Brigham Circle Booze Crawl - Eater Boston

"When I turned 21, a critical mass of my closest friends was living on Mission Hill. I was young and clueless then, and I remember being blown away that someone might put duck confit on a pizza. I also remember being a bit too excited by the mug club: Drink every beer Penguin hawks, and get your own personalized mug to drink from whenever you patronize the bar. I don’t go to Penguin much these days, but I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the space. Hit this spot last, and choose a pint, can, or bottle from Penguin’s deep beer list. It stopped serving the duck confit pizza several months ago, but a slice of pepperoni isn’t a bad option if you’re in need of mopping up some of that beer." - Terrence Doyle

The server/bar man is excellent giving attention, friendly and very efficient. The dishes we had are enjoyable, not salty, but the fries are made with old oil vs cost. We should try something else next time. Quite popular with both eat in guests and takeout. Very relaxed and popular. We would visit again.

Google
Holy ****. This might be my favorite place to drink in the city of Boston. I cannot emphasize more, the staff is fantastic and friendly, the drinks are well made and well poured. The atmosphere is literally perfect. If you want a beer, food, or a cocktail, come here. I felt like a penguin in a fellowship of penguins crossing the harsh terrain of Antarctica with my boys.

Google
we ordered large meat lovers, large diablo and followed to large chicken & broccoli each one number for lunch. it cost of 69USD. Packed hot and handovered me. all the items are good to eat.

First time here, it's a nice neighborhood bar atmosphere. Wheel of Fortune was playing on TV. The waitstaff was very attentive. Got buffalo wings and a large half/half buffalo chicken pizza / mushroom with mash potatoes pizza. The food was okay, I wasn't impressed. However, others thought it was standard. It works and does the job.

Was visiting my sister in nearby Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center hospital but cafeteria there closed by the time I was hungry saw on my phone Penguin Pizza was only like 0.5 mile short straight walk decided to call ahead & take the walk to this nearby pizza place glade I did it was worth it great thin crust pizza worth the walk!

Google
NBA games on tvs, great margarita buckets and pizza to go with. Each slice is two slices

Google
Garbage. Chicken Parm sandwich and fries - burnt and greasy. Eggplant with pasta - burnt and the pasta smelled/tasted like apple cinnamon oatmeal. I should have given the $60 to a homeless person and continued eating the hospital cafeteria smorgasbord. >> ZERO response from the owner - they apparently know their place sucks.

Google
Best boneless Buffalo wings I've had in a very long time. All these pizza joints have the frozen flat fingers. Penguins are real tenders, super plump and phat. And price is great! I'll be going there weekly just for take out and again to hang out and have pizza at the bar. Beer selections very good. Some crazy OS beers that I hadn't seen in a long time (Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Old Speckle Hen) and they have Dragon Stout from Jamaica! Pizza was outstanding. Got the Diablo. Spicy but not overwhelming uncontrollable - "I'm a white guy that can't do spicy may have ibs".lol was perfect! Well balanced with flavor and hots. Love love. Bartender was very friendly and attentive. As was rest of the staff chipping in and working together. Love seeing that. Service Industry seemed to have lost that since 2020 debacle. Anyway, I'll def be back soon! Thank you!

Yelp
Great food Amazing service Lunch special plus beverage for under $15?? This warm and welcoming spot was just right.

Yelp
" Tasty , fresh and. @ a good price " This place is a whole vibe. Silly , fun and spot on good pizzas . Very full menu of different kinds of pizza . Since I was missing Hawaii from my last vacation . I tried " the Hawaiian Pizza ". This pizza this time was great . Tasted delicious and fresh . The pizza is thin , big and at a good price . The service is excellent and friendly to top it off . Parking is difficult but manageable.

Yelp
Good pizza, nothing special. Service was friendly and efficient. Close to area hospitals, which is the only reason we ate there. Wouldn't come back if I wasn't in the area.

Yelp
Penguin Pizza was my go-to spot for pizza when I went to school in the area! I would call in my order while walking back to my car after class, and my pizza was always ready by the time I arrived. I love, love, LOVE their fig and prosciutto pizza. I would always get a large size with half fig & prosciutto, and half diablo. Oh my goodness, my mouth is watering just thinking about it as I am writing this review. Having one half being a sweeter pie & the other half being spicy is a great balance, at least for me...I end up getting tired of the flavor if it's just one flavor/toppings. And yes, I would order a large size to eat by myself (fun fact: I am also the girl who doesn't ever suggest getting pizza for food). The pizza here is just that good. Trust me, you have to come try their pizzas! Great prices too. 10/10 ;))

Yelp
I've visited Penguin Pizza several times over the last few months. The staff here is friendly and accommodating, and they have a good knowledge of the menu. The environment is casual and tends to cater towards college students, though it's definitely a mixed crowd of varying ages. They brew their own beer, and the penguin ale is a cheap and delicious favorite. The last time I visited I ordered a slice of pizza and a beer for a grand total of $10. The pizza, a cheese slice, was delicious, though as a vegetarian I appreciate that they always have two types of vegetarian slices available along with two for the meat eaters. This is a great casual eatery, and I would definitely recommend you spend an evening here.

Yelp
Back to 5 starts for this place as it's probably the most solid choice in Brigham Circle. Keeps me coming back.

Yelp
Before I get started, I want to be clear that this review is specifically for the Chicken Parm Sub, which cost $12.00. I've had the cheese pizza at Penguin Pizza before and that probably earns a 4.5/5 instead because their sauce is amazing. However, I had a very different experience with the Chicken Parm Sub: Chicken Parm Sub: The chicken was actually quite juicy, but the sandwich itself was hard to get down. Penguin Pizza has an amazing tomato sauce, but there was hardly any of it on the sub at all. A little bit more of their delicious sauce would have made this a lot better. The chicken was also crispy, but it had a strange burnt flavor to it - almost like the oil it was fried in was burnt itself (see below comment on fries for evidence of old oil). It wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't order it again. Fries: These were incredibly dark and felt like they had been fried in old oil. I was not a fan - they were overdone but also not done enough if that makes sense. They tasted a bit burnt but they weren't really crispy, which (along with the state of the chicken) leads me to think the oil was on the cusp of being burnt as well. All in all, I wouldn't order the Chicken Parm Sub again, and it gets a 3/5 from me. HOWEVER, on a separate occasion I have had great pizza here, so I will be back to try some of the other dishes another time.

Yelp
The pizza is amazing and never boring. Always new choices and old standbys. The staff can't be more welcoming, including the ever present and hard working owner. The open kitchen, exposed brick, and hard wood floors makes it the perfect space to throw a couple back and enjoy the pizza. Great variety of beers ands lots of other choices in the menu. Budget friendly daily specials. Great mix of locals, hospital professionals, and students. Go have fun!

Yelp
Fungus Amongus is the best pizza in the universe. I repeat, Fungus Amongus is the best pizza in the universe.

Yelp
Incredible vibes. Bartenders and cooks are all generous and kind. Food is amazing and drinks are fantastic. Would come here again!!

Yelp
I was in the area for work yesterday (9/19) and decided to grab something to eat. Initially, I thought about walking to Blackfan to visit the Chicken and Rice Guys food truck since it was Thursday, but Penguin Pizza was a closer option. I ordered two slices of pepperoni pizza and a Sprite. The Sprite was disappointing--completely flat. The pizza slices, however, were massive, each served on its own plate. While the pizza was good, I felt the crust (cornicione) was a bit too wide and empty, making up about a third of the slice. It left me feeling like I was missing out on more of the good stuff. The bartender was attentive and friendly, knowing the regulars' orders by heart and well-versed in the specials and how they were made. The place had a great vibe with funny movies playing on the screens, though I wish they'd had the captions on since the sound was muted. Overall, Penguin Pizza hit the spot. Would I choose it over the Brigham Café? Absolutely.

Yelp
Went here on Wednesday trivia night. Margarita bucket was phenomenal, cheap and a LOT of alcohol in it. The fries however, were no good at all. They looked like sweet potato fries and were extremely soggy. Doused in oil. Also the trivia questions were kind of ridiculous, extremely evident the table across from us was cheating. Maybe hire a referee. The bathrooms were very nice. It took quite a while for our table to receive the bill, which was tragic because by the time we left the establishment I was no longer drunk. If you go here, I would highly recommend wearing a T-shirt under your sweatshirt, because it's hot as a witches ya know. Crack a window please and thank you. That's all thank you. #goarmybeatnavy -Ryan

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch while visiting Harvard Chan Public Health school. This place is right next doors! Service was amazing! Pizza was even better. They have goumet pizza by slice, we tried the Pimento. The crust is one of the best I have tried! Thin, crispy and still able to hold up to the toppings...right proportion of toppings to crust! Every thing is very resonably priced. I wish we had such a gem in our neighborhood in Irving, TX!

Herbert H.

Yelp
Not your fault but grub hub driver didn't call or text and order status said delayed. Just to find out it was delivered to the neighbors 45 minutes ago and it's totally cold while I'm trying to entertain guests. Terp gave me $5 back pizza looks good sorry it reflects bad on the shop because of third party service. Pizza is good after reheating ‍

Maile P.

Yelp
James is a nice bartender! Great drinks yummy pizza! buckets were so fire and the atmosphere was great! Would bring my grandmother or a first date!
google avatar

Audrey S.

Yelp
Pizza was great...crust was awesome. I also got Mac n cheese and meatballs and spaghetti. Everything was tasty. And delivery was fast and accurate.

Art B.

Yelp
Penguin offered a luncheon chicken mustard wrap with fries for $5.00 which I thought was a good deal. Tasty, basic, good but not out of this world. Some lettuce but not stuffed with all sorts of veggie goodies. A beer for $5 brought the tab to the minimum for a debit card payment. Atmosphere was OK with new wave background music. What failed at Penguin was the staff. They stood there and made snide, small and petty comments which I did not appreciate. As far as I am concerned, the customer is still king and I was very disrespected. I included no tip. If I ONLY wanted basic good food at a reasonable price I may return. Anything in addition and I would be very disappointed.

Yelp
Great pizza, great staff, great vibe. Wednesday night trivia is a good time as well. They have "Too good to go" if you use that app.

Yelp
Stopped in while walking in the area. Recommended by a friend. This is an average pizza spot with bar food. I did find it interesting though that it is a waited on experience, I had thought it would just be an order at the counter which was a nice surprise. The service as average nothing I would rave about. Food was okay, although we did not get the pizza. We ordered mozzarella sticks which were not terrible but also not the best either. I also got the chicken pesto panini with a Caesar salad. I could of made a better salad at home and the chicken was chewy in the sand which. So overall not highly impressed but not the worst place I have ever been. However for a local bar food experience it was just how I would expect it to be.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
The pizza here is great. The service is even better. This is also a conscientious place that cared about people's health during the pandemic and didn't allow crazy antivaxxers to put their customers at risk. I'll always patronize this restaurant because of that.
google avatar

Yelp
Our favorite pizza while in Boston. Atmosphere is nothing to get excited about. Service was sub par. But the pizza was excellent
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
Food: It's heavy, greasy, filling food. However, I must say it is delicious. Their large pizzas are HUGE, you can easily be full after 1-2 slices. Their pesto pasta was delicious, very creamy. Their wings were also delicious (not even a big wings gal), but my faves were the pickle spears for sure - I LOVE pickles, and these were fried perfectly. I feel like it's good night/bar food for sure, especially the apps like wings and pickle spears which are greasy and easy to split. Store: Lol this is where I can't give it a full rating - having gone to Northeastern, I'm not the biggest fan of going to Mission Hill (alone) at night. The bar is also not fancy or anything, it does have a lot of college students (which makes sense obviously), and it's really dark. However, the owner is really nice!
google avatar

Yelp
Of all the spots in Mission Hill, Penguin Pizza is my favorite. Catering to the needs of locals, college students, medical professionals, and everyone in between, Penguin creates a comfortable atmosphere and welcoming environment. The owner, Pam, is one of the friendliest people I've ever met, and the food is amazing! Absolutely love Penguin Pizza!

Yelp
Excellent wings. Sauce on side is great. Phenomenal beer selection Just like we remembered

Yelp
Had a Pepperoni pizza for takeout when i got it home the pepperoni had a foul smell i hope i don't get sick tonight.

Yelp
Food is great, but mice and bugs around the restaurant. Makes me want to throw up. Will not be coming back if it not fixed.
google avatar

Yelp
Pizza is very good. I've tried several different combinations now and all have been very good. Staff is always nice and the place seems clean. Worth a stop if your in Mission Hill area

Yelp
Poor service, dirty, watched a guy in the kitchen eating (fingers in mouth) then continue making food. Yuck.

Elena G.

Yelp
Disgusting, filthy restaurant. Only customers in there. Pile of dirty dishes outside the door of restroom. Entire full bus cart. Waitress:server is absolutely useless. Talking with a bar customer about cat shit and piss while we're 5 feet away at a table. Pizza tasted very funky, like sour or something gone bad on it. But when the cook sampled something from a pot on a large black spoon and proceeded to return it to the pot. I left. Waited outside. I have had worse service, I've had worse food . This was easily the most disgusting place I've ever experienced.edit: I didn't eat any pizza. I ate a crust. I also didn't eat the cheese water that came with the pretzel. Steak and cheese wasn't a hit either if you didn't notice. The bus cart was overflowing blocking the restroom door, with no customers. And the waitress was talking about her cat allergies and that it smells like cat shit and cat piss constantly. She's probably your roommate. You seem like those living arrangements would be acceptable to you. You may have lost a few customers when I was waiting outside. Ever hear of servsafe? Or is the telemundo talk show too loud? You're just gross

Samantha H.

Yelp
If you have an allergy, don't eat here. In fact, if you don't want to support poor management and customer service, don't eat here. Just had to most horrific exchange with this restaurant. Rude staff, slow service, and if you order for an allergy- this is what you will get!! When asked if they could make the situation right, they laughed and said NO! If I could give it a worse rating I would. A $14 refund is too much for them!
google avatar

Angela Z.

Yelp
Great spot for group lunch or a slice & beer. The large pizza menu here offers something for all tastes and moods. You can even order half-and-half pizzas and get two different topping combos on one pie! Taste-wise, the pizzas are solid but not amazing - sometimes a touch too saucy or oily. My favorites are the Tuscan Fig & Prosciutto, The Diablo (spicy sausage), and The Honolulu (Hawaiian with caramelized onions). Other notes: - Service is very friendly! - Skip the fries - they're rather limp and greasy. The poutine comes with mozzarella pieces rather than real cheese curds. - Dine-in orders can take 30+ mins. However, you can pre-order by phone before arriving to eat.

Kels H.

Yelp
buckets. pizza. vibes. my favorite place to go, if i could live there i would. peace and love
google avatar

Yelp
We ate in for dinner and we're greeted at the door by the wait staff. All were friendly and hopefully. We decided on the pepperoni pizza and the hot chicken sandwich. Everything was delicious and I love the thin crust pizza. Also the hot pickles that came on the chicken sandwich I could have ate a jar of . Great local spot for a casual dinner.
google avatar

Bryana S.

Yelp
Eek! Methinks not. We had been ordering from them for awhile. In general they are good. But today we had a bad experience that makes me not want to order from them anymore. Ordered 10 pies for my staff, and I ordered chicken sandwich due to my dairy allergy. We ordered it for at an event at 12, so . Because it was an ongoing event not everyone got a chance to eat right away. I ate few bites when I had free time not really even looking at it cause I was starving and in a rush. I shoved a few bites in my face. I didn't eat the whole thing due an issue with the event I needed to attend too and left it wrapped up. It was in a locked room that no one would have tampered with. At the end of the event I came home and went to reheat the sandwich. I took the chicken and top bun off to remove lettuce before I nuked it. And there was a whole dirty penny in it. The lettuce also looked super gross and old. Setting it out for a couple hours doesn't make fresh lettuce look like that. I'm super grossed out and disappointed esp since I spent 200+ on pizzas. Now I'm hoping the pizza's were okay and hoping I won't have any sick staff come monday. Won't order from them again.
google avatar

Maria A.

Yelp
Love the staff friendly and the owner Pam is fabulous the pizza is delicious it's big for sharing and it's a great place to get pizza and Beer they also make great drinks love to there great place in the neighborhood and it's a great place if you and your Family are in the Hospital
google avatar

Elyssa F.

Yelp
The pizza was ok but definitely not the best I've ever had. The toppings and selections were great the dough just had a bit of an odd taste.
google avatar

Erik P.

Yelp
Crust is absolutely flavorless. The sauce has a weird taste to it. I'm very disappointed. I've ordered from this place several times in the past but I haven't been for a few years. It doesn't even look the way I remember it or resemble the photos that I see online. It also could've used a few more minutes in the oven.
google avatar

Clare E.

Yelp
This is a special spot in Boston BUT can be disappointing depending on the day. I love Penguin for their easy casual atmosphere, Monday night 25 cent wings, Taco Tuesday (3 for $4.50), and decent price and selection of beer and cocktails. It's a great place just to hang out with friends and grab a few beers in a city that is often exhaustingly pretentious. I stick to their apps and pizzas. You really can't go wrong there, but their buffalo wings and fig and prosciutto pizza are my absolute favorites. I've had amazing experiences here BUT I've also had some disappointing ones - wings have been dry, pizza has been burnt. It seems to me like sometimes the kitchen just gets lazy. But then I come back and the food is amazing again. I'll keep coming back. It's great bar food, just don't expect gourmet!
google avatar

Alison D.

Yelp
This was probably, without exaggeration, the worst take out experience I have ever had. The order consisted of a chicken parm sub with fries and a meatball sub with a side salad. Both subs were barely sauced and very dry. The meatballs were terribly salted, the cheese was a solid piece barely melted. The chicken parm consisted of an overly cooked piece of what they say was chicken but I have never had a piece of chicken the texture of this food in my life. The side salad was ok, nothing special. The fries were cold and soggy. Paid $27 for this meal that was not even edible, we literally trashed it. A previous visit, I had tried their pizza and wasn't impressed so, combined with this trip, I do not plan to ever return.
google avatar

Ken L.

Yelp
Customer service was ok. Just don't take a bite of your pizza and then bring the rest back up to the counter to show them a long strand of hair because it'll presumably be your own hair even if you're clean cut, close shaved, and wearing a hat and a mask. Also not a female and the hair was about 6 inches compared to the length of my colleagues and I which we all have very short hair. Last time we'll go there.
google avatar

Sam H.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, but the fries were soggy and lacked much flavor, and the bbq chicken pizza had very little bbq sauce. Plus the chicken smelled. Meatball sub was pretty good, but nothing special.

Aaron L.

Yelp
The food sucks, they messed up a caesar salad... I never thought a pizza place can make terrible salad... let alone pizza
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Excellent fried pickles to start. I enjoyed the Hot Chicken sandwich which was served piping hot! Enormous serving and so tasty. Cute spot!

Yelp
This place is a beer lover's dream. They pretty much carry every kind of beer one could dream up. A whopping 250+ beer options. Drink them all and get your name engraved on a mug and hung on their wall. 3.5 stars. 4 stars for the extensive beer list. 3.5 stars for better-than-average pizza and a solid attempt at pizza topping combinations. 3.75 stars for friendly service and a laid back neighborhood feel. 3 stars for ambience, no frills, just a casual place to hang with friends. Last Friday was my third time here. Previously I came for beer and fries, yesterday we ordered wings and a couple of pies for dinner too. The Bird (BBQ sauce, BBQ chicken, carmelized onions) was tasty, incorporating large chunks of chicken and a sweet BBQ sauce on top of a thin, slightly chewy crust. The Diablo (Hot Italian sausage, spicy tomato sauce, hot cherry peppers, red onions, green peppers) wasn't for the faint of heart, it was legitimately spicy, but good flavors were there. There were a few other pizzas that looked interesting (Tuscan Fig & Prosciutto, The Pimento and The Fungus Amongus), and I'm looking forward to trying them next time! On another note, the fries were pretty bland and kinda mealy, not crispy but not soggy, something in between. Personally I like crispier fries so I wasn't really feeling these.

Manny C.

Yelp
Food and beer are very affordable. Great atmosphere for a low key meal on week nights and can get active at peak hours.
google avatar

Victoria H.

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick lunch today. The waiter was super nice and the food came pretty quick. I ordered 2 slices of pizza, one pepperoni and one roasted eggplant and ricotta. I was astonished on how big they're when the waiter came with my order. Tables and restroom were clean. Pop music during my stay (a Wednesday noon). Long menu of beers and food to choose. Really good first impression.
google avatar

Mikaela D.

Yelp
I would have really liked this place. Food was good, got the jalapeño poppers and quesadilla, boyfriend got the pasta carbonara. All was well until we saw a roach in the Parmesan shaker. Staff was super nice and comped our drinks but honestly nothing will make up for the COPIOUS amounts of Parmesan my boyfriend ate before we noticed the bug.
google avatar

Vy H.

Yelp
I live and work really close to here and have been told I really needed to try their pizza. Some friends and I gathered at Penguin on a Monday night for dinner. We all ordered slices and a selection of wings. Some of my friends got the pretzel sticks and nachos as well. The pretzel sticks I did not try but the nachos were like what you'd throw together at home with some Tostito's, salsa, and, cheese. The toppings also came on the side which was a little strange. The pizza was pretty disappointing as well. I got a slice of a butternut squash and pizza and found the slice pretty bare of toppings. The most disappointing part of the night were the wings. Monday is wings night which means wings were 25 cent each so I guess I can't really complain. However, I'm 4'10" with midget hands and the wings were about the size of my pinky. The meal was cheap but I'm doubtful I'll be back.

Yelp
Always pop in here when we're in the neighborhood or grab takeaway for a hospital stay. Pizza is on point: love the fig & prosciutto, the ultimate, the Bianco, or the neopolitan. Definitely, have to get the traditional poutine too! It can get busy so just be aware if you're going to sit & eat.
