Yelp
Just visited for the first time!
Five stars for the waitstaff- they were prompt, helpful, and all around great.
Also, their patio was designed well and I'm so glad to see a business taking advantage of the widened sidewalks that the extended Livernois construction a few years ago brought. We ended up sitting inside but I imagine that sipping a cocktail out there would be lovely.
My wife reported that her standard margarita was well-executed - always nice when a restaurant pulls off a classic.
I really enjoyed the elote (corn on the cob) and would definitely get it again. Request an extra napkin because it's slathered in delicious, messy sauce and if you're me, you won't care how much juice is running down your chin while you feast.
Why not five stars? A few things that I hope will be sorted out as this restaurant gets settled: the drink menu is literally all alcohol, so there's not much for the designated driver or sober folks to enjoy. I inquired and they said that there was some kind of strawberry lemonade that wasn't on the menu and our server wasn't sure exactly what was in (I have some food intolerances so I didn't risk it). BUT based on the cocktail menu, this place could probably pull off an excellent house zero proof once they get rolling (or I'd love to see agua de jamaica or horchata or a seasonal agua de fruta). On a related note, I ordered the veggie fajitas and ended up with a couple pieces of chicken on my plate. Not a huge deal if you don't have food allergies, but for those worried about cross contamination, this place may not be the best choice. Also, the way their menu is set up is quite confusing- the server and I had to go around multiple times on what a protein is and why I couldn't just order the street tacos and had to add an additional item. So here's the scoop, so you won't have to ask: the tacos don't come with any actual filling until you select your up charged add-on (chicken, fish, shrimp, steak, etc) and also there's a secret, non-listed option to get a veggie taco (unclear if there's an add-on charge for that - I gave up and ordered the fajitas). Like most standard American Mexican restaurants, entrees do come with rice and beans so you can theoretically fill your taco with those but I felt like our server didn't recommend it.
This food is NOT Mexican- it's most Cali-Mex with a little Tex-Mex thrown in for good measure, with the exception of the elote. The salsa is White people salsa, intended for eating with chips, not for adding seasoning to your food. I couldn't figure out how to actually add flavor to my fajitas, as neither the pico de gallo that came with them, the guacamole, nor the salsa I requested had heat in them, so it was basically just vegetables wrapped in a flour tortilla. The veggies were cooked well and I appreciated the healthy option. My wife said that her shrimp was great and she recommends the shrimp fajitas.
Overall, set your expectations for Cali-Mex and you'll have a great time. I hope this restaurant is able to stay in business and make some updates.
