🌶️ Famous Penang Road Laksa (乔治市槟城路驰名叻沙) 📍 Jalan Penang, George Town, Penang Ambience & Setting: This unassuming street stall tucked along a weathered shophouse wall is the very definition of Penang’s street food charm. Queues form quickly, especially on weekends, as both locals and tourists brave the sun for a bowl of the island’s most talked-about Assam Laksa. The setup is old-school — plastic stools, metal tables, and the rhythmic clatter of ladles echoing through the narrow lane. Despite the heat and crowd, the atmosphere is alive and full of character. Taste & Texture: The Assam Laksa lives up to its fame — the broth is deeply flavorful, tangy, and complex, striking a perfect balance between spicy and sour. Each spoonful carries the fragrance of tamarind, lemongrass, and torch ginger, with shredded mackerel adding richness. Toppings of fresh pineapple, cucumber, onions, and mint bring a refreshing crunch, while the chili and shrimp paste (hae ko) intensify the umami. The noodles are springy and slightly chewy — ideal for soaking up the broth. Drink Pairing: Most diners wash it down with an ais kacang or cendol from the next stall — cold, sweet, and perfectly timed relief from the spicy laksa. Service & Crowd: Be prepared to queue, but service is surprisingly quick once you’re seated. The elderly vendor still works the pot with practiced ease, and you can sense decades of tradition in every bowl. Verdict: A must-try for anyone visiting Penang. The experience — from queueing on the roadside to savoring that first tangy sip — captures the very soul of Penang street food. Authentic, nostalgic, and unforgettable.

Pemamg Road Famous Laksa is very well-known in the Georgetown area. Its specialty is Laksa with beehoon and sour broth, topped with basil, mint leaves, and ginger leaves. The taste is very unique and delicious. This restaurant has received the Michelin award in 2024, 2025, and 2026. In addition to laksa, the place also serves char koay teow and Penang-style seafood omelet. Overall, all the dishes are delicious, but the laksa is the most delicious.

One of the rare exception where a famous, popular food spot actually live up to the hype. The char koew teow is excellent. The color might be pale but it pack lots of punch. Properly seasoned, savory & spicy. With strong wok hey, this is nothing short of excellent. No Sambal, no overdrench in soy sauce. It simplicity done absolutely right. I recommend to take the duck egg variant. Definitely worth it Also had the oyster. It's ok. Nothing to speak about. Abit oily. Not recommended Had their ice tea/Teh ais. It's very good. Would be better if less sweet I went exactly at 9am,and already there's 10 people behind me. The place got packed & que might buildup, but i find their service to be prompt & quick. Worth waiting, given how good the food is Absolutely recommend.

Google
Visited Penang Road Famous Laksa and after seeing the very long queue, we decided that if we were waiting that long, we might as well order everything. So we went for the char kuey teow, laksa, and oyster omelette and honestly, not a single regret was had. Everything was really tasty and full of flavour, the kind of food that immediately makes you understand why people are happily queuing in the heat. It was cheap, satisfying, and dangerously easy to keep eating. By the end of it, I was already considering a second round despite being very full and very content. Great food for friends and family and absolutely worth the wait. I would come back again without a doubt, even if I had to travel a fair distance and queue all over again.

Google
Probably one of the best restaurants in Penang that truly lives up to its Michelin recognition. The food was excellent! Their Assam Laksa and Char Kuey Teow are simply legendary, so flavorful and worth all the hype. Just a heads up, be ready for the queue because they really live up to their name “Famous.” Expect to wait a bit, so bring some patience haha. It’s totally worth it once you get your food. Hands down, one of the best in Penang. I’d definitely come back to eat here again. Highly recommended!

Google
Penang Road Famous Laksa never disappoints. The Char Kuey Teow with duck egg is incredibly flavourful, smoky, and rich the duck egg takes it to another level. Every bite is indulgent yet balanced. No wonder this place earned a Michelin award, truly well-deserved and a must-try for any Penang food lover.

Google
4.5⭐️ great laksa, ok char kway teow Laksa has great flavour that is very different from the one in Singapore. It has sour and spicy flavour, but similar to some Thai food I had before. I ordered small portions, it is indeed small. Char kway teow is normal level that not too different from the one I had in Singapore

Google
Love the asam laksa here! But cant say for the fried oyster ( having said that, to each their own). Come try you may like it. Fried oyster was too soft for my liking but edible. Laksa - Very good, enough sour, enough spicy and yummmmmmy !! Enjoyed the laksa !! We reached this place at 9.30am, on a Thursday. No crowd. Promptly sat. Not too noisy. Toilet very clean ( good job ! )

Yelp
I'm very surprised by the reviews on this place. But then again, it was years ago and only 2 reviews. I was traveling through Malaysia 2 weeks ago starting in KL, Melaka, Ipoh, and finally Georgetown. This Penang style laksa was a HIGHLIGHT of my food trip. Much preferred over Melakan style. The restaurant also earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand 2024. Not super packed but as we were wandering the area and passed by the place multiple times that day, there was a steady stream of folks going in and out. Noticed a local tour guide also stopping by this place as well. Got in right before they closed at 5:30PM and ordered a small bowl of laksa (7rm) and an iced chrysanthemum tea (2.50rm). Penang laksa is much more tangy/sour, spicy with a depth of umami flavor (from the fish/seafood) lacking in the other ones I've tried in other cities. They added a generous amount of shallots, cilantro, raw pineapple and had this rice based noodle that was delicious. Broth was slightly on the spicier side, flavors were heavy and towards the end, a bit fishy with all the slivers of meat. But such a great find! And amazing price point (less than 2 US dollars for a small bowl). Would come back again and again. Also one of the reasons I rated Penang, in my experience, as the best food district on my travel.

Yelp
Getting off the flight, this was our first stop for local laksa & char kway teow(CKT). Finding this place can be a bit confusing, it used to be part of the Joo hooi cafe, but now it has its own location at 5 Lebuh Keng kwee, at the end of the street where all the tourists Q up for the famous chenduls. Infront of the stalls there were 2 stations, 1 for CKT & 1 for mixing laksa & sweets. Chow Kway Teow was excellent! Even though they did not use old fashioned charcoal, the wok hei was still very intense & aromatic. Noodle texture was fresh, springy & light, color & flavors evenly distributed. Good flavors & adequate amount of seafood (i.e. 2 shrimps). As an arrogant cantonese eater I found no faults. Assam laksa was good. This was our first assam laksa experience so kept an open mind. We usually prefer the singapore versions with intense curry & coconut flavors. This laksa def had more of a seafood/fishy flavor but in a good way, with shrimps & small bits of fish found in the broth. Also the sourness was evident which is classic assam. The presentation of the bowl was a little messy & the condiments very ordinary, yet we ate & drained the entire bowl! It was comforting, refreshing & light compared to the classic Singapore versions. Red bean cendol was excellenr! I was borned with red bean addiction disorder & this cold bowl of goodness hit the spot. It was not too sweet & quite refreshing, i m not a shaved ice fan & was glad it contained just enough ice chunks to provide the chill factor without sinking the Titanic. Overall we were very impressed by this restaurant. Its sort of a hidden gem for tourists due to its new location. This can be a blessing in disguise since the wait was minimal for us. We saw enough locals eating & getting take-outs there so always a good

Yelp
This assam laksa woefully let me down. It had practically no fish within, and the gravy was meh. I did like the chewy noodles, but they're not uncommon and aren't special as other laksa stalls have them too. Would not revisit. Such a waste of time and calories.
