For the Love of Tang: 5 Spots for Assam Laksa in Singapore

"Unlike Penang Signature, Penang Kitchen serves a variety of dishes native to the Malaysian state. Their seafood mee sua kor, prawn noodle soup and fried kway teow are all good but what we're really after is their assam laksa. A thick, flavourful broth with a real kick of chili is what you get." - Alethea Tan

my honest review based on my experience. Service : 1. U need to walk-in to the counter to place order and they expect you to pay immediately after ordering. It's kind of weird for a restaurant type setup. 2. Unhappy expression while giving the food. I wonder why the service person keeps the face angry...lol 3. Food comes to your table less than 5 mins ( so no waiting time ). Food taste : 1. Honestly nothing special or extraordinary 2. char kway Teow - 4/5 Prawn noodle soup - 1/5 Loh bak - 2/5 Ambiance: 1. Decent place with Aircon - 4/5 Price : Very expensive 🫰

Food was delicious! Ordered the fried rice, char kueh teow, and the kueh pie tee. Pricing is quite steep which is a pity because the dishes aren't huge. Was a lovely meal nonetheless

The restaurant has a somewhat dated ambiance, but the food is reasonably good. We chose to dine here primarily because they accept CDC vouchers. The service was attentive and prompt, thanks to the staff member taking our orders. However, the kueh pie tee had a somewhat lackluster, non-crispy exterior, and the rice cracker was a bit soggy. On the positive side, the nasi goreng had good flavor. The place was relatively crowded, and overall, the experience was average.

We tried this place as you were passing by. Quite a different setting. But the food's flavor was average. I won't go to this place again and I find it a bit too pricey. The ambience is a bit classy. The dated feel is part of the experience. Not the best place to go if you are really really hungry.

Longing for some authentic Penang food? You must try Penang Kitchen! They have Penang dishes that you cannot find anywhere else in Singapore! Penang Kitchen: Penang Kitchen Main branch: 5 Coronation Rd Far East Plaza branch: 14 Scotts Road 03-89 Far East Plaza, 228213 Opening Hours: Approximately 10.30am to 9pm Break Time: 3pm to 4pm Closed every Monday Ambience rating 9/10: Penang Kitchen brings you right back to Penang with pictures of Penang streets and their iconic dishes like Penang style rojak, Penang assam laksa etc. The dining area is very cozy and feels like home. You will find the boss, Aunty Stella, her daughter Shanmei and staff greeting each table and serving the food from the kitchen. Loving the vibes! The superb food! Rating 9/10: I must say that some dishes I have never thought that they were from Penang. Also the dishes are very homecook style and taste of HOME with secret recipes Also they are cooked by Malaysians! How authentic it can be! Among all the dishes we ordered, here are the standout dishes I loved and you must try: 1. Penang style Rojak ($9): very very delicious rojak, you will get addicted to it. The rojak has Buah Long Long fruit, rose apple, mango, cucumber, pineapple, turnip, starfruit + secret weapon : crunchy fritters. 2. Appetizer platter, Belachan Chicken Wings + Loh Bak ($15): Must try! Super delicious and the chicken wings were so fragrant. I love loh bak and likewise, addictive 3. Assam Laksa ($10): unique flavour and the soup base is superb 4. Penang Char Kway Teow ($10): check out how they cook it in the wok in the video! 5. Seafood Mee Sua Kor ($11.80): Not many local eateries, if any, serve this Penang delicacy. My personal favourite if you like mee sua! 6. Curry Kapitan with Rice ($10): I have not heard this dish before! The curry tasted really unique. A must try! 7. Buah Long Long Juice ($6): this fruit in English is called great hog plum/June plum. Penang Kitchen’s version comes with no added sugar and is super refreshing. insta: Unconventional Passionss

Located near Botanic Garden MRT and within walking distance! If you need a good Penang food fix, this is a good place to go to! Ordered the Kueh Pie Tie, Assam Laksa, Char Kuay Teow, Lor Bak, Fruit Rojak and Chendol. The Kueh Pie Tie’s flavour is light and the biscuit was crispy and fresh, much to my liking. Assam Laksa’s taste was good, but not too much fish in it, probably to adapt to Singaporean’s palate! Prefer it with more fish, like the ones in Penang but it was still good! Char Kuay Teow was great too! Similarly, this is a matter of preference of taste to the char kuay teow. I like it more savoury like this. Fruit Rojak was my best bet! It was a nice sauce towards the sweeter side and the crackers were crispy and fragrant with a good mix of rojak fruits. Will come back for my next visit to try the prawn noodles 😍

Best Penang style Char Kway Teow I had in Singapore. Nicely char thin rice noodles, with small fresh prawns. Prawn soup noodle was Singapore style that uses pork bone + prawn soup base. Filled with lots of ingredients. Loh Bak (Fried meat roll) is a must try, filled with chunky pork belly rather than minced meat, taste really good. Staff were friendly and nice, able to speak both English and Mandarin.

Yelp
Whenever I have a craving for Assam Laksa, I go here. It's yummm. Their prawn mee is not the best, but they serve very good char kway teow, ngoh hiang (called loh bak) and chicken wings. Warm family atmosphere. Reasonable prices. Hope they continue to stay in business, as the number of outlets serving Assam laksa in central Singapore is dwindling fast.

Yelp
This place is pretty old. It's been here since the 90s. The food is somewhat mixed with some dishes much better than others. Best is the duck soup. It's really rich and flavourful with a sweet herbal taste. There's quite a lot of duck meat inside too and the portion is generous - the portion for 1-2 can feed 2-3. The egg foo Yong is good too. It is an Omelette with lots of ingredients and is tasty and fluffy. The char Kway teow smelled really fragrant but the taste was only so so and didn't have a rich smoky wok taste. The laksa was ok but too spicy. The stock was decently rich. The lor bak was tasty, crispy and juicy but the spice mix reminds me of the Singapore version. The belachan chicken wings were not bad too - well seasoned and crispy. The drinks were most normal but nutmeg lime was interesting. It's the first time I've seen this drink. The nutmeg was judiciously applied and wasn't too strong, adding a pleasant twist to the lime. The Red ruby was pretty good with a reasonable amount of red ruby and clear jelly. What the menu called Gula melaka was really gula melaka sago. And it was great. The gula melaka was very rich and the coconut milk in it complemented it well. Most of the main dishes are a little small for the price though

Yelp
I've been coming to Penang Kitchen since 7 years ago, when I was still a JC kid. It has many memories of my JC times and I absolutely enjoy the food here. The Char Kueh Teow (extra spicy) is a challenge for your taste buds, but is so fragrant you just cant help wanting more. The hokkien mee (or prawn noodle soup as more commonly known in Singapore) has a thick and flavorful broth. I love the lor bak and the balachan chicken. The wait for the food is usually longer since the restaurant is pretty small and they serve everything "home cooked" style. They used to have a student lunch promo but I'm not sure if it is still running! It can get a tad pricey without the promo though!

Yelp
I like the fact that the food which Penang Kitchen serves are unpretentious and full of home-cooked flavours. I especially like the lor bak- the meat is crisp on biting but at the same time still tender and melt-in-your-mouth good, and is paired with a special kind of sauce (sweet/chilli). Even though I've never tried their laksa, I've heard from friends that the laksa is also very well done and their generosity with the ingredients more than make up for the small portion. Their ngoh hiang is however rather mediocre with a pasty aftertaste. I've definitely tasted better. They are almost always full during lunch hour and dinner time, even though the turnover rate is pretty fast if you dont mind the wait. Sometimes, the food can take quite long to arrive because alot of orders that come in to the restaurant are not for dine-in customers. Overall, not a bad place to visit, but can be quite a pricey experience if you are looking to try a variety of dishes.

Yelp
This was for the only place to go to for any kind of Penang food. I know, "but Joe, there are tons of joints serving Penang food," you'll say. But you'd be wrong. It's not Penang food that most of those other places serve. So, let's just let that one go, ok? I used to frequent this place before I discovered Penang Place. The food here is nostalgically authentic and on the menu, the char kway teow and Penang Rojak deserve special mention. The char kway teow has enough heat, the noodles are consistently cooked through and al dente, the sprouts are crunchy and the ingredients are fresh but not as fresh or as plentiful as at Penang Place. They also use a narrower more springy flat rice noodle. Details, details.... The Penang Rojak has fresh ingredients, an authentic base of pungent shrimp paste and a good quality chili paste which is likely homemade. The water apples (jambu), kelongdong, and jicama chunks are dressed nicely by the rojak sauce and each holds its own in this crunchy, spicy jam session in your mouth. I didn't come here more often, because for Penang food, this place's prices gave me a nosebleed each and every time. I'm not complaining, nobody put a gun to my head, marched me in, sit and order. It's just that for what is essentially hawker fare at a mom and pop hole in the wall the prices are steep. Again, just for the record, not complaining...just saying.

Yelp
This place serves great Penang food and it's my favourite place in Singapore to get Penang hawker fare. I especially like their Assam Laksa and Penang Char Kway Teow. Too bad that the Char Kway Teow doesn't come with cockle else it would have been a killer dish.

Yelp
Went there two times. Food is quite tasty but much too expensive. 8,30 for a Char Kway Teow? Seriously? You will find Hawkers who serve you Penang dishes just as good if not better for at least half the price. The extra service and the AC is not worth paying 50% more. Especially when the AC is mot working like when I was there. Will not come back unless they drop the prices.

Yelp
So this is supposedly one of the spots to eat Assam Laksa. And there are not many in Singapore. However, having just travelled from Penang and missing the amazing cuisine there. The Assam Laksa is ok but lacks the sourness (tamarind), is a tad salty and is less fishy (because they may be cheaping out with less fish based broth) than it should be. But its fine, maybe not worth the & $8+ that they charge for it, but if your missing Penang it might do the job. But BEWARE, the service is slow, poor AND they are DISHONEST with the bill. First they wanted to charge us 20 cents for water, so they miscounted and snuck another 20 cents under another line item hoping we wouldn't notice. Whatever its only 20 cents. Then they double charged us for a dish we only ordered 1 of. Then they didn't want to recalculate the tax and service fee (duh, if you charge more for something you didn't eat, naturally the tax and service charge should be reduced). But EVEN THEN, the cashier tried to sneak in another lime juice even after all this miscalculating, almost as if she wanted to see if she could sneak in another $4 without us noticing (WHAT you didn't think we would notice and can do speed math?! Dude I'm fucking Asian of course I am a walking calculator). Then to top it off, they gave us ATTITUDE for knowing our shit? NOT worth the trek at all. You may be a neighborhood institution and survive on neighborhood business but anyone traveling: DO NOT BOTHER MAKING THE TRIP TO EAT HERE, it is a waste of your cab fare and your tummy.
