Why Adelaide Is Australia’s Most Exciting Food and Wine Destination

"The Grange is a heritage-listed Shiraz blend made at Penfolds Magill Estate, a vineyard property at the foot of the Adelaide Hills that dates to 1841, nearly as old as the city itself. It is a paragon of Australian winemaking, a powerful but controlled show horse, and its high accolades include five perfect 100-point scores since 2008 from influential critic Robert Parker. It sells for $700 a bottle at the cellar door." - Travel + Leisure Editors

A Must-Visit Experience! We visited Penfolds Magill Estate today and had a truly unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm hospitality. The estate is beautifully maintained, blending rich history with modern elegance. Our lunch was absolutely exceptional, every dish was thoughtfully prepared, perfectly paired with Penfolds’ iconic wines, and served with impeccable attention to detail. The staff were knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely passionate about what they do, which added so much to the overall experience. Whether you’re a wine lover or just looking for a special day out, Penfolds Magill Estate is a must-visit in South Australia. Highly recommended 👌we’ll definitely be back!!

This is a world-class vineyard with one of the longest history in Australia. When people talk about the best red wines in Australia, they always mention it's from South Australia. In South Australia, Penfolds is probably the most famous vineyard. It's my first visit to Penfolds today. It's so beautiful that I have taken photos as much as possible to record everything that I saw. Will be back again for their Magill Estate Kitchen as they offer one of the best dining experience in town.

We arrived at the Penfolds cellar door at 5:30pm, when they were already closing up, but Tamara’s warm welcome turned what could have been a missed opportunity into one of the highlights of our day. She graciously offered us a wine tasting while we waited for our dinner reservation at the restaurant, and her patience, deep wine knowledge, and genuine passion for sharing Penfolds’ story truly shone through. Tamara has that rare mix of professionalism and generosity that makes you feel instantly at home. She’s not just pouring wine, she’s pouring her heart into the experience. A true hospitality superstar, and a credit to the Penfolds name. Thank you, Tamara, for making our evening unforgettable! 🍷

My first visit to Penfolds Magill, and what a great visit it was. Every person who worked from the bar to the restaurant was so accommodating, polite and very entertaining. Stand-out was Daneilo from restaurants. You could tell he enjoyed working there and it really showed in his engagement with customers. And of course the wine was tasty. Haha Thank you. We will be back again soon.

Amazingly this place is the real deal diligently across the board, Penfold wines speaks volumes in aspects of fine wines with outstanding quality in more ways than one. They say a fine wine aged in time ? Wine improves with age. The older I get, the better I like it."

If you're in Adelaide, a visit to another exceptional wine cellar from Penfolds is a must. This renowned establishment offers an impressive selection of wines that showcase the region's rich viticultural heritage. With its beautifully designed cellar door, knowledgeable staff, and immersive tasting experiences, you'll have the perfect opportunity to explore Penfolds' iconic labels as well as some lesser-known varietals. It's not just a place to sample fine wines; it's an experience that deepens your appreciation for the art of winemaking. Don't miss out on this gem during your stay in Adelaide!

Great experience with the cellar tour and wine tasting. Locky, our tour guide is quite knowledgeable and answered all our questions. The place has a lot of interesting history. Definitely worth the time.

Yelp
Made reservations during our stop over in Adelaide and glad we did. Beautiful setting, great staff to compliment the fantastic wine and delicious food. Don't pass up on the burrata with figs and onion jam.

Yelp
It is difficult to find anything to criticize anything about this restaurant. The service was stellar (prompt, unassuming), the food was fresh, offering quite a variety of fare for every price point, the wine was delightful, and the views - oh my!! I would recommend Magill Estate for a lunch with the girls, a leisurely romantic outing, or frankly any occasion. Dress is smart and be sure to make a booking ahead of time.

Yelp
Had brunch at this place. Love the interior and atmosphere, but food is nothing to shout about. Personally, it's not bad, but it's not extraordinary too and on the pricier end. Would go again cause it's such a lovely place.

Yelp
Outstanding service to accompany the magnificent surroundings with a beautiful view over looking city of Adelaide. My choice of light lunch was San Choy Bow accompanied by a Tasmanian white wine - perfect on a hot day.

Yelp
Update 28/7/16 Dear oh dear, everytime I come here it gets worse! This time they forgot the wine (which is the whole point of the place!) with our amazing tasting platter. This place has gone from amazing to average. Still I'd come back 100 times for food, location and view!!! Heaps of staff but poor service. Update 6/16:- Gone from good to not so good to bad! Way overstaffed yet poor service from untrained staff with no PR skills passing on an arrogant management attitude. Forgetting things, running out of things, having to find someone to order an extra coffee (place not busy at all, mobs of service staff standing around talking), not explaining things properly, refusing to subtract or add things, an uninformative menu etc. I've eaten out at 1000 places around the world and at this place there were more service issues than the rest combined! The food itself is good and staff are polite and the location amazing. Probably better for wine and tasting platter than for a meal. The Magill Estate used to be the Hallmark for quality of service and customer satisfaction. Update 3/16:- Already 'dumbing the place down' a bit! The accountants have moved in? The place was quiet yet:- You can't build your own breakfast anymore , well ok but you can't add anything as an extra to their standard even if it's on another menu option. My partner first asked for something very close to what they had and we were told you cannot change anything at all. Only after I promoted the waitress and said surely you can remove something did she then agree to accept that. They also don't take Amex anymore even with a surcharge (which would never happen at a four to five star place, even biongiorno's down the road takes it with no surcharge). Also the menus are simplified, i.e back to the more basic stuff everyone else in Adelaide does, like pre-made fruit salad , pre made avocado spread from the fridge etc. Gone is the black pudding, porridge etc. Also, they are moving to pushing set platters straight out of the fridge like all the other 3 star wineries. (Which is fine but I smell an accountant or an Econo-chef who doesn't understand the 5 star showcase culture of the winery!) You want clients to be so happy they then walk to the wine counter and spend $500 rather than trying to save $5 off each meal. Great place for breakfast or brunch with indoor tables (uncomfortable chairs) and outdoor benches under a verandah and shaded by trees (no backs on seats). Inside is quite noisy but still has a great view over the vineyards. What a great location and with a trendy menu. All the food and coffee was great and I've heard brunch is also very good.

Yelp
The most expensive restaurant in Adelaide. For it's price, it does have a pay-off, fantastic tasting menu, well matched to beautifully aged wines with a stunning view of the city. Not exactly an affordable night out, but something worth doing every so often.

Yelp
We had the most incredible meal at Magill Estate Kitchen. We sat outside overlooking the vineyard on a gorgeous sunny day and enjoyed a few glasses of amazing wine. The food was exceptional- we had a few dishes and shared but I was blown away by all of them. I wish I had room for dessert because they looked delicious! I would highly recommend a visit, make sure you take your time and enjoy it as it's an oasis so close to the city centre.

Yelp
It's nice to be in a relaxed atmosphere for brekky, but there is such a thing as too relaxed. Our waitress ambled through her duties with distraction and little interest in our needs. The dining space is open, cool, & comfortable, & it was maybe half full. There seemed to be plenty of staff, so it wasn't as though people were run off their feet. We enjoyed a very average Croque Madame. The bread was overly thick & less than adequate coverage of ham. The egg was a smidge under cooked, with the white not even close to set. The pulled pork special on the other hand exceeded expectations, & was accompanied by just the right balance of goat curd & coriander. The egg on top was poached beautifully. The only imperfection was the soggy bruschetta underneath it all. The little things make a difference, & we had to twice ask the waitress to come back to our table to provide sugar for my tea, & some pepper for our meal. It was just unnecessarily annoying, & slow, & it was difficult to get her attention. The waitress was quick to remove our plates but offered us nothing else, & never returned. After waiting over 20 minutes we gave up & left without coffee & cake. One of our local cafes enjoyed our patronage afterwards. Overall it was ok, but less than great.

Yelp
If you are looking for a massively overpriced bistro, masquerading as a trendy up-market restaurant experience then you might be in heaven here - especially if you like to pay $50 for a steak (albeit a premium cut). Probably great for Chinese tourists. For my wife, her parents and me the experience left us pretty cold. The decor was harsh; cheap and noisy concrete surfaces (and a bit too trendoid for my taste); food we chose (the $40 special) was incredibly average (presentation was appalling); serves possibly just a little too small, with no side dishes included - absolutely everything was an (expensive) extra. Service was mixed - staff were very pleasant, but we waited around 30 minutes for entree, then a further 45 minutes for main - apparently, the staff were very busy in the restaurant. Even coffees took around 10 minutes. At the prices charged, would it be too much to serve a few vegetables on the plate (apparently the answer is yes). Staff chose the wine and made a very good choice. Outlook is potentially pleasant, but on our visit, the car park was being re-surfaced. Not the restaurant's fault, but one of the more attractive features was spoiled. Overall, fell far too short to be bothered again.
