The Best Restaurants on San Francisco’s Embarcadero | Eater SF

"This classic after-work haunt is packed with happy hour drinkers and diners chowing down on Perry’s burgers. Expect pleasing pub food like potato skins and fried calamari, with hearty dinners like pot roast and spaghetti with meatballs. It’s also a pleasant destination for brunch on the patio, which overlooks the Bay Bridge." - Eater Staff

The San Francisco Legacy Businesses to Add to Your Eating and Drinking List | Eater SF

"This waterfront restaurant may have started on Union Street, but it’s hard to knock the outstanding views of the Bay Bridge that come alongside the fare at the Embarcadero location of Perry’s. The weekend brunch, starring eggs Benedicts and corned beef hash, is not to be missed." - Paolo Bicchieri

What a great place to have brunch. Went with two friends for a 130pm reservation on a Saturday. We had a table outside overlooking the bay and Bay Bridge. We were seated quickly. The entire restaurant was very beautiful. The food came out quickly. It was delicious but sorta small on portion size. We chatted for an hour and a half. I def would recommend going here for brunch!

Perry’s is one of my favorite places! I always order the same three things: the French onion soup, the beet arugula and spinach salad with goat cheese croquettes, and an espresso martini. If you’ve seen my other posts, you know I’m a sucker for a good French onion soup- and I can honestly say this place knows what they’re doing!

Google
A lovely place with very professional attentive stuff and great food - we had grilled salmon with Israeli couscous, a smash burger and deviled eggs (they disappeared immediately :)) Couscous was just perfect - oily, springy little pearls with dots of diced sweet peppers and some sautéed spinach, a big pillowy bed for a juicy grilled salmon filet. Love from the first bite! The house red wine was full bodied and chocolatey :) Why three stars for the atmosphere? I personally don't like people walking next to the tables, but if you don't mind it - you'll love the place since the view is magnificent!

Google
We came here for dinner recently. It's a very nice restaurant with great views of the waterfront. Service was a little slow getting us our drinks and dessert. We ordered the roasted half chicken and the sole meuniere. For dessert we ordered the strawberry cake.

Google
Got the chicken burger with sweet potato fries - food was decent, but the cozy vibe and patio seating with panoramic Bay Bridge views totally made up for it. I’d definitely come back just for the experience and the view alone.

I made reservations a couple months back for our first dinner in SF. Although it's a casual place, based on my research, it seemed like a popular neighborhood and tourist spot and I knew after driving up from OC we didn't want to wait to eat on a busy Friday evening. Upon arrival, it didn't seem too crowded. Busy but there were still plenty of open tables and spots at the bar. I initially requested patio seating but my husband and son didn't want to be outside as it was slightly balmy. We were seated close to the windows instead to enjoy the view of the Bay Bridge. We ordered the following: - French Onion Soup: very good. Nice and cheesy, could use maybe some more bread underneath but it was solid. - Buffalo Wings: these come sauced and were really tasty! Still had a nice crunch and bite to it even though they were very saucy. - Fish & Chips: great batter on the fish, which was very meaty and flaky. Standard fries, forgettable coleslaw (does anyone even eat the coleslaw?) - Chicken BLTA: husband said this was fine. Tastes as expected! - Kids' Chicken Tenders: not sure if these are the same tenders on the regular menu but my son ate it all up and had no complaints. - Apple Brown Betty: this was a cinnamon apple crumble pie w/ vanilla ice cream on top. Very rice and delicious! - Strawberry Cake: this was literally the same cake you can get at Ralph's/Safeway, etc. They must all get it from the same supplier! Still good but def not made in-house. Total for dinner (including 3 glasses of wine, a Shirley Temple, a coffee, and tax/tip) was $205. Service was very good. Our server came by often enough and was always pleasant. Note - we entered the restaurant through the Hotel Griffon on Steuart Street. I think there might be an entrance on the Embarcadero side, too.

Perry's on the Embarcadero, located at 155 Steuart Street, is a great spot close to my workplace. It offers more than just a beautiful waterfront view. Since its opening in 2008, Perry's has built on the tradition of the original Perry's on Union Street, which started in 1969. The aim was to bring a classic New York bar and grill feel to San Francisco. The restaurant has a rustic interior with exposed brick and offers a flexible dining experience. I have enjoyed after-work drinks and farewell gatherings here. The spacious corner seating comfortably accommodates our group of twenty or more, along with great service and tasty small bites. Perry's is perfect for many events. Sports fans will like the bar area, which has large TVs and attentive bartenders, so you won’t miss any action. On sunny days, the outdoor seating provides a refreshing atmosphere. Inside, there are cozy tables for smaller groups, and it’s easy to make reservations for larger parties. What sets Perry's apart is the high quality of their classic American dishes, which are made with fresh ingredients. I’ve had many satisfying lunches at the bar, where I could watch live soccer matches while enjoying their reliable menu. Whether it’s a casual lunch, post-work drinks, or a big celebration, Perry's on the Embarcadero offers a pleasant atmosphere, great service, and quality food.

Google
Great service, amazing atmosphere. Food was ok, shortly after we were served the appetizer they brought entree so we didn’t get to enjoy the clam chowder a lot. Me and my partner both got fish and chips and they were ok. It’s worth visiting!

Yelp
After a carby lunch in Union Square and a 10k step walk around the area, a college buddy and I decided to grab....more carbs at Perry's. This time around it would be beers. The Dodgers were in town and the joint was filled with a few fans. My animosity toward the team from SoCal has waned over the decades. Yet, I still wanted to yell at fans, "Take off that hat!!!!". Just kidding. On the upside it was a classy joint and the service was good. Plus, the beers were cold. What more could a couple of old, ugly guys ask for. A tip of the cap to our server who quickly cleaned up a spilled beer when my buddy accident knocked over his half-filled pint glass. Add bonus, the server refilled the glass free-of-charge. Was that heaven or what? I think I found a new watering hole in the City. Perry's made us merry. Now for the pic.

Yelp
Great location off the Embarcadero and walkable from BART. It sits near the Bay Bridge. Outdoor seating offers great people watching. Food and service was fine.

Yelp
Perry's was a nice respite by the embarcadero, but there's not much else around, and their prices reflect that. Simply, it underwhelmed. I got a Manhattan, and a cheese quesadilla, while The Wife had the Mac and cheese and grilled artichoke. All of it tasted fine. But for the money, we could have had something more substantial and enjoyable somewhere else, and should have looked around a bit more. It's a heck of a setting though.

Yelp
Perry's on the Embarcadero is a waterfront extension of the original Perry's, which opened in 1969 on Union Street in San Francisco. Founded by Perry Butler, it aimed to bring the feel of New York's East Side bars and grills to the city. The Embarcadero location at 155 Steuart Street opened in November 2008 and offers classic American dishes. The setting features exposed brick walls and views of the Bay Bridge. As I mentioned in my original review a few years ago, this location is conveniently situated near my workplace, making it an ideal option for lunch, after-work drinks with friends and colleagues, or special occasions like farewell parties for departing coworkers. On this occasion, we gathered to bid farewell to a retiring colleague. We were set up at a great spot in the corner on Steuart Street that accommodated about thirty of us. We enjoyed a beer or two along with some delicious small bites. The service was excellent, as it always is at Perry's, and we all had a wonderful time. If you're looking to catch a game, I recommend sitting at the bar. There are a couple of large TVs that provide a good viewing experience, and the bartenders are always attentive, ensuring great service. On nice days, you might prefer sitting outside on the Embarcadero side. Otherwise, the dining area has plenty of comfortable tables that can accommodate groups of two to four people, and larger groups can make reservations in advance. The food is consistently good and made with fresh ingredients. I have always enjoyed my lunches at the bar while watching live soccer matches on TV.

Yelp
Been here a few times. Most recently had lunch here with my former boss & colleagues. We enjoyed some standard American fare, great conversation and glad for an opportunity to catch up here. The food itself is kinda mid but the location is good. Right near the water. Also easy access to BART for folks living in the East Bay. Service was decent. Located on Steuart between Mission & Howard.

Yelp
Came to Perry's in a large around for happy hour around 4:30ish and I thought the experience was a little lacking. We came on a Wednesday, the place was pretty empty, our group opted out to outside seating. We ordered some drinks with appetizers and the drinks took a while to come, our group ordered a range of beer, cans and bottle beverages. Our appetizers also took it's sweet time, and it came out in waves. If we came during busy time, I understand, it would take time, but it was nearly empty inside and there was 2 groups in their outdoor seating area. We ordered some onion rings, calamari, loaded potatoes and some artichoke dip. I did not try the artichoke, but the onion rings was really oily for me, calamari needed ALOT of sauce, and the loaded potatoes was my favorite item. We opted out of staying for dinner at 6pm and took the party to next door instead. Overall, ok experience for the location and quality of service. It works, but it did not impress me.

Yelp
We are a party of 4 for a quick dinner meet up in San Francisco. Great food with reasonable prices. I ordered the delicious daily special of blackened shrimp over a bed of risotto. The spaghetti and meat balls were a very generous serving. The meatballs were soft and lots of spices so very flavorful. It included a big slice of garlic bread. The 2 sandwiches were prepared properly and arrived hot. This is a very reasonable priced restaurant and located directly across the street from ferry terminal. It was a 5 minute walk if you have to catch the ferry back. We came here on a Tuesday night and not too crowded. I did note there is outdoor seating and this would be a great place to have breakfast on a sunny day in SF.

Yelp
We had a late lunch there the other day and it was a perfect place for lunch and beers after a day walking around SF. Perry's deserves a higher rating but I have to leave some headroom for "haute cuisine" you know. My wife and I split a half chicken and it was the best chicken I have had in a long time. Moist, completely cooked, tender, flavorful, just perfect. It came with excellent mashed potatoes and broccoli rabe and we had fries as well. I ate the mashed and fries too. Our friends enjoyed what they had too, a hamburger, a salad and a chicken BLT. It's an excellent spot when exploring the area. We were deep in the bar but there views by the windows an outdoor tables too.

Yelp
This place has been on my list for a while and I'm so happy I finally went! I entered through the back, so don't park on the Embarcadero if you want to enter through the front. The space reminds me of an old school diner and the staff were super friendly! We ordered a pastrami sandwich, salad, and the french onion soup which were all amazing, especially for the price. Don't skip out on the soup as it was probably the best I've had in the city.
google avatar

Raya K.

Yelp
Came here with some friends after an event late at night, and was glad to see Perry's was still open. Ordered a BLT and enjoyed it, and my friends shrimp linguine was good too
google avatar

Amie A.

Yelp
The best French onion soup you are going to have in your entire life. Seriously. Go there. Get the soup. The burger is good too, rest of the food is very mediocre. But GET THE SOUP. This spot gets pretty rowdy during happy hour since it is surrounded by tech companies. Either way the service is always great at the bar.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
The food, service and ambience were great. Everything was delicious. I will go again.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Went to Perry's for a private party so I'm only reviewing the appetizers passed around by the servers. The food was not good, but I'm adding a star for the service because the servers were all super nice.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
Went for dinner outside in the forty degree temperatures at night over looking the Bay Bridge. The propane heaters kept us toasty warm. I loved the grilled artichoke and my half chicken entree came out as expected. I'd come back for another outdoor experience.

Diadora W.

Yelp
The location was very nice, given that it's close to the piers. The interior design was also very ambient. However, the service was extremely delayed and the food was below average. It was disappointing because there are definitely better spots for the same price anywhere else.
google avatar

Victor T.

Yelp
Quick seating, good service. Solid Burger 7/10 could use more seasoning. Fish and Chips 8/10 crispy batter and flaky fish.
google avatar

Thomas D.

Yelp
Perry's menu is pretty straightforward. There is something for everyone. I've had everything from the Cobb Salad to the Reuben sandwich, and everything has been great. They even make their own potato chips! Service was warm and hospitable. The view of the Bay Bridge is unparalleled. Ask for a table by the back windows or eat outside if the weather is nice. The full bar serves tasty drinks. Brunch is available too. We had the chocolate lava cake for dessert. Prices are reasonable--3 people $116.00. It's located in an inviting spot on Stuart Street. Boulevard and the Harbor Court are nearby.
google avatar

Darrin J.

Yelp
I love Perry's. The staff is always super friendly, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is relaxing. The location I visit the most is Steuart St but the other location is just as good.
google avatar

Vherny R.

Yelp
Just found a hair in my steak and cream of spinach disgusting and I don't know how this place is 4.5 stars. The restaurant was empty. And we thought it was a good place. I am very disgusted
google avatar

Miranda L.

Yelp
Went on a Friday with coworkers for an early happy hour and they were able to accommodate our large table of 14 people after a couple minutes. The restaurant interior is like a rustic modern combo and there's a lot of cool perry's decor on the wall like picture frames, clocks, their merch. The staff was really efficient in getting all of our orders and also was constantly replenishing our table's water. My soup was 9 dollars so it is a medium level priced restaurant. Garden Party - One of their tequila based cocktails and it was delicious. The tequila was not overpowering at all and it reminded me of a lemon sour candy. Perry's Chili - It came in a nice sized mug and I loved that they put all the fresh ingredients: the red onions, green onions and cheese, on top so I could mix it in myself. The chili was really hearty, rich and comforting. Another appetizer we enjoyed at the table were onion strings. They were so thin, had a light batter and reminded us of shoestring fries. Would love to go back to try some of their entree dishes or for another happy hour.
google avatar

Reeven S.

Yelp
This Perry's location is absolutely stunning, especially if you sit at the outdoor tables with a beautiful view of the Bay Bridge. However, it does get very cold, and the heated lamps may not be enough. Nonetheless, I still highly recommend dining outside for the beautiful scenery. I ordered the Potato Skins for an appetizer, and I absolutely enjoyed them. The potato skins were very flavorful, especially with the crispy bacon bits on top and the melted cheese that gave every bite a delectable taste. I also ordered the grilled salmon, which I thought was just okay. The salmon was seasoned well, however, I was somewhat dismayed by the accompanying sides. With every bite, I couldn't really discern the flavors, so I had to eat them with every salmon bite to get some flavor. My co-worker's dish was also a bit cold (not because of the outdoors). I forgot which dish it was, but as soon as it was brought out, it was already cold. The staff were very accommodating with our preferred seats, and despite being outdoors, they were attentive to our needs, such as refilling our water cups. While the dishes we ordered were not perfect (perhaps we chose the wrong ones), Perry's is still stunning, and I would go back to try other dishes.

Judith B.

Yelp
We eat here often as we live within walking distance. Food & service are consistently good quality and very good value when compared to most SF restaurants.
google avatar

Abby F.

Yelp
This place was good, although I think the view was the best thing about it. I recommend sitting outside where you can get a great view of the bridge. The heat lamps could be stronger though, as they weren't giving enough heat. Overall, the view alone is worth it.
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
I enjoy a variety of dishes at Perry's. Sometimes I get the burger with avocado. Sometimes without. Sometimes with fries. Sometimes with sweet potato fries. Straying beyond those options - at least for lunch - seems both unnecessary and unwise. The rest of the menu feels pretty heavy. Pot roast. Fried chicken. Ribs. Oh my! Yes there are salads but that feels wrong at a place with - did I mention - pot roast, fried chicken and ribs. The interior seating is comfy (get a booth!) and the service is fine and un memorable. And oh, get the burger. It's solid.
google avatar

Kathy N.

Yelp
Perry's is a classic! I love coming here for a quick drink during lunch, or for happy hour with coworkers or a late dinner after all the craziness! Here are some of my favorites: calamari, corn bread, Philly cheesesteak. This time I thought I'd treat myself to a ribeye steak which included two sides. I got mashed potatoes and some Mac n cheese! The ribeye was cooked perfectly. You know I don't think I was the biggest fan of the Mac n cheese before but I really enjoyed it this time, a little bit heavy with all the cheese but still delicious. As always, can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Sayana S.

Yelp
We walked in for dinner and waited briefly at the reception for a hostess. The person who seated us wasn't particularly welcoming or rude, perhaps just tired. Our table was outside with a view of the Embarcadero, but it was very wobbly! The service was okay, and the food was good, though nothing extraordinary. I'm not sure if I would return, but if I did, it wouldn't be my first choice.

Cathie C.

Yelp
Still great after all these years. Our go to spot for a quiet dinner on a Sunday night after a busy day in San Francisco.

Robert B.

Yelp
We had French onion soup and split a Reuben sandwich which came with Cesar salad. The food was really good and the service was excellent. I recommend this place for a nice lunch.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Came here with colleagues and was impressed by the menu - something for everyone and all quite good. Sadly I was busy chatting with coworkers so didn't get a chance to take photos of the food. I got a soup (tomato bisque) as appetizer and it was average size between a cup and a bowl and traditional and good. I also went for one of the salads (Magnolia) and it was nice size and great mix of toppings. The server was super friendly and came back often to check on us and to refill our drinks. They have a decent rotating of craft beer from local Bay Area breweries and a large wine list. Restaurant is casual yet nice and this location is near the water
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
Perry's is a dependable good place for a typical American breakfast. Probably more of a 3.5 star because the service, ambiance and food are all a bit better than you'd expect for a place like this with the added bonus that it's never that packed in here. Usually it's a bit challenging to find a reasonable sit down breakfast place around the Moscone Center. The Grove looks fun but I've always found their food underwhelming. The food at Taste is generally good but the interior is cold and dated, and the prices are pretty high. If you end up at Mel's or Denny's you will hate yourself for weeks and question all of your other choices in life. Just about every option in walking distance has some caveat attached to it. Not Perry's. It's cozy, it's warm, mellow, and nice enough to just chill out in. I can get reasonably priced omelette and coffee, read up on some news, and relax. Usually free of tourists, kids, and bros.

Guederian A.

Yelp
The best appetizers and wings grilled blt with avacado was insanely good with the ceaser salad and it came out fast
google avatar

Lynda K.

Yelp
We went to Perry's after a program at the Commonwealth Club. There was a warm, inviting ambiance, and we were seated immediately. Our waiter was efficient and accommodating, and our food was delicious. We will definitely go back!
google avatar

Julius A.

Yelp
Had lunch. Sat by the window looking over the bay. Excellent service. I had the grilled artichoke and the Reuben sandwich. One of the best Reuben's I have ever eaten. Artichoke was also good
google avatar

Denis S.

Yelp
Perry's is very middle of the road. Better than a TGI- Fridays, but not by much. The food is heavy, greasy, and often fried. Nothing offensive but nothing to write home about. Service and location were both great though! So easy lunch if you're eating with a picky eater.
google avatar

Rosalyn W.

Yelp
Never had a bad meal here. Food is clean and simple. Staple items like chili, wedge salad, tenders and fries for kids are solid. They offer breakfast which way light and not greasy. I love the big booths, enclosed outdoor seating and good service. Plus the espresso drinks and full bar!

Leo B.

Yelp
Ehh. Edible yes; classic perhaps; repeatable no. Great views if you get a table facing the bridge and ferry buildings.
google avatar

Jocelyn R.

Yelp
I loved being able to sit outdoors. I can definitely see why people enjoy coming. They have great pricing and decent food. I truly enjoyed the Caesar salad with chicken and also had some clam chowder. The clam chowder was average but still good. I would have liked a bit better communication when we were waiting for our table but other than that it was a lovely time. Our server was very efficient and nice. FYI you have to climb stairs if you need to use the restroom.

Yelp
Had a blast here with my Yelp OCA crew (see review from Joyce W., OCA PHX and Jenna T., OCA Hercules, CA). We stopped in after dinner to pop some tops and make some memories. Perry's on the Embarcadero is the perfect place for a business lunch, to meet after work for drinks, enjoy dinner with friends and family, or dig into brunch on the weekends. Perry's on the Embarcadero is also conveniently located less than a mile from AT&T Park, making it a popular stop before and after Giants games. We ordered a few drinks to include the Paper Plane, double gin and tonic (that's all me) and margaritas on the rocks. All the drinks were crafted perfectly and brought out promptly. The service we received from the manager, Kenn, was outstanding. He was pleasant, courteous and even pulled up a chair at the table towards the end of the evening to sit with us and have a kiki. Stop on by and ask for Kenn, and tell him that his favorite late night Yelpers sent you!
google avatar

Joyce W.

Yelp
Perry (the name) Fact: The name Perry means one who dwells by the pear tree; traveler, pilgrim. What does that have to do with the review? Not a dang thing! ;D But when the amazing East Bay OCA, Jenna T., asks you to go to Perry's for drinks, you go to Perry's for drinks! Perry's, for nearly 50 years an institution on Union Street in San Francisco, is known for its classic American food, its warm personable service and its bustling bar. This Perry's on Embarcadero is no different. We came for drinks and I had a Paper Plane as per Kenn's recommendation! Bourbon whiskey, Aperol, Amaro Nonino, and lemon juice? Yes please! AND CHEERS! Kenn stayed later and even pulled up a seat to have a beer with us. The others in our party had other various sips and treats and they all looked great. As for my Paper Plane, it truly gave me a pleasant trip!
google avatar

Brittany J.

Yelp
We stayed at the Harbor Court Hotel for a night and wanted somewhere super close and inexpensive to go to for dinner. When we looked over the menu, it was a bit underwhelming, but decided to try it anyway because it was so close. The food and drinks turned out to be great and our waiter, Beto, was awesome! My husband had the house burger and I had the reuben with sweet potato fries. The burger was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and my Reuben was really good (it looked way better than their menu picture). We were very pleasantly surprised and grateful to have stumbled upon this little place. 10/10 we will definitely visit again next time we go to San Francisco!
google avatar

Navin K.

Yelp
Solid restaurant on the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building with great ambience and views. I met a friend for lunch and we sat outdoors under a heat lamp, because Covid rates are going back up, and neither of us wanted to fall sick or make our families sick a week before Christmas. She ordered a Cobb salad, I ordered a bowl of chili. The food arrived quickly and we dug in - I demolished my chili and she seemed to enjoy her salad. I was still feeling hungry so I ordered a Reuben sandwich (my all time favorite) with Caesar salad. The salad was a excellent. I enjoyed it as much as the superb chili that preceded it. Alas, the Reuben sandwich was probably one of the worst I've ever had - stale, dry, flavorless - and solely responsible for the 3 star rating on this review. Prices are reasonable given the location, and they have lots of indoor seating along with a long elegant bar. There are clean restrooms a level below. Parking is aplenty on the streets nearby if you go mid-day. The BART is a brisk five minute walk. Will stop again by if I'm in the area and want an inexpensive meal in a beautiful setting. But I'll stay away from the Reuben.
google avatar

Lita B.

Yelp
I finally tried lunch here after seeing it so many times on the Embarcadero. I chose indoor dining and we ordered Calamari, Cheesesteak, and Reuben Sandwich. Calamari was delish, my Cheesesteak with sweet potato fries was appetizing. I didn't taste my husband's Ruben but it did look tasty. Service was quick and friendly. Great place to have good American food.

Yelp
We stayed at the Hotel Griffon which is conjoined with Perry's and we ended up at Perry's every day! The drinks were good, the bartenders were nice and the food was amazing. The chicken wings were some of the best I've had. The sauce was tasty, the wings had a nice crisp to them, and the blue cheese wasn't overpowering. My fiancé got the club sandwich and loved it. We also loved the Mac and cheese and calamari. The portions are generous. Our whole group loved Perry's.

Yelp
My wife and I was visiting here for our anniversary. Stopped here to eat and it was definitely a bad experience. Hostess/waitress was rude and unprofessional. It started to get cool outside and when we asked for a table inside, she had an entire attitude about it When she brought the check, she literally dropped it on the table and kept walking. We found it funny how she smiled and interacted with customers of different race than us too. Because my wife and I are dieting, we told her we were sharing a plate of ribs. She still brought us two Separate orders. The food was not good. Didn't taste as though it was cooked thoroughly and the sauce was bland. It was a bad experience that put a temporary damper on our SF experience.

Yelp
Typical brunch spot with cute drinks and a nice view. Service was okay and so was the food! It wasn't bad and it wasn't wow it just was typical and nice. Really worth it if you wanna eat outside and have a view but not if you only want phenomenal food!

Yelp
Great service and views. I went on a Thursday night and had a few drinks at the bar. Then had dinner at a table with a friend. Great selection of food and drinks

Yelp
Cozy Sports bar with elevated delicious food. I'd recommend getting a reservation. This is also located at the first floor of a hotel so there are two entrances.

Yelp
I come to Perry's ever time I'm in SF and every time is great. I have to get the onion strings, pot roast, french onion soup, and apple betty a la mode. It's a must -- I recommend if you're eating alone, with friends, coworkers, or even kids. Nice homestyle meal and won't disappoint.
