Yelp
I've tried (and loved) both Peter Chang locations; the West End / Short Pump and the Downtown / VCU locations. The food is the same delicious, high-quality, as-close-to-authentic-as-you-can-find-in-Virginia Chinese fare in both. But the ambience is very different.
The VCU location feels much more like an American idea of what a Chinese restaurant feels like, with the color red dominating, and the Chinese hanging lanterns, lots of booths, etc...
The Short Pump location feels much more like Chinese restaurants feel in Asia: More open, more tables, etc... Think "more 'Diner', less 'Restaurant'."
I like them both, equally, but there is a difference in atmosphere and essence.
Another difference is that the VCU location was missing a couple of the menu favorites I'm used to. Our waiter (Hi, Brian!) explained that, due to the recent viral unpleasantness, the VCU location had pivoted toward a large take-out & delivery business and, as a result, some menu items that were more labor-intensive and less "travel friendly" had been removed. He mentioned that this was -- hopefully -- a temporary situation and eventually those items would return to the menu.
His explanation had the ring of truth. As we entered the restaurant I noticed that what used to be the bar had been converted to a staging area for takeout and delivery orders. It was stacked with a dozen or so orders waiting to be picked up.
I'm happy to see Peter Chang's doing a brisk business, but I hope they can avoid becoming just another Chinese takeout.
