On the Grid : Peter Chang

"James Beard award-winning chef Peter Chang  is mysterious, but his M.O. is well known. He pulls into existing Chinese restaurants, transforms and trains the kitchen to his Sichuan-style, and then he’s gone, off to lend his talented touch to another spot. And this is exactly what he did at his incredibly popular Short Pump location. So popular in fact that he was inspired to open yet another location closer to downtown in booming Scott’s Addition at the Hofheimer Building. It’s quickly becoming a favorite in his growing empire, especially since it’s one of few that boasts a full bar." - The Frontier Project

The servers were okay, they were a bit rude when I dropped my lipstick (not sure why they laughed at me for that) but the food was pretty good. Some plates lacked flavor. It’s a hit or a miss, some days it’s good some days it’s bland. I wouldn’t come back here on a regular basis but only when I’m craving specific dishes I come here. Parking is difficult to find.

I've had dinner at Peter Chang's many times and tried quite a few of the menu items. The Bubble Pancake is always a good starter and the kids love it. Speaking of kids, some of the main dishes pack a spicy tongue numbing punch and children may not be ready for that. For appetizers I always get the Dry-Fried Eggplant and the Bamboo Fish. Those are both similarly seasoned with cilantro and some pretty potent hot pepper🌶️ flakes that will ruin your taste buds for the rest of the dinner if you are not careful. It's a love/ hate thing for me with the heat. Peter Chang's hot seasoning is a different kind of hot than a hot sauce. I literally couldn't taste anything after eating the Bamboo Fish (pictured) dish which I recently ordered as a meal size portion. Stick with the appetizer size portion on the Bamboo Fish. The Golden Mountain of Chicken or Mongolian Beef is very satisfying and "safe" for kids. My wife likes the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (pictured). That's probably one of several vegetarian options. I've tasted it and it's good, but personally I wouldn't make it my main meal. All the soups I've tried are really good. The Crispy Pork Belly is delicious. Lots of menu items to explore, most with a spicy flare. Some of the original charm of Peter Chang's has worn off for me, but it's still a unique Asian style restaurant that stands out in the crowd. Service was good. The restaurant can get pretty crowded and tables are maybe a bit too close together for some who prefer more privacy.

First off, we had Madison as our server and she was fantastic! She really cared that we had a good experience and ordered the right items. After reading a slew of recent reviews that were negative on this place I almost didn’t go but I’m definitely glad I did. As Madison pointed out, if you’re coming here for standard Chinese food, you’re probably going to be disappointed because you’re paying twice as much for something you could get at any take out Chinese restaurant. This place specializes in Szechuan cuisine so make sure to order what they do best! We had the dry friend eggplant which was super tasty and I would highly recommend it. Crispy and seasoned to perfection with a slight kick. My only complaint was that the ratio of “toppings” like the green onion and Szechuan peppers was about equivalent to the eggplant. I would prefer to see more of the fried eggplant in there. The pork Bao buns are also amazing! The meat inside is seasoned super well already but the spicy garlic sauce on the side really knocks it out of the park, especially if you like a good kick of heat! Our entree was the three pepper beef which we loved as well! Definitely has a good amount of heat to it but the flavors are delicious! Again my only complaint here is that there was way more veggies and onions than beef which was a little disappointing because I was fishing for meat in the dish. Basically this place didn’t get 5 stars because I thought some of the ratios were off and also because it took a while once we were sat to get a waitress to come over but once we were going everything was very smooth. But as far as the taste, it was awesome! Excited to go back and try more of this menu!

Google
Where can I start... service was amazing. It's like everyone there was family. Food, indescribable. And there was so much, with just the right amount of spice. My absolute favorite place for Asian Fusion.

Google
I used to looooove this place but they’ve gotten stingy with portion sizes (at least with delivery). I usually crave their mapo tofu but you should get more than this for $18. It was also weirdly more gelatinous than usual and just tasted like a salty gravy. I hope they go back to the way they used to do things.

If Peter Chang has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Peter Chang has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Peter Chang has only one fan then that is me. If Peter Chang has no fans, then that means I am no longer on Earth. If the world is against Peter Chang, then I am against the world.

Peter Chang in Scott’s Addition!!! Tonight, my husband and I had our engagement party tasting at Peter Chang In Scott’s addition. I first want to commend the ambience- the restaurant is open layout, clean, and had nice music. Secondly, as soon as I walked into the door, I was greeted by the staff who was expecting me and my husband for the tasting. The staff were excellent, they were constantly there to bring out plates, clean, and bag all of our leftovers. The manager even discussed with us how we could modify each dish and their spice levels to fit the needs of our guests. And lastly, the food was delicious definitely not as Americanized, as I was expecting like all of the other Chinese food restaurants in the Richmond area. Many of these dishes had authentic flavors like Szechuan and umami. All cooked to perfection. Presentation of all the food was excellent! Thanks again!!

Google
Pork bao was quite good. Fried rice was ok, lo mein could have had more flavor. Portions were a normal size. As far as Chinese restaurants go, it was a pretty average experience. It met but did not exceed my expectations.

Yelp
The place came recommended by a local who knows how much new yorkers love Chinese / Asian food. It was very nice inside. The food was very delicious. We started with pork belly which had a very interesting texture, not your traditional taste of texture. Loved it but it was a lot for two people. We shared the chicken dish, very tasty and lots of black pepper. Another great choice. I would give food 8/10

Yelp
Really was a letdown when you're one of the few places that offers beef chow fun, and there's all but five small pieces of beef for $18. Enormous waste of money. Also, really bland. Cheng Du was far better.

Yelp
The food was delicious. All of our entrees were hot, fresh, and delicious. We returned again the same week because it was so good. The wonton soup is very flavorful. Staff was also very friendly and helpful. The aesthetic is perfect and the facility appears very clean. The only things we would have changed were that the spring rolls were kind of cold, and we found the soup dumplings lacking. The soup dumplings stuck to the leaves and tore apart while trying to eat them. We highly recommend and will return in the future.

Yelp
First time at this location. They weren't busy so We were seated within a minute of entering the restaurant. The table was clean. The music was not too loud and created just the right vibe. The food came out in excellent time and it was delicious. I even purchase some of their garlic chili sauce. A great dining experience.

Yelp
My friend took me here, and I found the food and service to be outstanding. We had two small platters to start: the bamboo fish and dry fried eggplant. With the first bite, I was hooked -- and I normally hate eggplant! Nice amount of heat. Very flavorful. For my entree, I got the beef with onion and chili pepper. Once again, it was deliciously spicy. Meanwhile, our waitress was very attentive and pleasant. All in all, I can't recommend Peter Chang highly enough. Especially if you like spicy foods!

Yelp
I Love the lo mein and the Hunan chicken and pepper chicken. Very flavorful dishes. It's high end and more expensive than regular Chinese but good. I like to order this wish they had eggrolls like other places but anywho good eats

Yelp
I came here to hang out with friends I hadn't seen in years, anddd it was a great idea. I visited a different location a week before and it was great, so seeing the difference was a good way to gauge whether there was a consistent flavor across the franchise. The staff was warm and friendly, even though we arrived an hour before closing. It started raining soon after our arrival and a little drama happened outside, but they made sure everyone was safe inside the restaurant. We ordered Hunan shrimp (a little heavy on the soy sauce), fried dumplings, golden mountain chicken and, Golden mountain beef. The Shrimp was absolutely delicious, and the fried rice accompanying it was tasty too. My friends raved about their dishes and even ordered an extra to take-home for later. Only issue was the server forgot to bring the appetizer out first, the requested sauces, my friend's pot of tea, and the other friend's to go dish (he got it in before the kitchen closed, better late than never). Glad to know there is some good Chinese food in the area after a few long time places closed. I'll be back.

Katja T.

Yelp
The food was not very good. We ordered the vegetable friend rice, which was basically just fried rice with a few morsels of vegetable, and the chicken lo mein. It was basic and not very tasty. The friend rice was very salty. The service was good (fast and polite) and the decor was pretty. Will not return and would not recommend. If the chef can't get an easy dish like fried rice right I would not trust them with a more elaborate meal.

Yelp
Great restaurant if you're in the mood for Szechuan style Chinese food. We had the Szechuan style fish in stone pot and the steam soup buns aka XLB. Both were great.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is amazing!!! Best wonton soup in the region. Fried rice dishes are not overly greasy. Highly recommended!!

Yelp
I loved everything I ordered via DoorDash. It's rare for me to enjoy every items I've ordered so here I am gushing. The fried rice and bang bang shrimp were excellent. Both were seasoned just right. I was particularly thrilled by how nicely spicy the fried rice tasted. It had abundant shrimp buried on the bottom. The picture doesn't really show nor does it do much justice. The fried eggplants were also delicious. It was fried similarly to tempura so it just melted in mouth. The bang bang shrimp were covered in just the right amount of batter and sauce. It wasn't too sickly sweet or sour. I wouldn't mind ordering again.

Yelp
This is the best Chinese I have had in a really long time. A must stop by if you are around Richmond. We would love the chef consider open a location in New Jersey

Yelp
My friend and I stopped by Peter Chang for a small dinner during our trip to Richmond. It was snowing that night and I really appreciated them being open! We shared the veggie spring rolls and Basil Eggplant in Clay Pot. Since we weren't the hungriest, it was the perfect portion for us, but I would recommend getting a second dish if you're looking for more. The sauce that the eggplant was in was so flavorful! I loved it. Service was friendly and great.

Alli A.

Yelp
The waitstaff was great and the food was really flavorful and came out really quickly would recommend!

Yelp
Best restaurant in Richmond bar none! If you haven't gone you need to. If you like your Asian food spicy they will make.you really happy. Just go!

Yelp
Good...given the options around. I am a huge fan of Chinese cuisine, and especially Szechuan Chinese food. I ordered hot and sour soup, which was peppery but good, and their Kung Pao Tofu which was nothing special, but fine; it could have used more sauce. I lastly ordered their scallion (bubble) pancake, and although it looked great, it didn't tasted good; the "pancake" was bland and sauce that it came with (turmeric something) was off. This dish was more for looks than taste; it reminded me of Indian Puri and chutney, which I wasn't expecting. As for service, that too was also okay. We came an hour before they closed and they were rushed, and I felt it. Their prices were also pretty high. Overall, for all things considered - vibe, service, quantity and quality - this restaurant is average. Perhaps compared to their competitors in the area, they are a better option, but compared to good Szechuan Chinese food, they are very average.

Yelp
My first time trying this restaurant! Everything was delicious! Even the waitress was friendly and nice! I would definitely recommend. I had no issues. :)

Deirdre M.

Yelp
This was highly disappointing as it had been recommended and other reviews were so positive. Our party ordered pan-fried salmon, scallops w/brussels sprouts, tofu vegetable soup, and dry-fried green beans. All dishes were so heavily over-salted that any other seasoning was lost. Our server was efficient and friendly, and the ambiance was pleasant with nice touches. Perhaps an off night?

Yelp
3 stars for the veg spring rolls they were crisp & very good dipped in the duck sauce & the delivery on the food was extremely fast! I did attend during lunch so it was a small crowd present on my arrival! I was seated in the area alone & then i just didn't appreciate the service as much! The low mein came out faster than my drink as if it's a buffet in the back! Taste wise .. ehhhh , the noodles were overcooked i had to had extra duck sauce for a better delivery ! But not that surprised again i barely waited for the food to be done! Okay experience Price goes with portion (about 2 sitting) Had a lemonade which wasn't good at all (like they don't clean the filter) very sugary I took a sip & didn't finish Nice interior Very clean

Yelp
I pre-ordered and picked up from 2816 W Broad. The food was ready and packaged well. However, the food was not good (awful ). It was unappealing to the eye and under seasoned but over salted. the Crispy Chicken was not crispy overcooked and tasted like leftover chicken. The Hunan fish was too salty to eat. The Cilantro fish roll was the only thing that tasted half way decent. Everything looked and tasted the same. I was extremely disappointed. Peter Chang was highly recommended by a friend whose judgment I trust. I spent over $100. I will not be patronizing them ever again!

Kenya F.

Yelp
I've never been to a Peter Chang that I didn't love until today. This location only had canned drinks which to me was very unusual. Also the server was not attentive and we had to constantly keep asking for different items that should have been offered. My meal was just okay in comparison to what I am used to. I most likely will not return to this location.

Yelp
Been eating here for a couple years now. Crispy Pork Belly and Crispy Spicy Chicken are very delicious with the perfect amount of spiciness, they pair well with white or fried rice. I think the sauce on the Golden Mountain Chicken is a little too sweet. Went today on a Thursday night at 6pm and service was SUPER fast. 1 appetizer and 2 entrees came out in about six minutes.
google avatar

Hank N.

Yelp
Went here a couple years ago and then got a take out a couple months ago. The scallion pancakes were great, very filling. The roasted lamb rack was grilled to perfection, juicy and crispy. Take out was very smooth, food was great - the duck with fried onions, the seafood pot went so well with the rice, the spicy pork really kicked my taste buds in the mouth. All reasonably priced, family style dishes.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
We are big fans of Peter Chang and this location was excellent. We got carry out and it was well packed and still hot after our 15 minutes drive home. The Golden Mountain Chicken was excellent and the Lo Mien was fabulous. Happy to have a great Chinese Restaurant in Richmond.

Yelp
Good food . People nice. Great environment. It's right beside roof top bar in scotts edition . Just love this place
google avatar

Rena G.

Yelp
We didn't get a chance to take picture of the appetizer and the rest of the meal. We started with crispy fried belly and fried eggplant. These are our favorites apps. It never fails. We ordered the shrimp with garlic sauce and other veggies along with beef basil. I love our beef with basil sauce. I love that presentation too. Our food was super fast, they were not that busy yet. This is the place that we frequent and brings our out town guest since we love this place so much. Service is always grea
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
Great food. Went with a friend local to Richmond and understand why this is her favorite Szechuan Chinese restaurant. Large portions and friendly service with a cute ambiance. Had the basil chicken, soup buns, sweet and sour chicken and crispy fried pork belly. Would definitely eat here again!

Roy C.

Yelp
We've been to Peter Chang's over 50 times mostly Williamsburg and Short Pump and the food was perfect! we tried 2816 W Broad St 4/20/24 and the food really SUCKS! We will not be back!

Ann S.

Yelp
Just got takeout. It was horrible. They charge extra for rice !!!! The food was overly oily and bland. Paid almost 60.00 for 2 dishes. Do not recommend
google avatar

Casey Q.

Yelp
Of the two Peter Chang restaurants in RVA, this is a distant second place for me when compared to the Short Pump location. Granted, this one is in Currently RVA Hot Neighborhood Scott's Addition, and if you live in the area, walking to/from is way more fun (possible?) than negotiating parking if you're typical-Richmonder-who-freaks-out-about-parallel-parking-and-walking-anywhere (yeah, that's totally NYC-to-RVA transplant snark at you, if the shoe fits). Anyway, this Peter Chang location swings and misses sometimes, which is why only four stars for this one vs the five I gave SP. The bar scene is delightful, so that's a bonus point, but the swing-and-miss stuff is, when you get one of those misses, a disappointment. Still one of the best not-usual-suspect-Chinese-menu places in Virginia, tho. So solid four stars.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
I've tried (and loved) both Peter Chang locations; the West End / Short Pump and the Downtown / VCU locations. The food is the same delicious, high-quality, as-close-to-authentic-as-you-can-find-in-Virginia Chinese fare in both. But the ambience is very different. The VCU location feels much more like an American idea of what a Chinese restaurant feels like, with the color red dominating, and the Chinese hanging lanterns, lots of booths, etc... The Short Pump location feels much more like Chinese restaurants feel in Asia: More open, more tables, etc... Think "more 'Diner', less 'Restaurant'." I like them both, equally, but there is a difference in atmosphere and essence. Another difference is that the VCU location was missing a couple of the menu favorites I'm used to. Our waiter (Hi, Brian!) explained that, due to the recent viral unpleasantness, the VCU location had pivoted toward a large take-out & delivery business and, as a result, some menu items that were more labor-intensive and less "travel friendly" had been removed. He mentioned that this was -- hopefully -- a temporary situation and eventually those items would return to the menu. His explanation had the ring of truth. As we entered the restaurant I noticed that what used to be the bar had been converted to a staging area for takeout and delivery orders. It was stacked with a dozen or so orders waiting to be picked up. I'm happy to see Peter Chang's doing a brisk business, but I hope they can avoid becoming just another Chinese takeout.
google avatar

Jazzlyn V.

Yelp
This place is just not good. I'm a chinese food fanatic and this place just does not do it. I've tried the orange chicken and sweet and sour chicken on two separate occasions. The chicken has no flavor.. none. Not even the sauce helps. The prices are too high. Presentation is nice but that is all. Save your coins.
google avatar

Mercedes M.

Yelp
Service was excellent and food was delicious! We came here on a whim - there was a small wait but we got a table in about 20 minutes. The duck wasn't my favorite but that is a personal preference- the duck was so tender and the broth was delicious / flavorful. I didn't care for the large ginger pieces but - like I said, that's just me. The scallop and brussel sprout dish was incredible - the addition of wasabi was so unexpected but delightful - would definitely get again. Dan Dan noodles: perfect portion for two or three to share (or for an entree for one); this dish was also flavorful - simple but so good! We came in a bit late - close to closing - but were never rushed; service was excellent! Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Aaron C.

Yelp
Wow, oh wow... I'm personally not a huge fan of Chinese cuisine but was pleasantly surprised by every ounce of delicious brought to our table. Would recommend

Diane P.

Yelp
Tonight it appears the food was much better than the last 3 years. Ordered take out Fresh and hot. I have learned when you should order from Peter Chang. The chef makes a major difference. Thursday's was't that good and Friday seems to be better as an example. Choosing the day and finding out the chef on duty
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
I would leave zero stars if I could this place is freaking nasty. There is zero flavor. It's very bland. I don't understand why everybody likes this place. The inside is pretty, but they should put a little money and effort into the food and not just into the into the decor, I picked the number to spicy, and while there were peppers literally in it, there was absolutely no flavor. My friends had the same opinion save yourself some time and some money and find any Chinese takeout around the corner and it will probably be cheaper and a hell of a lot better.

Richie B.

Yelp
The food is incredible and the music is great and if you like spicy food I really recommend the stirred fried shredded chicken with Thai chili. The waitress Gretchen was also very helpful and nice.
google avatar

Sam G.

Yelp
Very busy authentic Chinese restaurant. Take-out is very busy here. They had tables lined up with take out orders when you first walk in. Service could be better but the food never disappoints. We waited 30 minutes for a table without reservations. The steamed soup buns were great starters. Spicy diced chicken was delicious, we got the app size and I liked it so much that I would get the entree size next time. Egg plant in the clay pit were interesting but good. Highly recommend the hot and numbing fish in stone pot if you like fish with a kick.
google avatar

Craig D.

Yelp
(4) ~ very good overall chinese restaurant MENU: ** Peking Duck (half) = (4.25) Very good Presentation ** Pork Dumplings = (4) very tasty ** Water (tap) = (4) very good, must be filtered;) * Scallion Bubble Pancake = (3.75) Good

Yelp
I love Peter Changs. I have written a love letter review in the past and am always happy to eat there. Last night we ordered food to go- we spent about $130 (we really like this food) but it was not good and I am shocked and a little heartbroken. I'm not going to name dishes in the expectation that this was a fluke but Peter Chang! You need to check out what's going on at your Scott's Addition restaurant. They missed the mark and need to get the mojo back. I'm giving it 2 stars because they are better than this. I will try again and when I do I will post a great review because I BELIEVE.

Elise I.

Yelp
Food is good when you actually get it. We have had meals forgotten on multiple occasions. Service is slow and often grumpy. This most recent time we attempted to ask about paying up front since our server was not around and had asked for the check 10 minutes prior, we were told "sit down and talk with your family".
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
Been here multiple times. As a Chinese person I must say this food is pretty good although it is on the expensive side. They get the flavors right. I'm not sure if things are better when you eat in person because some items are more soggy and less crunchy when you bring it home for carry out.
google avatar

Devika J.

Yelp
Big fan of the schezuan cuisine offered here. Specifically, the bubble pancake is one of a kind, mapo tofu is delicious, and the kung pao chicken is highly recommended. Food's not too spicy, tho if you want you can get the chilli oil that packs flavor & spice.
google avatar

Gracie B.

Yelp
I came here Thursday night without a reservation and we were sat very quickly. The service was nice and prompt. I ordered the tofu vegetable soup and vegetable spring rolls. The spring rolls were crisp and delicious. The soup was also great. It was flavorful and loaded with veggies and tofu. The soup was a large portion that lasted me two meals!

Audrey G.

Yelp
Peter Chang is some of the best Chinese food in Richmond, especially if you like Sichuan style. To me their food is high quality and authentic, which is hard to find- the other Chinese restaurants I like in Richmond are all more like Asian fusion. Some stuff is super hot. Our tolerance is pretty low and we like the black pepper beef, seafood in stone pot, beef chow fun, dry-friend broccoli and definitely the soup dumplings. We order them every time
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Consistent food! Lots of gluten free options. The kids are obsessed with the bao and soup dumplings (not gluten free).
google avatar

Carpe D M.

Yelp
Really good food, great service. I see why this is an award-winning restaurant! It has an elegant atmosphere, but is priced reasonably well, considering the pedigree.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Why do people love this place so much? As long as Peter Chang has been around, I've never been--until today. And only because my mom wanted Chinese. And I honestly regret the waste of time (though service was good and atmosphere was okay), money and calories. We would've been just as good going with any old corner Chinese restaurant. I can't access an accurate menu right now to tell you the exact items we ordered, but I think it was Golden Chicken, pork belly, fried rice and some kind of buns that the waitress recommended. The buns were okay. The Golden Chicken didn't even look golden. It looked more orange. And it definitely didn't taste like chicken. My pork belly was really fatty and way too salty to even enjoy. The fried rice needed more soy sauce. For Chinese food lovers, you may love this place. I'm not a Chinese food lover, but I give credit where it's due when it's due. I know better to trust my instincts. Never again.

Chi P.

Yelp
I came in last night and ordered food. The waiter was nice enough to take the to go order for me. Once the order came in, i asked the manager for chili oil. He gives me one. I asked him for another one. He refused and said one per order and no more. New rules. I informed him that we have 4 dishes and this would not be enough. He informs me new rules and you have to buy it. I asked him to provide number of the person who i can express my concern. He informed me that person does not speak english and you cannot talk to him. I asked him what is your name. He would not give me name and told me he is tired and closing time so leave. Rude manager and over cheap chilli oil. This used to be really customer oriented restaurant but it is going down as they expand.
