Where to Eat and Drink Around DU This Fall (Whether You Are a Student or Not) | Eater Denver

"This family-owned Denver diner has been serving up school spirit and home-cooking on the corner of University Boulevard and Evans Avenue for 50 years. The Denver omelets are some of the best in town." - Gigi Sukin

Google
Denver University area cafe with a Greek slant. The Denver omelet was well cooked and a large portion. The potatoes that came with it were good but could have used a little seasoning. Several other options sounded tempting. Service was fast and friendly. The space itself is divided into two rooms giving a less crowded feeling when full. There was no Wi-Fi available. Parking can be difficult much of the time but was readily available at 7 am on a Sunday.

I cannot reccomend this place enough! I have been coming to Pete's for a couple years now. I really wish everyone had a neighborhood spot of this high quality. The food is always great and the staff are friendly. Today is my birthday and I mentioned that to my waitress, Miriam, who proceeded to bring me one of the best cinnamon rolls I have ever eaten with a little candle and sang Happy Birthday to me with two other servers. After eating my excellently prepared meal I learned my check had been picked up by Dean, their ever friendly and welcoming manager. Rarely have I ever felt so valued and cared for by a local business and I will definitely be coming back for years to come. If you are in South Denver Petes Cafe is not to be missed!

Google
I cannot believe I have never been to this brunch place before. All these years in Denver and I never thought about coming here. I always went to Jelly’s on the other side of campus. And I can say for sure that I love this so much more. It’s my ideal cozy local brunch place with a wide range of options at very reasonable prices. I thought the portions were plentiful and satisfying. There’s ample indoor and outdoor seating. I have already been there twice within two weeks and I definitely plan to come back soon!

Google
This was my first (and last) visit to this Denver landmark. I stopped in for breakfast and ordered their Breakfast Burrito Supreme which was described as coming with 2 eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, sausage, ham and gyro meat. What I got was a tortilla fill with potatoes and very little eggs and meat. The green chile was better than most, but also a stingy portion. I don't like to whine, but I felt like this sad display of breakfast fare qualifies for a warning shot.

Google
I came in here with no expectation. But it became my favorite diner. Great and unique menu! We had Souvlaki Skillet, Breakfast Burrito and Eggs Mazatlan. Everything was great. Big portions, reasonable price and of course nice staff as well. I’m definitely coming back to try other things when I’m in Denver again!

Google
This is an amazing Place ,where they combine ,Greek and American food ,is a most stop if you ever in Denver Colorado

Google
This is my favorite Greek restaurant left in Denver. Simple and delicious. Gyros shaved off the spit, fresh ingredients, and employees that know who you are.

Kevin F

Google
All-around solid, old school Greek dinner with down-to-earth service and a lengthy menu. A part of the great Pete’s family of restaurants, this location is at the heart of the DU community. Will be back again and again.

Yelp
Always consistently good. I ordered the gyros salad. If you really hungry this is great but you'll probably want to share this! It's huge! Service is always quick, lots of choices for breakfast.
google avatar

Jerry A.

Yelp
I ate chicken. It was good and so were the fries, so I have no complaints about that. The service was fast and great and our waitress was nice.

Kolton M.

Yelp
Enjoyable, Simple Diner Experience Didn't love the cheese being a slice of cheese melted on top of my omelette, but overall a great meal.

Jb L.

Yelp
Good, reliable diner. Fast, friendly service--Food meets expectations. Very much a "what you see is what you get" menu. I reserve 5-stars for places that are head-and-shoulders above the competition. But don't let my 4-star rating deter you. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I was lucky enough to attend an event that Pete's Kitchen was the hired caterer. Everything they served was delicious and the Baklava is fabulous. Out of this world. Fantastic experience

Yelp
This is an absolute Gem!!! We have lived here many years, stopped in this morning. Everything was delicious and the staff made me feel like I was in a relatives place. I was lucky that we were seated right below a photo of a very handsome man.. Pete, the man said, my Uncle. I knew it. Pete and his family are serving fine food here. Please stop by. Tell them Cindy sent you.

Dallas B.

Yelp
My visit to petes left my taste buds feeling lukewarm - and not in a good way. The seating arrangements were a chaotic mess, adding to the overall dissatisfaction. To top it off, the food lacked any exciting flavors, making it a forgettable experience and yet not one. A one-star rating is generous for this lackluster dining affair. and DO NOT ORDER THE CHEFS SPECIAL.

Yelp
Service is terrible. Walked in, and waited 5 minutes to a whole team of staff doing nothing. Finally sat myself at a table, and a staff member literally brushed wet crumbs into my lap "cleaning" the table off. The scrambled eggs sucked. I could've made better. The hash browns were chunky. The chicken fried steak was ok. Not returning. Disappointing.

Yelp
We stopped in here for a late breakfast after visiting the South Pearl Street farmers market on a Sunday recently. Charming little place, friendly staff, and really good food that I would give 5 stars if dining establishments were only about the food. But the service that particular day was excruciatingly slow. We had been seated for 15 minutes or so before we were approached with water and menus, and it was another 15 before the lady who owns the joint brought us coffee. After ordering, we waited what seemed an interminable time (maybe 45 minutes?) for our breakfast until I finally asked another server to check on it. Then we noticed a scramble over by the kitchen as the owner-server put in our forgotten order and called for the cooks to hurry it up. I understand mixups in a kitchen on a busy Sunday morning, but several other families took their seats, got their food, ate and left while we sat around twiddling our thumbs. 1 star for the service we received on that particular morning. I'll give this place another try some day. That said, if breakfast turns into a 2.5 hour ordeal again it will be the last time.

Yelp
I'm sorry to have to write this, but it's clear the era of poor employee service and overall lack of give a damn has reduced Pete's, my one time go to for meetings and a good meal, to just another poorly operated, soon to disappear, food establishment. We really don't have to accept crappy service. After having visited hundreds of times over the past 8 years or so, I'm done. Service had declined since COVID, as we have seen at most restaurants, but the final nail in the coffin was this morning when I placed my usual order at 8:15 am and waited in excess of 30 minutes before leaving hungry. To be clear, they weren't busy. I was the only person in the restaurant waiting for food for the first 20 minutes of this time and I could see no one had even looked at the ticket as it sat in the window. When a server asked if I was okay, after having sat their 30 minutes I said no. She asked what I ordered, as if that mattered - essentially blaming me for the delay. I certainly didn't order their chocolate soufflé. She had no desire to understand why I was upset after waiting so long for a basic breakfast. Normally, I'm in and out in 30 minutes- even when they were busy. I wish them luck, but I'm out.

Yelp
Home-y ambiance , nice serving but one star less for the burnt potatoes. Bought the green hot sauce and now I bring it everywhere. Going back to get more !!!

Yelp
Everything here is SO GOOD! The staff is attentive and quick. The breakfast burritos and pancakes are out of this world! We visit every time we're in Denver,

Yelp
I came here on Thanksgiving Day with a fairly large group (8 of us), and was so impressed! My friends have made it a tradition to have Thanksgiving brunch at Pete's every year, and now I see why! First of all, everyone in the restaurant worked so hard to make you feel at home on the holiday. Our server was Sandy and SHE ROCKED. She was super sweet, attentive, and very helpful. Our whole table ordered the thanksgiving plate, which is truly a feast: soup our salad (I had the Navy Bean soup and it was divine!), then the entree which comes with turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls, corn, stuffing, and sweet potatoes... followed up with a slice of pie. All of this for $16. Wowwww! My husband and I each ordered a plate and it fed us for 5 meals... and all of it tasted fantastic! The turkey was so tender and moist it practically melted in your mouth, the gravy was just perfect, the sweet potatoes were perfectly cooked, and the stuffing was probably my fave (it almost always is). All of the pies looked good, but I chose the Pecan, which was a slice of heaven. Beyond the quality of the food, the generous portions, and the totally reasonable price point, everyone at Pete's (extra special shout out to Sandy!) made us feel so welcomed, which a truly wonderful feeling to have... to feel like you belong there and aren't just a Thanksgiving orphan who has been forced to eat at a restaurant that day. I am totally adopting this is a Thanksgiving brunch tradition myself! Go to Pete's! Tell Sandy she's amazing!

Yelp
This is one of the best classic diners in Denver. They have all the classics. Definitely a diner/ grungy feel but isn't that part of the experience the best?! I've come here several time and have always have great, attentive service. The Chef's Special is my go-to: 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, sausage and hash browns. You can switch it up with french toast, biscuits and gravy and all the other meat options but that's my personal favorite. I've never tried the cinnamon bun but judging by the drool in my mouth whenever they pass my table, they are incredible. HUGE portions across the board. Parking is a little tough but that is standard in that University area so expect to street park (small parking lot).
google avatar

Karen A.

Yelp
So many good things to say! The servers are no nonsense, efficient and on top of their skills. Fan favorites are chicken fried steak - must do the mashed potatoes, not the skillet.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
For my first visit, I was pleasantly surprised by the awesomeness of this cozy place. My Tuna Melt with Sweet Potato Fries was delicious. We also enjoyed a tasty cup of coffee and Vegetable Pita Pocket. The best part was the wonderful service from Sandy. We will definitely be back for more in the future.

Yelp
Great food for great prices. Get a full breakfast to a good old diner style burger anytime their open.

Yelp
So if you're looking for an amazing place to eat, take your family it's a lot of everything it's right across the street from the you. Everybody is so warm and welcoming. The food is so good they have the best petes platter ever. if you were looking for an amazing Greek salad or any amazing Greek food this is the place to come to. They have a couple of locations. This one happens to be by my place so I love it. Everything is so fresh and so good the pizza platter can feed about four people, it's great I love going back there I even love taking out orders to go. I've tried a lot of their food but it always somehow go back to that just because it's so good for lunch dinner any time of the day snack the price is right fun to hang out family owned customer service is excellent.!!!$$

Yelp
I love diner food! I can't help it. So I don't know how in the heck I missed this quaint spot on DU's campus. We decided to go there since it was not crowded on that side of town. Upon entering, we were greeted by the staff and shown our table. The atmosphere is subdued to the point where this restaurant is a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of a university campus. Now on to the food. It was absolutely delicious ! It was also plentiful. (You may have to get a to-go box.) Overall this restaurant is an oasis in a place that is teeming with activity.
google avatar

Sonia C.

Yelp
Their breakfast was decent. I loved their green chili. I felt the eggs were a little dry (just cooked a little more than normal)
google avatar

Yelp
My fiancé and I are new to Colorado. Found this place thought it was nice. Had to wait at the door to be seated. Someone came out from the back and just pointed at a booth for us to sit at. Didn't tell us how to look up the menu, nothing. QR code was on the WALL on a tiny piece of paper. We were seated for about 15min and NO ONE approached us to take our orders, offer drinks, NOTHING! Horrible customer service!!! Will not be returning and DO NOT recommend!

Yelp
Darn good iced tea. Strong. Fresh brewed. Refreshing. One can tell a lot about a business by it's iced tea. And biscuits and gravy. Pete's University Park Cafe upholds the high standards of the whole Pete's local franchise. This cafe is located near Denver University, at the corner of Evans and University. It has a wide variety of foods from Greek to breakfast to Mexican to vegetarian so everyone from children to students to older folks can find something deliciously edible. Coffee mugs and hot sauces, like the other Pete's businesses, are available for purchase. Support local businesses. You'll be glad you did.

Yelp
I am a MAJOR fan of this place. Breakfast is my jam and this place serves it all day and they're open until 10pm. I wanted a place to sit quietly to write, enjoy a beer, and corned beef hash and this hit the spot. When I was here it was around 8:30pm and it was practically empty. Service was great and food was cheap. I order corned beef hash with scrambled eggs and a Stella, it's basic but you really can't go wrong. The reason I am ranking it as a 4 star is because the hash was not very crispy, which reflects under cooked meat. Since it's red meat it's nothing to be alarmed of but due to my personal preferences- it wasn't the best I've had. However, this place shouldn't be judged on it's quality of food and more so it's casual atmosphere, cost, and convenience. To any of my poor college friend in the DU area looking for a hefty plate of food, I would recommend this place.
google avatar

Tiffany P.

Yelp
Great service, I had the farmers skillet and it was so fulfilling. My son and husband had the N.Y. Strip & eggs that was delicious and the steak was huge! Love it we will be back soon!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
It's a diner. A good old fashioned, get close to your neighbor, diner. Come in at any time and the tv is on and you can hear the spatula clinging in the kitchen. You're also guaranteed to get alright service and way more food than expected. On my first go round I got a Greek omelet with gyro and pita and potatoes and coffee and it was all amazing. Way too much food; probably could have fed me 3 times. Anyway. It's cozy and close and I love it here. They've got it all. Also, for those new to Denver: anything "Pete's" is Greek and you can find phenomenal gyro and pita with tiziki or anything Greek of your dreams there.
google avatar

Jesena M.

Yelp
Great greek diner, no frills & pretty basic, but good food at low prices. We had the gyros and a greek salad, everything was delicious and well made. The zatziki was yummy and the pita bread was awesome too.
google avatar

Erika L.

Yelp
When people tell me to go to my happy place, Pete's is it! I'm an east coast girl so I love a diner atmosphere. I like a menu that has tons of true variety and options but not so many that you can't see straight. Breakfast all day is just awesome because sometimes I want a skillet for dinner! I've been going here for years and the staff turnover is minimal, if there's been any at all. Oh, and let's not forget that the food is delicious, fresh, and consistent. I don't think I've ever sent anything back!! The only thing I wish is that they'd have their delicious chicken lemon soup every day!!
google avatar

Yelp
What's not to like about Pete's? Good diner food. Emphasis on Greek, which seems common among many Mom and Pop type diners. Comfortable interior - not fancy (isn't a "fancy" diner an oxymoron, anyway?) but not divey either - clean and in good repair. Pleasant, attentive service. Very reasonable prices. Accommodating hours (6:00 am to 11:00 pm 7 days/week). Good accessibility, although Evans and University can get pretty congested. A fair amount of parking (shared with Mustard's Last Stand) immediately to the north. I recommend something with gyros - lots of choices - Pete's gyros is served more in thicker chunks than slices, is moister that way and is seasoned deliciously. I like the nostalgia of diners. Most of them are fun and fine - solidly average 3-stars. Probably none will ever attain a 5-star status - just not who they are. Pete's is a solid 4-stars - just a tick better than average pretty much across the board.
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
I loved this place. It had all the charm and no frills that I wanted! The best damn Greek food I've had in a long time. The best tzatiIki sauce and dolmades I've had in Colorado!!! The Greek chef is one of Denver's best kept secrets! I don't make it d own this way often (a little allergic to the DU crowd), but with decent wine and damn good food, I'll make this a regular stop on my "treat yo' self" spots.
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
Decent Greek American food. Pete's Grecian Pladder was too much even for 4 of us so we boxed up meat in one box and salad in another. It's a big pile of salad (mostly icebrrg lettuce) topped with tomato, onions and cucomber slices, greek olives, Greek pickled peppers, big hunks of feta, a lot of gyro meat, cubes of souvlaki meat, chicken pieces, stuffed grape leaves all topped with some greek dressing. Everthing is well cooked and tasty with tzatziki sauce on the side and pita bread (order extra). Really a crave worthy dish. They have sandwiches and other Greek and American food but get Pete's Plate and you will be happy. Prices are reasonable. Decor is clean and plain, service is fine when it is mot too busy. It is worth a visit.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
This place deserves zero stars. We have been frequent customers of other Pete's locations but only went to this one once (and never again). First, the 2 servers spent their time chatting with each other instead of taking care of the fewl customers. Second, the 3 of us all had one of the worst breakfasts ever. The food was undercooked and gross. Visualize limp half frozen hash browns and rock hard scrambled eggs. Of course, we couldn't complain because the servers never checked on us. We mentioned all this to the cashier, and she wished us a better experience next time! That will never happen. Avoid this Pete's at all costs! Dennys would have been better.
google avatar

Jd-a M.

Yelp
Worth it. Think Denny's but with better service and very convenient location (riiiiiiight beside the university).
google avatar

Lizi C.

Yelp
I absolutely love petes although the only thing I have ever order is there Greek salad with gyro. This is hands down the best Greek salad I've been able to find. Service is usually efficient and fast. They have a good kids menu. This is a staple for us.

Cole B.

Yelp
I come to Pete's quite a lot whether it be with my co workers from fat shack or just alone, usually during the very open hours of 6 to 630am. I get the chefs special in the morning and usually the California cheeseburger in the afternoon or night, I however did not see the sweet potato fries at the top of the page and wow glad I found them, best sweet potato fries I've had in a long time
google avatar

Alan N.

Yelp
Little hole in the wall type of place. Very typical breakfast items. We did not have to wait long to be seated and our food came out good. The place was busy but it wasn't crowded so they were moving people in and out quickly. We just split the classic, just your normal breakfast. Pretty large portions though so that was great. If it's one thing I would recommend is to maybe do a big wash of the place because it is generally sticky, the seats, floors, tables, etc. I'm sure it's from syrup and things but a wipe down with a clean rag wouldn't hurt too much. The place kind of smelled like old standing water. Other than that, good food! Try this place out.
google avatar

Kristina O.

Yelp
First time here after a recommendation from a friend. The place is in a college town so obviously you will have a college student as your waitress. Ours seemed like she was really rushing us to take our order and never really took the time to check on us but had plenty of time to chat it up with her coworkers. The drinks seemed a little sketchy as you cant get any refills or you have to pay for a whole one. The food was okay literally stuff that no one could screw up on. Overall it was a decent experience but I wouldn't go back.
google avatar

Willy N.

Yelp
I have never been disappointed here. The portions are huge and the people are always friendly. When relatives visit, this is where I take them and they always love it. It is usually quiet in the evenings. Lots of variety on the menu, but dont pass on the lamb gyros.
google avatar

Charles S.

Yelp
About the best of Pete Contos's restaurants. Priced a little better than the rest. (Prolly because it's near a college) Same quality food as his other restaurants, but a cleaner place. Gyro omelette was good, could have used a little more meat. That's Pete you know, slide by as cheap as you can and charge as much as you can. He blames taxes and government for that, but in reality it's him.
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
This place is a straight hidden breakfast gem. The foods cheap for the amount you get and I finished each last bit of it.
google avatar

Hubert H.

Yelp
"We would like a booth" "Then you'll have to wait 5 minutes" (We sit.) "Hold on, let us wipe it up first" Probably not the most enlightened exchange between patron and wait staff, but hey it's a diner what do you expect? Basic breakfast place, and really packed on Sundays with university types, students and professors, possibly some locals. The cheeseburger took a bit longer than the other dishes ordered by colleagues (I can't remember the names at the moment), but hey it's a diner, what do you expect? The kind of place I felt like being interviewed by NPR about "my greatest concerns." Sorry about all the irony. Really, it's a nice decent morning grill.
google avatar

Yelp
After sipping on bloody mary's & mimosas during the boyfriends hockey game [he plays in an adult league at DU!] and witnessing a win [yay!] the fellow wives/girlfriends and teammates decided going to brunch would be a great way to celebrate an 8am win....and they were right! Although small, the interior is quite spacious and fit our table of 10 comfortably in the back. Water, coffee and juice arrived quickly before deciding on our yummy breakfast dishes. I chose the Greek Veggie Omlette, which was loaded with greek olives, feta cheese, green peppers and onions, topped with an over easy egg [perfect for soaking up the hash browns!] with a pita on the side. WOW! words can no describe how good it was :) Service? Not bad at all :) quick, friendly and they even allowed us to catch the start of the Blackhawks game with a request to change the channel! Staff is very helpful in suggesting food and always had a smile on their faces! Prices? Cheap. Affordable. Great :) Atmosphere? Very college chic and homey. The company? even better :)
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
The food here is pretty amazing. I ordered the chicken gyro and the chicken was incredibly tender and flavorful. The service is O.K. The waitress who served us was not happy to be there.
google avatar

Sarah O.

Yelp
I ate here for the first time a week ago and though I'm a huge Pete's fan, the quality at this one just isn't quite what the other restaurants have. The gyro was more flavorful than Pete's Kitchen or Greek but the other items were not up to the standard of the others. Still would go back though because all Pete's are amazing!!!
google avatar

Steve G.

Yelp
Met up with a friend who works nearby and he recommended Pete's. We were early on a Tuesday so the place was not too busy. Our waitress was sweet and got us situated with coffee and water and put in our order. I went with their signature "Greek Skillet", IT WAS AWESOME! Plenty of everything: potatoes, feta, meat, onions and tomatoes. It gave me a solid meal for a day of adventure in Colorado. I don't know when I will be back but I now have a "go to" place in Denver.

Susan L.

Yelp
Went for dinner and had the Greek Style Combination Plate with chicken kabob and gyros. Both were very dry and very little taste. The amount of food on the Plate was very large, however. In the future, I'll head for the Jerusalem Restaurant which is only a few blocks away.
google avatar

Mark O.

Yelp
I really, really, want to like this place. The service is always courteous and prompt. However, the food is inconsistent at best. I've dined in and I've carried out. Twice, the gyros have been cooked to perfection--tender and soft. Two other times, the gyros have been burnt, overcooked, and taste as if they've been under a warmer for a long time. The staff is good at fulfilling special requests--they've never gotten an order wrong. But the inconsistency is puzzling--you shouldn't have to guess which cook is in the kitchen which day.
google avatar

KC N.

Yelp
Perfect little local diner. No highfalutin food. Just classic breakfast fare plus some Greek additions. Delish. I always get the gyros and eggs. The corn beef hash is delish. Try their house hot sauces. And the coffee is perfect. I could drink a whole pot. Again perfect diner food.

Bailey H.

Yelp
Great service, something on the menu for everyone, and really affordable. The huevos rancheros are really good!
google avatar

Jay F.

Yelp
Decent cheap food. Good burgers. Nothing fancy which is why I'm only giving 3 stars. But clean and pretty quick service.
google avatar

Jonathan K.

Yelp
Pete's Grecian Platter is my favorite thing. I have had it several times, never disappoints. Service is always great, friendly folks. I like the "old-fashioned" sort of ambiance. The only negative experience I had there was with a breakfast platter of some sort - it was pretty bland. However, it may have been a "Denver Omelette" type deal, in which case that was my fault for ordering it. Not sure who actually likes that combination of ingredients.
