New York Steakhouse Peter Luger Will Expand to Tokyo | Eater

"A planned Tokyo outpost being developed in partnership with Wondertable, Ltd.; the owners have been in discussions for about three years and are taking a careful, deliberate approach to execution. The parent team will handle training and meat selection, running tests and remote selection strategies to ensure American beef meets their standards, and many of their U.S. purveyors already export to Tokyo so they expect no drop in quality. They do not plan to work with wagyu or kobe, remaining committed to USDA prime beef, and will include a dry-aging room; finding a central Tokyo site large enough for dry-aging, a big kitchen, and roughly 150 seats has been challenging. The design will try to evoke the original’s old-world charm where possible, while respecting the constraints of the chosen space, and the owners say the project is important and personally significant to their family legacy." - Hillary Dixler Canavan

The atmosphere and service are absolutely top tier, making the entire dining experience feel special. But the absolute highlight has to be the steak—they’ve mastered the art of the perfect sear. The crust was incredibly crispy and executed to perfection. It is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive steakhouse experiences I’ve ever had. Highly recommended!

I usually prefer the original location when it comes to restaurants but in this case, I actually prefer this spot over the original one in Brooklyn. Everything was better, from the overall experience to the steak to the sundae. I’m honestly glad this branch is better than the original; now I don’t need to fly 24 hours to get Peter Luger when I can just fly 6. What really surprised me was how upscale Peter Luger in Tokyo feels. The steak and its juices were somehow more flavorful and tender, and the sundae was no exception. Even the gold chocolate coins taste better here — don’t ask me how. Just go try it yourself.

Everything was excellent - from the moment you enter with an attendant direction you to the receptionist to taking your coat to store to a host brining you to your table and the servers who attend to your needs. The food is the star of the show so order the steak with the sizzling plate plus a siding and you are good to go! I couldn't compare to the NYC branch but I enjoyed my meal with enough char and burnt edges without having it be too hard or bitter to chew. Perfectly flavorful with or without the Peter Luger sauce. They serve single portions too for lone dinners like myself on this quick trip. I would come back again with the family. Tip: Reserve your table if you can.

Honestly, was very excited to go. we reached and were seated shortly after. Initially we were having difficulty speaking and understanding the staff. We were asking if it’s possible to order the burger upstairs in the main dining area. After waiting 10 minutes we were moved to the bar which out an explanation, only that we can only eat the burger at the bar. Which isn’t somewhere pleasant as the atmosphere at the bar was very underwhelming. whilst at the bar our food took 30 minutes, as opposed to the 15 minutes we were told it would that. The steak reached medium rare and we requested medium. The burger didn’t taste pleasant but was very dry which is surprising. The steak was brown on the edges moving into completely pink in the middle which did not look medium, we then informed them to cook the steak again and the crust felt brunt and didn’t taste good, they also removed the T bone and brought the steaks left by itself. The steak itself was dry and tasted bland and the burger was nothing special. The staff were slow and it was hard to understand them, they also kept the water behind so we’d have to wait for the waiter to refill our water. The bill came out to 50,490 yen which is very expensive for in my opinion some under average usda steak for two and a burger and cream spinach . Very underwhelming experience and won’t be visiting again.

June 6, 2025 Absolutely delicious and very high quality American steak. Impeccably polite service and classy ambience worthy of a high class steak house. It matches the price tag and is worth special celebrations. You’ll leave impressed and satisfied. Loved the place thoroughly. I even got to bring leftover bones home for broth and some chocolate coins for snacks.

We’re a bit disappointed. Food was a bit under expectation. The chef puts a lot a lot A LOT of salt on everything. The salt overpowered the taste of the steak. It’s a shame. Hope they learn how to cook steak without putting excessive amount of salt on it. I will not recommend this restaurant. There are a lot of better options with better price tags.

Slightly disappointed by the quality of beef. With a price tag of 20000 yen, I expected high quality T-bone, though the meat is not that tendered and taste just average. The service and atmosphere are top-notched. It is indeed a nice place to dine with your friends or partner.

I always wanted to try Peter Luger and being in Tokyo I got my chance, overall the experience was fantastic. From the initial walk in where the staff greeted us to guiding to the table, to the ordering of the food and plating everything went perfectly. Food wise we ordered the 28 day aged porterhouse for 3 and lamb chops, with slice tomato (and luger sauce) for appetizer, broccoli, cream spinach and french fries for sides. I would say the slide tomato is a must for tomato lovers, the quality combined with the luger sauce it very unique, then sides I would recommend the cream spinach and the broccoli. The steak itself was definitely cooked over open fire (pretty sure it was not Sous vide but purely over fire) the crust was thick and crunchy but yet the core was medium rare as requested, the meat was flavorful with a balance salt/pepper and moist and tender with a good texture, comparatively it was among the best steaks I've had. A bottle of wine starts around 10k yen, a decent bottle would set you back about 12 - 18k yen. Glass of wine would be around 1.4k towards 3k per glass. Decent one would be around 2k yen a glass. Our Aust Shiraz bottle was around 12k Special shout out to our server Joe who really ensured we were well taken care of, from the order to the serving of food he never missed a beat. He always ensured our wine glasses were topped up (literally eyes at the back of his head). At the end of the meal he even splashed out a set of gold luger chocolate coins which really fascinated my kids. Another shout out out to Beeky who really took care of my kids and made my kids feel at home with his light humor and warmth, really took special attention to make sure my youngest was alright as she needed as she is quite a picky eater. And also to all the staff we encountered, overall the nights experience could not have gone better. Cheers!
