Sorrel Brings Beautiful, If Unsurprising, Food to Pacific Heights | Eater SF

"I still see the same women bringing their finest threads to Peninou for French cleaning, a small sign of the street's tony, time‑warp character." - Rachel Levin

Didn't actually have the chance to use them as they wanted $97 to clean my suit pants and jacket. Claimed there was a stain fee and designer suit fee. Since they were waiting to talk to me before proceeding it ended up not being done in time for a wedding I was attending. It's a shame as they are close to my place and seemed like they would do a great job. The hunt for a dry cleaner is still on I guess.

I came for a meeting with Joel, he was very predatory and demeaning towards me.

Google
Totally deceptive, ridiculously expensive and then not ready on time. Don't use Peninou. I went in in person on a Thursday asking for a tuxedo and shirt to be ready the next Thursday. They said "no problem" and that will be ready by Tuesday. I went in on Wednesday and the shirt is unknown when it will be ready, so now I need to buy a new shirt today for the event tomorrow. Also, they said it would cost $80 to $140 for the tuxedo itself, depending on the brand. If it's couture, then it's $140. Guess what they charged me? $145 for tux that's definitely not couture. Ridiculous. Do not use Peninou.

Did not remove stains on dress, then over charged compared to advertised rates on their front counter...after pointing out their poor service (un-removed stains); I pointed out overcharges, attendant did nothing about overcharges. Suggest trying somewhere else. There are a few in d/town Tiberon.

They take very good care of garments too valuable for the corner dry cleaners. Never had a lost or damaged item.

Yelp
Why is it dry cleaners, when they ruin your clothes, always DENY they did? Warning, dry cleaners do NOT know what they are doing...they are not trained to clean luxury clothing with fine fabrics, trim, colors. You will be sorry!

Yelp
My daughter was recently baptized and i came here to clean her gown on a recommendation from my aunt who often uses Peninou for her fancier items. I spoke with Carly who explained the process on how the gown would be cleaned. She suggested I have it preserved because I wanted to save it for my daughter. I had no idea they preserved baptism gowns. She explained the box was just like the ones they use to preserve wedding gowns, just smaller. When I went to pick up, I couldn't believe how nice the gown looked along with the packaging. They included little white gloves to wear if I ever decided to open the box to look at the gown so I wouldn't get it dirty. I have the best experience here. It is a little pricey but worth it. The customer service is great! I would definitely recommend Peninou.

Yelp
BROUGHT A LOUIS VUITTON SHIRT THERE AND IT SHRUNK AFTER GETTING CLEANED. I had wore it once and brought it there to be cleaned. After I got it back the shirt shrunk and does not even fit at all. Even the label of the shirt got completely faded. Spoke to the manager Ryan and he basically told me to bad. Think twice before bringing your items there. You pay top dollar and they can possibly ruin your item. BEWARE!

Yelp
Never take anything you value to this company to have cleaned. Period. They send your clothing to a central plant to clean so nothing special or French about that. I trusted them with my Jonathan Simkhai cotton lace appliqué dress that I was "going" to wear as my wedding dress, and I specifically asked if they were familiar with this type of dress or material and the manager told me "yes, we do lots of bridal and couture" so I was satisfied and gave it to her tags on never been worn. What I got back was a dress that was soft and rumpled instead of its original crisp Aline shape with a layered tea length skirt and semi rigid bodice, It now looked like a bohemian sundress. The underlying liner stuck out about a inch beyond the lace overlay and was wrinkled and bunched under the bust and armholes, basically the white cotton appliqué had shrunk and the synthetic liner had not. I could no longer fit my shoulders and arms into the carefully tailored cap sleeves that I had numerous fittings to adjust. Not to mention I got my dress back 3 days before I was leaving for our destination wedding! I had to immediately go buy a dress off the rack have a rush tailor job buy all new undergarments and shoes because I wasn't able to wear the dress I spent an entire year choosing, tailoring and getting all the details for. My wedding was 9/8 they still have my dress because they want to try to reclean it, well that's a big help. Great customer service right? Thanks for nothing. I spoke with Laura and Ryan of their customer relations team and I asked that they refund my original cleaning fee of $130 and Ryan said since they followed they care instructions and that my dress couldn't be ironed I wouldn't be refunded. Which was completely contradictory to what the store manager assured me about the care of my dress. I have never been treated so terrible by a business. Avoid this business, support your neighborhood dry cleaners.

Yelp
SCAM ALERT UPDATE: Had issues with Peninou charging nearly $30 per men's shirt for regular dry cleaning. Ultimately, I called Peninou to complain and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. To add insult to injury, this culminated in a letter from Brian Crosby, General Manager of Peninou, acknowledging that "your questions about our pricing are certainly understandable." He then explains nothing about how their pricing works, does not offer to fix the situation, and tells me to consult their web site for information regarding pricing. The irony of course, is that the website has no pricing information on it! Heck, I couldn't even get pricing information when I called them. So BEWARE - USE PENINOU AND GET READY TO BE RIPPED OFF. Complain and you'll get a form letter from the general manager acknowledging that he ripped you off.

Yelp
I had a similar experience to the one described above earlier this year - I had a dress cleaned & the bill exceeded the cost of the dress. No thanks!

Yelp
One star, because I could not post this without choosing at least one. I have not used Peninou for dry cleaning, but had a horrible experience with one of their drivers last week. I was leaving my sister's apartment on Broadway (in San Francisco) and a Peninou van was blocking the driveway with no one in the van, no blinkers on. A short skinny man walked up to the van and I asked him to please move his van as its blocking the driveway. He said, "I will be done in 5 minutes," and then went across the street to deliver some clothes. No apology or concern that he was blocking private property. I called the police to have him ticketed or towed, but they did not arrive in time. When he came back to the van and I asked him to move again he said, "Leaving now so be quiet!" What if I was a customer? And why should that even matter? No company should allow themselves to be represented by a man who speaks to anyone like that. Peninou has their own Rush Limbaugh. They won't lose advertisers out of this, but they should lose a driver. This man should be fired.

Yelp
I love dropping off my cleaning at this place. The employees are so fast, friendly and pay very close attention to detail. I trust ONLY Peninou French Laundry with my most delicate & expensive items. They do such an amazing job. Did you know they can remove Candle Wax??? My leather items come back looking superb. My grandmothers linens are exquisite, and my wedding dress was cleaned, repaired & preserved beautifully. They can even mail my items to me when I fly back and forth from New York. I am truly thankful that there is a Peninou near by. Special Thanks to Carly, Tiff, and Andrea :)

Yelp
Ignacio Justo the driver of peninou laundry in south san francisco is the best. He is very helpful and friendly. extremly convenience and flexible. always great service from my driver ( Ignacio Justo ) .

Walter W.

Yelp
Yes, they are more expensive than your average cleaner that returns your shirts with broken buttons, oil stains, and gives you back your dirty collars. That's if your lucky to get your shirt back at all. I've given them by better shirts to clean and they come back like new.

J B.

Yelp
I knew these guys were expensive going into it. No matter, I could afford a great job on my clothing. At the very least, I figured I would get EXACTLY what I asked for and at best I would be very impressed at their workmanship. Instead, I had the WORST dry cleaning experience I have EVER HAD! Here is what I had cleaned: one white tuxedo shirt, one white bow tie. I wanted the shirt to be heavy starch, the stiffer the better. I wanted the bow tie to be cleaned, it was lightly discolored. Difficult, right? Out of the ordinary, right? Certainly not a tall order I would think. This isn't a wedding dress or anything. What I got back: A tie that was even MORE discolored than when I brought it in! As for the shirt...a simple white shirt....it literally WAS DESTROYED. The material DISINTEGRATED. Not just on a seam, but the middle of the shirt was FRAGGED. This was not an old shirt, not an out of the ordinary designer shirt. I have taken it to my local Chinese laundry without a problem. The cost? A mere $30 for GARBAGE!!!! How these idiots stay in business is beyond me.

Yelp
I have used this cleaner sporadically because they are very expensive. So if something is special or a jacket needs reweaving I will take a deep breath and send it in. Recently I put a bag together- a single dry cleaning bag- and left it out for pick up. It had a few sweaters ($35 each to dry clean), some of my husband's shirts, a cotton dress of mine, and a few of my blouses. They picked it up and returned it with a bill of $660. Yes- $660. Apparently while I can have a sweater dry cleaned for $35, a size 2 plain silk blouse with no ruffles or buttons is $72 to clean. My cotton dress was $75 to wash. I would never ever have guessed it could be that expensive, and I was beyond shocked. They do not provide pricing on their website, so there's no way I could have known in advance without getting an estimate in advance. It never occurred to me that I would need to do that with DRY CLEANING. I called Ryan at customer service to explain my surprise and asked him to call me back with an explanation (I said this calmly and nicely, in fact) and it's been 2 weeks with no call from him. Honestly, I'm flabbergasted that people continue to support this business.

Karen S.

Yelp
I took my suede jacket here to be cleaned. They told me it would take six weeks and would cost $95. I reluctantly agreed because it was an expensive jacket and I wanted it done right. When I finally got it back, it had a hard grey spot on the right shoulder that was not there when I took the jacket in to be cleaned. Back it went to the cleaners. I waited another five weeks (this was a rush) and the spot is lighter in color, but still a hard spot the size of a quarter. "Sorry, sometimes these things happen." I wrote a letter to the owner asking for a reduction in the cleaning fee and instead of responding and possibly offering a future discount that I would never use, they blew me off completely and did not respond at all. I will never return to this HIGHLY priced cleaners that offers NO customer service and ruins your clothing.

Yelp
This place completely blows. I get a coupon for $50 off a pre-cleaning when I bought my wedding dress. I just needed some spots removed and a pressing. They gave me an oral estimate of $200. Okay, kinda high, but I needed it. A few days later I received a call that the dress was ready and the bill was $649!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was furious!!! I told them there was no way I was going to pay that. They said they'd see what they could do. I went down there, and they couldn't find the dress, then they couldn't find the person I talked to, etc. I was getting ready to wreck the joint. Finally, after having a hissy fit, I was able to pick up my dress and paid $300, just for a PRE-CLEAN!!! I refuse to go here to have my dress cleaned and preserved. Forget it! You can get better service and quality for way less prices at Biltmore French Laundry on Valencia Street. To top it off, I did not use Peninou's stinking delivery service. I drove myself to SSF. No discount for that. Forget this place!!!!

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Cesar Ramirez, one of the delivery drivers at Peninou, did a marvelous turn for our friend. He was driving past our house, when she fell and was injured. Cesar heard her shouts for "help" and stopped his van to come to her rescue. He stayed with her until the paramedics came, calming her and reassuring her. Afterward, he checked up on her in the hospital and came by our house as well. He is such a thoughtful and remarkable person. He is a testament to all the good in people.

Yelp
Sadly, my experience was the same as the other one star reviewers. I wish they would be closed down. Ruined my favorite Carolina Herrera blouse that I hardly ever wore because I loved it so much and didn't want to wreck it. Peninou held on to it for three weeks and then sent photos to me, claiming that I had brought it in, ruined. When they finally returned it to me, it was literally shredded. They need to be shut down, not only for being the worst cleaners but also for their horrible business practices. Who are they, anyway?

Yelp
I am giving the 5 stars based primarily on their customer service- which I find lacking in so many businesses. I had my Mom's wedding dress from 1936 which had never been properly stored and had some spots and distress areas. I brought it in for an assessment as to whether anything could be done to restore it or package it properly to prevent further deterioration. After sending it to their specialist in this type of thing I received a call back saying the material was too fragile and it would be a mistake to risk it- and they would deliver back to me with no fee. The point here is they could have easily encouraged me to risk it and charge I would assume a fair amount of cash for the effort and if the material fell apart they could say I was warned and it was my choice- but they didn't. The two customer reps I dealt with were Allan and Gaby- both friendly, professional and helpful. The restoration rep was Karen, who was very helpful and thoroughly answered my questions.
