Where to Eat and Drink in Oakland’s Fruitvale Neighborhood | Eater SF

"The undisputed neighborhood favorite bakery is Peña’s Bakery II, which features trays and trays of glazed conchas, crumbly biscuits, flaky empanadas, soft buns, and other pan dulce. It first opened in 1989, and the community has never stopped coming. It’s currently open for takeout daily from 8 a.m. to noon." - Luke Tsai

Google
I have been a devote customer of this location for many years! The bakery is always impeccably clean, they make the BEST pan de muertos by the way with the perfect amount of sweet, and shaved cinnamon. One of the hits of this place are tortas! They make a classic Mexican that is potatoes with chorizo, and jamón (ham and queso fresco). They come with avocado, pickled jalapeños, fresh tomatoes, crispy lettuce and red onion. In general their sweet bread is not overly sweet, I love the guava empanadas!! And as always, this place is great because of the people who work here, Sra. Mary is the chief torta maker!

Google
Arturo, the owner, and his employees are the best! If you want authentic Mexican Pan Dulce, this is the bakery/panaderia.. to go to.. each bread has its own taste! 🥐🍰🧁❤️👌👏

Google
I always come here for the sweet bread. It's so good especially the empanadas. They have a good variety of sweet bread at reasonable prices. The place seems very nice and clean. They also offer coffee milk or juice also. The ladies are super nice and respectful.

BEST EVER! HELLA GOOD FRESH PERFECTNESS. If you want the best you gota come here. I moved and I come from Richmond just to have it. They put some much love into it. Idk but its the best and I hope they never leave.

I've been enjoying Peña's pan dulce since I could eat solids. As a kid, it was my grandmother's staple, which then became my mother's. Now, On the other side of the country, no pan dulce bakery compares to Peña's. The love, time, and effort shows through each sweet. I miss this place everyday, and I can't wait to return after the pandemic.

Absolutely the best bread in our Peralta Hacienda neighborhood. Best survival pan during quarantine times. Absolutely fresh and wonderful. Thank you

Google
Pastries are cheap and yummy! Especially the raspberry coconut swirl cake thing :) The sandwiches are good too. Spicy, but with thick bread to balance it.

My family has been going to Pena's bakery for years. Bread is always fresh and tastes great!

Yelp
The pan dulce OK at best. Find a pricey for what it is. But the flavor... Just OK. And oddly, my cookie taste a bit like Carnitas? Wondering if they are cooked in the same area without proper cleaning. Very odd taste.

Yelp
Delicious Authentic Mexican Bread!! I will not eat sweet bread from anywhere else but this place!! Not even from the 2 other Peñas bakeries they have in Oakland. Only this place!! Try their chocolate conchas or powder covered cones with sweet cream inside. Super delicious. Cash or card.

Yelp
I wanted to bring some pan to my daughter's class for Dia de los Muertos. I called and was able to place an order over the phone to pick up the day of her presentation. Delicious, warm and devoured by all the kids who now know and love pan de muerto. I got myself a few conchas in the order as well and what can I say, honestly the best pan I have had in years! Thank you Yelp for pointing me here. Such a great bakery.

Yelp
They overcharge you!! I got four pieces of bread and when I asked for the receipt they hesitated and the reason why is because they overcharged me! Never coming back

Yelp
The authenticity and freshness of their baked goods are top notch, I enjoy the wide selection of cookies, filled pastries, and other sweet treats, but do have some minor issues with this particular location. Customer service is great here, cleanliness is never an issue, but I have noticed that they tend to skimp on the amount of filling that they put inside of their empanadas; they have a great flavor, they just need a good ratio of bread to fruit/custard, if it doesn't balance they tend to be too dry.

Yelp
Pan dulce pan dulce pan dulce! Ahhhh I LOVE this place! They have it all. Mis favoritas y mas! Grab a metal tray and some tongs and go crazy! I love how you can come at 7 pm (an hour before closing) and they are still fully stocked. Pink frosted cookie is a staple, cornbread is the best, conchas of course- it is all fresh. Very clean inside and pleasant staff. Muy deliciosa- pan dulce Es vida!

Yelp
This place is great AND so delicious! I was there nice and early on a Saturday and you can smell the baked goods from a block away. I had to wait a few minutes for conchas because they werent quite ready but it was truly worth the wait!!! I ate one straight out of the oven, it was perfection. The woman working there was really friendly as well. So if you need cochas I would call ahead to make sure they are ready, otherwise they have a huge selection of other items.

Yelp
Pena's Bakery offers a cornucopia of wonderful Mexican baked treats. From pan dulce to empanadas to turnovers to crossover items (snoballs, brownies, and chocolate chip cookies), every item is wonderfully baked to perfection. Having three of their locations within a mile from my house is just AWESOME. I love you like a fat kid loves cake. Yikes, better hit the treadmill.

Yelp
Pena's is nearby Taqueria Reynoso. this may also be the mothership of the other Pena on International. bsked goods are in enclosed cabinets and behind the counter. the self serve ones are the cheaper ones.(.60) eats: picked 3 at random -a pretzel looking one, a chocolate cross bun looking onee & ? all tasted a bit dry, bland, not sweet at all. the baked goods (same owner)on international were semi-sweet crumbs: -bemused service by amigo:looked like he wanted to say "what you are doing here?" -baked goods were pretty big.(behind the counter ones smaller). -guess i'll stick to the international location.

Yelp
Best pan dulce in the Bay Area . It's a small family owned business located on the corner of foothill and 34th ave . You can always count on great customer service , and awesome bread at a reasonable price (most breads are under a dollar) The empanadas are a must in this place

Rachel T.

Yelp
Peña's bakery on foothill was a disappointment bread was stale bought $ 11 worth, will not be going there again. The Peña's bakery on International bread always fresh.

Yelp
I'm basing my review off one particular item that I LOVE LOVE LOVE. I don't know what it's called but it's a light yellow sponge cake with the top criss-crossed in a diamond shape with custard. It's not too sweet and it's moist, never dry. I'll try the pan dulce some other time but I just come here to get my fix. It's part of my taco night routine with Taqueria Reynoso. Peña's provides the dessert. *Cash only*

Yelp
I was never able to get up early enough to get this stuff super hot fresh in the morning. I only made it in after work. Still, there were plenty of pan dulces to choose from. I, of course, loaded up on hella conchas. After picking up my pal from the BART station, we made a pit stop for milk (I'd forgotten to get it at Pena's) and grubbed on the conchas while sitting in Bay Bridge traffic. We made a bit of mess in the car but those Pena's conchas kept us from starving on the way into the city. Grab a tray, grab some tongs, and load up for the ride home.

Sophia C.

Yelp
Amazing! Everything I've gotten from here has been fresh and delicious! Some places have conchas that are a little stale, but the conchas from Peñas were so soft! I also love the empanadas and highly recommend picking some up if you go, because they are fantastic. The prices are also reasonable (less than a dollar for most things) so don't be afraid to try a little of everything. You won't be disappointed! Parking is a little tricky, though, since there's no lot. Just park at the Walgreens across the street. Oh, and they do accept card, though there's a small charge. The workers are bilingual (at least the ones I've talked to) so if you're an English speaker looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, don't worry about a language barrier. (Though if you know some Spanish, I encourage you to practice!)

Yelp
You'd never noticed this shop if you weren't looking for it. It's not in a business strip, it's not particularly stylish, it looks like a small family-run but not-very-interesting bakery. It is a small family-run bakery, but the unassuming setting has the best Pan Dulce in the Bay Area. For those who don't know, pan dulce is slightly sweet, slightly chewy bread/rolls, usually with sugary decorative topping. Pena's Pan Dulce is super-fresh, fluffy, lightly sweetened (and not too much!). It's what all Pan Dulce aspires to be. There's a variety of Pan Dulce types, and though they do a variety here, Pena's specialty is "conchas"; eggy rolls with colored sugar on top. They're so light and fresh they almost melt in your mouth. Great with coffee for breakfast, great as a snack, sweet enough to be a light dessert with fruit, not so sweet that it'll send you on a sugar bender.

Yelp
i didnt like pan dulce until ive tried pena's. my sister brought some home for me and ive been going back since! too bad i don't know the names of all the different types of pan dulce! this is located on a busy part of foothill and parking may be difficult during peak hours. the lady who works behind the counter is pretty friendly, i caught her dancing to the music playing in the background. i dont think she knows too much english. there were some problems with communication during my visits. thats not going to stop me from coming here though! i believe theyre closed on sundays.

Yelp
Hands down the best panaderia in the East Bay. I'm from Houston and Mexican sweet bread is HUGE there; Pena's Bakery is on par with some Mexican bakeries in Houston. Tasty, cheap and good staff service

Yelp
Place is very clean. Pan Dulce looked nice. Arrived there about 6 pm and their shelves were full of pan.. Tasted like it was baked the day before. Did not taste fresh. They're pricey. But don't mind paying top $$$ if pan is fresh, tasty and high quality

Yelp
It's the same fresh and tasty pan dulce as Peña's #2 on International Blvd. Today I went in to grab some pan (a chilindrina and a puerquito - deliciosos!) and a coffee before heading over to the little park on Fruitvale to read. The very nice woman behind the counter, apparently noticing that I had a bicycle helmet on, offered to put a piece of tape over the hole in the coffee lid so it wouldn't spill. Most people just aren't that thoughtful and it just made me appreciate Peña's even more.

Yelp
Great place to find authentic Mexican bread!!

Yelp
Huge assortment of fresh pan dulce! Something for everyone. My only complaint is that I buy too much and then I try to eat it all at once.

Claudia M.

Yelp
Place is amazing. Best coffee in the fruitvale hands down. Pastries are delicious and fresh. Tried other places in the area and they do not compare. I come here every week without fail.

Maria G.

Yelp
The best bread ever...... Of all the pena's bakery locations this one is by far the best. The bread is always super fresh. The variety is never scarce. The woman who is usually behind the counter is super cool! Although the gallon of milk is over priced and so is the chocolate Ibarra, it is convenient that they have it in stock!

T Y.

Yelp
best pan dulce ever.....piggies, ears (orejas) and conchas ..right on Foothill and family owned
