The 21 Best Restaurants in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca | Eater

"Azar Aghai and her family opened Persia to share the cuisine of their country, Iran. The atmosphere and decor of their restaurant takes you on a journey to the Middle East, with falafel, hummus, piroshki (an appetizer of ground beef encased in dough) and several vegetarian options like kuku, eggs whipped into balls with ingredients like potatoes and herbs. Open from Monday to Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. [$$-$$$]" - Tirza Bonifazi

Over 30 years ago a friend of mine made what I knew only as Persian pomegranate chicken. I’ve been wanting to have it again ever since. To my surprise, this restaurant has it on the menu! The 30+ year wait was over (it’s called khoresh fesenjan)! But would it be as good as I remembered? All I’ll say is that I was transported in time, I was blown away: it was just as I remembered. It was so, so delicious! Also, the basmati rice is perfection! I’m coming back for more as long as I’m in the area. This place should be on your list!

Pretty average. Service was friendly but inattentive. After placing our order we waited around 10 minutes, before having to remind our waitress about our drinks. There were only 3 or 4 other tables of people in the restaurant. Aubergine starter dip barely had any aubergine flavour in it. Just tasted of garlic and yoghurt. It was tasty but not what we ordered or were expecting. Hummus was strongly flavoured with cumin, more than tahini. Falafel salad had 4 tiny balls of fairly tasteless falafel in it. Not enough for what they are charging! Everything looked pretty, but lacked substance. Restaurant is decorated really nicely.

Some of you might think, why would I try Persia while in Escondido? You're wrong. This restaurant captures everything that is this place... The rich wild and organic flavors. The this is so good why isn't it like that everywhere. Loved it so much been here twice. The ethnic Persian house music they play fits so neatly with the inviting homey atmosphere they have. If you don't know what I'm talking about it's because you haven't been there yet.

i ate dinner here last week while visiting puerto escondido. the service and atmosphere were fine. while the food was good, the meal i ate here made my stomach upset that night and the entire next day. i know it was from the food at this place, because this restaurant’s food was the only thing i ate that day. i have a feeling it was from under cooked chicken. just beware.

Great cozy spot in La Punta, Zicatela! We were missing some of the persian cuisine while travelling through Mexico. The staff was really nice, and we could communicate in every language here, spanish, farsi, german, english. Lovely interior with a traditional persian setup. The food was great too. We had the Ghormeh Sabzi, really recommend that if you wish to try out some of the most “persian” food you can get. If we come bach to Puerto Escondido, we would love to revisit.

Ate there last night. Loved the food. Chicken so tender it fell off the bones. Great flavor. Drinks were on point. love that skewers are cooked on an open fire where guests can see great touch. The gentleman cooking the skewers seemed to cook them with care. The ambiance was lovely and chill tribal/house/trance music was playing. We received our food quite quickly but when the restaurant started filling up it was a little slow to get our bill. Didn't bother us though. Its a nice place to hang out and the staff was friendly and greatful. Would return and recommend.

The restaurant was - compared to a lot of other places at La Punta - not very crowded. Persia is the living example that that doesn’t say anything. We had the wrap kebab and wrap falafel and were blown away. Tasted really good and I was instantly curious to try other things on the menu. The service was good, staff was super friendly. We were initially looking at other restaurants, but were in the end very happy with ending up in this cozy place. Music is nice as well!

Let me begin by saying the staff is exceptionally friendly. The star rating is based on the food. We tried a few things on their menu and it didn't feel authentic. Each dish got a tiny piece of meat with it or one small skewer. I absolutely love Persian food I find it to be by far one of the tastiest and rich cuisines. However, the meat was a bit dry and lacking in some of that extra flavour, and the portions are very small for what it was. If there was at least an option to add more meat perhaps this would give the customer the opportunity to know the portions may be small and can opt for more meat.
