Beware hidden fees! My family and were are semi-regulars until today. After ordering everything for our family, I saw the subtotal and then when the cashier hit the button to check out it jumped so I texted myself the receipt. I never thought to look before. Despite that we only purchased food & beverages, we were charged an additional retail tax (did not buy any retail items). Then we were charged a 10% service fee (?!) on top of that subtotal. And then of course I tipped on top of that amount. Didn't see this till we got home and I tried to call the shop to ask what this was. Phone calls go directly to voicemail, which is full so I couldn't even leave a voicemessage. Like a lot of DC residents, I lost my job in the DOGE fiasco and as dumb as it sounds, coffee is my family's #1 treat. We don't go on vacation or shopping for fun, we don't eat out or go to the movies or concerts. So yeah, these weird hidden fees with no explanation and no way to ask about it short of physically going all the way back to the shop and asking in front of everyone... pissed me off.
Peregrine's coffee is good, but the coffee at La Colombe in REI is better and they don't have hidden fees. Bread & Wine at Lincoln Park is also good, much cheaper, and they have a better loyalty program.
