"On the so-called quiet side of Mount Desert Island, this waterfront tavern serves a menu of Maine seafood and southern fare. Crab cakes, fried chicken, tender biscuits, and a comically large fried fish sandwich are highlights from Georgia-born chef Ryan Lamon. Beverage options include a full bar, wine, and a wide-ranging selection of canned Maine beers." - Kate McCarty

This place was recommended by someone at the inn we were staying at in Bar Harbor. It has such a lovely view! Definitely worth a stop if you’re on that side of the island. It wasn’t busy at all when we were there (for a very late breakfast/brunch) but it was also the off season. I can imagine that most places on the island are busy during the summer. A lot of places are closed for the off season so we were very glad to find this one open! Coffee was good. My husband got a cocktail, I think some kind of brunch mule, which he liked. My sandwich was messy of course but delicious.

Crab cake was incredible. Probably one of the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly prepared and not crazy priced. Bar tender had awesome service. A definite go to. Fish sandwich looked great too.

Drop whatever you're doing and head to Peter Trout's! It's a very casual, welcoming tavern with a stunning view but the FOOD! My husband and I ordered the halibut sandwich (caught right in the harbor out front), fiddleheads (local & in season now) and oysters (blondes from bar harbor & cranberries off the islands right there) to share. The sandwich was insane - I've lived in coastal Virginia eating fresh seafood all my life and this was the best halibut I've ever had hands down. It was two thick filets perfectly fried, with a light crisp breading on a grilled brioche bun with house made slaw & pickles. The oysters were fantastic and were served with a charred lemon half & house made chili oil which was flavorful but not so hot that it overpowered. The fiddleheads tasted fresh & earthy and were perfectly sautéed and seasoned. This meal could not have been better and is likely the best one I'll have all summer! Phenomenal.

Google
We ordered a couple of fish sandwiches to take back to our hotel. When we got inside and opened the containers our jaws dropped. There was more fish than could possibly fit in a sandwich. It was a little bit over breaded, but still very good. One meal easily turned into two with all of that extra fish. My picture doesn’t do justice to how much was actually in there. Updated to Add: we loved this place so much that we went back for brunch a couple of days later. Husband had the prime rib eggs benedict, and I had the smoked salmon omelette. Both were delicious. The staff was so attentive and friendly. Highly impressed!

Google
Dockside tavern that punches above its weight, both in quality and breadth of food options. While the beer selection was a little lacking (like 6 beers on tap), it’s forgivable given the smaller scale of the place and well made up for by the bartenders’ knowledge of cocktails. One of, if not maybe the best, fried fish sandwich I’ve ever had; there are options now for “small” and “large” fried fish sandwiches too, should you not have the capacity for leftovers. Friendly, neighborly staff and fantastic views of the mountains across the sound.

Google
This is the best chicken sandwich I’ve ever had! It was crispy, juicy, and absolutely delicious. The location offers a beautiful view of the ocean and has a cozy, homely atmosphere.

Google
Gourmet pub food with local beers. I had the breakfast burger and some sautéed Brussels sprouts. Delicious! The Brussels sprouts were cooked in garlic and lemon. I don’t really like Brussel sprouts and I could not stop eating them!! I took half home and had a meal the next day. The restaurant has an old pub feel and an eclectic vibe. The view is one of the best on the island. Definitely worth the trip. 🤩😋

Google
I had the fried fish sandwich. It was delicious and huge! Crispy breading and flaky white fish. The table split tinned fish as an appetizer. We shared four different tins and they were all delicious. Lunch was great and it would be a great spot for a beer and snacks. I loved the atmosphere, it had a great view of the harbor.

Joyce H.

Yelp
Ordered the Cesar salad with a fried chicken add on, with some biscuits on the side. Enjoyed everything especially the biscuits. I learned that their specialty was tinned fish. I like that they have seating outside with a water view.

Nate H.

Yelp
Very cool place on the harbor, good food, nice bourbon selection as well. Service was good and decorations were fun.

Yelp
One year later and Peter Trout has gone downhill. Many items listed on their website were not available. We got the whole fried chicken, which I would say was underseasoned and a bit greasy and dry. The chicken sandwich was not "hot" but it tasted OK. The biscuits were like lead. They forgot to include pickles. A big disappointment.

Yelp
Delicious fresh food fun night out in Manset right around the corner from Southwest Harbor . Delicious cocktails great beers and wines . Loved that you could sit out on a nice evening and great space indoors as well loved the bar. Looking forward to our next meal at Peter Trouts and can't wait to try the weekend brunch !

Yelp
Scrumptious chicken sandwiches! So juicy and yummy. Their peas and cheese on sour bread was also delicious! great beer choices too. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This spot reminded me of a place I'd find at home (Brooklyn) and was hands down the best food I've eaten in a national park town We happened upon this place since we were staying down the road. As someone who eats vegetarian 95% of the time, I was attracted to all the thoughtfully crafted veggie sides. It was pretty packed on a Friday night but we were able to get seated outside right away. Staff was pleasant, laid back but still attentive I ended up getting the mushroom egg toast and shared a bunch of sides with my husband. -mushroom toast was excellent sourdough grilled, buttered and topped with delicious mushroom. The egg was a bit hard but it did have some runniness to it -market fish sandwich was enormous! Looked ridiculous in one little brioche bun. This could definitely be split between two people. It came with crispy potatoes which were so good, you'll only wish there were more of them -biscuits with whipped honey butter- save room for these. They're off the hook tasty -asparagus - small portion, but cooked perfectly -heirloom tomatoes- so sweet and refreshing. I'm not a fan of raw onions but they're easy to avoid -corn - was sweet and fresh, but could have done with less mayo and more seasoning If you're looking for elegant food in a dreamy laid back coastal atmosphere- who isn't- check this out!

Luca C.

Yelp
Ate here twice on our last vacation, and I have to say this is probably the best food out I have ever eaten. Both times we got the market, fish sandwich, smashed potatoes and asparagus. The fish by itself was the best we'd ever had, but with the tartar sauce or the sauce from the asparagus it was simply amazing. The smashed potatoes are the best preparation of a potato I have ever encountered, and the portions were all very good. Given the quality I think the prices are incredibly reasonable. If this food were in Boston, you would never be able to get it nor could you afford it.

Yelp
The location is spectacular with amazing views of Some Sound and Acadia. The service was average at best. The waitress was extremely nice but wasn't around often despite the restaurant being pretty quite. The food took over an hour for 4 sandwiches and 2 kids meals(grilled cheese). The fish sandwich was excellent but outrageously priced($38). Lobster Rolls are cheaper around the island than a haddock sandwich. I can go to best restaurant in Bar Harbor (Havana) and get a extremely upscale dining experience for less. Maybe we'll be back for a beer at the picnic tables but wait time and price will deter us from dining again.

Yelp
Wow, so glad we tried this place! It's on a list of essential Maine restaurants and now I know why. It's in Southwest Harbor, tucked away near a real working boat launch. We went for late lunch on a Friday and got our choice of seats. Ordered the crab cake and the fried chicken sandwich, and they were both super large and fantastic! The chicken included 3 thighs (tender inside, nice amount of coating), with homemade pickle slices and a little aioli, and more aioli served on the side. Delicious! And even better we're the fried smashed fingerling potatoes! I could have eaten tons! Nicely crispy and salted. And the crab cake. Oh, the crab cake. Wide and tall, and full of large chunks of fresh crab, and what I'm guessing are chunks of the same buttery brioche that the sandwich was served on. Iced tea was excellent classic tea, and only $2 including a refill :-) Go find this place - you'll be glad you did.

Yelp
In the midst of a hunger-induced rush after our Lobster Charter, we stumbled upon Peter Trout's Tavern and Inn in Southwest Harbor, Maine, and let me tell you, it was a game-changer. The unanimous sentiment among the guys was that this spot housed the best food we had all week in Maine. My personal standout was the Market Fish Sandwich of the day, an absolute delight that left me thoroughly impressed. The variety of oysters only added to the culinary experience, showcasing the freshness and quality of the seafood. As a group, we went all out, ordering a plethora of appetizers that practically covered the entire menu, and to top it off, a massive $100 steak that lived up to its hefty price tag. Peter Trout's Tavern and Inn left an indelible mark on our taste buds, earning a solid 10/10 rating. The combination of exceptional food, a diverse menu, and a vibrant atmosphere made it a standout dining experience in Southwest Harbor. Without a doubt, I'd be back again, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone in search of a remarkable culinary adventure in Maine

Yelp
Oh my goodness! We had no idea how this would be based on the outside! When we walked in it appeared just like a local's tavern. But then the extensive and somewhat high end bar caught our attention. We were looking for breakfast/ brunch and had no idea what an amazing menu this place has! I ordered cranberry mimosa and crab eggs Benedict. It was fantastic. It was also overwhelming! Instead of English muffins, it was on two housemade biscuits. The crab was perfect and plentiful. The famous smashed potatos came with.... I tried but could not eat it all! Hubby got biscuits and gravy with eggs! Plentiful and yum! Our friends got the..., not sure what they called it but the pity bitty burger with bacon, eggs on it.... They each ate about half! Delightful. Good service. Fantastic views. Have no idea about dinner but, if it's half as good..... a " must return" for our next trip!!

Robert G.

Yelp
Crab cakes were awesome along with the slaw. Don't usually care for restaurant slaw as it's just covered in mayo. Not this slaw, it was delicious. Get some smashed potatoes, these are fingerling potatoes crisp yet soft and tender. The fish and chips were no joke. Thought I was going to get a couple pieces of small fish with fries. Nope 3 large hanging over the plate crispy fish on top of a bed of smashed potatoes. Highly recommend this place. Great service, great food, and the music was good ole rock and roll.

Mark J.

Yelp
I am so glad I happened on Peter Trout's Tavern. The haddock sandwich I had was the best meal I had on my Maine trip and I ate in some fancy pants places. The sandwich was the perfect combination of flavors and hit the spot. The service was good and the place had what I was thinking of when I picture a Maine waterfront tavern--nothing cute or phony. My regret is that I went there on my last day at Acadia. I would have loved to have tried more things on their menu. If the fried fish sandwich was that good I'm sure everything else would have been topnotch.

Jason B.

Yelp
Gigantic fish sandwich, fried chicken, and crabcake. Come hungry. Sign up at the wait list by the door. Worth the wait. Opposite harbor master and a local pier with parking.

Katrina L.

Yelp
We enjoyed our meal at Peter Trout's - the picnic tables outside provide a great view of the water. We came during brunch hours and I wish we could've ordered from the full menu as the brunch menu was a bit limited. The breakfast burger ($17) with egg and pork belly was absolutely delicious, but doesn't come with anything - I added some smashed potatoes which were pretty good. My husband had the crab cake Benedict - also delicious and came with a few smashed potatoes on the side. The server was nice, but I think was attending to almost every table and so our meal was a bit on the slower side (with a view like theirs, not necessarily a bad thing, but we had a little one with us who gets restless). We would probably return, but would prioritize the regular lunch or dinner menu.

Twila T.

Yelp
Best food on MDI - all of it was simply exquisite. Appetizer of sautéed mushrooms on grilled bread with a lightly fried egg, fried haddock sandwich with fresh pickles and spicy coleslaw on grilled brioche, and sides to die for - pickled radish, garlic scapes, asparagus and cucumber, braised greens, and grilled asparagus plus craft brews - OMG!!! And a view of Manset Harbor and mountains with fog drifting in and out of sailboats to boot!

Kristin H.

Yelp
We had a delicious meal here. Everything was lovely; the sandwiches were delicious, the beer was obviously excellent, the service was delightful. Of particular note- the biscuits with maple butter, the smashed potatoes, and the pickles... would highly recommend.

Marshall W.

Yelp
All of the food i tried was delicious. Huge portions as well. The service was good and a great view of the harbor from where we were sat.

Brian W.

Yelp
This place is dope. While the first time I was here was quite good, this time I got the fried chicken which was ridiculously awesome. So. Good. All the sides were great as well, especially the biscuits. The vibe here is awesome, great views. I've sat at the bar both times I've been, and it's a nice locals vibe. Seriously a cool place.

Samantha A.

Yelp
The cranberry island oysters were the best oysters I've had in my entire life. This is more of a local spot which is refreshing to find. We also had the fried chicken and multiple sides that were all delicious. Not to mention there were beautiful views!

Keith D.

Yelp
Tasty food, great microbrew selection, and fantastic view. You can eat inside or outside at one of the many large picnic tables.

Marcus S.

Yelp
I never thought that the best eating in Bar Harbor was in fact just outside of Bar Harbor. Peter Trout's Tavern sound and even at first glance looks like your run of the mill eat and drink spot near the water, but looks are deceiving. The food was terrific. I decided to step back from seafood, eyed the 'Nashville hot fried chicken sammy'. If people were fighting over the Popeye's chicken sandwiches, I think a full on brawl would break out if there was a shortage on these. This sandwich was so good, it's almost surreal. The cutlet exceeded the size of the sandwich, which is always welcome. Bread/bun should never overshadow the meat. The bun itself was excellent. Whatever sauce is on it is delicious. It's listed on the menu as "spicy stuff". What it is, it's damn good. Not done yet. The Biscuits are awesome. Nice, flaky, hot and came with a honey butter. I did not know it existed and I'm glad to now know it exists. Even re-heating ones not finished a couple days later, and they were still great. We got a shareable arugula plate. Again on the mark. Fresh with a nice peppery flavor and lightly sauced. I normally don't call out staff by name but Suzette was wonderful. Had good beer recommendations and did swell all around. Again if you're in or near Bar Harbor. Get outta there, and come to Peter Trouts. It was the best place I ate at on the island and it's not even close.

Joan M.

Yelp
My family and I came for dinner on a Thursday. We all had some version of fried chicken (either whole or sandwich), which was delicious. My husband's fried chicken portion on his sandwich was very small, taking up less than half the bun, but he was able to supplement with extra from our sons' fried chicken platter. Service was a bit slow but friendly. Ambiance is casual and view into Southwest Harbor was lovely.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Professional and friendly service, fun decor and really tasty food at fair prices for the area. Whay more do you want?

Caroline L.

Yelp
This was our first meal on MDI. Since we were staying in Southwest Harbor this was perfect it has a great location by the water, friendly service and good food. Hubs had the friend haddock sandwich which he said was delicious (and HUGE!) and as a vegetarian I did a mix of sides. All were tasty but since they brought all the food out at the same time, some were getting cold and had clearly been sitting awhile waiting on the fish. Service was great, we enjoyed our meal here.

Marie T.

Yelp
Hands down the best food on the Mount Desert Island. Peter Trout's is serving and giving alllll the flavor (that often times a lot of Maine restaurants are missing). An absolute must visit: 10/10 food, atmosphere, quick service, & drinks. you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, seriously.

Susan W.

Yelp
Visiting family for the holiday!! Checked Yelp reviews and thought we should check this place out. Wow!! The reviews are spot on!!! Hamburger, Sammy fried chicken, and the crab cake. All were amazing! Loved the side fingerling potatoes. Also ordered sides of biscuits. we will be back!!! PS outdoor seating with fabulous views

Bill B.

Yelp
Wonderful! First day to the area and everything is closed except Peter Trout's. Terrific restaurant in a great spot with great food and selection of local beers.

Susan T.

Yelp
We went for their Sunday breakfast after being recommended by a local. We were there right at 10am, ordered within a reasonable amount of time and didn't get our food until almost 11, with no warning or heads up by our waiter that eggs and toast would be delayed (we didn't order anything fancy - three orders of scrambled eggs and toast and one breakfast burger). The food was just about inedible. Sourdough bread that was soaked in butter, grilled to black and so crispy it hurt your mouth, biscuits (that we had to pay extra for) that were a pile of butter and flour and eggs so runny and cold I'm not sure what they did with them. The sausage was good, the view is amazing.

Tami W.

Yelp
Every bite was delicious and service was friendly and great too! My husband I were on vacation in Southwest Harbor from Nashville and stopped into Peter's Trout Tavern for lunch. We were actually their first customers of the day. We started with the biscuits with honey butter and the wedge salad - both were amazing. My husband ordered the haddock fish sandwich and I ordered the fish and chips - both served with smashed potatoes and WOW!! So so good and huge portions! We left with enough food for dinner that night. You should definitely check it out!

Gregg C.

Yelp
Was staying in Southwest Harbor and found this place. It's a mix of locals and visitors. Service and food were excellent. We will be back and we live in Pennsylvania.

Greg M.

Yelp
Go for the food! Stay for the view & the staff. It's a must stop in SW Harbor. The chicken is off the charts! Great beer list.

Jen B.

Yelp
We finally went to Peter Trout's - the closest place to where we stayed. It turned out to be a great choice for salads for lunch. We both had Caesar salads with fried chicken added and they were delicious! We were surprised to see the ginormous fried fish sandwiches ordered by other parties on the patio. I wished we had time to go back to try those - the fish was waaay bigger than the bread that held it. The place is right on the road in front of the harbor boat dock. Easy to park and great view of all the activity.

Susan M.

Yelp
Peter Trouts is good if you like fried foods. Everything goes into the fryer, including the smashed fingerling potatoes. Huge portions of fried fish.

Paula C.

Yelp
Ten Stars !!!! Absolutely the best haddock I have ever the the pleasure of eating. Service was great! Open almost year round. I can't wait to try brunch!

Diane P.

Yelp
Highly recommend Peter Trout's. The staff is great and the food is above and beyond what you would consider pub fare. The staff is very proud that everything the make is made fresh onsite. Their pride in their food and drinks carries through in their outstanding service. This place was recommended to us and did not disappoint. Well worth seeking it out.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
This was a local spot right on the water with great views of the boats and harbor! You can sit outside on cute picnic benches complete with a gingham cloth. Perfect spot for lunch on a sunny day! The service was excellent and so friendly. We were immediately offered cold beer and the order was taken soon after. Although they were unfortunately out of many options that day, especially the seafood which seems very popular, we were still impressed by our selections. I ordered the arugula salad to start and the tomato sandwich. The salad was huge, so perfect for sharing! The sandwich was also twice as big as I thought it would be and soo good. I ate the whole thing! The prices were reasonable to boot.

Brenda T.

Yelp
The view is nice, the service nonexistent and the food mediocre at best. I was hoping for more than an aioli heavy fried hamburger and two smashed undercooked new potatoes. They were out of fish and chips, maybe I should be glad they were. Very disappointed

Kristi M.

Yelp
We dropped in here for lunch at a local friend's recommendation. They are definitely operating on a scaled back basis right now - only outdoor dining and to-go available. We sat outside on a Monday around 1 PM. Several other customers came to take advantage of the beer and wine to go while we ate. But other than that - activity was light. So - please check this place out for a bit if you are in the area. :-) We tried the meatloaf sandwich, fried chicken sandwich, the potato salad, sweet corn and biscuits! I would get any of these items again. It was all so good. And there were many other items I want to try! The meatloaf sandwich was served on toasted sourdough with a tomato jam. The meatloaf was so tender and light. Not something you can item say about meatloaf. The fried chicken sandwich was moist and almost flaky - comments were made that it was almost as flaky as fried fish. My only caution was that it took a while for food to come out - but we weren't in a hurry! And it was more than worth the wait! I do hope to come here again next year on my annual trek to the Island!

Amy B.

Yelp
The food and atmosphere can't be beat! We were there at beginning of August. Very memorable. We actually went back a couple nights later before leaving for home.

Kathy L.

Yelp
I meant to take a picture of my meal but forgot. The haddock sandwich is one of my favs - light, oversized piece with just enough salt and smashed potatoes on the side. Comfortable local pub atmosphere is a welcome relief to the uptight theme restaurants I have visited in the past. HIGHLY stopping by for a meal if you're in the area

Morris H.

Yelp
Well, we arrived at 6 PM. 15 minutes later placed drink order. Mistake for us is that we didn't order food immediately, even if that might have made a difference. 7:30 food arrived. Food was very good , but to wait over an hour was bad. No explanation. And two other tables that ordered well after us got their food at the same time as us My big complaint is that no one bothered to ever say anything. Our waitress never came back at all, and another server is who brought our food. No offer for water refill or to order additional drinks I would like to go back, but I can't wait 1 1/2 hours for a sandwich!

Bethany R.

Yelp
The ambiance here was very maine campy kitschy and we were here for it. The food was absolutely 10/10! The menu was surprisingly different. Classic pub food and the wide variety of tinned fish was perfectly unique. My steak sandwich was perfectly cooked and the seasoning was so good. Probably the best steak sandwich in my life. The rest in my party really enjoyed the hot chicken sandwich and the Caesar salad. I'm taking off one star for the service. The waiter seemed irritated, inattentive and ignored the younger people at the table entirely. Had he been a little more engaged we probably would have been more adventurous with the food and beverage menu. We will definitely be back for the food. So good!

Gillian W.

Yelp
We were directed to a table, Sitting there for 10 mins, nobody came or even was bothered to give us the menu. And it's 11 in the morning and only half of the table is full. I don't care about third food or not. This one deserves a 0.

Fatimah A.

Yelp
First time I ate here and I'm so happy I found this little gem. Best fried chicken sandwich I've had in a long time! Great service and good food. Also forgot to mention the beautiful harbor view I experienced while having a late lunch with a girl friend who's a local captain. We both loved it!

Kathy L.

Yelp
Mothers Day brunch - wow so good - eggs Benedict with crab cake was so rich and delicious- portion size was generous - great local restaurant with comfortable atmosphere

Rosy F.

Yelp
Such a fantastic spot! Super friendly and incredible service. The canned white tuna belly fillet with grilled sourdough melted in your mouth. And the crispy chicken sandwich was perfection!! Thank you for such a wonderful afternoon treat!

Jeremy B.

Yelp
Great food, quirky atmosphere. The food is fantastic, and one of the few places to eat on the backside of MDI. The staff is friendly but the beer prices are pretty steep

Mike R.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem and worth the trip. Not a tourist trap like many restaurants in the area. Serves many locals but also welcomes us tourists. We went in the afternoon for a drink and came back in the evening for dinner. Had great conversations with the staff there. You must try the fish sandwich!

Kevin M.

Yelp
The food here was incredible. We were skeptical when we arrived. Looked like a lot of locals. We went here our first night on MDI because it was within walking distance. Got a drink from the bar while we waited for a table. The staff was hustling to keep up but they showed no signs of being frustrated or overwhelmed. All very friendly and chill. I got half fried chicken and my wife got a burger. We both said they were the best versions of each that we ever had. That didn't even mention the amazing smashed fingerling potatoes. We even wrote a note on our bill to make sure they let the chef know it was amazing. That was a first! We were so disappointed that they were closed the next two nights because we were wanting to go back every night of our stay and try the rest of the menu.
