Pegu Club Cocktail Lounge in NYC Closes Permanently After Nearly 15 Years | Eater NY

"I opened Pegu Club in 2005 after training with Dale DeGroff, and it grew into one of New York’s earliest craft-cocktail destinations and a must-visit in Soho: a large, low-lit, wood‑laden second‑story space on Houston with speakeasy vibes, well-worn bamboo floors, gilded lighting and a little brass dragon business‑card holder at the entrance. We helped spawn the cocktail renaissance—championing fresh‑squeezed juices, in‑house syrups, complex cocktails (often with cheeky names and high price tags) and sophisticated small bites—and many Pegu alumni went on to open acclaimed bars such as PDT and Bar Goto. Faced with an expiring lease on October 31, chronic plumbing that has plagued the space since day one, the prospect of an unaffordable rent increase, and a COVID-19 shutdown that “took every bit of life” out of the business—summer service is historically “slow as molasses,” social‑distancing limits would have capped capacity at 50%, and PPP constraints meant we couldn’t sustainably bring back staff—I made the decision to close permanently after nearly 15 years and am unlikely to try to replicate Pegu elsewhere because its quirky location and accumulated details gave it a sense of place that couldn’t be moved." - Serena Dai

Google
Attended a Birthday party here and also an office Holiday party. The food and drink is great. The staff are really good and it’s such a good space with great views of the City.

One can always count on the staff at this place. Service was above and beyond. Excellent food and great time from the moment our valet greeted us.

Took my secretary here, she loved it I thought it was good got accused of a DWI after leaving here but thankfully the judge was wise enough to see the breathalyzer was past it's calibraton. Nice afternoon at a nice venue

Google
Despite the ambiance being quite nice and the service being as expected the food quality and taste were so subpar that the overall takeaway was one of disappointment. I am aware the petroleum club is much more of a networking hub than anything else, but given the exclusive nature of the venue one can’t help but to expect the meals served to be in level with the ambiance and the connections made here.

Google
Great views even though there is nothing much to look at. Great services and the food is so so. Good place to have a wedding reception.

Google
This is the premier club of downtown Houston. Please note that Membership is required. The club sits on the 35th floor of the Total building. Valet service is available for the building as well as street parking if you’re willing to walk. The food is always delicious, the bar has a very intimate feeling, and the staff are the most friendly in the entire city. Perfect venue for club members to utilize parties, celebrate milestones, and make memories with colleagues, friends, and family.

Yelp
The Petroleum Club is an excellent venue space especially if you're related to O&G and/or love big sweeping downtown Houston views. The club is on the 35'th floor of the Total building in downtown Houston and has a multitude of rooms available for just about any function, ranging from the intimate private dining room for 8, to a large event space fit for 200+. I've attended industry luncheons, fundraisers, birthdays, and weddings at The Petroleum Club over the years, and have always been happy with how it turned out.

Yelp
Oh the views! You need to visit this Club for the views. There are several rooms and you certainly think you are living amongst the oil patch fat cats in this upscale dining Club. My meal was prepared and presented well. Server staff were helpful and friendly. It's a great experience especially if someone else is paying.

Yelp
Had the great honor of attending a wonderful wedding reception at The Petroleum Club in Houston Texas. The venue was beautifully decorated with fresh flowers and a display of amazing geological specimens. The ballroom was clean, organized and very well decorated. Staff members were attentive and polite. I'm looking forward to my next event.

Yelp
This is a great space to host an event/reception, especially if you are in the O&G industry. You can't help but feel proud (and like a baller) in the opulent space. I was here for a networking brunch event and the staff was very courteous. The food was ok, nothing show stopping, but the ambiance and stellar views more than makes up for this. Parking: valet (easiest, but pricey), metered street, or any nearby public garage.

Yelp
Panoramic views of the city and low key, genteel service. Very old school. Attended a dinner hosted by UH and the food is very good. We had a spinach and walnut salad with dried cranberries and blue cheese to start. The main dish was a filet mignon in a balsamic reduction sauce with mashed potatoes and charred squash. Dessert was ice cream topped with caramel and crushed nuts and a coconut macaroon. The menu was prearranged and my filet was perfectly medium rare and juicy. Worth a look if you're planning an event.

Yelp
I should have taken pictures. This new venue is just beautiful, modern and bright! It was so sad to see the former Bell Tower location so aged and unkempt toward its end. Anyway, located on the 35th floor of the Total building, this is a fabulous addition to downtown. I think it's great for day or evening events of all kinds. A beautiful view so probably lovely at night. I attend a luncheon and was very impressed with the physical space, service and food. The lunch I attended had a lovely buffet with a nice spicy fish entree, and chicken and beef to choose from. The mashed potatoes were delicious! I loved the coffee! I understand it's their special blend and it's delicious, especially with their pistachio biscotti. Overall I was very impressed and look forward to going back.

Yelp
As a long time member, I love the place. The wine dinners are always fun and the food is really great. Service is also solid, something I take seriously.

Yelp
Nice view from this restaurant. The food is a little blah, nothing special. Good for business but not to enjoy a meal or go just for food. They should improve a little the quality of food, sadly I got sick a little after eating there. Service is very good, and very courteous.

Yelp
the steak i was served should never have been cooked - the cut was terrible and half the steak inedible - it arrived cold and was very hard to cut. The bake potato was barely warm enough to melt the butter. Service was atrocious - when we were finished with meal decided to put some sweetener on table. had to go find server for service

Yelp
Attended friend's wedding here, the place setting was beautiful, and buffet food was quite decent. view was all right at night. The stereo system can use some upgrade though, it has a high pitch background noise which was annoying. The service was just all right, waiters take away all your utensils when you go to get a second plate and then come back to no forks :(

Yelp
I couldn't have asked for a better venue for my daughter's wedding reception! Stacey was an amazing help, the food was excellent (so many people said they'd never had better reception food), and the staff so very accommodating. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

Yelp
Nice place for lunch, dinner, and other events. I came here for lunch. I had a chicken dish with some sort of sauce on it. The food was good. The waitstaff is awesome.

Yelp
Renovated space at new location is beautiful. Service is stellar but to try to enjoy an evening and take in the views at the pool-hall "esque" bar is atrocious. Cigarette smoke is deplorable and really quite unbecoming of such a venue. Get rid of the 1970's smoky bar feel and you'll attract the proper clientele.

Yelp
A++ Service! Wonderful experience. Great food. Clean bathrooms. Friendly staff. Well stocked bar. This place really has it all!

Yelp
I am giving it a one only because the new venue location itself is beautiful. I would give it a zero for service. I had my wedding at this venue in January and was very disappointed with the service. My husband and I met with Shawn (the woman who is in charge of organizing the events) and she seemed organized, I told her I was a vegetarian and asked that the family tables be closest to our sweetheart table. We also went over a timeline of the day and left feeling relieved. So the wedding day comes around and its disaster after disaster. 1. i get a call from my day of coordinator saying Shawn is rushing us to arrive at the venue at 6, even though we had previously discussed 6.30. So we cut our wedding photos short only to find out we aren't needed and rushed off to a room where we are served cold food. 2. When we finally enter the main reception hall and sit at our sweetheart table for dinner, I am served chicken..... Even though i had previously explained I am a vegetarian. When my correct food finally arrives i don't have time to eat it before the speeches start. 3. Our starter salads came after the main dishes. 4. No one cleared our table and the groom had to get up and clear the table himself before the speeches started. 5. During the speeches I had to toast with a wine glass because none of the staff bothered to top up my champagne. 6. My family had to toast with water because no staff members gave them champagne. 7. When we got in contact with Shawn she simply said that it was our fault for the arrival time confusion even though I have emails confirming the 6.30 time schedule. She also tried to blame myself and family for not having champagne, stating that we must have been out of our seats so no one gave us champagne... Even though no one had left their seats since we arrived at the venue. 8. Both my husband and I's families table was pushed to the back and couldn't be seen from where i was sitting, something she assured me wouldn't happen. Very disappointing , for the amount of money you pay you'd expect better service. Be warned!

Yelp
Can only compare to Houston Club and this is definitely lacking. Food was either too bland (salads) or too salty (bisque). Food service was great. View was not as impressive since it is 14 floors lower. Decor was much more sparse and overall seemed smaller (and somehow "cheaper"). Receptionist was clueless about valet parking ($15/day) - said was cash only so I'm scrambling to find fee free ATM. One lady says BOA ATM very far in the tunnel but then valet manager says they do credit cards with nifty tablet. Yeah!

Yelp
The gumbo is so good, you'd want to rub it into your skin ... oh and the service is impeccable!

Yelp
I love going here & enjoying drinks in the bar after I close every business deal in Houston. I'm an Austin Native, but find this to be a spectacular place to enjoy an evening celebrating. The staff is exceptional, the bar selection is spot on, and the view is the best in town. Perfect for me...
