A few things. Penca is great. Penca also used to have a pork chop dish that was one of the best I’ve ever had last January (2024) their new pork dish misses the mark completely. I’ve put a pic of the old pork chop in the last photo (wink wink) if you ever want to revert to that recipe again Penca because it was BOMB. Anyways we had a lovely dinner. The esquitos corn dish is amazing, ceviche prettty good and cheese dish good too but super stringy. As mentioned the pork loin was unremarkable, especially considering the last recipe was literally to die for. Service great. Dessert: Très leches is a 10/10, by far my favorite. Old picture, but this time even better. Cocktails: Diablo was amazing.

A recent dinner at Penca in Tucson was an unforgettable experience that easily earns a five-star rating. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was perfectly charming and welcoming, setting the ideal stage for an incredible meal. Beyond the lovely ambiance, the service was truly excellent. Our waiter was incredibly attentive without being intrusive, consistently checking on us throughout the evening to ensure we had everything we needed. We kicked things off with the great house chips and salsa. Our appetizers—the Esquites and the Queso Fundido—were both amazingly tasty and savory, a fantastic start that showed off the kitchen's mastery of flavor. For our main courses, everything continued to impress. The carne asada tacos were stellar, featuring great taste and wonderfully tender meat. Our entrees were the spectacular Costilla de Res and the Chile Relleno (a definite favorite). The Costilla de Res was absolutely exceptional; the meat was tender with great flavor, perfectly complemented by the bed of amazing creamy hominy. Just when we thought it couldn't get better, dessert arrived: the house-made churros served with luscious dulce de leche and chocolate dipping sauces. They were, quite simply, to die for. If you are looking for great, upscale Mexican cuisine in Tucson, Penca is an absolute must. We can't wait to go back!

My wife and I chose Penca in downtown Tucson for her birthday dinner, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable evenings we’ve had in years. We’d seen a few online photos beforehand, but honestly, they didn’t do the place justice at all—the reality was so much warmer, more intimate, and infinitely more charming than any snapshot could capture. From the moment we stepped inside this beautifully restored 1920s building on Broadway Boulevard, the atmosphere enveloped us like a perfect embrace. It’s dark and romantic, with flickering candlelight dancing across the exposed brick walls, rich wooden accents, and cozy seating that feels both elegant and inviting. Soft lighting from vintage-inspired fixtures created just the right amount of shadow and glow, making it the ideal spot for a nice, candle-lit dinner where you can focus entirely on each other without the world intruding. The subtle hum of conversation blended with tasteful music, giving it a sophisticated yet relaxed vibe that’s hard to find—truly the perfect romantic escape in the heart of downtown. The service was nothing short of superb. Our server (Mathew?) was attentive without being overbearing, offering thoughtful recommendations and checking in at just the right moments. He guided us through the extensive agave spirits list and made sure every detail, from timely refills to pacing the courses perfectly, contributed to a seamless experience. The entire staff radiated genuine warmth and professionalism, making us feel like honored guests rather than just another table. Penca exceeded every expectation and made my wife’s birthday feel extra special. It was intimate, delicious, and utterly romantic—the kind of place you’ll reminisce about long after. We can’t wait to return soon to explore more of that incredible menu. If you’re looking for upscale Mexican dining with soul in Tucson, this is it. Highly recommended!

There were seven of us for a 7:30 pm dinner. The restaurant was busy but not packed. Service was excellent. Most of us had different taco combinations. I had the prickly pear tacos, fish tacos, and carne asada tacos. All were delicious. Everyone else enjoyed their meals The mezcalitas were delicious! Definitely worth a visit.

We went to Penca’s website before our show at the Fox to see that every reservation time slot was open so we headed straight there to eat. When we arrived they asked if we had a reservation which we did not. We were told that they were completely booked and we could not be served. The hostess was going to let us walk out the door. Instead I asked if we could sit at the bar. She said yes that was open seating. While we sat at the bar we went back on their website, clicked make a reservation and every time slot was still available. So we made a reservation for 15 mins later. We went up and showed the hostess who said she didn’t understand because they are booked full and then said the system we booked thru isn’t even a platform they use. We let her know the system we used was the one directly on their website for booking reservations. We were fine with sitting at the bar but with all the empty seats and challenges with their reservations it was a bit disappointing. We saw several other couples come in after us experience the same issue and be sat a table. Side from the obvious lack of problem solving we had a very attentive bartender who provided great service and had a window seat to watch the kitchen team who were doing a fantastic job. We ordered the ceviche as an appetizer, three tacos (pescado, Rajas y papas, and cabeza) and the steak salad. The tacos were good as was the steak salad. The steak was a little stringy and tough to chew and with the char at times it overpowered the flavor of the salad. Overall it was decent place to eat before the show. We would definitely call ahead to make a reservation if we ate there again. It was annoying that when we left there were still 3 empty tables that sat empty the entire time we were there.

The last time I was here I left a mediocre review. This time the food was on point and my server Lalo was amazing. Super knowledgeable about the drinks and food. He guided me to a great dinner. I’ll be back!

Yelp
We had a nice time at pence. It makes an impression as you walk up, under the Mexican flags and the hostess greets you on the side walk. We had a reservation and they put us at a lovely corner table against the window. It was perfect. Our server was extremely helpful and friendly, although it felt like he checked in with us a bit too often to see how things were and it chat in general. The drinks were really good. Unique flavor profile. The food was mixed for me. Chips & salsa come complimentary. We ordered queso to go with it but I didn't love it. It wasn't very dip-able. More like quesadilla cheese that was melted and I had to cut to put in my tortilla. I ordered the short rib with goat cheese hominy which was just so big and bold and after 1/4 of the dish I was tired of it and wish I ordered something else. Overall, pleasant time but wish I had different food choices. I'm glad we went but I probably wouldn't come back.

Yelp
Wow, five stars, Penca! The yummiest, freshest ingredients paired with skill and ambiance creates a phenomenal dinner experience. Our server was a delight and the drinks came out perfect, I favored the gin cocktail. This is downtown Tucsons gem for a belly warming romantic date or business meeting at the bar for drinks.

Yelp
I ordered one appetizer Bone Marrow - it was really good. ( you need to acquire the taste and know how to enjoy it LoL- but first - Tate the top part with a spoon and let the salt touch your paladar fist then en hoy by small portions. Both pieces were deliciosos ) know that this is an appetizer so one bone will bring 4 small spoons ). Entry : chile relleno : flavor/taste was good. Salsa was good ( too much salsa for my taste but that's easy just to move over to the side ) meat was good - soft and good Taste. Chile cover was to thin for my taste. I like to taste the Chile - green outer part - and combine with the inside. But overall it was good. Dessert: churros - well! For me taste those were not the bomb flavor that I was expecting on my mouth BUT putting that aside- I focus on the taste and texture and it was good with the caramel and chocolate. I will say - if you have a pre conception of flavor then remove that and be open to try a new flavor and texture for this churros. Overall those are good but you need to acquire the taste. Ambiance is good and service was excellent t for my experience. 20% service charge was match. Drink : i tried lemonade. Same as churro review. $$$ above was below $80s for one person

Yelp
We were downtown for a show at Arizona Theatre Company and decided to grab a bite at Penca first. Since we planned on appetizers, we sat at the bar. I ordered guacamole and esquites, which turned out to be a meal! Penca serves their corn tortilla chips with several fresh salsas, and I enjoyed trying different mixtures of guac and salsa, guac and esquites, and esquites and salsa. My partner ordered pozole blanco, which also was meal-sized. He enjoyed it and also tried the different salsas with chips. When we arrived, we were the only ones at the bar, and we received attentive service while we were there. The space has a blend of wood and metal finishes for a modern, sophisticated look. We'll go to Penca again when we're downtown for another show.

Yelp
Although I recommend reservations and we had one they were not needed, we were seated right away. It was not busy at 8pm when we arrived. The restaurant has a cute ambience, candles throughout every table although ours was off I asked another worker if they could turn on. We ordered the queso fundido which was really good. Unfortunately we had no plates to eat from, and our waiter could not be located not even for water refills. Got the jalisco draft beer and margarita both ok. I ordered the chile relleno stuffed with pork and my husband had the steak both delicious. The portion size is on the smaller side but expected for this type of restaurant, so no complaints on that. I was disappointed that they do not offer desserts. Overall we enjoyed the food but service was just not what we expected. I hope they can work on it. For now I don't think I would come back, due to the lack of service.

Yelp
I came here with a friend for Sonoran restaurant week a couple weeks ago and we decided to try the fixed menu. The evening started off really well with friendly service and a nice quiet atmosphere for dinner. Their outdoor patio seating is nice. We got complimentary chips and salsa, which were great. The chips weren't overly salty and the salsa had a nice flavor. The starter for the restaurant week menu was roasted carrots on cashew crema, and it was not like anything I've had before. The carrots were sweet and a mix of soft and crunch. The crema added a really nice flavor, so the dish as a whole worked really well and was probably my favorite! I chose the salad next, which was a mixed organic greens salad with an assortment of nuts and seeds. It had a hunk of a corn on the cob that was a strange addition to the salad. It seemed to be more for garnish. I didn't love the salad and didn't finish it. My friend and I both ordered the coconut poached sea bass, but there was a mixup with our orders and they forgot to make our entrees initially, so we ended up waiting over an hour and a half for our entrees! That was frustrating, but when we did finally get our sea basses, they were alright. The menu said it came with calabacitas, but it was more garnish-looking. The size of the sea bass was pretty large so it was a lot of food. It was not my favorite part of the meal, but by this point I just wanted some food! I finished the meal with the churro dessert. It came with two dipping sauces, the chocolate one I didn't like. But the churros themselves were fresh, hot, and crisp, when were great. It was a nice way to end the meal. Overall, I think this was a good restaurant week menu. The mixup with the entrees was disappointing, but it was a lot of food, and I think a good value for the $55 price.

Yelp
Penca has a European feel ambiance and is I'm the heart of downtown tucson. Has a nice open feel and seating outdoors. Lovvvveeee the hongo and tocino tacos (bacon and mushroom). Such a good combination. Perk: complimentary chips and salsa

Yelp
We had a group of 23 last night at Penca for a rehersal diner party. I can only say that everything was excellent! Individuals in my party had a variety of dishes and everyone was very impressed, starting from the chips and wonderful salsa and guacamole, to the soups and salad, the main dishes and the dessert! Everything was just delicious and the service was also excellent! We will be back!

Yelp
I had high expectations of this place. I was really underwhelmed with the flavors. The empanadas were lacking filling so the majority of the flavor was from the pastry. The pastry was good, but I really wanted to enjoy the filling and it was hard to given how little filling they had. I also tried the grilled fish taco. The homemade tortilla was really amazing - probably the best I've ever had. However the fish had no seasoning which made the taco very bland. I did love the side of grilled cactus and onions - that was the best thing I ate. I also really enjoyed their house salsas. It's a very nice restaurant with fast service and friendly wait staff. I love the vibe. I'd like to go back and try other menu items to hopefully find a flavorful experience.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place, but neither the food, the price nor the service were satisfactory. I can see this place as for a romantic date night spot, but it was so dark inside I needed to turn on my phone flashlight to know what I'm eating. I usually consider myself someone who has an adventurous palate. But I didn't enjoy the 2 entrees we ordered. Pescale en Mole Verde- the mole sauce smelt and tasted weird to me. To be fair, my friend said she liked the sauce. The fish didn't seem to be seared, at least not the skin side. The oyster mushroom was the best part of this dish. Definitely not worth $33. Costilla de Res - short-rib is alright, but the ancho sauce was sour and did not add to this dish. Hominy with goat cheese is a good idea. Esquites - this was my favorite dish of the night. Sweet corn with cojito, pickled onion, and pieces of serrano were a pleasant surprise. Service was another let-down. We were seated at the counter, which gave us a good view of the kitchen. We waited for quite a while to order, and waited for another 20 minutes after we said no dessert to get the check.

Yelp
Nice find in walk distance to parking garage and music hall. The food was amazing. Bone marrow appetizer was delicious and not something you would find everywhere. We ordered the pork chops and ribs. So good... the sauces were delicious like bourbon raisins in one and the chocolate in the mole sauce. Service was excellent. Nice bar to eat at too. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
First time we visited Penca was a year ago. We did family style and ordered a variety of items off the menu. The turkey tacos were amazing. Tried it again November of 2024 and ordered turkey and carnitas tacos this time and it was just okay. My turkey taco was all fat which confused me and the service was so slow. We got water when we sat down and never was replenished with more water. Tried it a third time in December with family and we ordered a variety of items again off the menu. The ceviche, pork chop and guacamole were good. We ordered a variety of tacos and the corn tortilla tasted funny. I couldn't eat mine. And once again the service was slow and was never replenished with water. The lighting in the place is dark so you'll need a flashlight to read the menu.

Yelp
Average food in a beautiful atmosphere with below average service. More than we wanted to pay for the amount of food we got. We came for happy hour, but they didn't even have a happy hour menu. The waiter (who was not very friendly or enthusiastic) told us the deals "off the top of his head" and FYI the drinks are all $2 off and food choices are limited. That being said, I recommend the taquitos and trying all three kinds - short rib, turkey, and potato. And chili relleno with pork.

Yelp
I had mix feelings with my experience. We sat at the bar and our bartender was inattentive, and left us flagging a server down a few times. We were not given chips until we ordered food, which I understand if you are just there for drinks but we had menus and our bartender could have asked us if we were eating before waiting 20 minutes later - after taking our order. Our drinks were yummy but small. The guac came pre-mixed, for the price again I expected fresh and customizable. As for the food, it was good but I didn't feel it was worth the price. I had the vegan chile rellano and a shroom taco. The rellano was smothered in sauce and I thought it was a bit strange that they put whole walnuts in the mixture and didn't grind it up. It felt very segmented. Overall it was an OK experience, I'm just not sure it was worth the price. My out-of-town guest did like her food.

Yelp
What a lovely night! A myriad of flavors starting with appetizers , ending with dessert and topped off with a bourbon tepache . The grilled prickly pear cactus (Nopales) and Esquites were my favorite... but I would eat everything again ( there was no wrong dish) and try more dishes. The rustic yet modern vibe with warm lighting coupled with loud fun music makes this space and vibrant to match the food and culture. Outdoor seating also available. Excellent service - friendly, attentive and he made some excellent recommendations. Very limited street parking ( free after 5pm) but there is a $5parking lot less than a minute walk away adjacent to the building.

Yelp
We had a nice meal at penca before seeing a show. Started off with a limeade and a wonderful cocktail which contained Mezcal and orange bitters. It was divine and a bit smokey. The service was very prompt and we finished more quickly than we expected. We had the Esquite corn appetizer which was good . We had a pulled pork chile relleno and a vegetarian chili relleno for our entrees as well as the nopales as a side. The vegetarian chili relleno was excellent. Very flavorful sauce. The pork Relleno had a nice red sauce and the meat was tender. One of the major hits of the evening was the homemade corn chips and the salsa was delicious. Luckily we had a table inside since it was busy. I love the way they decorate the outside with lights. They were very nice to the people outside bringing everyone blankets.

Yelp
The food was good and inventive. Carefully prepared and stylish but not overwrought. Interesting agave spirits selection. Ambiance really nice. Pretty good value for the money. I would definitely go back fir another meal.

Yelp
The Ensalada Verde is probably the best salad I've had in the downtown area. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Overall, we really enjoy the mood and decor of Penca. When we arrived we were seated quickly without a reservation, which was nice! Although, we were seated in the back near the kitchen as the only seated party in that area. It took the server staff about 10 minutes to come over citing that they didn't realize we were back there. They were friendly and took our orders. At this point we noted that there was open seating near the window and they quickly and pleasantly agreed to reseat us. This would have been our preferred spot from the getgo as the people watching and view is great! We ordered the Estados Mezcal flight and the Ceviche. This was definitely the highlight of the meal. The ceviche had a perfect lime-y flavor and the fish was fresh. The pork chop dish was okay, but didn't quite reach the level of the Ceviche. I got the short rib with the hominy cheese blend as the base. It was good, but some parts of the meat were very salty and I had to really mix it with the hominy and red chili to balance it out. Overall, despite the minor main course indifferences, we were very happy that the team at Penca was so easy to work with to ensure we had a good experience. We would definitely come back!

Yelp
The service was great and the restaurant is really cute. There is a nice patio outside as well. The cocktails were good as was the tres leche cake. The Cuarenta Casas and Jicara were both smooth. The Cuarente was more smokey while the Jicara was a little sweet. I cannot recommend eating here though. Everything we had was bland. Starting with the guacamole and beef empanadas as well as the swordfish (pescado) and short rib (costillas de res). The beef empanadas tasted like they were all potato and these were the smallest empanadas I've ever seen in my life. The swordfish tasted like it was boiled with no seasoning. The short rib, also with no flavor was so dry it was tough to chew. The guacamole was like they just mashed up avocados and didn't add anything else. We had to eat the guacamole with the salsa in every bite to give it flavor. I recommend coming for drinks and dessert and the cute interior but not dinner.

Yelp
A group of 8 friends decided to go to Penca tonight for dinner before a show at the Fox Theatre. We were quickly seated and after a few minutes the server came to the table and took drink orders. Chips and Salsas were brought to the table, along with two orders of guacamole. This was the highlight of the meal----it all went downhill from there. Two of the guests ordered the pork chop and asked that it be done on medium. Both came WELL done and were barely edible. Two of the other guests ordered Tacos and said they were not warm when they arrived. I ordered the "catch of the day" which was Halibut. The Halibut arrived so over cooked and over seared that it was borderline inedible---not what you expect for a $42 entree. Food aside, the most disappointing aspect of the meal was that fact that it took close to 45 minutes for the entrees to arrive after the appetizers. Entrees were brought one at a time; with at least 10 minutes between where the first guest received their entree and when the final guest received theirs. I want to like this place. It's a great location and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, we have no desire to return based on tonight's experience. The kitchen definitely needs to get their act together https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60950-d3976359-r947643816-Penca-Tucson_Arizona.html#

Yelp
Not our first time here and we've typically enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. This time neither was enjoyable. Bartender was completely indifferent and unfortunately served up mediocre cocktails with her side eye. Sitting at the bar, every word we spoke was listened to and observed by the kid washing and drying glassware. Creepy and unnecessary. $70 for 4 street tacos and a couple of drinks served up with attitude is excessive-especially these days.

Yelp
Random choice for dinner...and boy were we happy from beginning to the end of our meal! Started outside in patio that was very romantic and perfect on an October night! Progressed to inside in a door romantic space with a perfect view of the kitchen and bar! Started with appetizers: guacamole with at least fours salas! Each salsa was pleasing with its on flavor. Progressed to ceviche with fresh fish! The flavor was spot on. For entree we had Chile rellenos that came with its great favorable sauce! For refreshments: plenty of great drinks! The margaritas were spot on and fresh! Not sweet but perfectly tart! Restaurant also has array of sangria from sweet to tart! Blanco was perfectly balanced ! If your're looking for a perfectly relaxed romantic restaurant with lots of flavor, then this is your spot!

Yelp
Came here on a whim one night with some friends and was pleasantly surprised! They had a ton of vegan options, so we order a few appetizers to share for the table. The guac with pomegranate seeds was amazing and the chips were fresh. The vegetable platter presented very well and was fun to munch on! And my friend loved the pozole. Being right off of the street, it was surprisingly not too loud (we sat outside). And our server was attentive and nice!

Yelp
The restaurant ambience is cute, good service. Unfortunately the food/drinks were very hit or miss. I would recommend against getting the paloma for $11 or $14...it is a variation on a paloma that tastes very flavorless, a bit like a tea or kombucha. Way better cocktails elsewhere (eg. Sidecar, Kon tiki). The al pastor taco and the fish taco were $8 each and did not feel worth it. They are good tacos, don't get me wrong, but they didn't taste 3x better than tacos around Tucson for $2.50 The table next to us was a couple that shared the queso fundito. They didn't finish it and the cheese looked super thick and rich. Think the texture of melted string cheese. As I didn't try it, I can't comment on whether to get this, but just wanted to share my observation on this. Now on to the good aspects of this place. I would absolutely get the esquites. It is a bit pricey at $11 or $13, but it is delicious and generous portions (probably good for 3 people). Most other esquites I have gotten was super rich and a bit overwhelming. The ones here are the perfect balance, with some nice acidity to cut the creamy/fattyness of the aioli and cheese. It also has a nice gentle kick of heat to it. The free chips and homemade salsa was surprisingly good; I could buy a bucket of the salsa. It's got a good roasted flavor to it. The chips are also of the more sturdy variety, no breaking mid-scoop. I would absolutely come back for the esquites and chips/salsa, but probably not for the tacos/drinks.

Yelp
Made a reservation for an inside table and when we arrived, the hostess said that she couldn't find the reservation even though we had called just 10 min prior to confirm. Even after we showed the confirmation, they insisted on seating us outside. One of us ordered the pre-fixe special (side of carrots, pozole, entree, and dessert). The side of 5 carrot sticks and bowl of pozole alone took over an hour to be served (which should be ready to serve anyway), and the entree was disappointingly insipid. The server only brought the carrots after he was reminded that we had never gotten them. We ended up waiting an HOUR AND A HALF for all our entrees to be served, and noticed that people that arrived at the restaurant after us got their food first. Truly incredible considering the restaurant was not particularly busy the majority of the time we were there. Throughout this whole ordeal, the server didn't keep us updated on the situation (understaffed, problems with the kitchen, etc.) nor apologize for the wait until we were about to leave. In the end, we were offered dessert. Our party isn't particularly into sweets, and at this point, the last thing we wanted was to stay in this place any longer. We instead asked to have our one drink comped, but the best they could do was comp a side of guacamole. For a place that's looking to give an upscale vibe, we were disappointed with their attempt to compensate, and definitely felt that they did the bare minimum because they "should" given the circumstances, and not because they were genuinely apologetic. We cannot with good conscience recommend this place to anyone except our enemies. For most of us, it was our first time, and for all of us, it will definitely be our last.

Yelp
This was the surprise hit of our stay in Tucson. We had expected Tito & Pep to reign supreme, but I felt this restaurant was much better. 1. Crowd is lively and in a great spot in downtown 2. The mezcal drinks were delicious and the bar staff was excellent 3. Our food had the creativity I was hoping for in Tucson. From the garlic prickly pair appetizer to the fish Al pastor tacos, I absolutely loved the spins they had on Mexican and southwestern cuisine 4. The restaurant itself has a fun interior and we were able to be seated at the bar without a reservation or any wait time 5. The bone marrow was BOMB 6. I felt the prices were reasonable with large proportions, contradicting other reviews I would highly recommend!

Yelp
Due to business travel, I spend time in the Tucson area and came across this restaurant in the downtown area. Overall experience was very good and food was exceptional. Primarily Mexican food with some flair. Nice ambience, cool decor, and friendly service. Started my dinner with their posole and a shrimp taco made with tortillas they make themselves. Ended with their vegan chile relleno. Give them a try and enjoy!

Yelp
Very sad experience. Been here three times and the first two I was not impressed at all, but I gave it about two years and went back tonight for dinner thinking maybe they have improved. The "filet...chefs cut" for $42 was disgusting and not a filet mignon at all. No flavor whatsoever and didn't appear to be grilled...maybe they use a panini press for grill marks. Looked and tasted like a butterflied top sirloin that should cost $14-$20. Chips and salsa were good, salsa had a very good heat and flavor. One of us ordered the filet and they brought out the sea bass by accident...that happens so no big deal. Apps were decent but not impressive. Asked the server 3 times to split the bill since we were two separate couples and she couldn't figure it out. Server said sea bass was a whole fish, but came out as a 6oz fillet that tasted like it was microwaved. Overall very disappointed, drinks were made well but food was not good at all. Menu is also very limited and basic, so you would think they could perfect it, but that didn't happen. They comped us a tres leches which was so dry we didn't even touch it. Not worth the price, would go back for drinks and apps only, but definitely not for any main courses.

Yelp
We went to Penca for my birthday, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is cozy and clean! We had a table by the window, and it felt like we were sitting in our little part of Mexico. We were greeted warmly, and champagne waited at our table. Our server was excellent and provided explanations and some recommendations. We tried the guacamole, salsaas, and esquites. All were delicious! The esquites were creamy with a bit of spice. The guacamole was flavorful, and each salsa was savory with a unique spice blend. We loved each one! I had the chili relleno; my husband had the pescado, costilla, and carnitas tacos. He loved each one! My chili relleno was delicious! We had the churros for dessert, and they were served warm with a delicious chocolate and caramel sauce. Divine!! We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Be amazed by the clean, precise flavors of the restaurant with no sign. Yep pulling up you'll note there is no sign to reassure yourself you have arrived at the right place, instead, a glass awning over the door, and tables of happy folk under the soft glow of patio lights zigzagging across the sky, happy that they were smart to make a reservation for the best fine dining Mexican with Euro kitchen flare that Tucson can offer, and to date that I've tried. Hubby opts for more casual dinners but enjoyed this upscale hipster establishment. While the menu is focused, hubby and I enjoyed every offering we selected, and artfully presented: Cocktail: Chose the JíCARA bc mezcal...you know, when in Mexico City (Rome) ;) Elote-infused mezcal, maguey sap, lime juice, orange bitters beautiful on a large cube with charred corn husk, was a well balanced smoky mezcal sour. Great accompaniment sipping through courses. Cast iron skillet chorizo verde Queso Fondido with roasted serrano & thick chewy tortillas, like eating the best cheesy chorizo burger topped with thick layer of melted monterrey? likely not, but shows you what I know?! A hefty serving for two but with a duo of lighter tacos, for one of our mains, we were blissfully stuffed. The thick house tortilla chips came a little late to the game, served when the Queso came out instead of with the cocktail, but a loosely chunky, smoky salsa, so satisfying and tasty, while competing alongside the Queso, sadly left too many behind argh.. would not have been the case up front when you arrive ready to munch. Tacos w/house chewy corn tortillas: Beer braised Lengua w/salsa verde & Carnitas w/avo tomatillo salsa. The side pickles were lightly tart but the wafer thin carrots have super carrot flavor, their brightness so intense. Tacos are small, a good 3 bites each but packed with tons of flavor no less. You'd need 3-4 to be full. The side of rice we ordered came out as roasted poblanos instead, and the Queso so filling, we didn't miss it. The poblanos which were on the spicier side got comped but with so much food, we only managed a few bites. Onto the Bone-in Chuleta Entrada pork chop, pumpkin mole with squash and apples and grilled scallion chochoyotes, new on me, had to ask. The green speckled crispy fried masa discs was the most bland item on the table, but added an unusual starch element to the dish that I appreciated. Chop was a good inch+ thick, so juicy yet charred nicely, we easily split it between 2 with plenty of protein, and the favorite for both of us. Mole was not too thick or cloying and just enough to get me through half of our shared chop. Coffee: Surprise French press! Server said it was drip since no espresso. It's a special sourced Guat-Hond? local bean, blended for them. One pot is plenty for 2 and only $3. No low-sugar option, too full anyway, maybe next time on dessert ;) Server was pleasant and as it got busier harder to track but not to the point of lack of service. Yes, you need reservations during the week. Ours on a Thursday 5PM and by 6PM was a packed house. Chose an outside table and can't wait to set camp again outside at the restaurant with no sign, oh and apparently they have a cocktail bar around the corner, again don't look for a sign but an orange dragon and there are tunnels underneath that connect to the churches. Sounds sinister but if anything like our dinner, it will be a true blessing ;) !!

Yelp
What a cool restaurant! The outdoor seating area is beautiful, but the real fun is inside. There is so much history to the building and fixtures inside. The back room with spices and pickled jars is a great area for a photo! The cuisine is considered "Mexico City" with some other influences as well. I highly recommend the guacamole and salsa and esquites (spicy but so delicious!) The red sangria was also very good and not overly sweet. Overall I would come back. Definitely try and have a reservation on busier days, although they have bar seating for walk ins.

Yelp
I've come here to update my review on "Penca" as I truly feel this place deserves 5 stars. Everything in my previous review still stands - the food, the drinks, and the atmosphere are all wonderful. I still order the Diablo drink whenever it's on the menu (menu changes seasonally which I think is great!). I also love what they've done to the patio over the last two years - the string lights, plants, and little white flags hanging above really give a romantic feel. I've heard a few people say "I went there when it first opened but I wasn't crazy about it". I am here to tell you that the owners, chefs, whoever it is making decisions, have taken your feedback and improved this restaurant year after year (my fiance was one of those people and now he recommends Penca all the time!). Penca is a go-to for me whenever we want a date night or have guests in from out of town. I've been here countless times and never had a bad experience. It can be hard to find more "upscale" Mexican restaurants but Penca truly delivers.

Yelp
I would likely give it 4.5 stars, so I rounded up because my wife and I had a lovely dining experience there. The food had good flavors with a clean finish, The hominy soup was delicious. Ceviche just OK, but we're in the desert. The tacos were excellent. The wine list was good and reasonably priced. We are looking forward to going back and trying some of the other entrees.

Yelp
Fair at best. Generally they were trying too hard. Light on proportions for fairly unremarkable food; sorry to say. Nothing bad; just not worth the price of admission

Yelp
Ambiance: Romantic intimate indoor area and cool outdoor area that's on the sidewalk. Service: Efficient and personable. Our server was great. Food: I've tried all the different types of tacos and the ceviche and unfortunately, bland flavors without anything outstand and my visits were often more disappointing than not. Overall, I really wanted to like this place as the location was great as was the ambiance but the food was passable and more expensive that I would have liked. Would pass.

Yelp
This place used to be so good but it's gone downhill. The tuetano and costillas was completely inedible and the bar had no idea about drink ingredients. Waitstaff used to be caring and knowledgeable but now they don't know anything about Sonoran food. The owner Patricia is extremely rude to her staff in front of customers. I've witnessed her belittling waitstaff on multiple occasions. Dessert used to be good but now it's lackluster. Always seems to be a new waitstaff and manager because no one can stand working there. The restaurant is pretty but thats the only appealing thing.

Yelp
We heard great things about this restaurant while in town this past weekend. We had a reservation at 8 and got there about 30 minutes early thinking we might be able to get a table sooner. We sat at the bar, which was great, ate chips had some drinks and the bartender kept us entertained. Unfortunately, our 8 reservation came and went and before you know it we got a table at 8:15. The ambiance was good, food was ok. Our bartender was great, our waiter was trying but nothing seemed to be working from the moment we came in until the end. I think I'll try it again next time we are in town and give it another try since it came highly recommended. Sometimes you have to give it another try :)

Yelp
Let me start with the service was great, our waitress was nice, attentive and made sure any questions we had were addressed. We started with a flight of mezcal, the Favoritos, chips and salsa. Now for the part where the meal went downhill. We ordered the fish tacos, pozole, empanadas, nopales and calabacitas. The pozole had no flavor, you could tell the turkey was added after the fact and was rubbery and gross. The empanadas were supposed to be potato and beef. 2 out of 3 had very little to no beef. They were over cooked where the outside was hard and dry. The fish in the tacos tasted old to the point that I only ate 1 out of the 2 tacos ordered because I was concerned I would get sick. The nopales were slimy and tasted like crappy jar ones. Only things that were palatable was the chips and salsa, and the calabacitas.

Yelp
Cute intimate date night approved. Food was spot on delicious. We will return! I want to sit outside when it's warmer although they do offer blankets for the patio which is awesome!

Yelp
I don't know the whiners here are talking about... This place is great! The food is very good--an enlightened take on Mexican cuisine--very creative but rooted in authenticity. We were told by our server, who was great, BTW, that a lot of the recipes are inspired by the woman owner's grandmother. This not your typical Sonoran or TexMex Mexican food. I love that stuff, but this is a notch or two or three above! I had eaten here once or twice before and each time was impressed by the food and the cocktails. We are visiting from Sacramento, and if we had a restaurant like this in Sacramento, I would be going there once a week! We had a late lunch, and decided to share the esquite, or elote starter, a roasted vegetable salad (we were trying to figure out what the delicious little red-skinned roasted morsels were in the salad along with squash and carrots were, and they turned out to be radishes!) and shared a mushroom-stuffed chile relleno. We are not vegans, but the meal was perfect! I thought the prices were very reasonable considering how expensive a lot of restaurants are these days. A bonus was we had a $40 off voucher from TucsonFoodie.com! My iphone was running low on juice so I explained to the server that I was concerned my phone would die before I could show him the online voucher and he was very cool and helped me authorize it. We will definitely be back next year (with another $40 voucher!)

Yelp
This was my first time coming back to Penca since 2019 so I took it in completely. The space is the same, small and homey, good to see a new outside street seating available. Menu wise I ordered the guajolote tacos without chipotle crema (I'm df) side of the arroz poblano con elote and a sangria roja to drink. Sangria roja was divine, strong taste, dry but perfectly sweet! The rice was amazing such great home cooked taste. Tacos were okay, the guajolote was a bit on the dry side no real taste to it, perhaps the crema would of helped but in my instance without it they were quite bland. The best part of them were the homemade tortillas. The chips and salsa you get are delish-salsa is just right sweet and savory with a little kick to it. Overall would return but not for these specific tacos.

Yelp
Service is none existent. I had to flag down the bar personnel to place an order. Sat and waited at least 15-20 minutes to get services. Flies everywhere for outdoor seating. Fish was bland with no flavoring. Dessert was a 20 minute's wait. It's not worth the wait. Missing side orders. Do not recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Great food fresh ceviche, best restaurant I've eaten at in Tucson and by far the best Mexican food. Parking is a bit of a pain but well worth enduring downtown.

Yelp
It was a good experience... I have to say that the food needed salt. The cocktails were good and the atmosphere was nice. The chairs were a little uncomfortable. All in all we had a good time. I cannot give it a honest five star review but we would come back.

Yelp
We ordered the fish tacos, rajas tacos and chili relleno. It was really delish. Would have given it 5 stars but all dishes including salsa lacked salt. Ambiance is really cool. Nice vibes
