Penelope's Coffee & Tea - Review - Embarcadero - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Penelope Coffee & Tea in Rincon Center (with another location in Foster City) really wants you to know about the womelette. Posters of the omelette, waffle, and tater tots crossover are plastered on the windows, and an entire section of the menu is dedicated to it. But it’s far from the best thing at this breakfast-only coffee shop. Ignore what’s essentially a slightly crusty waffle-shaped omelette and focus on dishes like the straightforward cheddar omelette and the Belgian Nelly Waffle topped with Nutella. The premade breakfast burritos are also solid—they’re quickly warmed up until the cheese gets gooey. Coffee and tea-based drinks are just fine, from pour overs to fruity teas topped with gummy bears. There’s plenty of seating and a generous amount of outlets for taking your laptop out—just be sure to bring a pair of headphones if you can’t work to Top 40. Food Rundown photo credit: Patrick Wong Womelette While we can appreciate the novelty, this breakfast concoction doesn't work. It lacks the chewiness of a waffle, the egginess of an omelette, and the crispiness of tater tots. We'd recommend skipping and getting the separate components here. photo credit: Patrick Wong Breakfast Burrito You'll definitely find better, but these are solid. They're decently cheesy, and the version with chicken sausage is generously filled with meat. We wish there was more eggs inside, though. At $7.95 each, these are also one of the more affordable breakfast burrito options in the city. photo credit: Patrick Wong Strawberry Nelly Waffle The waffle is a little dry, but the heavy drizzle of Nutella and handful of fresh strawberries helps a lot. If you're looking for a sweet breakfast, this is a safe choice." - Patrick Wong

Came here with my boyfriend to work and such a great place! Good: - Easy ordering, nice staff with great recs - The coffee is so good! I liked the mocha - The Womlette's were so unique - we had the apple sausage and bacon one - the unique part is that the meat is baked into the waffle itself - There are outlets and plentiful seating - so it was a great place to be working from and felt like a really calming location so the ambiance was good for focus time Bad: -No bathroom that I found Overall stayed for hours here and would have longer if there was a bathroom inside too!

Google
Nice selection of breakfast burritos with a tater tot side, shaped like a waffle. Would try a womelette next time if I’m staying in the area.

Ordered 2 of the hickory smoked bacon burrito, both pictured. It should be called an egg burrito. There’s next to no bacon, at first I thought it was forgotten. But it’s just tiny specks of it and you can’t taste the flavour of bacon at all. The hash was cold, as if it was made long before the burritos and there was a hair on my hash. I would never order from here again.

Extremely disappointed. This was my go to place for coffee when I needed it. Much preferred to give my money to Penelopes over the Starbucks nearby. I always order the same thing (specialty latte, no additions), and it's always $7.00 or less. Already expensive but that's life these days. I ordered my same order today and was charged $8.95!!! That's before tip which I usually do 20-25%. When I checked their website ($6.30) and online ($7.30) ordering they were both cheaper. Not sure if this was a new change made today or if I got bamboozled. Either way, they lost a customer 😕

Google
TLDR: stale croissants but decent coffee I had two croissants and one wild berry iced latte. The berry latte was nice and not too sweet, I enjoyed the drink. The croissants were stale and not flaky at all. At almost $5 a piece, I would hope they would be fresh croissants.

Google
Great little spot with a cozy vibe. The Greek coffee was amazing—strong, smooth, and authentically made. You can tell they know what they’re doing. Friendly staff too. I’ll definitely be back!

Google
*Using someone else’s photo* I ordered The Bacon Womellette. A pile of green onions lay on top of a burnt middle, flavorless, hard bacon bits waffle. It came with two triangles of toast (not sure why they thought bread with bread would be a good pair) and a packet of sour cream. The chai coffee was good. The service at 7:30am was a bit slow, seeing how the omelet was burnt in the middle may be because they have a lot of orders and short staffed. I would like to try the other items on the menu, maybe this morning’s order was not a good day. They offer catering services on DoorDash and Ezcater.

Google
Extremely fast. Service is friendly. Coffee is just okay but worth the quick convenience. $6.50 for a medium cap with soy milk.

Yelp
What's better than quick service + really yummy coffee? This place have never missed for me. I wish I found it sooner. It would have saved me from being late to work on so many occasions. The staff is warm and friendly. Every visit, I'm greeted by a genuine smile, even on the rainiest days, they are still so happy to help. Every drink l've tried so far is delicious. If I have a request, they make it just like I ask. The pastries are really yummy too. The French berry toast is my faves. I love this place! I will continue coming here until I can't anymore!

Yelp
Service is grand! I think the food is mediocre. The burrito iwrapping taste and feel stale. I got the meat one. It's ultra cheesy and at $8 o expert more but it is clean inside which I give it a bump in rating. Thasuve for the burrito is like ranch chipotle it's ok The London fog is ight. Wish I got a chocolate croissant instead. But I know I'd be back! It's convenient in my area.

Yelp
Been ordering Sunday breakfast for months. Always hot, correct, and delicious. Thank you!

Yelp
The French Berry Toast and Lillian Latte did not disappoint! The Veggie Womlette was saved for last as all good things are. The staff was friendly and attentive. There was a morning rush and they handled it well.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop with tons of options!! Liked the interior and it was a calm setting. The staff was super nice too! The avocado toast was good but could've had better presentation and a couple of toppings for the price it was ($11.95). I got the Penelopes Samoas with oat milk and boy was it sweet! I should've expected it but personally it was too sweet for my liking. Overall a decent place for a quick brunch!

Yelp
I don't often get the chance to enjoy coffee here, but when I do, it's always a pleasure to see familiar faces like Claudia, Juan, and George. Since they first opened near my office, their warm and friendly attitude has remained unchanged. Their dedication and friendliness are not only evident here but also in their other ventures, like Nick the Greek and Monkey Sandwich. They are truly the reason I keep coming back.

Yelp
Subpar tasteless cappuccino. The veggie womeltte was shabbily prepared. One side of is it was burnt and ingredients were not fresh.

Yelp
New local favorite Penelope's Coffee and Tea is a block from my office, but I had not stopped by until today when a colleague suggested we share a burrito. He had been there and knew what he wanted to order. I do not remember the name of the burrito, but it had eggs and sausage in it and came with a spicey and delicious sauce on the side. While they were preparing our order, I scanned the coffee menu and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of options. Their Brazilian Amber caught my eye, and made a mental note to return for a cup at my earliest convenience. I will let you all know what I think of Brazilian Amber, but let me tell you that the burrito was delicious!   Penelope's Coffee and Tea is a block from my office, but I had never stopped by. The tables and chairs were clean and well-maintained, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. The employees were also friendly and helpful, and they made sure that we had everything we needed. I'm glad I finally made it to Penelope's. It's a great spot for a quick and tasty breakfast or lunch. And if you're looking for a good cup of coffee, they've got you covered.

Yelp
A new café option in the FiDi that isn't Starbucks or Peets. Huge coffee drink menu and some made-to-order food items. Appreciate the ample seating and chill vibe. Meat Lover's Womelette: No, a womelette is not a baby wombat! It's an egg omelet cooked in a waffle iron with bacon, ham, cheese and tater tots. A creative way for a tiny little café to offer all day breakfast. I think I like this more than a regular omelet since there's a lot of more crispy surface area. Pairing with some sourdough toast was nice. Though felt like it could use a little more food since I was still a tad hungry afterwards. Tella Cream Waffle: Sometimes you just want breakfast-for-lunch and sometimes that breakfast just happens to be covered in Nutella, ice cream and whipped cream! Despite all that, it wasn't overly sweet. The thin drizzles of Nutella were just right to accent the fluffy fresh out of the waffle iron waffle. The ice cream was solidly frozen, so didn't melt all over the place. Pretty filling, so I don't know how people could eat a proper meal *and* then have this for dessert; glad it was my only dish! Penelope's Samoas: I love sweet coffee drinks and this was definitely sweet! Had a nice caramel and chocolate and coconut flavor, like the eponymous cookie. The toasted coconut shreds on top of the whipped cream was nice a touch, though it became weird texture when drinking it after they sank. Appreciate the creativity.

Yelp
This is a cute place tucked away in the Rincon Center that I passed by many times and finally decided to stop by with a friend. I ordered Lilian latte that had a flower earl grey tea and also a pastry (can't remember which one). What I remember the most is how friendly and jovial the folks were in the shop were and that the tea was very nice and smooth. This is a great place to grab a quick drink and dessert to eat out on the patio chairs in the center. I would definitely come here again on another sunny day in San Francisco!

Yelp
I've been searching for a coffee shop in my neighborhood (that isn't Philz or Blue Bottle) to spend time at on the weekends and I'm so glad I found Penelope's! The coffee shop is pretty spacious with plenty of seating. There are also a few outlets scattered throughout, so I wasn't worried about not being able to charge my laptop. There's also free wifi (ask the staff for the password). I believe they also have a bathroom, which also has a code to get in. The staff is also incredibly warm and friendly. They have a pretty extensive food and drink menu. They have a lot of coffee and iced tea options with unique flavors. I already know I'll be back to try their different iced teas during the summer. I personally got an iced Party at the Beach iced tea. It was really flavorful and refreshing, but a bit on the sweeter side. Overall, I enjoyed my drink and would definitely come back to try others.

Yelp
TL:DR; I would die for that Lillian latte and what excellent service they have! We went for their opening day where we were all able to try one drink and one food item of choice. That latte was AMAZING--will be back next week when I'm in the office to grab that. My coworkers got the wombelette (sp??) and I got the turkey panini. They both slapped and the flavor combo was amazing. Can definitely see that egg waffle being the hot commodity here. We met the owner and he was very kind! Owned by him and his brothers. Also met the SMM, James who was very kind as well. Looking forward to being a regular here since it's close by. Cute interior! In FiDi, so street parking.

Yelp
I've been here a few times so far and I am obsessed! I love sweet coffee and the person helping me knew their iconic Lillian Latte would be perfect for me!! I'm usually not the biggest fan of lavender but it was so good. I also got to try their meat lovers womelette (an omelette made in a waffle maker), lol it was interesting but I enjoyed it! So happy to see a new coffee/breakfast place near my building!

Yelp
I ordered a work breakfast from Penelope's through EZcater delivery. This was one of the few businesses that offered more of a working breakfast with individual servings (vs a big cooked platter of eggs or something that would have been more messy). The process of ordering was very easy, the delivery was right on time (8am on a Wednesday in September). I got 8 orders each of yogurt/granola/fruit, pastries, and quiche. Cost was $14 for the food, $213 total with tax/tip/fees. Yogurt - 3.5 stars, fine. Pastries - 2.5 stars, these were quite dry. Quiche - 4 stars, nicely made with a buttery crust, but it arrived cold. 10 minutes at 300F in the toaster oven and it was perfect.

Yelp
Pricey but worth it. Loved the sourdough toast, Greek yogurt, and "womelettes". Casual atmosphere and friendly service.
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
Refuses to sell turkey or hard boiled eggs. They have a giant pile of both but won't sell them without bread or waffles. No gluten free options which some of us cannot eat (gluten = wheat). Beyond rude given i offered to pay anything for their food and they have it laying on their counter but won't sell it without something I'm allergic to.

Yelp
Come support your local family owned coffee shop! Grand opening today! In celebration they're offering 1 drink + 1 food item off their menu till 2pm for all customers! Great service and their Lillian latte ( Espresso shot with Lavender and French vanilla) and their Chicken Apple w/ Spinach Womeltte was delicious! https://penelopescoffee.com/assets/menu.pdf

Yelp
Penelope's is a local gem! I am so happy they opened a location in San Francisco near the Salesforce Tower - only 3 short blocks away! They offer an amazing breakfast and drink selection - great place to stop by to get the day started right. - 5/5 Food quality and taste - 5/5 friendly service - 5/5 drink selection and taste - yummy Greek coffee! - 5/5 ambiance and cleanliness - great place to work from - 5/5 for pricing! Very reasonable for SF for quality Love Penelope's and highly recommend anyone working in the area to come pay a visit!

Yelp
Solid cafe with a unique menu in San Francisco Total gem in the cityscape of San Francisco. Offering an inventive menu, it catches one's attention right away. I had the unique pleasure of trying the "Womelette" - a waffle-formed omelette filled with crunchy bacon and tater tots. Super yummy! The bear claw I ordered was flaky, sweet and hit the spot perfectly. Coffee was well made and yummy, lots of options and flavors for customization. Proximity to numerous offices in the city is a major plus point, making it an ideal pit stop for busy for a quick caffeine fix or a lunch meal. Overall, Penelope's Coffee combines comfort, innovation and convenience in one package, making it a must-visit spot in San Francisco.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop with lots of space inside. Their drink and food selection is really unique as they have items like womelette (omelette in the shape of a waffle) and as my friend called it, a "wanini" (panini in the shape of a waffle). They clearly specialize in waffles, as many of their items are waffle-themed and shaped! Their drink flavors are also special too. I tried the shortcake specialty drink and thought it was good. The employee was really nice and was really patient with me as I took my order since there were so many intriguing items on the menu that I took longer to order. Plus, she was super helpful in answering my questions about the menu. Definitely would want to visit again if I am ever in the area again!

Yelp
I decided to take chance and stand in line for almost an hour for Penelope's big grand opening. I'll tell you that this place did not disappoint. I got a free panini sandwich and fruit flavored green tea for my wait. They have a wide selection of drinks and cafe items. The have items here that are pretty unique, such as their womelettes (basically waffle/omelette twist), avocado toast to name a few. Drinks here are pretty cool too with their Gummy Bear tea and Cookie Monster. I got the Kosta Kosta iced tea which was super delicious, not too sweet like other fruit tea places but still very flavorful. This place is definitely not your average Starbucks. A place worth visiting time and time again. This will be my new breakfast joint which so happens to be just 300 yards from my office.

Yelp
Dined in house for breakfast. It was quiet, so I was able to get some work done while having breakfast. The burrito was delicious. I absolutely loved the Lillian coffee drink. I had that in two different day

Q L.

Yelp
I loved it here. Claudia took my order and was absolutely lovely and extremely kind. I felt very welcome here and the food was alright in my opinion. Once I placed my order, the cook immediately started making my food. Felt like I was playing Overcooked with the cook being so speedy. I ordered a bacon womelette and a caramel macchiato. Everyone was friendly and Claudia really knew the menu inside and out. I would be back for the vibes. The coffee was pretty good too! The location was clean and spacious.

Yelp
Love this little cafe! So many delicious and healthy options, great coffee, great atmosphere, great service and very clean. Also till sept 30 you'll get a free drink of your choice with a burrito. So worth it! Burrito is a good size and only $7 I had an iced caramel macchiato and it was yummy!
google avatar

Jona M.

Yelp
One of the only breakfast places open early enough for breakfast in SOMA. No table service, but you can order at the counter and there are tables you can use. Food is delicious and very healthy. Their womelettes (waffle/omelette dish) are yummy, nutritious without being horribly heavy at all. The pour over coffee was also very good and they even serve Greek coffee!

Karen B.

Yelp
I was in SF for a conference and Penelope's was right around the corner from my hotel. It turned out to be a very cute little coffee shop with the most amazing "womelets"!! I got the classic, hashbrowns, eggs, bacon, cheese, all made into a waffle!! Topped with sour cream and green onions! It's a must-go place for me now!

Nancy M.

Yelp
Recently visited SF and was looking for a good coffee place that offers options in coffee sizes, which was very hard to find, but this place offered that. I like to have options in sizes and not be limited to one size. We tried the Lillian latte and Penelope's Samoa and both were really good but my favorite was the Lillian latte. Definitely a place to try. It was so good we went back the 2nd day for coffee.

High Fidelity Entertainment - C.

Yelp
The oatmeal was served in a coffee cup and was instant oatmeal. The egg was cooked kn a waffle iron and was tough to chew. The waffle was almost like a hotel. Make your own waffle, which costs $11. I would not recommend this place.
google avatar

Salleha C.

Yelp
The staff are SO kind and welcoming! I was hesitant on their most popular latte, as I'm not a huge lavender fan and they so sweetly offered to swap it out for free if I didn't enjoy it. I ended up loving it, it has a great balance. The French toast is divine- fresh and full of flavor. I highly recommend for a quick brunch or coffee stop.
google avatar

Yelp
came here once for coffee and enjoyed it. until i came yesterday to see a lady behind the counter with a ponytail yelling at a young male employee with a black hat. she yelled at him to hurry up and she and two other employees stood there doing nothing. it left a sour taste in my mouth and i ended up leaving with nothing. won't be back.

Oscar F.

Yelp
Great service and excellent coffee/pastries. Was able to enjoy my mornings here even though it seemed pretty quiet.

Rey D.

Yelp
I was in the area and missed their grand opening maybe a year ago. I ordered the breakfast burrito with bacon and drop coffee. It was pretty fast. The burrito looked kinda small but hey, when I bit into it, that bacon was wow. Yes.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious breakfast and coffee! The fruit was fresh and the waffle/French toast was cooked perfectly. I got some pastries to go and I can't wait to try them as well. Staff was very friendly. Would absolutely go back
google avatar

Robbie s.

Yelp
Dropped in for a quick coffee. Pumpkin spice latte was overdosed with sugar. Fresh waffles with berries tasted like dry cardboard!! If you are looking for healthy choices try somewhere. Staff were nice though.

Danielle B.

Yelp
Food and service was amazing! This was a cute little spot to grab a quick bite to eat before hitting the city for our adventures!

Adrian L.

Yelp
I love the food here. And people working there were so kind. It's one of the best places to get breakfast
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
The coffee here is SO good. Menu is extensive as well. Everything is healthy. Love it. Great location.

Billie N.

Yelp
Omelet was great! The waffle omelet was great too but I wish they were a bit bigger... But overall it was very good. Glad that they opened early cuz we were STARVING at 7:30 am lmao

Claire K.

Yelp
i ordered a large amount of food from ezcater for an event and the turkey sandwiches, cupcakes and cheesecakes were very good but the quiche were all cold, and i ordered a box of hot tea but what i got was a box of hot water and 10 tea bags (this was $35+ tax & tip). overall the food was really good and i would recommend their sandwiches and desserts but would not recommend what's labeled as the "box of hot tea". the quiche is actually really good if you warm it up but because this was for an event and i ordered so many i didn't have the capacity to heat them up.
google avatar

Norm D.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and fresh food. Omelette's are made in a waffle maker - very fun and different. Friendly staff. The place was not too busy on a Sunday morning, but space is limited. Expect "normal" wait times for the made-to-order food. Very nice spot.

Zee C.

Yelp
Finallyyyyy a mom and pop coffee shop near my work that's open early and serves breakfast items! I get to work around 7am and most places don't open until 8 or 9. I'm obsessed with the Lillian latte (lavender vanilla) and will get it every time! Tried a few of their other lattes and they weren't as good as the Lillian. I also love their chicken apple sausage breakfast burrito. Service is always super fast and also friendly. Prices are a little steep but I'd rather support a small business than Starbucks or Peet's any day!

Stephanie H.

Yelp
I casually passed by this on my way to work and decided to look it up online. The reviews and pictures were actually very intriguing. I went in and ordered the Bacon Womlette and the Iced White Mocha. The Womlette was so good!! The Iced White Mocha was delicious too. Definitely had to say it was better than Starbucks Iced White Mocha. The staff were super friendly as well. Will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Adrian C.

Yelp
I have only been once and not for a great reason but I can say the doughnuts are excellent and I tried the Strawberry Shortcake Latte - I was a bit afraid but pleasantly surprised. I try to not drink my calories and I would be torn between the doughnut or the latte.

Yelp
Great addition for coffee, etc down town, local family owned

Raechal D.

Yelp
Foster city Employees who work there don't care maintaining there food and drinks I live close to that location so it is my go to place to get coffee for my convenience but not happy with there service

Yelp
Cute, bright new cafe with super friendly service! A variety of drinks as well as food options. Opens early too.

Yelp
