A beloved open-air produce market since 1970, known for the fill-a-bag deal and local products. After a brief June pause, WRAL confirmed its June 18, 2025 reopening; Discover Durham also spotlights it as a community favorite.

Love this place. The $25 bag is genius. The staff and owner are very friendly and knowledgeable. I love supporting a Black owned business and local farmers.

Google
One of my favorite places in Durham! Owner is kind, as are all the employees. Everyone is helpful. Produce is amazing! If you haven’t been, do yourself a favor and check it out!

I had a great time learning about this place and looking through all of the options. I am excited to check out the meat area next time and come back for the $25 back + one free item (which i did today as well). The free item this week was heavy cream, butter, or a pineapple! You can definitely save money doing the bag deal which gets filled up until the handle breaks! There are also free herbs like mint, rosemary, cilantro and one other. It is also family owned! I made agua de jamaica as well all from this stand. Right now is also off season so something to remember “If it grows, it goes” is the policy for the bag lol!

Google
What a perfect place to buy a Christmas tree!!! I'm kicking myself for not getting here sooner. I love supporting local and the produce was GORGEOUS!!! They had everything down to the cinnamon for apple cider. The $25 bag deal is amazing (the bag looks small, but I definitely got my money's worth!). I'm thinking this may be my new spot for ALL my produce!

Carol Caffee

Google
Black owned local business and local produce. Out of butter beans and peas but beautiful green beans. I got a full bag for $25 plus they always have a free item. It weighed 8.5 lbs This time there were five choices! I chose a dozen free range eggs.

We had a wonderful time at Perkins Orchard this past Saturday. We even got to meet the owner! It’s hard to imagine running all this in your early 30s, but he’s been doing it for years. We were in Raleigh for another reason and decided to stop by because of all the great reviews. I got cantaloupe, nectarines, grapes, oranges, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, carrots, eggs, beef and pork. The cantaloupe was one of the sweetest I had in a long time! I love the $25 bag that you get to fill with whatever produce you like. I haven’t tried the meat yet, but the eggs were good too. The carton said XL, but I think they were jumbo. I always buy local eggs, but they aren’t usually this large. The golden yolks and size were definitely worth the price. I wish it was closer, because I would definitely go all the time. That being said will definitely stop by next time in in the area. Thank you so much for keeping this place alive, my only regret is not getting the watermelon too!

Google
I love Perkins Orchard. All the employees are kind and Donovan is so passionate about his work, it's a joy to interact with him. The produce is great and fresh, and often local. The $25 bag deal is amazing value, and a nice way to save everyone time from having to ring up a bunch of individual items. There's so much more than produce, there's a darling little dry goods store on the property as well.

Google
Wonderful place! Excellent service and the produce is ALWAYS Fresh!! Often times you will see the owner, and he is the friendliest guy you will ever meet! Every worker is pleasant and kind. We enjoy Perkins Orchard due to it's location, accessibility, affordability and the kindness of the staff. I hope they stay around forever! They will ALWAYS have my support!

Yelp
I've been to Perkins for the fill-your-own bag special! The produce is delicious, the staff is knowledgeable and the facility is clean. I strongly recommend!

Yelp
Everyone should be grocery shopping here. $25 produce bags plus a free item are a good deal. This place is amazing and locally owned and operated. I feel cared for when I get produce from here and they don't mind me overfilling my produce bag. Eggs, cheeses, local and seasonal produce, and ready-made items always have my food and skin on 10/10. I come here every week.
google avatar

Peggy V.

Yelp
The vegetables and fruit are amazingly good!!! Going to pick up blueberries here today they have great prices
google avatar

Yelp
Owner Donovan and his staff are wonderful. The produce is top quality and the freebies are appreciated. I've been a customer for 5+ years now.

Yelp
I love this Market, I come from Raleigh just to get this fresh fruit and vegetables. The service is wonderful and truly love supporting this local market. Donavan is has such a wonderful spirit and is personable with his guest. I haven't bought fruit or vegetables from nowhere since i found this market. Sheila B.

Yelp
Perkins Orchard has a great selection of produce! I enjoyed my first visit there on Sunday, and I look forward to going back to support a local business. I ate my first peach from there this morning, and it was awesome!

Yelp
I'm a fan of Perkins! I think the $25 bag deal is the way to go. You can fill up your bag and select one of the free items they have going that week to accompany your bag. They have a good variety of produce and all the employees were friendly when I was in. I see a lot of folks mentioning price, but of course you could get quite a few things cheaper at the grocery store, but who knows how far it's travelled to hit those shelves. I appreciate how the owner here prioritizes local farms and supporting local businesses. The pumpkin wagon deal is probably the best deal they have all year. Those fancy pumpkins are expensive everywhere and if you need a bunch of them Perkins is the spot to go!

Allison C.

Yelp
I appreciate the produce but prices are high and the employee was rude in the way she spoke to me. I expressed a concern and I was told "to respect the owner". I was not complaining just expressing something I was confused about and how I could correct myself for next time. Walked away feeling about 1 foot tall - to be a community promoted establishment, the customer service to develop relationships with the community is lacking.

Yelp
I simply can't say enough great things about Perkins Orchard. There is such a large variety of produce to choose from and of course they change sometimes mostly depending on what is in season but it's always fresh and delicious. Our go to is the $25 grab bag deal where you fill it with your choice of items and they really mean fill it if you don't they will ask if you want to grab more. They also give you a free item and normally there are three choices to pick from. We normally pick the 12ct of farm fresh eggs. They are definitely trying to ensure you get the most bang for your buck. The property is absolutely beautiful especially during the fall when all the pumpkins come out. In the summer they sell homemade popsicles and sorbet that is so freaking delicious. They also sell other local products so make sure to stop in the little store to look around. The true gold is Donovan and his staff who are absolutely top tier. Our first time in Donovan gave us a beautiful passionate speech about his grandfather and how Perkins has became one of the oldest and largest privately owned produce markets in NC. Now when we come in we are recognized by staff as regulars and always greeted with a friendly smile. Truly feels like family. We love supporting local businesses and black owned businesses but we especially love supporting Donovan and his mission.

Kay B.

Yelp
If you're in the Triangle, visiting Perkins Orchard is an absolute must. They offer the freshest produce, unbeatable deals, and the kind of friendly service that makes you feel right at home. Supporting local has never felt so good--especially when the owner is right there, greeting guests and working hard to feed the Durham community. Truly, Perkins is one of my favorite things about living in the triangle. It's more than a fruit stand--it's a local treasure.
google avatar

Gail M.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! I am so impressed with Donavan and his extremely hard work and dedication to carry on his Grandfather's legacy! What you will find here is the best and freshest vegetables around, at affordable prices! I will go there instead of the Farmers Market! Give it a try, they are open 7 days a week!!! You will not be disappointed!!

Daniela S.

Yelp
We need more local produce stands like this around! What a gem to find! The owner explained his family's history and was very kind and generous. You get a big bang for your buck!

J C.

Yelp
I got reprimanded today by the owner for being "disrespectful" when I asked where I could get a bag today for some produce. Not sure what's up, but the owner talked nonstop and got angry when I asked a simple question.

Val E.

Yelp
Donovan is the owner and he's very kind. He takes pride in his locally owned black business and he has so much to be proud about! His $25 bag deal with a free item is a steal! I swear I'll never get veggies from the grocery store, he has most of all the veggies I need for the week. His instagram has the most up to date news, they're open 7 days a week, and I love telling new friends to visit! He also has local eggs, meats, and jelly and preserves! 10/10 recommend!
google avatar

Ronda S.

Yelp
Owner is very informative, told me the history of his business. Great apples. I'll be back.

Yelp
Wow. What a great place to go. Beautiful grounds and great prices. They have a lot of fresh foods. They also work with many other local people. Try this place out. They gave us a nice tour of the place. Bring your whole family

Zacki M.

Yelp
Convenient with being 5 minutes away! Know Alex and his grandmother for years. Fun to see how PO has expanded!

Olivia T.

Yelp
Amazing place with fresh produce and the workers are extremely nice and welcoming! Everything looked (and tasted) fresh and delicious we will most definitely come back. I'd rather buy from here than the chain grocery stores any day. You can taste the difference and their pricing is super honest and fair.
google avatar

Yelp
I finally made here! I have driven by this place many times over the years but I always miss the turn. This is a must see produce/ farm-Iike experience. Everything is local and most importantly, this is a black owned institution here in Durham. Their mum baskets were absolutely Stunning! And pumpkins galore! I got an entire bag of produce for $25 and some delicious cupcakes from the country store which carries locally sourced desserts, snacks, pantry items and meat/fish. They take credit cards! Don't forget to ask for a quick tour if it's your first time.
google avatar

Cyn M.

Yelp
Love this produce stand and market shop! We visit regularly for the $25 produce bag and often grab a few new local products while we're at it. Great atmosphere and service.

Yelp
They have beautiful fruit and vegetables for sale. They have a $25 bag. You get to fill it up with the things you want and then they always have a free item. They sale frozen lamb, beef and other meat. They also have fresh eggs, sea moss, teas, cooked turkey bbq as well as cake slices and cup cake.

Calientebabe C.

Yelp
Went to Perkins Orchard again this morning and the owner Donavan was at his usual hard work again. The produce is always well organized and fresh, and I managed to pull up while he was unloading those delicious watermelons. Family is coming to town, so I purchased a few for them to take back to the DMV. Donavan is always so kind, courteous, and professional, and I will be returning. I look forward to purchasing the $25 fill up to the top bag weekly.

Sulai C.

Yelp
The freshest produce and a charming, beautifully kept place. They had a $25 offer so you could fill a bag and the owner was adorable and said, your bag is lame and you need to add more stuff! Lol Can't wait to be back.

Yelp
A hidden treasure in south Durham! Get beautiful fruit and Veggies while enjoying a uniquely southern mainstay- a fruit stand on steroids. Watermelon, peaches, mango, apples, beans, tomatoes. Then visit the "store" for packaged items, meats, jams, jellies, snacks, cold drinks! No pics but take my word for it, you will want to go here. Get the tour!

Yelp
Perkins Orchard @perkinsorchard is unlike any place you've experienced. A place to come and unwind from the everyday hustle of the Triangle. This is a Black Owned Business located in Durham, NC. You can visit early in the morning or after rush hour we are the only such place open 7 days a week from 9:00am - 8:00 pm. They offer seating & areas to roam while enjoying your lunch or some of our delicious fruit edibles. They have over 300 farms mostly in North Carolina & surrounding states alongside our once vast fruit orchard around our house hence the name Perkins Orchard! The fact that most of the produce sits in the same environment it grows in makes it all sweeter! We are your one stop shop for local eggs, cheese, meats, jargoods, honey, greens, herbs, flowers, fruits, vegetables, Pumpkins, Christmas Trees, Wreaths, Ciders, & So much More! Yelp
I'm glad I only lived in Durham for a month before I found out about this open secret. I had been wondering where all the good produce was and hopping from grocery store to grocery store to find out. The answer is Perkins (and Wegmans and Li Ming, but for LOCAL produce it's definitely Perkins). We went for the $99 pumpkin cart deal (and managed to fit 17 pumpkins) but were unaware that deal also came with their famous $20 for as much produce as you can fit in your paper bag deal, which in turn ALSO came with another free produce item PLUS a jarred item. At the end of the day I felt like I was ripping them off, but as the lady working there said to me as she showed me how to pack my paper bag more efficiently, they've done the math. Now I just need to figure out how to cook with a wider variety of vegetables. We already figured our oven roasted sweet potato fries and we'd better figure out some tomatillo salsa next.

Yelp
We went to Perkins Orchard on Sunday, September 25 and had a wonderful experience. There is a $99 bag deal that comes with a full wagon of pumpkins, a bag of produce, a watermelon or half gallon of cider and one extra. I chose pickled Asparagus but there were so many options. We also got a few other delicious items we couldn't fit into our produce bag. The experience started with the owner giving us a quick tour to explain how the $99 deal worked and explaining the origins, the growth and the current business that is Perkins Orchard, even why it is called an orchard when it is a big farm stand. My kids and I loved the game of fitting pumpkins into our wagon and our produce bag. We had such a great experience! I did want to address a situation that happened while we were at Perkins because I see that it has resulted in a negative review. While we were there the owner and employees were circulating and nicely staring the rules. Things like, "please don't sit on the pumpkins," "please don't stand on the pumpkins or the palettes," "please don't put the pumpkins on the gravel." He explained that the pumpkins are freshly cut and not cured, so they are fragile. One couple was there with their children and the man completely lost his cool after being asked to have his kids follow the rules. He and his wife were putting their children, about 4 and 7 years old, on the pumpkins to take pictures, the owner asked them to stop and they just moved to another area and kept doing it. Then the little girl was dancing on the palette, kicking at the pumpkins and when the owner asked the dad to get her to stop he said "the kids are little, we don't have control of them." The owner said "you're going to need to get control of your children at my store, they are your children." After that the dad slammed the handle of his wagon down and said "well if that's the case we don't need anything." The owner calmly said "that's fine, maybe this isn't the place for you" and very calmly started walking toward the parking lot. Well. This guy did not like that at ALL. By the end his wife was screaming, he was screaming and my kids and I stood there aghast and watched as they flung their kids into the car and drove off. The owner handled the situation well. He was just trying to protect his inventory and these people thought the rules didn't apply to them! I hope they can find good pumpkins at Food Lion!

Yelp
Absolutely lovely service! And great deals for vegetables. I will be coming back here again next yesr

Yelp
Love this spot! Got a chance to meet the owner who is very knowledgeable. He gives you a tour if it's your first time there. Strawberries were amazing . Loved the deal to fill a bag of produce for $20. Easy to find, parking was no problem. Prices were reasonable for North Carolina grown produce .
google avatar

Nancy N.

Yelp
Wow, how have I never known about this stand? With all the Covid19 craze lately, it's discouraging to go outside at all. Seeking an alternative, I had searched for options for door delivery for produce and all the farms nearby didn't have availability until a month later. But I need my veggies today! Not comfortable with going to the large farmers market with crowds, I sought to look for a small vendor that I could "grab, pay and go!" with having to interact with as little people as possible. That's when I stumbled on an absolute gem, Perkins Orchard. You would never ever know this place existed unless you looked for it and boy am I glad I did. Once I got there, the owner Donovan was quick to introduce himself and give me a tour of the premise, explaining his family legacy and the means in which he gets produce to serve our community. You can instantly tell, the man was very well versed and you can tell he's beyond passionate about produce and his business. At the orchard were papaya, pineapples, green beans, corn, mangoes, plums, all sorts of apples, asparagus, zucchini, jalepenos, and so much more. (Though I was bummed out that there wasn't kale *tear*) What I love the most about Donovan's orchard is his $20/bag sale. Whatever you can put on the bag, is $20 (with the exception of glass, and some other things) I love me a deal when I see one so I did what any person would do, I stuffed the crap outta my bag! As much as I could get to fit, I stuffed. Pro-tip: Jalepenos are great as a filler! And get this, you also get a free box of strawberries with any $20 bag... sweet. Definitely go and check it out. Parking is ample but does have a bit of gravel. The bounty I walked away with made me so very happy! Can't wait to return and do more veggie shopping here. If you're reading this, check it out, support local farmers and eat well!

Yelp
Awesome idea and great service! Everyting fresh and cool! You might run into a long line but what do we expect when a place is poppin'? It's worth the wait. The $20 fill up bag deal is the bomb! Great fresh produce is always the best feeling. They also have other vendors on the land sooo if you love your meat they've got plenty as well as other fruit stands if you're looking for big cantaloupe or watermelon. Great time and great buy!

Alexis C.

Yelp
Been coming for years! Everything is so good and great deals. You can fill a bag full of produce for $20 I believe! Outstanding. Family owned as well!

Sarah A.

Yelp
An interesting collection of fruit + eggs/herbs/etc sourced from local farms. The peaches I had were good. However got some narcissistic vibes from the owner when every customer has to get told a story about him as part of a "tour" and there was a giant poster of his face displayed as well. Note that the eggs are from a farm that debeaks chickens.

Linda B.

Yelp
More often than not the produce is rotten within 1 day and often overpriced. pineapple $4.50 @ target $1.99 @ Food Lion. $1.79
google avatar

Glenn G.

Yelp
We drive by on occasion and we always forget about this place. I follow them on social media and noticed they were still open during the pandemic, providing fruit, vegetables and meat in an open-air setting. Some of the goods are local and regional, and some are obviously not -- like avocadoes. They have a deal to fill a bag for $20, which is great depending on what you get. The day we were there, they were giving out a free pineapple with every bag purchase. They also offered us free cilantro but I have some in my garden. We also got some locally-made chorizo from their meat vendor -- not the best we've had but not bad. We will consider them again for future produce purchases.
google avatar

Ciarra J.

Yelp
Excellent experience! Owner was present and gave us a full tour, the history is beautiful. Family owned and locally sourced. The best part for $20 fill your bag we thought we filled ours enough but they told us to keep going! I love a place were your money is appreciated. A farmer was even present who grows the famous watermelon. We got two free items and I'm still not sure why! Christmas trees will be in soon! Wonderful variety of apples right now until November.
google avatar

Tyneshia S.

Yelp
Let me just start by saying, I'm very mad at myself. I've been in Durham since 2003 and this is my first time visiting Perkins Orchard. I love the homey atmosphere of the fruit stand. All of the employees were extremely nice. We were greeted by the owner with a tour and a warm welcome. The variety of items were very impressive. When I went they had a $20/peck sale. So we were able to fill up a bag full of fruits and vegetables. I literally was able to get grapes, peaches, plums, zucchini, squash, and tomatoes. With the $20 bag, we even got to choose between a free cantaloupe or watermelon. We chose to get a huge seedless watermelon. I'll definitely be going back next week. I think I got a weeks worth of produce for $20. I'm going there forever for produce!
google avatar

Lana L.

Yelp
Perkins is very humbly called a produce stand. It's really so much more! Stopped by after work a couple weeks ago for some eggs, avocados, strawberries (which smelled amazing), "mountain jalapeño hot" cheese, and blueberry cider (!). Items were a little pricier than your average grocery store. My total came out to about $30. You can also find cucumbers, garlic, broccoli, kiwis, pineapple, apples, tomatoes, fruit pops, potatoes, watermelon, jelly, honey, peaches, and much more. This is a family business. The owner, Donovan, is young and passionate, and eager to tell customers about the history of the orchard. Entrance can be easy to miss since it's in a residential neighborhood and the entrance is narrow. There is a parking lot once you drive in. Their hours from April through December are 9am to 8pm daily. (My actual rating is a 4.5/5. Not a 5 because I was overcharged for my cheese.)
google avatar

William T.

Yelp
There folks giving him a bad review for their kids not listening and following rules! Donovan is an awesome owner, great place to shop and excellent customer service.. just be responsible parents and keep your kids in check.

Sman S.

Yelp
Worst experience if you have kids . There is a guy with orange t shirt just 30 years old himself who claims to be the owner who wants kids to behave like adults and is constantly scolding kids without parents knowledge . When we intervened , he got offended . Unfortunately there is many negative reviews about him which I saw later post our worst visit , so please read the negative reviews before you even consider and ruin your day . He considers kids touching anything like pumpkin or the cart as destroying the property . Not a place for family to go . Avoid at any cost . Worst experience for the first time . I don't generally write reviews but I am forced to do so for other families to be careful with these kind of places . Kids just helped us in loading the pumpkins and took couple of pics which the so called 30 year owner felt they should not touch anything and it's considered as destroying the property . He was very mean to all kids . Also he misbehaved with my wife as well by saying this is my property and I can object anyone even if they are kids . Later one of the lady employee there came and apologized on behalf of him saying he was very rude and hope we don't leave a negative remark . She also mentioned that she had kids and understand what he was doing was unethical . Hope he understands how to behave with families with kids in future . Unfortunately many people don't leave reviews but I had to do to alert families .

Yelp
A visit to Perkins Orchard this fall is a MUST! Perkins is the largest and oldest food Market in North Carolina. Perkins is open 7 days a week. In addition to fresh produce, in the fall, Perkins has a pumpkins and mums to pick!
google avatar

Larry H.

Yelp
Nice produce. Nice atmosphere and very reasonable prices for fresh fruits and vegetables. It's definitely worthy of taking the place of the grocery store when it comes to produce.

Tina C.

Yelp
Friendly and consistent. I go weekly; it's my happy place. Herbs are always free, and customers always get a few items.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
I use to shop here occasionally when they had their produce stand right at the top of the driveway. I've been meaning to stop since they moved it down into the backyard and finally did. I had no idea it would be so BIG! Right now they have several displays where you can choose your own pumpkins in all kinds of sizes. They also have jugs of apple cider and cherry cider, eggs and cheeses. Every week they have a deal where you can fill a bag with produce for $20 and you got to choose one item from a variety for free. The young owner and his sidekick are super nice, helpful, and well informed on everything they're selling. Bonus - on the weekends they have at least two local vendors selling items like homemade sweets, meat, and more. I think this is going to become my regular stop for all things fresh and good!
google avatar

April J.

Yelp
Best local farmers stand in Durham county! I'm a regular. They have now added a local meat store.
google avatar

Teresa N.

Yelp
I will never go back. Really bad experience. Employees not wearing masks. There is a required tour for first timers where social distancing was not possible. Employee doing tour was quite condescending when I was having a panic attack about lack care for current conditions related to COVID-19. BTW-this is not an orchard. This is a small produce stand. I prefer to drive to Raleigh to the NC Farmer's market.
google avatar

Kathy B.

Yelp
First of all I got some of the sweetest peaches I have ever had! I'm from North Carolina and I know sweet peaches. The $20 bag deal is great. You get a bag and purchase any fruit and vegetables that fit in it for $20. The grapes, plums, corn, and squash were good and fresh. It was great to see the young owner working- hard. Things are always better when the owner is present. I over-stuffed my bag and dropped some corn when walking out. The owner said "I got it..." and came over to pick up my corn. He then reached around and gave me another ear of corn! The property is nice with hardwood trees providing shade, nice customers, and young people anticipating your needs before offering help. Healthy, cost-effective and non genetically-modified fruits and vegetables make this one of Durham's jewels.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Love this place- produce for a great price and great customer service. Got everything pictured for only $25!

Brian S.

Yelp
I enjoy going to this unique farm stand with quite a history. Great for eggs, veggies, apples and meat when they have it. Lots of other food stuffs to try. The staff is friendly and helpful. I feel the quality is better the chain stores.
