The Best Breweries, Food, and Drink to Try on the BC Ale Trail | Eater

"Nicknamed the “Beer Farm,” it operates on a farm where hops, cider apples, and garden vegetables are grown and used by the on-site Farm to Feast food truck (a converted Airstream), which operates six days a week with an ever-changing menu of pizza, tacos, breads, sandwiches, and more." - Vox Creative

We went here on a Friday night and the atmosphere and live music were amazing. Tons of cozy indoor and outdoor seating with a great vibe. The food is also really good. I tried three different drinks and my favorite was the Honey Seltzer.

Google
Persephone Brewing Company is a must-visit! The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, with a great selection of craft beers brewed on-site. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, offering excellent recommendations. I loved the variety of flavors and the cozy outdoor seating area. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, enjoy a delicious pint, and take in the beautiful surroundings. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in Gibsons!

Google
Great brews. They also have nice options for non-alcoholic drinks too…but go for the beer if you’re at this brewery!

Angela Jeffery

Google
Open, clean space with lots of outside seating as well. I tried the beer & cider mixes in a flight; they were interesting. Personally, I'll stick to the beer & cider on their own next time. There is also a bookstore on the second floor.

Google
My first time here. Heard lots of good things about this place, so came to see myself. Excellent atmosphere and nice beer, but terrible food. The fried fish was dried and burned ( dark brown), and the burger buns were cold. With C$100 for a simple lunch for four, we can find better places around here.

Katy Moran

Google
This was our favorite brewery location and beer of the entire weekend. All the beers we tasted here or elsewhere in town were great and this location is absolutely beautiful. Loved the grounds and also loved the comics in the tables!

Kamelia D

Google
Had a smash burger. It was an interesting area where you order and they make the food in a food truck. Lots of seating inside and outside. It’s more of a distillery so the food was average.

Google
Great place for a visit amd supper with friends. Julieka was very friendly and extremely helpful. Can't wait to come back. I would highly recommend the cherry oak cider!

Yelp
Persephone was so much more than we expected! We're so used to the little breweries in Vancouver that are just fun for some tasting flights but Persephone was a whole experience. You can definitely spend many hours on their large farm and not get bored. There's a fun little self-guided tour that takes you throughout the farm to learn how the beer is made and all the extra little things they have, like a chicken coop! There's a ton of different areas to sit in and an orchard and greenhouse and berry farm, and even a bookstore. There is just so much to take in. They also have a food truck on site and other little snacks available. Even some local ice cream :) And of course, there's a large beer selection, but also a lot of cider options. We really enjoyed the few that we tried in our tasting flight and got a lot of beer to take home. Turns out they also have a flat discount if you buy enough beer, which the staff were kind enough to inform us about. We definitely had a great time!

Yelp
The poutine was amazing, the gravy tasted absolutely Devine, Cheese Curds needed to be a lil meltier but overall delicious, and the Fries are CRISP! The service was friendly, kind, and the people working there will give you a lot of joy, I'll tell you that! Don't get me started though on the ambiance; it was a nice vibe, with awesome music and some rockin' displays. If you are ever in the area and want a nice poutine, GO HERE!

Mike T.

Yelp
Poor service and poor quality of food. my friend's pita bread was cold and when asked, they said it was "pita chips" and they had no intent of heating it up. I understand they are busy but they should have had more staff to cook. We had to ask for our food to go because it took a very long time for them to make our food. we only ordered some poutine and cheese hot dogs. it took 45 mins to make. I see a lot of good reviews here maybe they had a bad day today. the beer came quick though, it was pretty good.

Yelp
Hey I am in Gibson and why not drop by at Persephone. I ended up coming back twice within a week while I was staying in Gibson. I dropped by and picked a few cans of beer. I got the Stout, Berline Weisse and Brewer Choice Lager for B to try. The Berline Weisse was a miss for sure. He didn't really like that one. Out of the three that I got he really liked teh Brewer Choice Lager. It had a light refreshing flavor. The stout was not bad but also not like special. The prices of the 4 tall cans ranges from $12 to $20. We also walked around the area as well. They have a chicken coup and a nice area to sit and relax. There are free parking on site but the parking lot was very small and it was not paved. I am sure I will be back again another time.

Yelp
What a beautiful setting. I feel like we were at someone's home farm. Totally relaxing and chill vibe. They have a great selection of beers and ciders. The food menu is simple and has something for every diet.
google avatar

Yelp
I loved everything about Persephone! The large selection of beers, the beer itself, friendly service, great soundtrack, the food! I had pulled pork sliders which were delicious and large. My favourite beer was Oktoberfest. Also some very nice dark beers right now. They currently have a mandatory mask policy so you need to wear a mask in line. Lots of seating both indoors and under various tents/structure throughout the property. Such a cool spot. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
One of my fave brews - the black lager! I finally made it over to Persephone on my bday weekend away. It was rainy but our first stop at this quaint brewery was a great way to start our day! The staff was lovely and their merch is very cute, so cute I bought a tuque! My bf and I both ordered flights so we could try different beers. I loved their cider, crisp and easy to drink. They weren't pouring the black lager so we bought some to take home. The overall atmosphere of Persephone feels like a friends house with comfy couches, wooden tables and record player. I can only imagine how fun this place is in the summer with the barn style open doors and outdoor seating with pizza oven! I will 100% be back!

Yelp
What an awesome experience to pull up to Persephone, see the hops growing and everything that have on that land. Shared a flight of beer with my boyfriend and enjoyed each and every one (Hoppy's Private Reserve, Dry Stout (Nitro), Honey Farmhouse Ale, and Keller Pilsner). The food truck was closed as we may have arrived a bit too early so couldn't really scope that out. Beautiful interior, with the old barber chair, funky lights and beautiful wood furniture and decor.
google avatar

Kaitlin T.

Yelp
I randomly popped in for a quick pint while waiting for my ferry home. I ordered the Dry-Hopped Cider and found that it was a light and bubbly beverage. Persephone is a really cool location and I'm sure the foliage is beautiful when everything is in bloom in the summer months. It is worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Becky M.

Yelp
I loved this brewery. It's on a farm with heritage type buildings and picnic tables outside to lounge on. I Iked each of the four beer I had in the flight. I especially liked the nitro stout, so I bought some to take home. I also really enjoyed the Golden Goddess Ale; it was a bit hoppy. You can buy food from a food truck onsite, but we chose to have a tasting without food this time. You can also sit inside the tasting room, which has comfortable couches, tables and bar type seating. You can also buy Persephone memorabilia to take with you. There sell socks, t-shirts, hats and glasses as well as growlers. I definitely recommend stopping in here if you appreciate beer in a rustic style setting.

Yelp
I was in Gibsons for a long weekend and my friends were told to come here for the great beer. We were pleasantly surprised to see how cute this place was - lots of flowers, a vegetable garden and many benches and tables. It was nearing lunchtime and we were so glad to see that there's a food truck - Farm to Feast. I got the pizza ($22) and it was probably one of the best pizzas I've ever had. The pizza seems to change every so often. The one I had had purple flowers on top, delicious cheese, a fresh sauce, and dill. I didn't get to try the beer, but my friends bought a whole bunch for the weekend. Near the end of our trip, we came back for more beer and there was a garlic festival happening at the time. What a neat place. I definitely encourage you to stop by, especially if you like beer.

Yelp
What an absolute gem! I heard this brewery was a good one to visit, but after being there, it should be on top of everyone's list. They have their crops all set up and a farm in the back with greenhouses and even chickens. There was a big selection of beers to try and the Farm to Feast food truck is out of this world good. It takes a little time for the food to get out but the cute picnic area with great drinks makes the time go by quickly.
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
This place is truly unique in the brewery world. They grow their own hops and brew on site, delivering the freshest of beer. During my last visit, they had a nitro beer ("Wee Heavy"), kombucha, a collaboration with Townsite brewing (Powell River), and many of their own, both standard and more "craft" varieties. Friendly and relaxed environment. They serve pizza on site, and have a variety of snacks from local companies. They also host parties and do tons of cool events. Not the easiest place to get to. From the Langdale/Gibson's ferry, you need to trek up the hill somehow. There's a bus that goes up that way infrequently, but you're better off driving, bicycling, or walking. Or getting a ride from a friendly local ;)

Sylvan B.

Yelp
IPA : the beer is pretty good , but to sweet . The cans look made to attract young drinkers , And good try with the box , but it is not practical .. I will buy again if my regular beer is not in store .
google avatar

Nina S.

Yelp
Super cool atmosphere and wonderful setting but I don't know if I was just not in beer mood or made wrong choices on my sampler but can't say it was my favourite beer tasting. I would definitely give it another go in the area to try the other offerings. Value 4/5 Atmosphere 4/5 Service 3/5 Quality 3/5 14/20

Yelp
Possibly the coolest brewery I've been to! Persephone has a huge lot of land where you can see hops growing as far as your eye can see, greenhouses, gardens and a chicken coop, making the little walk around the brewery really neat. You can also see their brewing equipment amongst all of the farm as well. Only minutes from the ferry terminal, we saw that many others had the same idea - grab a beer or flight and play one of the board games they have around while you wait for your ferry. They have a seating space outside where you can have flights or a covered drink. There are other non-alcoholic beverages for drivers too!
google avatar

Maike E.

Yelp
The brewery is nice, they offer flights of beer so you can sample their range. The growlers are quite reasonable and the place is a pretty cool spot to hang out. Board games, an outdoor area that's dog friendly, a variety of seating and ducks on the pond to keep the kiddies amused. They have a food truck attached with an outdoor stove for fresh pizza. People go mad over this, but i find it very expensive for what it was... Sure it's good, great flavours etc. But at $40 for what was essentially a one person pizza and a small cup of carrot salad, i didn't think it was justified. We pay less in some Yaletown, Vancouver restaurants for two and that's a hearty meal! We'll be back, but only to fill the growler!
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Located on a beautiful farm- the tasting room and cozy and rustic. Beers are excellent and it's great the also have a nice cider. When we last went they were serving a collaboration snakebite of their saison and brickers cider. Delicious!
google avatar

Cathy L.

Yelp
Cool place to hang out before heading to the ferry. They were selling pizza which I didn't grab cause I had just ate but it smelled delicious.
google avatar

C L.

Yelp
Came here after hiking Soames Hill. Great place with friendly staff, good beer and food and a nice vibe with numerous outdoor seating options.
google avatar

Lara O.

Yelp
This is an incredible spot. The staff were so genuine and friendly and definitely laid back! Heaps of parking, views of rows upon rows of hops. Multiple outdoor patios, board games galore. I can see why families like it, a little playground that the kids seemed to love and plenty of space for parents to be near by but enjoying a drink with friends. I really loved the golden ale. I didn't order any food, but the people next to me were served amazing salads on the side of a chicken dish with pansies and radishes that were plated beautifully, and smelled amazing! They finished up with creme brulee that looked amazing! couple next to us shared a pizza and it looked really fresh and delicious. If I was a local this spot would be a weekend favorite!
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Great beer and wonderful setting. Located on a working farm where you can enjoy a taste inside the barn or outside on the grounds. A nice stop after arriving or on your way back to the Langdale ferry terminal. Love the standby Goddess Golden, but really can't go wrong with anything.

Yelp
As I still struggle pronouncing Persephone, they should just rename it The Beer Farm. I can't think of any other brewery I've ever been to that grows their own hops on premise. What was once I hobby farm is now a hoppy farm. Strongly supported by sunshine coast locals, they have grown operations quickly since my first visit. For craft beer junkies, this is a super easy day trip from Vancouver. Hop on the ferry to Langdale (sidenote: sunshine coast is not an island. Otherwise it would be called sunshine island. Check the maps) go up the hill, turn left and you'll see the farm once you hit the highway. Opt for a paddle, sit outside (or inside if there is live music) and enjoy farm crafted beers. Their Dry Stout is one of the stand outs, as well as Rum Runner Red Ale and Double IPA. On Fridays and Saturdays they have wood fired pizza made out of their outdoor homemade oven though I haven't tried that yet. Why farm potatoes when you can get drunk off hops?

Yelp
So glad I stopped at Persephone while on vacation in Gibsons! It is a dreamy place - great beer, amazing farm to explore, and a killer food truck! I kept thinking how we could get something like this in my home town! The atmosphere is super relaxed. Wish I could be a regular!!

L R.

Yelp
Lovely outdoor seating area. The beers are all on the hoppy side (which you'd expect from a west coast brewery) but if that's not your style they also offer cocktails and wine!

Yelp
Located in the town of Gibsons, British Columbia, Persephone Brewing Company is quite the charmer. Central in town and a short car ride from the Langdale Ferry Terminal, Persephone labels itself as being all about "beer farm fresh" and it certainly lives up to that moniker. You can actually see and smell the farm's growing hops, live chickens, and general barnyard setup as you enter the facilities. They have a nice, slightly more American craft beer influenced, lineup of beers available. I was already a big fan of the full-bodied black lager with its crisp finish and the Oktoberfest lager's seasonal aroma. The Multigrain Saison (above) is light but tart and full of flavour. The Goddess Golden Ale is basically an English style ESB with a crisp, refreshingly light, and malty composition. The Rum Runner Red Ale has a ton of malty pine notes as well as a dark and toasty taste. The American Pale Ale is a nicely mild brew with citrus and hoppy flavours. You know what else is cool at Persephone? Outdoor drinking and "picnic areas" where patrons pour drinks from their newly filled growlers and lounge about. Persephone also has its own "food truck" on site open during evenings. It's a pretty open, casual setup all around as you casually wander the beer grounds. Persephone is a must visit for any beer lover and not only for the reliably well-made brews, but also the great attraction that is the beer farm itself. It's a very family friendly, community feeling environment with a laid-back atmosphere and good beer.

Yelp
Sweet little gem of a brewery! Beautiful place to chill with friends or your dog, beers great and the staff are unique. Love this place!
google avatar

Timmy T.

Yelp
This is a quirky, unique place A beer farm..never been to one, and was pleasantly surprised If you're in Gibsons, you have to pay them a visit Beer is cold, and environment is warm
google avatar

Kara C.

Yelp
absolutely beautidul here! We got 3 flights each (to try each beer, naturally) and sat outside on the patio in the sun. The staff was incredibly friendly and service amazing. I am so excited to come back!
google avatar

Andrea C.

Yelp
This beer farm is a sight to behold and to experience. The vines of hops on the way in are a wonder in itself and the odours and chickens round out the true farm experience. Of the beers serving, only the American Pale Ale was a hit for me. The dry stout was flat and a bit of a disappointment. There are great seating areas all over and its own food truck serves their own farm grown food. If you're staying on the Sunshine Coast, bring an insulated growler to keep your beer cool while you are on your outdoors adventure or camping. If you're not, it is still totally worth the day trip from Vancouver!
google avatar

Todd H.

Yelp
Can't beat the atmosphere of this beautiful hops farm on the Sunshine coast. The beer and cider is top quality too!
google avatar

Marilyn N.

Yelp
Best brewery on the sunshine coast! Great atmosphere, great staff and so close to the ferry!
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
This is a great space! Brewery done right! So much room and the ability to fill, grab glasses and drink it on property (basically a picnic) is such a smart idea. First and last stop on the Sunshine Coast before the ferries!
google avatar

Jorge P.

Yelp
Best beer of the three. Full bodied, always interesting flavours and new beers. We have a saying that goes "Creerse la última coca-cola en el desierto," and the answer is always Persephone!
google avatar

Louise G.

Yelp
Love this pub. So great to have a place to take the kids and they can run around outside.. we take all our visitors to the coast here!

L T.

Yelp
I've been meaning to write this review for a year, but this place was so good to us on our wedding day I knew I absolutely had to commend them sooner or later. Weddings can be stressful but manager Roo and the whole Persephone staff were so helpful and chill on the big day. Roo helped us stash flowers and cake behind the scenes, accommodated last-min requests and just generally made the rental feel like a family affair. The bar staff was dancing with the crowd by the end of the night. An epic party, an epic brewery, exactly what we wanted for our wedding. Thank you Persephone!

Leilani T.

Yelp
So glad we found this brewery while staying on the sunshine coast. I'm used to the breweries in Vancouver and seeing this unique brewery was a nice change. Its on a farm and they grow their own hops. When we visited they had a setup where you can help pick the hops, it was very interesting. The beers were good too, and they let me try a bunch because I couldn't decide. The place was also kid friendly and we saw lots of other babies drop by too. They have games, books and fruits for kids which I thought were cute.
google avatar

Tracee B.

Yelp
Being from Portland, I've been to a few breweries. This one has great atmosphere and good quality line up of beer. It has a jazz band on Saturdays which is a very nice touch.
google avatar

Catherine J.

Yelp
I'm very used to the Vancouver brewery scene these days and Persephone is a breath of fresh air. The whole shebang is on a farm outside of Gibsons with a rustic tasting room and patio in the shadow of hop vines growing in a cutting between a forest. A much more casual vibe completely lacking pretention. The American Pale Ale (very similar to an ESB) and the Goddess Golden Ale are clearly outstanding beers!

Lisa P.

Yelp
Great Beer - love the Goddess Golden! Beautiful setting on the working farm! Great first stop when you get off the ferry to start a weekend on the Sunshine Coast. Have to try the pizza - amazing!! Love this place!

Andrew J.

Yelp
I've tried the Pilsner and the India Summer Ale. Definitely a great tasting beer, can't wait to try the other flavours.

Pang T.

Yelp
Beer heaven. Tasting room in in a barn on a farm surrounded by hop fields and a park, children's playground and a duck pond. The beer and staff are both exceptional.

Lauren C.

Yelp
Love the beer, cider and the farm, playing foosball, hang out with the chickens and have a paddle or 2. Plus, the Sunshine Coast is beautiful.

Charles T.

Yelp
Great beer, awesome folks, and a really nice establishment. What more could you ask for. Saturday afternoon beer, wood oven fired pizzas and live music all add to the fun. Thanks for being a Sunshine Coast first.
