"This Russian dumpling shop in Historic Merchant’s Wharf caters to teenagers and the after-bar crowd downtown. Open late at night, it serves two flavors of hot dumplings – meat and potato-filled – with sriracha, spices, a dollop of sour cream and slice of bread. The record player is an added bonus." - Julia O'Malley

While visiting Juneau, Alaska, I tried Russian dumplings for the first time! Russia owned Alaska originally but sold it during a war to raise money, so there is still some Russian culture in certain areas of Juneau. The dumplings were soft and we had one batch with potato centers and one with beef centers. The sauce at the bottom tasted like a sriracha and vinegar mix and the dumplings were topped with some cilantro. I was happy to try something new and these dumplings were a perfect snack after a long bike ride!

I had never heard of this dish before, until I stumbled across this place, and wow! It was absolutely delicious. The dumplings were amazing, and the toppings of curry powder, rice vinegar and chili just took it to the next level! I'm only here in Juneau for a few days, but I will for sure be back before I leave.

Google
Great little place for a quick bite. Very simple menu, only 2 items, potato or beef. A local had to help us out with that. Once we received our order, one of each, I was delighted by the simpleness of the dish and how good they tasted. The person behind the counter was so helpful and kept a smile on her face even with a long line and a couple of newbies not knowing what they were doing. It is a small space with only a few tables but we were able to sit and enjoy our meal before we headed back to the ship. Great place to try if you find yourself on the pier in Juneau and wanting a quick, delicious bite.

Listen to me, you need to go here. We got a whole box of these dumplings for $9 and they were worth every penny. The box we were handed weighed about the same as a small child. The owner makes them from scratch and you can absolutely tell. We had the beef dumplings with a sriracha-vinegar mix, melted butter, and curry powder. They were cooked fresh for us on the spot and were ready in under 10 minutes. The staff is very friendly and helpful as well. Seriously just go here and try it for yourself.

Google
Absolutely delicious food that was fast and felt like the same company that used to be downtown Madison, Wisconsin on campus. I definitely would come back into town just to eat there.

Google
Amazing dumplings for anytime of the day! Late night food stays open late for the bar crowd. The beef dumplings with everything on it taste amazing.

Cardwell Lynch

Google
Cool little place with great tasting Russian Dumplings! I had to try them and I wasn't disappointed.

Sheri M

Google
The dumplings were wonderful. Meat or potatoes. It was suggested that you order the dumplings with everything and enjoy the rye bread that comes with and use two sour creams. So very tasty.

Yelp
Quaint little spot! Food was my first time trying, tasted interesting--not my cup of tea but it was still very flavorful and interesting to try. I was feeling very seasick from our cruise though so I can't say much! Otherwise I thought it was a nice hole in the wall spot tucked away along the coast of Juneau.

Brittany H.

Yelp
So yummy. We went hiking at the glacier then stopped in for a late night snack. The beef option was amazing. Highly highly highly recommend these pockets of deliciousness. And the sour cream was a nice addition. So glad we stopped in. Menu: Potato or Beef. Big menu I know. But simple is sometimes the best. Atmosphere: Small, loud, good vibes, hard workers. Steaming pots ready to go. **Service was fast for us at 10pm on a Wednesday, but could see how a busy night could happen. Worth the wait.

Genevieve M.

Yelp
Almost couldn't find this place in the Historic Merchants Wharf but was so glad we did. It came highly recommended and it totally aligned with its reputation. Small space with a few tables in a little restaurant/ store looking area but dang.. their dumplings!!! Choice of potato or meat ( we got both... I prefer the meat) and we got it fully loaded ( that is the only way to do it right in my book for the full experience). Quick service - food is fixed right there and freshly topped. When in Juneau again- not missing the chance to go back.

Yelp
This little hole in the wall is a delicious find. Russian dumplings. Easy menu, meat or potato. lol service is super fast, and made to order. Don't just get one order, get two or three!!

Marney R.

Yelp
Wow! I love Yelp finds. I enjoy opening the app and checking what is in the area. This is not one of Juneau's most famous tourist places but it should be. The simple dumplings are pillowing dumplings of perfection! We ordered 1 beef and 1 potato. She was able to mix it up for us since we ordered two. We had all the toppings. Butter, curry, cilantro and some other ones I forgot! I added sour cream to mine but they were amazing! $9 for a serving and it was very filling! Drinks remained reasonably priced instead of marked up high. It was clear this is a local favorite. One staff was able to keep the customers moving and orders coming! Very impressed now I have to plan another trip to Alaska!

Emerine C.

Yelp
If you want something in Juneau other than seafood you have to go here! There are two options for pel'meni potato or beef. I opted for potato with everything on it and it was delicious and flavorful without being too spicy. Service can be slow but it was one woman working so completely normal for that and we weren't in a rush.

Alyssa M.

Yelp
These little dumplings are so flavorful and delicious. They're a bit spicy with everything on them, so keep that in mind if you're sensitive to spice. I added lots of sour cream and that helped mellow out the spice and give it a nice creaminess. The service was okay, though it took forever for our food to be ready. Only one person is working to make the dumplings, so it's understandable. The ambiance is cute with some little decorations and books everywhere, but keep in mind that it's super small with not a lot of seating. I'd definitely recommend this place if you're in town!

Sabrina K.

Yelp
I had these in Sitka and Juneau. They are amazing! My only regret is now I'm back in my hometown and craving them.

Frank C.

Yelp
Amazing place yummy dumplings. We will definitely try them again. The staff was wonderful and took the time to explain about the dumping.

Stay S.

Yelp
Delicious if you order the right toppings! Curry, sour cream, cilantro, all the goodness, pile it on!

Yelp
Very bare bones little cafe that offers two things... beef pelmeni and potato pelmini. I've never had Russian Dumplings before, but after eating these, I understand the satiating comfort that this food provides especially in the harsh northern winters. Soft pillowy dumplings that really are exactly what you expect from a hearty European dumpling.

Laurie W.

Yelp
I can't believe I finally figured out what this restaurant is called. We were in Juneau 6 years ago and I still dream of having dumplings as good as these! I would love a recipe, although I'm sure they wouldn't taste the same.

Gail M.

Yelp
I've been going here for over 20yrs now. Always homemade and delicious. Make sure to get all the sauces and cream to dip. Get extra, you'll want leftovers!

Alvah L.

Yelp
Wow. What a find. Kind of 'dumpy' but hip. Russian mini dumplings with different toppings. Meat or potato alternatives. No frills and not expensive. Way more interesting than cruise oriented restaurants and bars

Andrew T.

Yelp
It's probably my mistake that I didn't like it here but it's my opinion. There's only two things on the menu and four toppings which can be combined anyway you want. I got the beef dumplings all the way and I burnt my face off from the spice. Some people might like that but I didn't. The dumplings themselves I could tell were delicious, but I made the mistake of adding hot sauce and curry powder not fully understanding the ramifications. The butter and chives were probably good if I could taste anything else.

Aurelie A.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious ! Service can be slow at times because it always soooo busy and the music is SUPER loud so if your sensitive or old ( as the signs inside say) might wanna skip this sit down and eat time. There are tons of records displayed on the wall and that you can put ok the record player! Which is super fun. My fav spot for a 1 am snack.

Tony S.

Yelp
I love this place!! Definitely get your moneys worth, I'll even buy 2 if I'm hungry. I hit this place up everytime I'm in Anchorage, which they had a location in Dallas.

Victoria M.

Yelp
So delicious and filling. I can tell this is the original form of Slader's Alaskan Dumplings in Searcy AR where I went to college. Took a little time to get my food (it was busy) but worth the wait.

Breeze Y.

Yelp
No menu, just u and the 2 choices of pelmeni: beef or potato We tried both and they were both scrumptious! Tangy acidity, warm, and so soft and flavorful...So comforting for a rainy day in Juneau. You can't go wrong with either choice! Service was excellent! Loved the cashier! She has great music choice and was so friendly Exterior is so unassuming but this was definitely a memorable place with such delicious and affordable food!

Rashmi D.

Yelp
Perfect for a quick bite, I gor potato dumplings with everything, and they just were perfect amout!

Deirdre P.

Yelp
Interesting take on pelmeni for sure with the curry and siracha and cilantro. Works really well together. Little bummed to hear they don't make the pelmeni in house anymore but good for them for expanding.

Scott M.

Yelp
Its a must go to when in Juneau! Late night and delicious! Don't hesitate. Go now! Get everything on your dumplings.

Kyle M.

Yelp
This is not a review of the food, not a review of the staff, this is a review of the management specifically. My wife and I came in tonight and everything started fine, we placed our order and waited like usual. Out of nowhere dozens and dozens of awful teens and drunk adults came in and bombarded the only worker, this poor girl was harassed, yelled at (quite literally cursed her out for NO reason) and was treated so poorly it was insane. I felt so incredibly bad for her. If you are the only place open late in the entire town HOW ON EARTH do you only have one employee working? This poor girl was swamped. The customers were horrendous towards her and the fact that the owners/management don't hire more people to help is crazy Again, this was truly unacceptable behavior towards this employee and she deserves better.

Cade S.

Yelp
Be nice when you walk in, otherwise you'll get taught how to properly show manners. Love the energy and the staff. Food is always good, no need to talk about that.

Mark G.

Yelp
Im a tourist traveling through Juneau and I'm also a first generation American with Russian parents that grew up on pelmeni. Obviously my mom makes the best ones but these are pretty pretty pretty good if I may say. Very soft and pillowy and filled with flavor. Not sure how I feel about the curry seasoning, next time I'd leave it off. But if I was drunk or starving or both, this comfort food joint will always hit the spot. And it's pretty affordable too.

Yelp
Delicious dumplings | Funky atmosphere | Can't miss quick stop We were passing through Juneau on an Alaskan cruise and wanted to make sure we ate some great local food. Pel'meni was on our list and it was the perfect pop-in on the way back to the boat on a very rainy and chilly day. My partner and I split a 20 piece potato pelmeni order. The pelmeni were outstanding! There is a lot of Russian food where we live, but these are some of the best we've had. They came smothered in sauce, dry paprika, curry powder, and topped with fresh cilantro. We followed the instructions to scoop some sour cream, then pick up a dumpling, enjoy, and repeat. It was so good! The final step after all the dumplings were gone was to take the rye bread and soak up the sauce at the end of the meal. Again, amazing! The gentleman behind the counter was super friendly and helpful. The environment was cozy with fun tunes playing. The wall has a bank of vinyl to appreciate as well. If you are just passing through Juneau or need (what I assume MUST be) a great nighttime snack after the bar, you owe it to yourself to stop by Pel'meni in Juneau!

ReAnn J.

Yelp
Perfection! Fantastic stop no matter the time...late night stop is super! These dumplings are magical, and the service is top notch! Enjoy often

Darren G.

Yelp
Food: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Ambiance: 10/10 This is definitely a great alternative for those who want a flavorful warm cost friendly lunch or snack while in Juneau instead of seafood. These Russian dumplings are available in either beef or potato and are budget friendly. The one worker behind the counter was as friendly and kind as possible and took her time to explain how the restaurant worked. The inside of the restaurant looks like a dive bar vibe but it was clean and had a decent amount of chairs and tables for those to sit inside and eat.

Simon M.

Yelp
Best dumplings I've had in recent memory. Great price, overall great vibe. Cook was very helpful. Can't wait to go back.

Leigh H.

Yelp
This is probably the best value restaurant in downtown. There are really only 2 items on the menu. We got the beef dumplings (20 for $10) and now can say that we have tried Russian food.

Todd M.

Yelp
First things first, the food was amazing. Very casual setting inside the restaurant, pretty small pretty humble, and very nice decor inside. The service was also exceptional. I never got the Chef's name but he's very casual and seems like a super honest guy. I was here with my swim team and he handled the lot of us very well.

Yelp
Russian dumplings, renowned for their ability to satiate the cravings of those inebriated by the spirits of the night, are indeed a gustatory delight of unparalleled merit. In my humble estimation, this establishment bears commendable testament to the artistry of crafting these delectable morsels. Juneau, a locale not known for an abundance of late-night dining options, finds solace in the welcoming embrace of this culinary refuge, open during the hours when nocturnal appetites crave appeasement. The virtues of expediency and affordability continue to be the hallmarks of this culinary haven, offering patrons swift gratification without undue expenditure. However, in this symphony of late-night indulgence, there remains a conspicuous absence: the libation of beer. The omission of this quintessential companion to nocturnal revelry leaves a discerning connoisseur with an unfulfilled aspect of the experience. Nonetheless, it is with profound appreciation that one acknowledges the role played by this establishment in satisfying the culinary yearnings of Juneau's denizens during the late hours. As a purveyor of quick, economical, and, above all, satisfying sustenance, it emerges as a reliable bastion against the pangs of late-night hunger. It is my sincere hope that, in the future, the symphony of its offerings may find harmonious accompaniment with the addition of that cherished libation, thus perfecting the nocturnal culinary experience.

Ashley W.

Yelp
I'm not familiar with Russian dumplings, but gave them a shot and they are excellent! There's two options, meat or potato. I ordered the potato. About halfway through the potato, I placed an order for the meat and they were equally as good.

Eva G.

Yelp
Potato or Beef Dumplings? Those are your options. This place has been around for as long as I can remember. Always comfort food when I'm in Juneau arriving late at night or even just to bring back from travel. Generous portions. Rye bread is included so it a plus for me to savor it all!!! Oh and enjoy with hot sauce!!! Yum!!!

Jordana G.

Yelp
Follow up visit. Still delicious dumplings. Well worth a trip down the wharf for a beef or potato Alaskan treat with nontraditional condiments like rice vinegar, sriracha, curry powder, and cilantro along with your usual sour cream. One order is plenty for one meal, or split an order of potato and an order of beef between two or three people.

Terry W.

Yelp
You can have any flavor you like as long as it's potato or beef. And anything you wanted as long as it's dumplings. That's what this place does. Russian dumplings (similar to pirogi). And they do it very well. Very limited seating. You can opt for the toppings, or not. One was curry powder, which doesn't sound very Russian to me. But we had her put on the "standard" stuff that they do, which included curry powder. Very tasty. We ordered one of each, and it filled us up adequately.

Jessica B.

Yelp
There's only two options... Potato or beef. But they're both delicious! I liked beef best, fully dressed with butter, cilantro, curry powder and a Sriracha oil/sauce. So comforting, so warm right out of the pot. Easy to take with you!

Robin S.

Yelp
Absolutely grease late j night options when no other fold is available in Juneau. Vegan friendly & awesome staff!

Scott G.

Yelp
Ordered one beef dumpling with everything. Was only $9 so a great value. Nice size portion for a light lunch or dinner for most. Plus it's dumplings so super filling. Got it topped with everything which includes butter spice and a homemade spicy hot sauce. Not to spicy. Open till 1am in the Summer.

Matt M.

Yelp
Russian dumplings!! Do I need to say more? You can choose beef or potato and then add a few toppings such as hot sauce, curry, cilantro, butter. This is one of those places that only does one thing, but they're very good at it. Now I'm not an expert when it comes to dumplings. I can't tell you how authentic these are because I've never had them before. But I did enjoy them. And I thought for $10 it was a good deal. The place itself isn't much to look at. I almost walked by it without even seeing it. Once you walk in you'll see 5 small tables. It's not a place to hang out at all day and accomplish anything. It's probably a better idea to take your food to go. Maybe walk the boardwalk and eat at the same time. Enjoy the park and people watch while you eat.

Sabin W.

Yelp
Recommended by a friend. A definite local favorite. The better half loved them. I think it would be awesome late night drunk food.

Sean M.

Yelp
Food was delicious and affordable. Staff was very friendly and they play good music. Definitely worth a stop and a nice break from some questionable food on the cruise ship.

Kristina C.

Yelp
So good. A must try to have something different especially if coming in on a cruise. Get both the beef and potato each have a distinct taste!

Michael G.

Yelp
My first time having Russian food and legit, I am a HUGE fan of Pel'meni or Russian dumplings. You have the choice of meat or potato. We had meet. It comes, flavored with curry powder, hot sauce, and cilantro. Sour cream and bread are served on the side. The flavors all complimented each other well and these dumplings are pretty addicting. Young man, who may've been the owner, was really friendly and have great advice about Juneau in general. I would definitely eat them right there and then as I'm sure the dumplings yay better fresh. Lastly, this spot is super affordable!

Alden C.

Yelp
What a treat this place was! Juneau (at least downtown) definitely makes foodies swoon! This place specializes in Russian Dumplings. I first had them around Seattle but that restaurant closed so I was at a loss. So I definitely insisted we stop by here for lunch. And it was wonderful! I had the Potato Dumplings with cilantro and a Sriracha type hot sauce which made this dining experience wonderful. It's a place with not a lot of frills and there could be a line to place and to receive your order but it's so worth it!

Sharece B.

Yelp
I was really excited to visit Pel'meni when we visited this port. And I was definitely pleased with the food. Unfortunately, I wasn't so impressed with the service; if I wasn't so set on getting the best food in town, I definitely wouldn't have waited. The cafe attendant was pretty rude and was flirting with her boyfriend for the full 30 minutes we were waiting for the food. I'd still go back because even though I got bad vibes from the environment, the pel'meni itself was awesome.

Spencer S.

Yelp
Simple food with great flavors! My nephew recommended the beef dumplings with curry powder and cilantro. Dumplings are boiled and sour cream can be added to make it a bit of a stew. This has go to be one of the most affordable places in Juneau and the cans of pop are just a buck. Really enjoyed the dumplings!
