The 38 Best Pittsburgh Restaurants - Eater

"Since 1983, Peppi’s Old Tyme Sandwich Shoppe has been a staple in the Burgh for steak, chicken, and Italian subs, as well as Pittsburgh-style salad, typically topped with french fries instead of croutons. The version at Peppi’s, labeled the “now famous” steak salad on the menu, is a classic of the form, loaded with juicy steak, fresh-cut fries, and shredded provolone." - Briana L White

Google
Fantastic food! Took us about 25 min to get our food, but it was worth the wait. Very nice lady took our order, the chef brought us the food himself and was also incredibly friendly. Food was delicious! We ordered the large Cajun fries, the chicken breast salad, and The Butcher, along with two drinks, and it came out to $30. Very affordable prices for high quality food.

I used to live in Pennsylvania some years ago, and fell in love with Peppi's. My husband and I were visiting the area, and we couldn't leave without him trying a sub. The service at this location is awesome and the subs are always on point. The seasoned fries and onion rings are a must have! The ranch it comes with compliments them wonderfully. The subs are huge! So be prepared to have them wrap up the rest. Great selection of beverages as well.

Google
Ooooooooh, my lord! ABSOLUTELY amazing. Hands down the best sandwiches I've EVER had! The service was great, the atmosphere is more than inviting. The shop is simple & when you walk in, you can TELL....this is IT! We tried 2 different sandwiches & honestly couldn't decide which I liked better. I wish I had a Peppi's around the corner from my house. My toddler loved the sandwich & his fries as well 😋

Google
Five stars and worth every single one. I love those guys in there and the sandwiches they make are amazing!! Reminded me of my hometown sandwich shop. Felt right at home as soon as I walked in. Much love from Akron, OH. 💛 Featured sandwichs: Carol Delight - served cold or hot!

Google
Wow! I am so impressed with the restaurant. First, the staff are so friendly and kind! And it's in interesting area! You can make a day of it and stop by here if you do. The food was delicious and there were very generous portions. It was fairly easy on the wallet to. If I come back to Pittsburgh, I'll be back @Peppi's in the strip.

Google
Went in to order 2 sandwiches and large fries for dinner to take home. Greeted straight away, was helped with choices and placed order, paid in cash and 10 minutes all was ready. They packed the tomatoes, lettuce, onions and condiments all separate to keep cold items cold and hot items hot. Got home and my Son and I demolished the meals, they were that good. The bread they use is awesome and the sandwiches are very tasty as are the hand cut fresh fries. This place is a 5 out of 5.

Google
Fantastic food and service, all in a classic atmosphere. I’m glad they’ve kept so much around, like the landline phones and the decorations on the walls. The food was great, super heavy but beautifully prepared. I’ll be looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
Get the Rothlisberger!! Can't wait to get back to Pittsburgh to try again. Will probably try the other location.

Yelp
Peppi's is a classic institution in Pittsburgh. You want a true hogie...go to Peppi's. This location is small and it's constantly busy. You can dine in or order to go and they also offer pick-up. Go with a classic like the "cathedral" - ham, turkey, bacon and provolone cheese (get it warm for an extra kick). They also serve the classic Pittsburgh salad, with shaved beef and french fries on lettuce. I had more than one person eyeing my salad! Located in the heart of the strip district - there is only street parking available and it can be a challenge.

Yelp
A strip district staple and a classic place to get a sub. Food (3/5): It is hard to beat a loaded up sub on a Mancini's bun. With Mancini's right next door, the buns are always fresh. That is probably the best part of the sub these days. The loaded up part falls short, however, which is a shame. I ordered the #7 Roethlis"burger. The sausage and beef combination is a blend of flavor and textures. The egg and American cheese are nice complements. Service (5/5): The guys working the counter and the grill are engaging and funny. It seems they enjoy being there and it adds to the environment. There is not service once you sit down but they will bring your food out and ask if you need anything else. Price (4/5): Most subs are around the $10-$12 range which is a good deal. You will pay that at Subway these days and these are much better than that.

Yelp
The food tastes good but they should be called Breadgie. They are dominated by the bun with barely any meat. The shrinkflation that has taken place here is a shame. Last time for me.

Yelp
Stopped here on NYE for lunch. Located in the strip district, unless you have a proper plan for parking, finding a spot may be tricky. We stay in the strip district so we walked. No real frills to this place - obviously a strictly focused attention to the food - outdated decor and discolored walls and decor means the food is going to be gas. Ordered a Pittsburgher and shared fries. It has been maybe 10 years? since I've ordered a cheeseburger sub? Worth the wait bc this one was great. Ordered mine with grilled onions, LT, and chipotle mayo for an extra kick. They had a line but still only took 10 minutes to come out. Fries are boardwalk style - peanut oil with that trust cut look. Would recommend here every time. Very good.

Yelp
This was on the list of things to try and so we did. I think the sub I chose was my first mistake and really wish I would've gotten the pittsburgher instead got the classic cheese steak figuring I couldn't go wrong any way. Nothing too much to report negatively, all went smooth - ordered, drinks, etc. and ate and left. I think my steak sub was good - almost though like it was missing something for this condiment queen. I would've put mayo on this like a comforter on a bed. Fries were good and I always like little places that have so much reputation. Will recommend. Although, I think people already know.

Yelp
Casual dive sandwich spot. Service is great here, very energized. Definitely grimy in there, but if you can get past that the sandwiches are great. Ordered a steak sandwich with blazin sauce and cajun seasoning with hot peppers. Flavor was fantastic. Will come back.

Yelp
Ummm I might be Peppi's number one fan? Every where else we were trying to go in the Strip was PACKED, so we stumbled into Peppi's as kinda a last resort. Booyyyyy am I glad we did. Classic Pittsburgh sandwich shop with lots of classic options and some other unique options to choose from! We settled on a classic steak sandwich and a chicken bacon mushroom sub- both were perfect. From the bread, to the quality of the meat, to the toppings, everything was so spot on. The workers were friendly and delightful- fun vibe from them all as you order at the counter and then deliver your food. Everything about this place makes you feel like your in the heart of the Strip District in Pittsburgh, and I just can't explain it any other way. Everything about our experience was phenomenal and I can't wait to be back!

Yelp
originally planning to dine nearby, based on a recommendation for sandwiches, we pulled an audible when I considered getting myself a sandwich without bread would basically just be a salad, so I should opt for a place famous for their salads instead....& so I discovered the famous 'Pittsburg Salad' inside & outside both gave a delightful neighborhood vibe- waiting to order we were entertained by the friendly banter the staff had with their customers, so much fun in fact we decided to eat in instead of taking to-go Hubby opted for the famous No.7 sandwich & I got my Pittsburg Salad (requesting the house special blazin'sauce from another sandwich as my dressing-highly recommend) church bench seating, deli ticket counter number system with food brought to the table- the food was absolutely delicious- both loaded with ingredients, well-seasoned, so much juicy flavor- the fries were perfectly crispy- I felt like I inhaled the massive portions-just could not stop eating would recommend, would frequent if we lived closer

Yelp
The Food and the service were fantastic! For a small storefront, they had plenty of seating for singles and groups! I would definitely go there again!

Yelp
Food: Probably the best sandwiches in the strip in my opinion. I'm partial to the #7 with the addition of cherry pepper relish to it. They've got a deep menu that has something for everybody Service: Always treated well there, and they always get my take out orders correct Ambiance: It's not fancy, but that's part of the charm to it. Overall: My favorite sandwich spot in the strip which has a lot of great food. A place my out of town friends ask to go to when they come to town because they love to visit!
google avatar

Yelp
Who doesn't like a Sub, lol. My partner and I stumbled on this place and it was pretty tasty! It was very busy when we went so the wait was a bit long but we both had the Sicilian and it was good. Had we known how huge they were we could have shared! The menu is huge though so it was very hard to choose and we'll have to try some more.

Yelp
Santucci. Loved it. Very flavorful and the right amount. So happy I came here instead of primanti brothers. Staff was super nice. I got some chipotle Mayo on the side that really set it off!
google avatar

Gabriel F.

Yelp
Classic dive sandwich shop. Wife and I split a delicious Mushroom Cheese Steak Sub. Service was friendly and fast. Great spot.
google avatar

Beatrice V.

Yelp
This place feels like your small hole-in-the-wall neighborhood sandwich joint, but it's a chain! Kind of a narrow entryway when you walk in, they prepare the subs on the other side of the counter. Further in, there's seating and they have TVs playing. The staff are super welcoming and friendly. They have tons of options on their menu. We tried the #7 ("Roethlisburger") - a sausage and burger juggernaut topped with an egg. We also tried the Santucci (#27) - Italian meats with peppers, mushrooms and onions. We ordered both without cheese. Both subs were super delicious! If I had to pick a favorite, I'd probably go with the Santucci. Just overall delicious sub. Both were great though. Big portions too, a full sub will definitely leave you feeling full!

Yelp
I was in Pittsburgh for a conference and wanted something quick but filling and Peppi's was the best. The employees were extremely friendly and created a welcoming environment. They wrapped up the other half of my sub so I could take it with me and checked in to make sure we were enjoying. Prices are super fair and I would definitely come back if i'm in the area

Yelp
Great spot for really good food. Music from Debbie Gibson, Ratt and a country song as well! Cheesesteak made perfectly. Give them a visit of your in town and shopping. Service friendly and prompt.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
I'm a semi-regular at peppi's on the north side, but surprisingly, first time at this location in the strip district. Pretty equally efficient. Sandwich was consistent to what I often get at the other location. The santucci is a great take on an Italian and you have to say "of course" when asked if you want the hot pepper relish on it. Friendly staff. Delicious subs. In my personal internal struggle against uncle Sam's subs, I give them a tie on their take on steak subs but Peppi's wins on the Italian side of things.

Yelp
Fun food and down to earth sandwiches on Mancini bread. The bread is soft and chewy and supple and the insides for the steak with onions and egg and mushrooms and tomato and lettuce w mayo taste great together. A unique food experience for subs. Must try on the Penn Avenue strip full of stores. The only gripe I have is that there was very little meat and insides so I was disappointed when I saw that 3" of my sandwich had really nothing in it but shredded lettuce and bread.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in form Kansas City for a Pirates game and grabbed a couple of sandwiches before we headed to our next stop. Excellent!!!!! We ended up having leftovers and they were even great cold on the road. Next time we are in Pittsburgh we will be by again . Cheese, caramelized onions, mushrooms , soft yummy bread can't be beat !

Kathy G.

Yelp
Awesome food and people loved it Was amazing lots of food.I will come back .yummmmmmmmmy

Yelp
One of the few opened lunch spots on the strip that didn't have a tremendous wait. I ordered a sausage provolone sandwich and my husband a pizza steak sub, We asked for some of the inside bread to be torn out. The inside bread was not torn out, I removed some of the excess bread & didn't have much meat inside; it was mostly bread. Sandwiches weren't very tasty, not much flavor. My hands & feet swelled up terribly afterwards from all the salt! There's a soda fountain and we enjoy some ice cold water and comfortable seats. Very reasonable prices all of this subs for under $10 and most that were in the fall of fame as well. There are two other Pepsi's in Pittsburgh, one another on the Northside and the third on Point Breeze.

Yelp
Peppi's is totally a local hole in the wall that's always busy. It also feels like you went back 40 years in time, as the old lady at the front answers the rotary phone and takes orders down with a pencil. Besides people using their cell phones, you wouldn't have guessed it was 2023 by any other factor. I dont know if its like this at their other locations though. The wall is adorned with history and the characters of the neighborhood. Clearly this place has been around for quite some time. I recommend you order ahead of time. It took about 30 minutes to get my sandwich, so it's not as quick I would have expected. I ordered the no 7, also named the Roethlis burger, and it was like no other sandwich I've had. The hamburger, sausage, grilled onions, and egg are a winning combo. I thought the cold lettuce and tomatoes would be gross, but as long as you're eating it right away, it's actually refreshing! The hoagie rolls are soft yet still have a dense chew to them. I thought I was gonna be stuffed to the gills, but I managed to eat the whole sandwich.

Bryan C.

Yelp
Came back for the Blazin Saddle. Spicy, flavorful, so satisfying. A new favorite. Get it with fried onions, banana peppers
google avatar

Grace K.

Yelp
Now THIS is a sandwich!! Don't let all the Pittsburgh sandwich hype go to primantis when PEPPIS is where it's at!! Frickin delicious. Sooo many options! I def recommend adding all the additional toppings they offer.
google avatar

Blake S.

Yelp
Pretty disappointed with our food. Staff was friendly. We had franko, phillysteak and fries, ugh.
google avatar

Steve P.

Yelp
Ordered through Grubhub. Sandwich was tasteless. None of the add ons I ordered (hot peppers, Italian dressing) were included. I also asked for napkins and utensils, but none were provided. And take a look at the tomato slice. Someone actually looked at that when making this sandwich and said, "yeah that's a good looking tomato...I'd put that on my sandwich". Delivery driver left bag in hotel lobby instead of bringing it to the room. I tried calling him and his number was disconnected. Awful customer experience. Save your money and don't buy Poopi's.

Yelp
https://www.newsbreakapp.com/n/0iOdtotj?pd=0DRCV7p8&lang=en_US&s=i3 Congratulations to Lou, and the Peppi's family of employees. What a great recognition of a fabulous sandwich/sub shop! Pittsburgh - This Is The Best Sub Sandwich Store In Pennsylvania

Yelp
Best sandwiches in the Strip. Great staff, hole in the wall sandwich shop that never misses.
google avatar

Yelp
If you want a true yinzer experience you gotta try this place out! Small but charming, you might even find yourself sitting in a church pew while dining. The menu is displayed as soon as you walk in, and then you place your order at the counter. The lady that placed our order was very friendly and helpful. She really brought a warmth to the joint. Once you place your order you get a ticket with a number and can take a seat. The seating is not fancy by any means, but what it doesn't lack is character. You will see pictures displayed on the walls of all the notables as well as some other fun pop culture. As the orders become ready they call out the ticket numbers, and then will bring the food to your table for you. We both ordered cheese fries which were fantastic! They were fresh cut and reminded me of the potato patch fries from Kennywood. By far my favorite part of the meal. I also had a cheese steak served on Mancini bread of course. My boyfriend went with the south Philly and loved it. We didn' t regret stoping by here and will definitely be back!

Yelp
The Sicilian is out of this world. Fries are pretty good. Nice little hole in the wall place to visit.

Hardcase

Yelp
Excellent meal, great service. I highly recommend the steak sub. The bread is fresh as well.

Roz B.

Yelp
Delicious steak sub. Freshly prepared. Very busy yet staff friendly and patient. Loved being in a locals' eatery. I'm visiting from UK and loved the ambience. Highly recommended.

Larry H.

Yelp
Best sandwich I've ever had. Italian special. Great place. Lots of fun. Can't wait to go back
google avatar

Yelp
Place is great for eating there. Unstoppable eating there I might say. Good amount of seating inside the restaurant and they're quick to get your sandwich made and to you so you get on eating and get outa there. Now they can be a little blunt/ maybe borderline rude. I just chalk that up to the NY deli/ Philly steak experience. No funny questions if there's a line. Look at the menu, order, pay, and enjoy. Their sandwiches to go do not hold Heat well and degrade the enjoyment of eating these sandwiches. Only reason for a 4. An aluminum wrapper may fix this. Notably Great Sandwiches here from my last couple visits. 1. The Whiz 2. The Special Italian 3. The Special Steak CASH IS KING HERE. No cards sorry. They do have an ATM. Get the money out before you order. Remember no funny business here. Eat there 10/10. Take it to go; depends on how far your taking it bro.
google avatar

Alma R.

Yelp
First time visiting from California and this is by far the best subs sandwiches I've had but let me not forget the fries, are just as delicious.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
The cheesesteaks are excellent. Cheesesteak lovers say the key to a good cheesesteak is the bread and Peppi's exceeds expectations by using fresh baked Mancini's bread from the bakery which is literally next door. You just can't get any fresher than than that. My brother-in-law who is a diehard Philly cheesesteak connoisseur said it was ine of the best cheesesteaks he's ever had although he still rates Delasondro's as the best. With such a good recommendation why only three stars? The music. The sound was turned up so high we literally couldn't hear each other talking at the table and we were the only ones eating in. The speakers were so overloaded that you could hear them buzzing. Although they initially lowered the volume a little when I asked, we noticed that the volume had crept back up to near maximum (I'm assuming there was an "11" on the volume control) by the halfway point of our meal. Although I would recommend take-out from Peppi's I would never take friends or acquaintances there.
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
Wow what a steak and eggs hoagie I normally get. This is the other type of steak hoagie call the heater comes with exter steak meat and barbecue sauce and if you like toppings it's your choice but I usually just get mine with cheese it's experience no other place can give you they even have fresh cut fries and also Cajun french fries which Cajun French fries is what I choose to get this place is untouchable and they got the best food for the best money that you can buy and if you can't eat at all they will wrap it up and let you take your doggy bag home want a place and the owner with all the orders he has ever taken he still remembers what I get and only come across him a few times it's hard to believe but what a restaurant it's a place you must check out for yourself.
google avatar

Yelp
This is an old school burger shop. I'm talking old school. Now I don't know the history of the place, but judging by the atmosphere I'd say they've been around awhile. (See pics). This restaurant was Smart, took advantage of the local teams rejuvenated franchise led by a guy with the last name Roethlisberger. They made a huge hamburger, named it The Rothlisburger aka Rookie of the year. Made with sausage and burger on a hoagie bun. The NFL sat Chris Berman and Big Ben down and filmed them eating this massive Burger....... I witnessed this and told myself I would eat one of these things one day...... 15 years later, I got the chance. I pride myself on my burger reviews. I eat ALOT of them.... I love them. So naturally since I was in town, I tracked the iconic burger down. It was not nearly as big as I expected. But it was delicious. I finished it and instantly wished I had ordered fries too. I walked about a mile to get to this location.... Found out there are 3 shops in the Pittsburgh area and that I was not at the original. Service was great. I'll be doing my research if I return, I wanted to go to the original birth place of this burger.
google avatar

Keenan A.

Yelp
We ordered a lunch take out of a Tuna Melt and a chicken salad. I had no idea how big the hoagies were (or that the tuna melt was a hoagie). Bothe were delicious and generously portioned. The service was prompt and efficient. The store is clean and as you'd expect for a deli in the strip. Will return:)
google avatar

Aaron Z.

Yelp
My wife and I biked here from Millvale on a Sunday afternoon. I have been to Peppis a few years ago and finding a coupon in the enjoy book for a bogo was plenty of incentive to go back. My wife and I each had the Italian sub and a side of large fries. I love that they do fresh cut fries here. Ours came out hot and in need of a little salt which was available on the table. The sandwiches are huge and we both pigged out and ate it all. The sub is a good balance of salty lunch meat, bread, toppings, and dressing. The price is extremely reasonable as well. I didn't realize how much I missed this place. Will need to go back again sometime soon!
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
Glad to be back after my old ex co worker told me about this place. Son and I are trying this place as Primantis around the corner a long line and still waiting for our foods. Cheesesteak w/o Mayo for me and my son got the New Yorker chz steak style. I hope he likes it!

Q B.

Yelp
Fire food great customer service I would def recommend. Gives me a authentic Philly cheese steak vibe

David R.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and good service. Recommend going to the outdoor beer hall across the street to enjoy the sandwich with a beer.

Jed C.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and was immediately greeted by most of the staff. Back To Life by Soul II Soul was playing over the speakers so naturally we walked in with a little groove, and the guy behind the counter said "Oh, you're walking in here with some groove! I like that! I'm takin' care of y'all today!" I ordered a Regular Italian (which was incredible) and he knocked 20% off the bill for our groove! The food got out quick and tasted great. Super friendly atmosphere and the staff is lighthearted, funny, and helpful. Totally recommend over Primanti Bros when in Pittsburgh.
google avatar

Meg P.

Yelp
We stopped in on a whim while shopping in the Strip - great decision! Peppi's has old school charm and the staff to go along with it. One of the cooks noticed us reading the menu outside and gestured us in - it was quite cold outside and he insisted we warm up while we perused it before deciding to order. I had the Hot Sausage Special and my fiance had the New Blazin Saddle - both were delicious. Their bread is from Mancini's and totally makes the sandwich. We had a side of fries, which were also good - larger fries, darker and crispy - the way fries should be! The sandwiches are huge, a lot of bang for your buck. They are currently take out only due to the pandemic. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Teri S.

Yelp
Stopped in after shopping the strip. Strictly take out. Sister got the mushroom cheesesteak, her hubby got the cheesesteak with grilled onions and fries, I got the mushroom cheesesteak with grilled onions. It was delicious. I could only eat half. I took the other half home and ate it as a late night snack. Delish!
google avatar

Lexy M.

Yelp
Really solid place! I can't eat bread so I just ate the meat which was really good :) I liked it and will be back. My only complaint was slow service.

Debbie G.

Yelp
Love this place always happy with service. The sandwiches are great...................... No ambiance but who cares it's all take out
