Pepino’s Restaurant in Sylvan Lake Closes After Nearly 40 Years | Eater Detroit

"Family-run since 1984 by Swiss chef Joe Bernardi and his wife, the restaurant built a loyal following for classic steak, pasta, veal, seafood and salad offerings and was particularly known for its rainbow trout and chargrilled lamb chops. Bernardi — a World War II veteran who once cooked for troops and later served as executive chef for notable figures — guided the kitchen’s identity. The business survived a 2015 fire by relocating to Sylvan Lake and weathered a temporary COVID-19 closure earlier in the year, but owners announced on social media that they are permanently closing after nearly 38 years, citing an inability to replace retiring or medically absent staff; the farewell post framed the closure as the end of a long, sentimental run full of first dates, engagements, birthdays and family gatherings." - Monica Williams

Worst Mexican food I had. Spinach Enchiladas were edible not great. Chile relleno is not cooked the typical way. They scramble egged in a pan like a tortilla they cooked the egg not sides and add the chile poblano. Tasteless. Beans were ok. We ask a side of guacamole. I wish I took a picture was 3 small scoops size of a dollar coin. They charge me 8.19 . The menu says guacamole side 1.99 so be aware we ask an itemized receipt because they don’t provide it. Waitress was friendly. But I Don’t recommend this place. 0 stars

Food was very Good. I had the chile verde. The server said it was not spicy, but she told me it could be made spicy. I asked her to do so. I would say the heat was low/medium. The sauce was a clean, tangy, tomatillo, with maybe some jalapenos for heat.. The meat was tender and juicy. The service was wonderful! Three different ladies came by regularly to check if we needed anything. They are all very nice! We were just passing by crossing the country. So unfortunately we may have a chance to visit again. But if we lived near, Pepino's would be a frequent dining spot for us.

I absolutely love this place, its the best food I've had. Great service, the food isn't drowning in grease like a lot of other places I've been to.

The food was excellent! Tasted great, big portions, the drinks and service on the other hand were terrible! The strawberry mango daiquiri came with no strawberries and rimmed with salt. Asked 3 different people for a straw and the waiter had an attitude.

The service when we went was exceptional. I enjoyed the complimentary queso and fresh salsa, chips were light and fresh. I got #7 which was an enchilada and taco. I got to choose what type of both I wanted and then asked for a tamale as well. This place is a nice find between Checotah Oklahoma City.

I had Camarones A La Diabla and a Chili Relleno. The sauce confused me because I’m used to south west Mexicano food. Once I got used to the bbq’esque flavor I began to enjoy it. The Chili Relleno was absolutely on point though. The service and atmosphere queued me in that I was about to get some damned good food. I would have taken pics but I was too anxious to start stuffing my face. I very seldom give all five stars but Pepino’s nailed it.

First off the water down cheese and the watery salsa had my stomach in knots. The waiter was friendly. Service was good but the food made my husband puke. We won’t be back here. They just was very greasy. I have always said I’ve never been to a bad Mexican restaurant, but unfortunately I had to say that with this one.
