Humbled authenticity of Mexican beachside food in the heart of Kenmore
We had been waiting for Pescador, under the oversight of Blue Ribbon Restaurants (thank you!), to open its doors. Situated in Kenmore Square at the old Island Creek Oyster Bar hotspot (no slouch itself) and attached to The Commonwealth, it could not be more appropriately situated to continue the locale as a seafood-inclined eatery.
A demurely-lit, visually appealing foyer opens to communal seating, an expansive bar, and a variety of seating arrangements, all well-spaced to ensure both lively discussions or intimate settings.
As recommended by our server, with Palomas in hand, we opted for the Peruvian Ceviche and Octopus with Chorizo. Both were simply prepared, which no doubt led to their individually sublime tastes. Kudos to his excellent palette. The ceviche was Incredibly fresh, light and savory, and paired wonderfully with the sautéed-near-crispy sliced octopus, which itself was complemented exquisitely with smoky chorizo (hint- ask for extra ciabatta to mop up the garlic & olive oil goodness). Well done.
Mains included the New Bedford sea scallops, resting on a bed of Esquites corn, Mexican crema and salsa roja, which held it own, and the whole roast branzino - zarandeado style - which, eaten with incredibly moist and soft tortillas, was the secret star…this dish in particular, conjured memories of sitting in a tiny restaurant off the beaten path, in Puerto Morelos, wolfing down fresh-off-the-boat whole roasted fish, soft tacos style, with plenty of cold cervezas.
There is so much to sample- and the small dishes make it enticing to explore. Throughout the evening, from the music piping overhead, to the multitude of evening-goers, it was a memorable experience with impressionable and delectable tastes, we will be back.
