16 Excellent Spots to Enjoy Clams Around New York | Eater NY

"While nearby Bigelow’s serves New England-style fried clams, Peter’s Clam Bar — founded in 1940 — is the local favorite. From its decks and expansive dining rooms, one can sometimes see clammers in their hip waders tonging their way through the offshore grasses, though most of the shellfish now come from further east on Long Island. Yes, there are chowders, steamers, stuffies, linguine and clam sauce, and clambakes, but perhaps best of all are the raw clams on the half shell, spectacularly fresh." - Robert Sietsema

How a Bike Crash Forced Eater’s Critic to Grapple With Dining in a Wheelchair | Eater NY

"For a big thank-you meal we went to Peter’s Clam House, a quintessential Long Island restaurant where maneuvering the wheelchair through the packed dining room was impossible and I had to rely on a cane and an opioid to get around, but where anything involving clams reliably made me perfectly happy even if the food was never quite as good as I’d hoped." - Robert Sietsema

Had a chance to finally get to this place after passing it for many years and I regret passing it so many times and not experiencing how amazing this place is! The atmosphere is outstanding right on the water and when you sit outside it’s very nice and relaxing inside was gorgeous as well! Then the food and drinks were outstanding! The calamari was cooked perfectly and flavor filled and not greasy and my first time having swordfish and it was amazing! Definitely will be coming back here this is a must try spot!

Google
A great place for date night, or family dinners, you can't go wrong at Peter's! Located right on the waterway, it's beautiful scenery while enjoying dinner and good company. We stopped by over the weekend to have dinner with the family when celebrating a birthday. Everything came out great, and everyone was happy. The service was great, we were take care of immediately. There were several dishes ordered, but I had the lobster mac and cheese along with the surf and turf. The Mac and cheese were really good. The surf and turf was cooked how we liked it, and it was tender and flavorful. Definitely a must try if you're looking for an evening dinner place, or even a lunch date.

Google
This was a great spur of the moment spot. After a wonderful beach day, being able to chow down on the amazing lobster Mac and cheese hit the spot. Portion sizes were huge, the food came out so fast, and the water front view was relaxing! The side salad game was below average for how great the entrees are. But outside of that it was a great spot

Google
Great spot for lunch right on the water. Food was good and priced right for the area. Service was excellent too. This is one of those places you will always drive by and wonder if it’s worth a try- it definitely is!

Lunch at Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park, NY right on the water. We started with crab cakes. She had the stuffed flounder and I had the fried clam strips (a nostalgia dish for me; it reminded me of Howard Johnson’s!). Everything was delicious and the service was great!

This restaurant is fantastic. The service was great. The food equally great. We had a greatc time, enjoyed amazing food and went home with leftovers. If you are in town I would make it a stop. Photos of 2 of the meals at at able of 9.

Google
From the outside it looks much smaller than it actually is. There are also dock slots in addition to a parking lot. The food and drinks were good.

First time there. My cousin and his wife have been there many times. I can see why he is a repeat customer. Excellent food. Very good service. Nice atmosphere looking out over the water.

Yelp
Peter's Clam Bar is a local legend and rightfully so. Tucked along the water, this place feels like a living piece of Long Island history. It's been part of the community for years, and walking in feels like coming home. The clams? Absolutely unreal. Fresh doesn't even begin to describe it. Each one tastes like it was pulled from the ocean just moments before hitting your plate. The cherrystones were a personal favorite of mine. plump, cold, perfectly briny, and bursting with flavor. There's something beautifully simple and old-school about Peter's. No frills, no gimmicks, just quality seafood and a deep sense of tradition. It's the kind of place that doesn't need to shout to be heard. It's been doing things right for decades, and it shows. If you're craving that pure, salty taste of the sea and a side of local charm, this is the spot.

Yelp
This visit was a real disappointment. We started off with the chowders - New England better than Manhattan (the Manhattan tasted old with lack of flavor). The calamari was too cold by the time it got to the table. We looked forward to our entrees, but it just got worse. The lobster in the grilled cheese did not taste fresh at all, and the salmon burger was "ok" at best, as it was the safest thing we had. The french fries were warm and got us through the meal. We tried to let management know about our meals. They took off the cost of the chowder and calamari, but the total after was still not worth it ($146). This used to be a staple for the area, but it has definitely lost it's touch. The people are nice and the view is great, but getting food here is not a pleasant experience.

Yelp
Went to Peter's on Friday evening with my extended family and had great service and the food was delicious. We ordered way too much food but I definitely enjoyed my crab cakes. We ate outback and it was a perfect meal with incredible family.

Yelp
Being a local for many more years than I like to admit, we don't usually go to Peters for more than clams and oysters. Today we wanted an outdoor locale so we opted for lunch on the outdoor deck, which was very nice. The food, eh. Clams were delish of course, steamers were very good. New England Chowder was thin, lacked clams and spice. I ordered the cold seafood salad, very bland, needed herbs, garlic, salt.......just about everything, the actual seafood was cooked well. Our other folks had the fried platter, it was ok, but needed seasoning in the worst way. Service was very good, nice location, but next time I'll stick to the clam bar!

Yelp
We'll start off with a solid 5. This is my first review here and visit but I can't imagine that I haven't been here before since I know about Peters since I'm 15 and friends of mine came here all the time. My group of five were greeted by multiple very happy hostesses which really sets the tone for how the experience will be. We were escorted to a lovely round corner table surrounded by windows to an amazing view of the patio dining and surrounding water. Overall, it is a great atmosphere here, especially with many people coming back from the beach Since the restaurant was not too busy we were able to comfortably sit and talk for a while prior to ordering. The wait staff here is fantastic and detailed. They are a comfortable group to work with. Here is a summation of our food: Appetizers: - Fabulous-tasty New England clam chowder - Wonderful Manhattan clam chowder - Clams on the half shell - Cold, fresh and very tasty - Fried Calamari - Great crisp outer coating and tasty squid Main Meal: - Linguine with Clam Sauce - Plenty of clams and tasty linguine - Fried Clam Strips - DELICIOUS - a very heaping portion of clams with fries and coleslaw. Had the second half for lunch the next day. - Shrimp Cocktail - Three large and very tasty (well prepared shrimp) - Octopus Salad - Great order with plenty of Octopus and fresh salad. Could not have been any happier and I look forward to coming back soon. KUDO's to the team at Peter's Clam Bar

Yelp
It's a beautiful restaurant on the water. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Their portions are worth the money. Their lobster grilled cheese is my favorite menu item. The drinks are good as well.

Yelp
The Best Long Beach Gem Love - Love - LOVE it here. The food is so fresh! Lobster roll, clam chowder, shrimp cocktail, sangria, and the lobster Sando made the cut the night I went for a visit with my folds. The season is just ending and I'm so glad I got in one more time. Food, service, ambience 5/5. Parked right outside. They have two bars. 5/5 I highly recommend.

Yelp
We visited Peter's clam bar on 7/06/25 for dinner. It was pretty crowded but we got a table right away. The waitress, Juliet, greeted us and let us know that the kitchen was backed up due to the large crowd they had and we may have to wait a while for dinner. She continued to update us and offered to bring out a bread basket to hold us over. The wait wasn't too long before our appetizers came out and the dinner was not long after. The food was great and Juliet did a great job of keeping us informed on the status of our dinner throughout the evening. We will be back soon!

Yelp
Food is good. Not every dish is my favorite, so what ever I order was tasty. :) I love their red clams chowder soup! It's delicious! I prefer to go there only summer time since you can seat outside and enjoy bay view! Service is good also. Had a few cocktails which were tasty also. I will stop by for sure again

Bruce R.

Yelp
The food is okay and the location is nearby, but I would prefer better places to have clams, seafood and fish.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Service is impeccable, food and drinks are divine!! Best seafood in town! Get the lobster roll!!

Russell W.

Yelp
Beware that your actual bill will be 4% higher than the prices on the menu unless you pay in cash. This is not printed anywhere on the menu. You find out -- surprise! -- only when you get the bill.

Yelp
No bueno. Lobster roll, mac and cheese, fried fish sandwich and shell steak. The lobster roll was so bland and only tasted of mayonnaise, and the bun wasn't toasted or warmed, smh. We asked for cheese on the fish sandwich and there was literally one slice of kraft singles cheese on each side of the bread - it was awful. For the prices they charge, real cheese should've been used. Mac and cheese also tasted like Kraft boxed macaroni. And my steaks? Cooked well done when I requested medium. I was honestly taken aback by how bad the food was. My son shared the lobster roll with me and said he felt nauseas afterwards. Ashley was our waitress - she was very pleasant, although definitely won't be back.

Yelp
So much staff but not a lot of great service. Food was slow to come out. The food was tasteless but the lobster and cheese app was a star. Drinks are good. Stomach soured bc the table next to use ordered oysters and there was a small black work inside... luckily she didn't eat it and it was still moving, maybe a little too fresh for my standards as the chef explained that happens often.

Yelp
After the beach one afternoon we came in here for lunch. My shrimp was delicious! Service was good and it's a nice place on the water. My mom was in heaven over her food.
google avatar

Sunny L.

Yelp
Maybe it was just an off night I ordered the fried clams, shrimp, cod and scallop dish Unfortunately the clams were so fried we couldn't even taste them the tiny Thin cod filet was too fishy for my liking and thin it was thinner then a paper plate. Shrimp were fat ones and cooked right The scallops were Perfectly fried that they were still rare in the middle as they should be The lobster bisque was one of the best I've ever had!!!! My first time having some sweet cherry stone clams and liked them
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! Finally a seafood place worth a review! It's been awhile since a spot checked all the boxes: hot, fresh, reasonably priced, annnd the portions are HUGE! I was driving in Long Beach and quite literally stumbled upon this place. Decided to check it out. So glad I did! I got the fried combo. So good hot and fresh! And 1/2 dz. Cherry stones and a cold IPA. Total: $50 give or take for taxes. Wowwww!!! Needless to say Peter's my friend you will see me again!

Yelp
This place is not the same anymore. We've been coming here occasionally, always ordering the Lobster Mac & Cheese and the Surf & Turf. But after our experience today, we're deeply disappointed and won't be returning. They said they ran out of filet mignon for the Surf & Turf and they had to replace it with skirt steak--and still charged the same price ($42). The waitress tried to convince us that skirt steak is 'better' than filet mignon, but it was clearly a lower-quality, cheaper cut of meat. It was tough, too salty, and nothing like what we expected. The lobster was also overcooked, tough and chewy, which was shocking because it used to be more tender. Lobster Mac & Cheese is not the same. The new pasta doesn't work with the dish, and there's noticeably less lobster than before. It feels like there's been a major drop in quality. Whether it's a change in ownership or a different chef, the food and service are no longer worth the price. What used to be a great dining experience has turned into a huge disappointment.

Scott C.

Yelp
Fair at best lobster bisque has a tiny piece of lobster in it and was so buttery. Fried foods were not lightly fried but dripping with oil

Yelp
I went here not too long ago. My boyfriend had been dying to try this place. So we went and were seated outside right away. Love the view, btw. I ordered a Sparkling Berry Lemonade, and it was okay, but kind of strong. Then we ordered the lobster mac & cheese; it was delicious. It was to share, and I almost ate the whole plate myself. That's a must when I go back. I ordered the fried shrimp with fries, and it wasn't bad. Nothing out of the ordinary; it's just shrimp and fries, lol. My boyfriend got the lobster roll, and it was okay. They don't have the warmed lobster roll, so he wasn't too crazy about it. He just preferred it warmed. Our waitress was nice and attentive. We'll definitely be going back.

Belinda F.

Yelp
The food is always fresh and delishes. Eating outside is always great, weather permitting. Indoor eating is also wonderful because you have water views.

Eric T.

Yelp
As a lobster bisque connoisseur, 9/10! Pleasantly surprised it was a white linen eatery. Going into this meal, I thought it was going to be a brown paper table top venue. We went there after shopping all day, so it wasn't 'dinner time' per se, and it wasn't lunch. I state this because for the timing, there was no need to be a rushed service. Our soups came out the same time as the apps. Could/should have been coursed better - and ultimately, could have pushed us for another round of drinks. Before the soups/apps were done, the entrees came out. Again, could have been coursed out better, with a 'fire' button. I could tell the kitchen just started cooking once the item were punched in. Food was good, service was attentive. A more attentive management style should be implemented to slow service down to make the space look more occupied when its slower and in between rushes.

Maria P.

Yelp
perfect lunch date! I had an absolutely delicious seafood salad, hubby had the lobster roll. Both were perfect. Thank you for a great lunch. we will be back!

Yelp
This place is the epitome of after beach eats, if you like seafood. The seafood menu is plentiful and the menu is shellfish based. The baked clams were good, but I'm new to clams so I can't compare to much. I can say they were tasty and not fishy, the stuffing mixture was mashed potato like, which I think is the goal. The service can be interesting, because you can only order certain things from the outside window, which is the first thing point of contact made when walking up to the place. The servers can seem a bit dismissive by telling you, only specific things can be ordered from the outside. A bit more notice would be nice. The outside window sits on the side of Long Beach road, which can be noisy but is on the way for many in coming to and from the beach. It's super casual and convenient, with a parking lot very nearby. If you are dressed casually and still full of sand, this is a nice option, you will not feel out of place. Also, this place is very family friendly

Yelp
Food was good, nice view, good drinks, and outstanding service. All in all a decent meal not overtly expensive and we had a great time

Yelp
I decided to meet an old friend at Peters Clam Bar for lunch. I have dined here many times, before, both in the indoor dining room and the outside deck area. This particular day was sunny and a great day to sit outside and watch boats cruising by. Since the name of the place is Peters Clam Bar we both thought it appropriate to order clams a few different ways. We started off with a dozen cherry stones on the half shell. That was followed by a baskets of fried clam strips. No reason to stop there so we continued with steamers and baked clams and washed that all down with a couple of ice cold taps. Each dish was perfect and the service was attentive and friendly. Plenty of parking available. The indoor dining room is a a step up from outside casual dining and has a different feel along with white tablecloths. Full bar. Good good. Nice menu.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
I miss this place!!! So happy my family got to eat at Peters when we came for a visit. Casual atmosphere (perfect to grab lunch after the beach). Best baked clams! I tried the lobster tacos which were so good. Friendly helpful staff. Can't wait until we can return.

Yelp
Beautiful view of the water. Food was fresh and delicious, service was good even though they we're pretty busy.
google avatar

Alexa P.

Yelp
Pleaaaase put your oysters on ice! They should have been tasty, but instead they were warm which made it gross. The drinks were warm also. Other than that, everything was ok. The king crab legs were delicious.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Nice outdoor space and fast service. Love the view of the water and there's plenty of parking as well. We came for a late lunch and got the crab cake sandwich and linguine with white clam sauce. The crab cake was a disappointment. Way too much breading and practically no clam. I like the tzatziki and cucumber sauce on top. The menu said it sits on top of a salad which I was looking forward to but it was literally 5 small pieces of lettuce. The rest of the plate were fries which was good but not what I was looking for. Cole slaw was decent. The pasta was quite good. Lots of clams and nice flavor. Pasta was cooked Al dente and the portion was just right. Overall a nice space and friendly service. Food seem to be hit or miss but I'll be back to try other seafood items if I'm in the area!
google avatar

Jose T.

Yelp
The cherry stone clams and baked clams were delicious. They were fast getting them to us. They were by the bay and the place was crowded. They sea inspired look was a great touch, and added to the place ambiance.

Jason T.

Yelp
Excellent service, enormous portions, reasonable prices, and good food. The crab boil came with two snow crab clusters and a King crab leg for 42 dollars, that's the best price i've seen on crab in ages. The scampi sauce was worth every calorie. Friend seafood platter was very good, it consisted of shrimp, clams ( killer), scallops, and fish (meh)... i would opt for the clams next time. lobster grilled cheese was amazing, i would personally opt out on bacon on, just bc the lobster really does y need it. skip the fried calamari, somewhat blend and greasy , also helped to go with salad instead of fries, even though they were good, just to avoid oil overload. Salad was super fresh.
google avatar

Barbara T.

Yelp
Stopped by for two takeout seafood dinners on Good Friday. While waiting my husband ordered 6 Cherrystone clams. When we arrived home and looking forward to our dinner together there was no tartar sauce or cocktail sauce. As I frantically searched my cabinets, there was none. I did find an expired bottle of ketchup in the fridge which I couldn't bring myself to open. So, I ate 3 of my dried rubbery shrimp, threw out my cold fries and enjoyed my peanut butter sandwich for dinner! Moral of the story.... If you have to ask for tartar sauce or cocktail sauce in a seafood restaurant, don't go!
google avatar

Jan P.

Yelp
Yuck. Service was ok. Had our reservation which is nice. Made on open table. Wine was blah. Chardonnay and Pinot noir. $14 each for house wine. So over priced. $17 for the Cabernet. That would have been a waste. Garlic bread with thick cheese sauce and lobster. Ok if you're a fatty fat fat. But was yucky. Had to argue to mix a bowl of New England and Manhattan. Oh we can't do that. What would we charge. Please. The manager finally said ok. It's the same amount of soup and for the same damned price. (Face slap). Clam strips were average. Probably frozen. Fries are raw. Stuffed shrimp special was not special and the stuffing was hard (?). Shrimp po boy was ok. Of course too much bread. And the chicken parm was like Stouffers. Was a waste of money.
google avatar

Ming M.

Yelp
The baked clams are out of this world! Even though they are chopped clams instead of whole, they taste better than most baked clams because of the buttery stuffing. Also, the crab bucket is excellent, with big snow crabs and king crab in a buttery sauce and corn on the cob and corn bread. What can be better than that?
google avatar

Steph G.

Yelp
Have been here twice. Each time was pretty consistent. I really liked the lobster garlic bread which was a special- so good. For dinner I had the lobster oreganata- I just did not like the flavor. too much breadcrumbs and did not like the flavor at all. Service is always great and drinks were good. I would come back in the summer and try the lobster roll.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to get fresh seafood! We got the cherry stone clams (12 for $16.59, wow!!!) and they were DELICIOUS. My boyfriend got a lobster roll and I got the fried flounder sandwich and both were really good. The place is right by the water so you get a beautiful view while enjoying yummy food and drinks. Taking off one star because I specifically asked my server if she can substitute french fries for roasted potatoes, and after writing something down on her note (I obviously thought she wrote my request because she repeated it aloud to me), I still got fries on my plates. I didn't even want to go with the back and forth but.. repeating my order and still getting it wrong? Weird. Nonetheless, I recommend. Go for their clams!!

Yelp
We went around 5 pm and it was getting packed. We were quickly seated for outdoor dining. Fresh food with a nice view Got the best seats on the dock. We ordered: -Manhattan Clam Chowder -Lobster Bisque -1/2 dozen oysters -Clam strips with fries -Broiled seafood combo Everything: 10/10 The staff was very accommodating and nice. Definitely coming back for the lobster tacos + lobster Mac & Cheese.

Yelp
Our go to place for oysters and a cold beer. it's still early in the season but my son and I were out doing some things locally and we both thought a dz oysters would go down real nice right about now lol

Yelp
Food was excellent. Everything was fresh. Loved the bucket of steamers. Seemed never ending. Service was great. Atmosphere was wonderful.

Yelp
Our favorite "Go To" place for a casual dining experience of fried clams! And..... the New England Clam Chowder is THE BEST! A Big Thumbs Up!

Yelp
Spilled a drink on me, undercooked filet mignon for my son. Summer staff are kids with no proper experience. Overrated. Much better places around here.

Yelp
I had their baked clams, they were so over cooked,Icould have hap played hand ball with them, we hadn't been there in years. The waitress was very sweet .. The atmosphere was delightful. Will we go back again an emphatic no!!!

Yelp
I have been coming to Peter's for years. There's nothing better than enjoying a cold beer on a hot day, at the outdoor high tables. It's been my go to for the raw bar and I've enjoyed it immensely. I made an unexpected stop here on a rainy Saturday 7/3/2021. It was not a good day for the outdoor seating so I headed indoors. I decided to get a cooked dish in addition to my regular raw clams. There are a variety of dishes, listed on the huge wall menu. Fried shrimp, lobster rolls, calamari, soups. I opted for the salmon sandwich platter. I went to seafood cashier to pay (cash only). I then stepped over to the raw bar to order my clams and a beer. I sat down in the casual dining area at one of the many wooden tables and chairs. I snapped a picture of the rainy dock with the soaked plastic tables and chairs on the outdoor deck. I secretly wished for a sunny day while I was waiting on my food but, somehow the steady rain was soothing. My salmon sandwich looked delicious with its French fries and coleslaw on the side. As I turned over the top bun, I noticed a huge burn mark! Someone had obviously left the bun on the grill too long, it was roasted instead of toasted! Honestly, I was too hungry to complain. I ate around the burnt part. It may have been okay for me that day but, it really is unacceptable. There really is no excuse for that type of error. I expect better for a $15.00 platter. The entire meal set me back over $30.00. I could of done without the salmon platter. I found it to be overpriced and mediocre. There is a seafood restaurant on the other side of the clam bar. I peeked in on the way to the parking lot. White tablecloths covered the empty tables. Based on this visit, I would not dine at the restaurant. I would be afraid the cooked clam bar food would just be transferred to dinner dishes and served a top of those fancy white tablecloths. I'll save my money and continue to get dishes from the raw bar, and maybe two beers instead of one.

Yelp
Had a really enjoyable meal here yesterday. Everything was perfect. The weather for outdoor dining offered us a nice occasional breeze. Boats coming and going with patrons was a sight all In itself. This place was jumping. Fully staffed with obviously trained personnel - they performed their roles to the tee. Our was taken quickly and water served immediately. Then our apps came out. Calm on a half shell. Came with no grit and were easy to chew. Yummy!! My scallops were melt in the mouth delicious. My daughters open face crab burger was huge. Least not - someone knows how to make killer cocktails here. All in all a great day. Big shoutout to our server Andrew, he was also the best. Very attentive and always checking to make sure we were pleased. I look forward to returning.
