our waitress spent most of her time answering the phones and getting the take out orders ready. Time to find a new joint.

Clash G.

Yelp
I'm giving them five stars because their food is amazing BUT if you order a mandarin dinner to go make sure they put the gravy in it for the almond fried chicken. They only gave us sweet and sour sauce so we had to put that over the chicken and the pork. :( That was disappointing so just make sure you check your to go bag! Other than that the food is really yummy!

SM K.

Yelp
Ordered shrimp fried rice and ended up with chicken fried rice. They really don't pay attention to order details. And on top of that, I was charged the higher price for shrimp fried rice!!
google avatar

Katherine K.

Yelp
The rice is hard and the chicken gets strings in your teeth now. I would come here frequently but am tired of getting sour soup and not feeling well if I don't order at the right time or it's been slow. The food just has gotten so bad this last year.
