Saturday night at Perry’s on Union Street is almost a San Francisco tradition going back decades. I hadn’t been there in a while and a friend wanted to have dinner there and I happily agreed. I was pleased to see they still make their onion soup so I ordered that along with the steak salad. My friend had the ribs and we shared a bottle of Cabernet that I brought with me. all the food was fine and the service was pretty good considering how busy they were.

So I've learned that Perry's is an institution. People have been coming here for years and it dates back a good ways. While we were there, it was fully packed to the hilt with people having a great time. Julia, our server was amazing, as was the food. I had the Reuben, my friends had the ribs, clam chowder, salads, and Burger. All of it amazing. Tasty drinks from the bar combined with great food and great friends and it makes for a wonderful place!

Went to lunch before a Giants game. The ribs were very good and did not disappoint. The burger was also good. I tried the Bloody Mary but it wasn’t very good. I did ask that it would not be spicy.

Our last night visiting our daughter in San Francisco and we decided to go to Perry’s Union St. We didn’t have to wait too long, the hostess was very nice and checked in with us a couple of times to say a table was almost ready. Our server promptly asked us our drink order and told us a bit about the menu and answered our questions. When our food arrived, our server had not put in the order for our daughter, apologized and said she would do it right away. We started to eat without her as our meals arrived already. The missing order arrived almost too quickly and as the chicken was cut into we all realized it was uncooked. We had to send it back. So still no food for my daughter and we were almost done our meals. The server asked if she wanted something different and she ordered a completely different meal. It finally arrived. I get things happen in a busy kitchen. The manager was there, but never came to apologize. Perhaps a discounted bill or a complimentary dessert could have been offered, but nothing. We were a bit disappointed.

Perry’s on Union Street is a go-to that never fails. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back weekday dinner, a meal while catching a sports game, or a classic steak on a Saturday night, Perry’s delivers every time. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a touch of that unique San Francisco charm. The staff is attentive without being overbearing, making you feel right at home. Their menu offers a great mix of comfort food and elevated classics, so there’s something for every mood or occasion. What really sets Perry’s apart is its versatility—it’s casual enough for an impromptu night out but polished enough to make any evening feel special. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to visit again and again.

Smash burger with fries and the Ruben. All the cocktails aren’t really sweet, more of on the stronger side but you can order drinks off the menu like dirty Shirley’s and aperol spritz. Had a great brunch here. Pet friendly.

Google
FANTASTIC decor. Lackluster eatables. Let me start by saying the ambiance in this place could not possibly be any better. Holy smokes! They've got kitschy old cigarette ads, Norman Rockwell prints, Giants memorabilia--it's an explosion of Americana and it's unapologetically outdated, verging on politically incorrect, and I loved every inch of it. Seriously, go here just to admire the 1956 Miss America contestants or check out what a terrific season the Dartmouth Indians played in 1962. I could go on, but you really have to see it to believe it. That said, the corned beef hash was so painfully dry and stringy, I would have mistaken it for jerky if I'd tasted it blindfolded. Wenchie got the eggs Benedict and the Hollandaise was pretty bland--it lacked even a tiny punch of acid. We had the sliders to start and at least those didn't disappoint. The beef was moist, the buns were spongy and the fixings were fresh and tasty. Our waitress provided us bare-basic service. A refill on my iced tea would have been nice but, alas, none was forthcoming--would have made that hash go down a little easier, anyway.

Google
A very nice and friendly restaurant. We went there with my wife to enjoy our dinner on Union Street, and weren't disappointed. Very nice atmosphere, reasonable prices, generous portions and friendly staff, what else would you want. The quality and taste of food was more like something cooked at home, not fancy or extraordinary but solid and fulfilling. We liked it.

Yelp
Every thing so delicious and we have an outdoor table for our party, lovely place to sit and enjoy a nice lunch with friends! We will celebrate the birthday party with our friends again soon!

Yelp
Perry's is a classic on Union street and my favorite place to grab a quick dinner with friends before a night out. They make the best classics and you can't really go wrong with any of them! Their French onion soup and clam chowder coming piping hot and delicious. Their clam chowder isn't gloopy or overly fishy! Perry's has the best calamari! I love how they use strips and not the O's! The batter is fresh and hot. Also a major shot out to their onion strings that are my absolute favorite. Everything from the kitchen comes out fresh and hot- the way it should be! Service is always great and don't forget to take a matchbox on your way out!

Yelp
I was craving a great burger and a beer for lunch, and Perry's was just the place! We started with the Grilled Artichoke, which was delicious. However, since it's cut into three pieces, the portions are small. It's easy to share, but I would have preferred it cut in half or left whole. For lunch, I had the Perry's Burger with cheese, avocado, and bacon. That first bite was amazing--it was cooked exactly as I ordered, medium rare. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
We were invited to go to a birthday party today here for a party of 18. It is 53 degrees in the city and we have to sit outside when we had reservations that were booked earlier, not today. I ordered the corned beef hash which was very hard to chew, and lacked flavor. Also, we arrived early and when they told us it was onlgboutside seating, we looked at the seats outside under the awning and assumed that we would be seated there in the empyry seats, but with old grandparents, they still made us wait 15 minutes before the old people in our party could be seated. I was so hungry, but could only eat half of my food because it wasn't very good. So, I ate as much as I could to have enough energy to last the meal, then find another place to eat right after.

Yelp
I used to love going to Perrys over the decades. My go to place alone or with others. Exciting to have lunch there this week. So many memories. Food was always good and generous in portions. People watching good. I used to love the 4th seat at the bar. I have photos of me there in 1988 and way before. The neighborhood is bustling again and plenty of shops so nice to stroll there. Great place to bring out of town company or friends just getting together.

Yelp
Another great visit! Dropped in during the Union Street Fair and had an awesome time. Excellent customer service, yummy cocktails, and a lively, welcoming vibe. Love this spot--always a solid choice!

Yelp
Sat in the bar on a busy festival day. A casual, affordable lunch spot, I enjoyed the Onion Strings (feeds 3), Grilled Artichokes and the Sautéed Petrale Sole Meunière.

Yelp
Perry's was busy during our visit. The burger is what caught hubs' attention. Started with the French onion soup - the broth was thicker than others I've had and it was flavorful. Hubs ordered the burger and he enjoyed it. Fries were crispy. Kiddo ordered the steak sando and I ordered the steak salad. Both were lackluster in flavor - missing seasoning or something.

Kristine C.

Yelp
The service was amazing. Kevin behind the bar was great and so was the dish he recommended, the Sole. I came by myself and was never treated awkwardly, as I was on other place on the street.

Yelp
Perry's is a classic go to! It's reliable and I know I'll enjoy it every time. Most recently I ordered Perry's to go and it didn't disappoint. You know you've been somewhere too many times when you have a go to order! the chicken BLTA with a caesar side salad. I need to shoutout the random lady sitting at the table next to me earlier this summer who ordered a burger with a caesar side salad. I had no idea that was a side option before and at no extra charge! Idk if I'm the only person excited about this but that's ok haha. I can't really comment on the service this time since I did take out but the food was made really fast and it was easy to pick up. As a side note, they had half off bottles of wine in August. Can't wait for their next promo!

Yelp
Fantastic lunch at Perry's today. Service is always amazing and bar top tables were open. Steak sandwich, burger with blue cheese, everything was delicious. Perry's had a fantastic vibe and is impossible to beat for lunch. Tons of art and history everywhere.

Yelp
Really more of a bar with food. Not super comfortable. Food is ok. The chicken was dry. The best thing were the vegetables (salad and cooked vegetables under the chicken) and the server.

Guy W.

Yelp
Perry's charges 9.1% CA State sales tax But it should be.... CA rate = 7.25% + SF City = 1.35% = TOTAL SALES TAX 8.6%. I'm a regular there and asked them twice to stop charging 9.1% tax when it should be 8.6%, but they won't stop. Perry's makes over $20M in revenues. Any suggestions?...
google avatar

Kelly R.

Yelp
A great easy go to restaurant for some comfort food! My usual order is the burger with a side caesar salad (no up charge!). I always get a solid meal here and the service is great, especially sitting at the bar! Some other favorites are their potato poppers, chicken wings, and sweet potato fries.
google avatar

Kevin Y.

Yelp
I love the Cobb salad here. They use a vinaigrette dressing instead of ranch so it's a bit lighter and healthier than most Cobb salad, while still being very filling. It was also very reasonably priced, which is hard to come by in San Francisco. So many over priced salads these days!

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
The food at Perry's is always very mid. No blue ribbons about this establishment. That being said, they have a prime location on the beautiful Union Street, which still makes it a treat to visit and sit outside. Maybe just for a drink and not food!
google avatar

Jenica C.

Yelp
I was recommended Perry's for their burger and I was not let down-- initially. The first time I had it, it was simply the best burger I ever had. Medium rare, juicy, and beefy. I decided to bring someone over to try it as well and it was not the same! Maybe someone else made it but it was not at all the same! It was completely the opposite, and cold! It was disappointing I could not share the same experience with them. I guess there is just a little bit of inconsistency. The place is real cute though, I love the historical feel.

Yelp
Our party of six ladies stopped in on a Tuesday for lunch. We were so impressed with the quality of food and the service. Our Waiter Julia was patient and gave great recommendations as far as what to eat. The artichoke appetizer we shared was yummy, the Ruben was huge, the chicken sandwich was moist and the burger cooked to perfection the spicy ribs were delicious and a huge portion. We ate inside and it was crowded yet cozy. We will come here again next time we are visiting the city.
google avatar

Yelp
The Beet Salad at Perry's exceeded expectations. The beets were well prepared, the dressing was a strong flavor but not overly heavy and the goat cheese croquettes were a revelation. But why do places never offer a vegetarian protein addition? It's such a blind spot. At least up charge me for something! I asked to sub more croquettes for the avocado and thankfully my server obliged despite hesitating. Otherwise there would only have been two croquettes which would be a dissatisfying ratio. Perry's can you make this a standard option? Including DoorDash? I will order it frequently if so!
google avatar

Yelp
Love Perry's! An SF classic. Their wine list is wonderful and they're great for an afternoon cocktail or lunch (grilled chicken BLT) or dinner!

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night and made a reservation so we were seated immediately. The vibe of this place is kinda like a dive bar as it was pretty loud and hard to have a conversation due to the loudness. I ordered the French onion soup and the Caesar salad. The French onion soup was really good but the bread inside was kind of soggy and the cheese tasted a bit off for some reason. The Caesar salad was good and I liked the amount of cheese they put on it but wish they had added more croutons. This place was kind of expensive as I ordered two sides that ended up costing around $34 total. Personally, I liked the food but I can't justify the pricing for it as it's a bit too expensive for what you're getting which is why I knocked off a star.

Yelp
thanks for this place been coming here for 4 yrs now.. 2 time for anniversary and 2 for my birthday... everything was great even on a busy saturday night.. thanks

Yelp
Had a lovely evening dinner on the patio with my friend. The burgers were some of the best we've had in the city and will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely awful. Went there with 5 friends for brunch and it was beyond disappointing. I ordered a Bloody Mary which came in a wine glass with a lemon and didn't taste like a Bloody Mary. The arugula salad was bland - as if they threw arugula from a container and added a few veggies. How on earth does this restaurant stay in business when their food (and service) are that poor? Margie, thank you for your response. The Bloody Mary I was served had none of the things you described (certainly no celery salt on the rim or elsewhere). And when I asked the waitress about it, she was rude. I have never posted a negative review in my life - so you must know for me to do so, it must've been very bad.

Guy W.

Yelp
Consistently great pub food and friendly service. Friendly patrons from the neighborhood and beyond.

Yelp
Brunch here is great. Plenty of seating for walk up service. I have the turkey BLT and it was fresh, crisp, and properly sauced. French fries were very fresh. Even though the place was busy my food arrived fast.
google avatar

Yelp
Meh. It's been here so long that they feel it's comforting to keep everything the exact same as the 80's. Yes, it's hot character and flavor. Food is meh. Service is meh. Breadsticks with salted butter are classic Perry's.
google avatar

Peter R.

Yelp
Every time we come to San Francisco, which is several times a year, we hit this place on the way out of town for a burger. Just a good old San Francisco bar and restaurant. Good place to watch a game, too.

Yelp
Walt from Walt's Adventures reporting from San Francisco. I did some adventuring in the city and found myself revisiting Perry's Restaurant. We were immediately seated and just minutes later, we found waters at our tables. My companions each ordered the Southwest and the Cobb Salads. These salads were amazing because there was nothing left but empty bowels at the end of our meal. I ordered the Cheesesteak with red and green peppers. I chose not to include onions nor mushrooms on this venture. The sandwich was cooked to perfection. The peppers were not overwhelming and the meat was flavorful. What impressed me most was the bread. It was toasted just enough that it complemented the meal and wasn't a distraction. My experience with these sandwiches were limited but I will say that any future Cheesesteaks have large plates to fill. Cornbread was my chosen side dish. 4 out of 5 stars because these were savory and did not possess the usual sweetness that one expects with this side. These were incredibly good... warm and filled with dedication of a tenured chef. For my personal tastes, I just prefer sweet over savory. It is obvious that this eatery has not only dedicated itself to treating it's guests like owners but has also focused its soul to providing some of the best food in what will forever be know as... the city

Yelp
We popped in here on a whim after walking down the street. We noticed the outside was pretty busy during the lunch hour, so we walked in and grabbed a seat. The calamari was really good and not rubbery at all. It was perfectly crispy. I ordered a chicken sandwich BLTA, and I believe it came on a brioche bun. The chicken was still warm and juicy. It was layered nicely and tasted delicious! I also found the fries to be perfect. I'm so glad we had lunch here because we really enjoyed the food.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try this place as it's a staple in the neighborhood and I finally came for dinner on a Friday evening with a friend. We had reservations that were easy to book just a day or two in advance. It was quite crowded and the service was a little spotty as we waited quite a bit to order and a couple different servers asked us for our drink order. Everyone was very friendly though. For food, I got the clam chowder and the club. The club comes with a generous portion of fries as well. Both were good! Also had a cucumber gimlet which was tasty. All in all a solid American food spot.

Yelp
Cutie little place to grab a quick bite to eat on a gorgeous day in the city. We had good service and the food and drinks were great. Definitely didn't feel overly expensive. Would go back!

Yelp
We came in here after our soul cycle class, famished and ready to eat, and Jan greeted us with a warm smile. I asked to be seated in the VIP section and she said it was only for the most important people, so follow me. ;) What a delight, she needs to get a raise effective immediately, because most people are a pain to deal with, and she left me with a big smile, great job Jan!

Yelp
My wife, a former SF resident, and I have eaten at Perry's for most of its. My first experience dates to 1980. It was excellent then and still is. The food is classic American.

Josie K.

Yelp
Really appreciated the owner giving us a gift card to try this place out again! Much better experience and it probably helped that it was a much slower night. Our waitress was attentive and bussers were super on it!! food was mid unfortunately but ambiance and service were fantastic. Hostess was so sweet with us and other guests I believe her name was jolie.
google avatar

Noah K.

Yelp
Decent food, service was good. Little overpriced IMO for what the food was. If you live in SF it's a classic spot that you have to swing by, but if you are visiting for the weekend I'd pass.

Yelp
I wish I had pictures because the food was really delicious. Loved the atmosphere and service was great.

Yelp
I used to be a long-time fan of Perry's since the 2010's. In fact, I dined here once a week for several years and was always quite pleased with the food and service. The food was never over the top good, but it was solid and met my expectations. Based on my visit yesterday (2/1/24), I was pretty disappointed in my visit. The Turkey Club sandwich used to come with Zoe's Turkey and Hobbs Bacon which made it a next level Club sandwich. Looks as though both Zoe's Turkey and Hobbs Bacon are no longer served, yet the menu said "Fresh Turkey". It turns out they have switched to Boars Head which is your slightly above average deli Turkey you can get from Safeway. Zoe's Turkey was always fresh roasted and you could tell the difference from miles apart. Moving onto the chicken wings (which I also regularly ordered), those too, were a disappointment. Pretty sure they were frozen run of the mill Sysco wings covered in canned buffalo sauce. Virtually no meat and soaked in sauce. I'm sad to say that this isn't the Perry's that I used to love. For that reason, I'm out. Sorry Perry.

Yelp
We came here on a whim after doing some window shopping, etc. Thankfully, there was no wait on a Sunday afternoon around 12:30pm. We were surprised at how large a space this location was. The host kept on leading us to the back and seated us in small but nice, covered atrium like space. The staff was very attentive, having brought us water shortly after being seated. Our server came over shortly thereafter and took our drink orders. We later then placed our food order. I was originally craving a breakfast based meal but their offerings were rather limited. In fact, they did not offer the basic breakfast (eggs, protein, potatoes, and bread). So, I decided to try their steak salad. It was filling though very pretty simple, consisting of the steak, greens, red onions, and the wine viniagrette. In retrospect, I should have ordered their burger and fries.
google avatar

Yelp
The Sqn Francisco classic still is delivering after all of these years. It is the descendant of the 1960s fern bars. The menu is basically unchanged for 40 years. Keep coming. Keep it simple. We had the burger and a caesar. Both were exactly what they needed to be. Service is busy/brisk so it's best to know what you want and think ahead. Lots of beer and wine offerings. Extra bonus points for the Pliny and Blind Pig on Tap
google avatar

Yelp
6% fee just for profit. None of it goes directly to servers. Food was good, service was good but a $25 dollar entree is $26.50
google avatar

Kevin G.

Yelp
Still great food after all these years. We had a large party with no rez - were seated immediately and service was fantastic. I enjoyed the petrale sole. Delicious.

Yelp
This place is fantastic, 10/10 would recommend. Neighborhood gem. If you disagree, kick rocks w flip flops.

Yelp
Best onion soup in SF, with amazing service, the location is fantastic, and the decor is very pretty. Always go back there for soup and a drink
google avatar

Rochelle S.

Yelp
Perry's has a great casual atmosphere! We sat in the private room in the back (the restaurant seems to have almost endless tables in their many rooms), but there is also a busy bar area and cute patio style outdoor seating. Service was just Ok, but we didn't need much from our waiter, so it was ok. Overall the food was decent and has something to offer for everyone. I really enjoyed being able to have a sit down meal for an affordable price. Prices are really good, especially for the area. We will be back.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
The french onion soup was delicious but the burger was very mediocre. Good service and ambiance.
google avatar

William G.

Yelp
My wife and I and a good friend had dinner at Perry's recently and were very impressed. My friend lives nearby and is a regular. I liked the ambiance. The decor reminded me somewhat of a neighborhood French Bistro. Service was prompt and friendly - the server seemed to know my friend and the place had a nice neighborly vibe. The food was very good. I am a soup guy and they had a large collection of both soups and salads. I had a small bowl of chili and the sole. Both were excellent. The sole was served with some really good mashed potatoes plus broccoli and carrots. My wife had a salad and my friend had a grilled chicken sandwich with bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado. We were all well satisfied. I definitely recommend.

Jill Fay R.

Yelp
My mom and I went here for dinner tonight. It had been a few years, maybe pre pandemic, but Perry's was always a solid choice. Not tonight. We ordered onion shoe strings, which was the only good part of the whole meal. We each ordered French onion soup - it wasn't broth based, but was creamier and tasted like mushroom soup! My mom had the pot roast and it tasted like fish - we both tasted it and I started gagging when I ate it. My mom actually sent it back, which she NEVER does (when we got the bill we were shocked to see it still on there, but when the waitress came back for her card, she said she'd remove it). I had the ahi tuna and there was no flavoring on it - i couldn't even finish it. Most restaurants toss it in something, but nope, not here. We are home and both feel sick to our stomach. Sad to say, but we won't be coming back here any time soon.

Yelp
Perry's on Union is a staple if you are craving traditional American food done right. The Cobb Salad was fantastic and the portion size was perfect. Great as an entree for one person or to share for two with another dish. While we ordered a medium burger, it came back a bit too rare and we had to ask the kitchen to cook it a bit more. We were a bit nervous to do so / didn't want to cause issues but the kitchen and our server were incredibly nice and understanding about it that it caused no issues. Thank you for the great service :)
