The Best French Restaurants in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"With numerous locations across town, stepping into Petite Provence feels like stepping directly into a boulangerie on the streets of Nice. Wicker chairs adorn the tiled floors, and pastries line the shelves and countertops, shining with sugary glazes and topped with chocolates, creams, or ripe berries. A brunch destination for Portland urbanites, diners pile into Le Petit Provence’s bistro for decadently dressed Benedicts and French cafe classics like Monte Cristos and French onion soup; however, the surrounding Portland metro locations (Lake Oswego and Beaverton) also offer elevated dinner plates that showcase French cooking at its finest. The Salmon au Raifort features a seared salmon over a parsnip puree, while the bouillabaisse soup highlights Pacific Northwestern seafood." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Where to Find the Best French Onion Soup in Portland | Eater Portland

"Local French bakery chainlet, Petite Provence, is more than just flaky croissants and crusty baguettes — it’s also a convincing boulangerie, complete with wicker chairs and rustic country charm. The restaurant serves a breakfast and lunch menu of soups, sandwiches, and Benedicts, with dinner service at select spots. All locations serve the French onion soup, though, prepared classically with beef consomme and sweet, browned onions, topped with a toasted round of Provence bread and Parmesan and Swiss cheeses. It’s available by the cup or bowl."

This place is super adorable. I love how aesthetic it is on the inside. Cozy seats as well. I got the Salmon Hash, very tasty and lots of salmon in it!! I thought the dill dressing was just a bit overpowering but I think that’s a personal preference. My partner got the quinoa cakes, both dishes came w a choice of butter croissant or toast. We did one of each. Both came w a fresh strawberry jam that was very tarte!! Which I loved, I don’t like a very sweet jam and this was perfect!! I ate all my toast (which I never do). All of this was pretty reasonably priced as well, but maybe I just think that’s bc I’ve been use to SoCal pricing for a while hahaha. The only quarrel I had was w our servers lack of attentiveness. Not so much w us, but as the restaurant got a table about every 10 or so minutes it was taking longer and longer to get waters to the table to the point that the table next to us complained. It was only about 5 nicely timed out tables so that was strange. Anywho, very nice, would come back and try something new!

Google
This is a beautiful French restaurant with wonderful food, delicious pastries, and a great ambiance. I loved the menu and my server was very friendly, helpful, and pleasant. Some of the staff was slightly less friendly than I've become adjusting to in Oregon. This is a great place and definitely worth a try.

We were happy to find this place after being told to wait for 20 mins in another breakfast place. The food was so delicious, i love the plating, and the service was enjoyable too.

Google
They changed the menu, so a lot of what you see online isn’t available anymore. However, there are still some great options. I had the ultimate polenta cakes and everything was above my expectations. I especially liked the squash as a side. They give you a lot of food, and I wasn’t able to finish it all.

Google
Salmon Hash and a warm croissant with fresh jam is served with every brunch plate. Exceeded expectations in every way and amazing service from our waitress! Thank you for your patience with our large party! ♥️

Google
We cannot say enough, good things about petit provence!! Our waitress Patricia was amazing today, she is super genuine & provided us excellent service. We always get the Albacore Tuna Melt & Monte Cristo Sandwiches and they are always tasty w/ high quality ingredients & cooked with love that you can taste.

Yummy French cuisine and baked goods! The staff was also super helpful and friendly.

My family choose this restaurant at Father’s Day lunch. They’re so kind and generous. I love croissants so much. Pastry is an amazing good. My boys ordered a BLT, my daughter ordered west coast Benedict, my youngest daughter ordered a chicken pasta(kids meal:9bucks) my husband and I ordered a steak and eggs. Foods are so good and delicious. Facility is clean and neat.

Yelp
Good food at reasonable prices. However, service is spotty with servers who can either be overwhelmed or absent minded. For example I had to wait 15 minutes to get a coffee after ordering it before even ordering my meal

Yelp
What a great experience! The perfect spot to meet friends for brunch. I'll start off by saying people in Portland are just so much nicer than California. By the end of this trip it made me want to move here (it's summer ) our waiter was great and gave us GREAT suggestions. So I actually highly recommend asking if you are between two menu items. (I never usually trust the waiter but here you can!) It's such a cute spot and we sat outdoors it was such a lovely day. Here's what we ordered: - Seasonal peach pancakes (so good fresh peaches and mascarpone it wasn't overly sweet) - whipped feta and avocado tartine (cheesy goodness) - two of the risotto cakes one with eggs and one with avocado sub (highly recommend cause it's different! these were so good nice and crunchy on the outside!) -eggs benny I think we recommend the hot coffees because we didn't really like the iced ones we got. Those of us who ordered the hot ones liked them. Matcha was a presweetened powder we DO NOT recommend! Croissants for the table which was such a nice touch and great to munch on while we wait. Jam and butter yum! Very delightful experience with friends... will be back for that mimosa flight

Yelp
An Unappetizing Surprise in My Sister's Hash Browns A HARDWARE NAIL/SCREW IN HER FOOD. I wish I could say my visit to Petite Provence Boulangerie & Patisserie was enjoyable, but unfortunately, it turned into a nightmare. Everything seemed fine at first-the ambiance was cozy, and the service was decent. But then, as my sister was digging into her hash browns, to her horror, she found a NAIL embedded in her food. Yes, a literal nail/screw. The shock and disgust we all felt at that moment are beyond words. How does something like this even happen in a kitchen that's supposed to be serving safe, edible food? This isn't just unacceptable; it's dangerous and negligent! See pictures. I brought it to the staff's attention immediately, and while they apologized, it didn't change the fact that everyone's meal was ruined - along with our trust in this establishment. We walked out feeling nauseous and angry that such a careless mistake could occur. This experience was not only awful but also deeply concerning. Needless to say, we won't be returning, and I caution others to think twice before dining here.

Yelp
We ordered the risotto cakes and peach pancakes and both were so good! The risotto cakes came with a croissant and the server was so nice and let me try a baguette as well! I'd definitely order the CROISSANT! It came with the most delicious raspberry jam! We sat outside and it was really enjoyable. SKIP the green tea latte. It's DISGUSTING. Worst I've ever had. It's SO SWEET and just wasn't drinkable. It's an instant mix instead of being legit matcha so it didn't taste like tea. It just tasted like sugar milk. The service was SO GOOD that I'd give this place 5 stars but it was the beverage that threw me off.

Yelp
Was super excited to try out this place for brunch! They have an extensive menu and serve breakfast and lunch all day. I ordered the corned beef hash and the banana French toast to share. The corned beef hash was super yummy, and a very large portion. The French toast was a little too soggy for me, so I would skip on that. Also they give you a free croissant with your meal + jam. Their croissant is so so good, baked fresh, and pairs perfectly with their homemade jam. I feel like if you wanted something sweet to pair with your breakfast, this is the perfect addition. Overall service was really quick and nice for our group of 8. I would definitely come back here! It's got a cute ambiance with indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
This was one of the first restaurants I tried when I moved to the area over 10 yrs ago. I love that the baked goods are still just as delicious and the beauty of this location still shines. Early on a weekday there is plenty of parking and seating. The service was appropriate, we did not feel rushed or ignored. The menu is their classic menu and I finally tried the Polenta and eggs. Poached eggs are not my favorite and I felt for me they needed a little more time to cook. To someone else they would be perfect. The polenta and vegetables were delicious and when I reheated my extras the eggs cooked to more my liking. Of course we had some pastries and my companions reported the savory croissants were delicious. My plain croissant was delicious as well and filling since I was taking more of my main meal home. A great location to meet with friends, bring out of town guests, or become a regular for your daily meals!

Yelp
Service is awesome, friendly and responsible. but unfortunately things I ordered I didn't enjoy. Had the bowl of French onion soup, savory crepe with a side croissant. The soup tasted kind of funky, not sure if they used different spices but not what I expected, didn't like it at all. The savory crepe was a bit starchy for me, didn't enjoy it either. But partner enjoyed the corn beef hash brown, so it's good.

Yelp
Anytime we have visiting family or I want the best croissant and raspberry jam ever this is the place we go. The service is as impeccable as the food and what keeps us coming back.I always leave there with a jar of their in house made raspberry jam and a dessert, pastry or croissant. I highly recommend this place to anyone local or visiting all menu items delicious. It's always busy but the atmosphere is buzzing and the it's worth the wait. Alberta area has so many unique shops, art galleries and restaurants. They're are also more locations in and around Portland.

Yelp
Perfect place to start your day in Portland! Everything was spectacular from the moment we stepped in. Service was spectacular, the guy who greeted us and the guy who served our table were great, friendly and professional. I got Tuna melt on croissant and it was delicious, my salted caramel latte was amazing! Very cute interior, pretty popular location I would say. Must try their croissant with a house made jam. I took some macaroons to go and I'm yet to try them, but they look delicious

Yelp
I've heard so much about the cancel culture. I was raised in the consequence culture. I believe the cancel culture has evolved from people that do not like consequences and want to blame others. I spend money in stores where I'm welcomed. My wife walked into the restaurant while I finished a phone call outside. I went in after to join her and admire the lovely desserts in the case. We waited while the gentlemen in front of us finished his order and was shocked when the sales guy looked at us and walked away. Not only did he leave he grabbed his stuff and went behind the employees only area. There we stood for another 3 to 5 minutes. There were at least 5 people working in the area and not one checked to see if we needed any attention. I finally waved some attention to us and asked for a manager. Funny thing, after I asked for the manager, the waitress/customer service lady asked if we would like to be seated. At this point no thank you. Just the manager please. I informed the manager of the service level and my disappointment of the staff's lack of professionalism with helping every customer no matter of race. I learned in the 1970's to spend my money only where I receive service and respect. I refused to purchase at this point. Too bad, everything looked so tasty.

Yelp
Stopped by for a sandwich and coffee. I expected the baguette to be better quality since they had fresh baked goods. But the sandwich and side salad were good (minus the bread). Server was very nice and helpful. I enjoyed the outdoor seating.

Yelp
It was my first time visiting this delicious place. I came to visit my brother for a few days and he selected this place to have brunch. The service was very excellent. Our waiter was very nice, welcoming, and helpful. I wish I remembered his name to give him a proper shout out. The ambiance inside and outside was very nice. I liked that they had heating lamps at every table. Portland is freezing during this time, so the green tea latte kept me warm. Also, I recommend the chorizo con huevo(look for a chorizo item on the menu). The croissant was so good, soft, and the jam was icing on the "cake."

Matt M.

Yelp
We managed a bar seat during a busy Saturday AM and were very pleasantly surprised by creative, well-executed food and drinks and solid service. We had the Eggs Benedict and the Biscuits and Gravy. Both were excellent. The Bloody Mary was perfect and the mimosa flight (yes, you heard me, mimosa flight) was exactly what the Wife needed. Add a few croissants to go from the patisserie and you have the perfect weekend morning.

Yelp
This was a very cute brunch spot. In fact, we had originally planned to come to this part of town for a different restaurant and ended up choosing this place instead! They got us seated promptly even at peak brunch hours. And then fed us some delicious food. The croissants are seriously the size of your head! Served with a nice raspberry jam. I highly recommend
google avatar

Roma M.

Yelp
Adorable and delicious. Also the service was really good. We ordered brunch and it was exactly what we needed. We started with a Bloody Mary (spicy and perfect) and a Raspberry Mimosa as well as a Croissant served with their homemade raspberry preserves. Excellent and the croissant was as big as my head. Our entrees were a chèvre and mushroom omelet and the poached eggs with chili crisp. Both were excellent!

Yelp
The service is very quick and easy. The desserts are delicious and well made. This is my go to spot for sweets. I love the atmosphere and it's very welcoming. Nice location in a friendly neighborhood. The napoleon is my absolute favorite item off the menu. They have a something for everyone.
google avatar

Bob S.

Yelp
Great French onion soup. Excellent breads and pastries. The ambiance is as close to a true French cafe as you'll find in Portland. Occasional live music as well. C'est juste comme il faut.
google avatar

Tiamo M.

Yelp
Amazing food, I got the bowl of French onion soup- it's BIG, basically an entre on its own, and immaculate. I also got the monte cristo which was also amazing. Service was amazing as well, had a lovely server who completed the experience. Overall I would recommend this place for the generous portions, excellent lunch, and to top it off amazing pastries. 10/10!!

Yelp
I have never in my life eaten at a restaurant where both me and those I have eaten with had foreign objects in my food. I use to come here for my birthdays and when I was pregnant. They don't have a at-a-glance section for those who are vegan or plant based. I ordered two sides, but instead looked like potatoes with a vegan chorizo garnish on top. Took one bite and noticed first one, then three fibers. I ordered tea and both The original tea cup and replacement had stains. 1st one coffee stains inside that I could rub off with a napkin. The second one had pink lipstick stains on the outside of the cup so I finished my water then used the glass to pour the tea in. I only had a couple of sips. I was completely grossed out. I don't own a dog and I did not wear any lipstick or makeup. I won't come back. I have not been there in almost six years. I have been plant based for 4 years. The person I was with had almost finished Her omelette when some of the meat turned out to be a combination of two half inch pieces of plastic. Oh and her croissant was hard as if it had been reheated. Now clearly they were under staffed. I feel like perhaps even understocked and unprepared for the brunch rush today. It's almost as if we were fed from the trash and from what people didn't eat. I tried not to think too hard lol. We did tip the waiter to be nice. It wasn't his fault. We didn't have to pay for that meals, so that's fine. The person I was in a meeting with has a masters in Public Health and happens to work for while I have a wellness business, so yes we care about clean quality food. I was still hungry so I went ahead and went to Ben & Esther's who have not failed me yet.

Yelp
Sorry but first time visiting but unfortunately after 15 minutes of being ignored by several staff over the counter, waitress or waiters and a few more staff....I left. Weird but coffee counter ignored me, pastry counter as well but blew my mind when other staff walking through me and or around me ignored me to? Sorry but service is unfortunately 1 star! Okay enough of the negativity.....I was delighted and floored after having ordered food and delivered!! (Another location) Food was 4 stars if not more!!! The omelette was soooo good!! Hash Browns was soooo good to but the Croissant with in house made jam plus Brie was Redunkulous!! I'm definitely going to try again at a location? Can't imagine how much more amazing if served hot and fresh? Hopefully service will be slightly more accommodating? But definitely recommend food to go or delivery!! Yummy deliciousness

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Lovely spot for lunch today! The outdoor seating area was really pleasant. The Monte Cristo sandwich was made perfectly! Would get this again and again if I lived here!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute place with pastries that please the eyes as much the taste buds. Portions are HUGE. Would recommend sharing with a friend.

Yelp
This is an absolutely stunning cafe with plenty of seating. It's a perfect place for brunch with friends. Most of their tables are sized for a party of four or less. The menu has plenty of cocktails, coffees, pastries, brunches, all of which are delicious. The service here is so professional and thoughtful. Our waiter, Adam, was incredibly attentive and offered a complimentary croissant for some friends who hadn't been here before. I recommend their chai and also their fruit tarts.

Cassidy D.

Yelp
The server we had was very personable and made sure we enjoyed everything. The food was savory and everyone left feeling full. Reviewed the menu more and was pleasantly surprised at their flexibility to make things vegetarian. Their lattes are excellent, as well. I can definitely see why this is a favorite destination.
google avatar

Rob O.

Yelp
This is fairly close to the air bnb we are staying at. Place is full and busy so expect a a little delay getting your meal. Our server was personable and friendly. We started off with a couple medium dark roasts with espresso shots. The coffee was flavorful and strong.... Not wimpy. Ordered the house eggs Benedict with potatoes and squash. Came with tasty sliced grilled ham and a croissant. Everything was delicious.
google avatar

Sean R.

Yelp
Not much of a brunch person I'll admit but I like this place for the bakery and sweets. I have tried brunch here before and liked it. Mostly just your regular brunch fare but they did have these Risotto Cakes that were like potato pancakes (think latkes) which was a bit different and quite hearty. Fair prices and they definitely don't skimp on portion sizes here.
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
A tiny bit of France right here in Portland, Oregon! Come early, because there will be a wait! We waited about 20 minutes for our walk-in brunch. While we waited, we took a peek at the bakery nestled within the restaurant. There is a wide assortment of macarons, pastries, and cakes. You can also order them while you dine in the restaurant. I ordered the West Coast eggs Benedict which comes with grilled salmon, avocado, poached eggs, and a dill hollandaise sauce. It also comes with a side of either hash browns, potatoes, or fresh fruit. We also ordered the polenta which came with bacon, Parmesan and cheddar cheeses, mushrooms, and poached eggs. We were very full by the time we finished both dishes. The polenta was soo creamy with the cheeses, and the salmon in the eggs Benedict was cooked very tenderly. There is only street parking, but we found some on the street pretty quickly on a Saturday morning.

Yelp
Delicious pastries and breakfast items ! Love their coffee and also they're croissants. Great place to meet friends and have a comfort filled breakfast !
google avatar

Brooke A.

Yelp
I've been many times and this place is always solid. They're not being some fusion, overly hipster thing. They know who they are. They do breaky/brunch and they do it well. Services is usually good and quicker than it seems like it will be. It's always pretty crowded and I think that speaks volumes. My only complaint- they took shakshuka off the menu. It was fantastic!
google avatar

Ezra H.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible food here. I cannot stop myself from recommending this place to anyone in town for a brunch option, and then ordering the Benedict on their homemade croissants. Gah. My only wish is for them to have cold brew as an option for drinks. Otherwise I have no notes. Service is always wonderful too.
google avatar

Kenneth Z.

Yelp
They have the best pastries in town, they are as good as anything I had in Paris. They have a ham and Swiss cheese and béchamel croissant that I add their jam too that is simply amazing.
google avatar

Martin W.

Yelp
Absolutely recommend this location. It transports you to an European cafe house with all the vibes and the food (sure drinks as well). Service was quick and I had one pavlova raspberry to be precise. That was a delicious master piece! If you like good pastry that first ingredients is not sugar and tasty give petite Provence a try!
google avatar

Candace M.

Yelp
Great treats, drinks, service, and atmosphere! We sat at the bar and had the best service ever! I had the mimosa flight that came in four different flavors it was divine! The delicious treats are amazing, we took home the macaroons and tart and they did not disappoint. This is the place to go for afternoon drinks and sweet succulent treats, I'll be back every time I visit Portland.
google avatar

Alyson C.

Yelp
Cutest spot to dine in one of best neighborhoods to explore in Portland. Covered outdoor dining perfect rain or shine! Loved dining here and will return. Staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, and food was delicious! Highly recommend getting a couple of items from the bakery as sides or to go. We opted for the apple turnover and croissant with jam. Everything is perfectly flaky, not dry, and flavorful. Saw the fresh juice pairings listed and had to try a couple - Envy and Sunset. Both great if you're looking for fresh made healthy juices for an energy boost. The Strawberry Cheesecake pancakes were perfect to split - heavier and sweet.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Delicious food and attentive staff. The baked eggs were piping hot and smothered in cheese!
google avatar

Yelp
Love their raspberry jam and everything else too. Food was yummy. Staff were friendly. Will come back.

Yelp
My friends and I were looking for a brunch spot that didn't have a wait on a Sunday around noon. We were so hungry, but luckily we were seated quickly, and the food took about 15 minutes to arrive. I had the baked eggs, and it was sooo delicious!! It came piping hot and was a cheesy flavor bomb. The crackers it came with were a bit hard though. My bf had the Monte cristo, and this was great as well! We enjoyed our meal, but it was definitely on the heavier/greasier side.

Cheryl D.

Yelp
Very nice bakery, lovely waitstaff. The food was wonderful, I had the French toast, expensive....but well worth it.
google avatar

Sara A.

Yelp
This is a great French bistro with multiple locations in the city. Its cute inside, offers indoor and outdoor seating and can get extremely busy on the weekends, so plan accordingly. Service is ok, just straight to the point, and pretty quick. I love the option of getting a croissant as part of your breakfast. Definitely try them with their homemade raspberry jam, it's delicious! The food is good, you'll get large portions, and many options to choose from. The 4-star rating is due to the quality of food being more Americanized, it's good, but do prepare. Pro Tip: If lines are long, walk right up to the pastry counter inside for some pastries and coffee to go. Also, grab a jar of their house made raspberry jam.
google avatar

Margaret C.

Yelp
I've been there only once and while I know that it's a very popular place I've never been there before. We got a take out and everything we tried was delicious but to be honest it felt like it was mass produced and I didn't feel like it was as unique as other bakeries. I might go back and try again when I'm in the area, maybe I'll change my mind :)
google avatar

Rekz K.

Yelp
A friend recommended. Wow. Wonderful service and food. Hit my food spot. I had Salmon Hash, wife had Salmon Salad, both were excellent. Definite recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best bakeries in the city and their food is also amazing - you don't want to miss visiting this eatery if your in the city
google avatar

Tricia S.

Yelp
Yum! Came in for a weekday breakfast with the hubby and enjoyed it - this was our first dine in experience since COVID so I was a little ... there was enough space between the next group as to not feel uncomfortable. I can't even remember what I ate only that it was delicious! Omelet, French toast, maybe a Benedict ... dessert was great too. Came with fresh fruit which paired nicely with the rich, decadent meal.
google avatar

Yelp
I was on Alberta Street, hoping the art co-op across the street would open during their posted business hours. (Spoiler alert: they did not, and a featured artist lost out on me purchasing their item.) I decided to wait here for an hour or so and hope the gallery would open. I saw the most amazing cheese danish in the case, so I ordered that and a mimosa. It was amazing. The pastry was perfect, the cream cheese filling was to die for, and I devoured it almost instantly. To my great shame, I asked for another one, this time with cherry. Again, it was divine. I felt sick afterwards, because I ate two incredibly rich and buttery danishes, but it was totally worth it. I would definitely eat a full meal here in the future. The downside is that my partner is Celiac and can't eat gluten or have any risk of contamination with it, and as this is largely a bakery, there's too much risk for her to eat here. That makes this a solo affair for me. That being said, the pastry alone is enough for me to dash in and grab one to go.

Fran B.

Yelp
It's the best place around for a Sunday brunch or every day brunch. Wonderful menu. Great service. Sit outside on a warm morning. Terrific lunch options too.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
This store has great marketing and street charm. Many seating options inside and out. The display has two faces. One side is more brunch pastries and to the right the colorful petite desserts. I had the chocolate mousse cake with a marshmallow filling. Tasty but texture was overly soft. Even the ganache had a strange rubbery quality. I am saving one of their fruit danishes for tomorrow breakfast. Emily was helpful in describing the wide selection.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food and great ambiance. Great attentive service. Love it! It's a little neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Yelp
A unique space to have breakfast or brunch, Friendly service, may have to wait in line depending on time. Outdoor and indoor seating, can be busy ambiance. Must try their house-made jelly. Delicious croissant and other pastries available.

Yelp
This place was worth the stop, they had a great variety of pastries, coffee, breakfast , and lunch items. We had breakfast there, the wait was 5/10 minutes ( it was packed) we were a table of 4, as we got seated there was many locals coming in and out, this place was popular, great food , decent service, the reason for 4 stars was, 1 of the meals did not come as stated in the menu, so we asked for the bread ( wasn't delivered with meal) they finally brought it, also they offered salsa we said " yes" they never brought it, then another lady came by we asked again, she said " yes" she'll bring out the salsa but by that time she brought it out, all of us were almost done with our meals. But the food was very good. Chorizo has scramble- ok La Provence Benedict- Great Baked eggs a la francaise- Great Mushrooms spinach polenta- Great
