Another Ugly Experience at Peoria Road Farm
They say in life "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree," and I have found that to be true. I don't know what tree the teenager who accused me of stealing from the Peoria Road Farm fell out of, but he must have fallen hard.
Tall kid, beaky, with strange curly hair like an upside-down pyramid. He followed me into the empty farm store parking lot, glaring at me, and I knew this would be no picnic.
"Hey, did you pay for all that stuff?" he glared, sneering and indignant. "Yeah, I paid for it," I replied, indignant myself. "And I don't really appreciate being accused of ripping anyone off. Go ask the girl at the cash register, she's the one who rang up the sale."
He didn't apologize but mumbled something about how it was closing time and he to check sales. Something stupid.
The whole thing was so stupid.
My wife was angered about it, too, when she heard the story. She called the farm store the next day to speak about the thing with a manager. But he told her he had no control over the actions of his employees. He never offered her an apology, seemed to think the whole thing was funny, didn't really see the problem.
It wasn't the first time I've had problems at Peoria Road Farm. Another time, when my boy was three years old, I brought him out there to pick raspberries. I asked where to park at the farm store, and the girl behind the register told me I could park out near the fields. It was a beautiful day and we were picking lots of berries, having a blast, when the farmer who runs the place suddenly turned up and started yelling at me and my boy, fists all balled up and red in the face, accusing me of lying about the parking (as if this justified verbally beating me up in front of my kid). I am not kidding -- really thought me and this farmer guy were going to come to blows right out in his field. So I had to be the mature one and diffuse the situation, which took about 15 minutes because they jerk was so angry, he just didn't want to let it go, like a pit bull who's seen a steak and can't control himself from taking a bite -- my three-year-old boy be damned.
So I guess I will be boycotting the Peoria Road Farm from now on, and if you are a friend of mine, you will boycott it, too. Because this guy obviously doesn't give a damn about anyone from Corvallis or taking care of his customers in any meaningful way -- although my bank statement shows that he definitely cares about taking our money.
