Where To Eat When You’re Visiting Madrid

"In the Great Tortilla de Patata Debate, Madrileños fall into different camps: onion or no onion, golden crust or runny egg—there’s even debate on how to chop the potatoes or flip the omelet itself (historically, many a señora has chucked her homemade tortilla in the trash after even just slightly overcooking it). Figure out which side you fall on with a trip to Pez Tortilla, a safe space for you to decide how you like it, pressure-free. The casual joint is often packed with groups who want to chat, drink craft beer, and snack, so you might be relegated to standing, especially during crowded lunch and dinner hours. Choose from different kinds of tortillas that feature ingredients like caramelized peppers, ham, truffle, or goat cheese. No matter which you go for, Pez’s versions have a drippy, runny center versus a well-done crust, so if raw(ish) egg isn’t your thing, opt for the crispy croquettes instead.  " - lori zaino

If you know tortillas and croquetas , you must come to this place! I’ve had hundreds of croquettes in the past and these are the best I’ve ever had! Try them all, but especially enjoy the chiporones en su tinta! Wow! Cool place, absolutely packed to the gills at lunchtime, but fun to eat there rub shoulders with the locals

Google
One of the most delicious tortillas I have had! A huge variety of options for different takes on the original tortilla. I would of course recommend to be enjoyed with a beer :)

Google
Super nice and friendly little tortilla restaurant which serves slizes of different kinds of tortilla, along with a piece of bread. Quite basic in its (tasty) offerings, but pulsating with life. I loved the atmosphere! (Only indoor seating/standing!)

Google
4.5/5 super crowded. tortillas here is more fluid than normal ones I got from other restaurants or even supermarkets. I personally like the taste. The staff couldn’t speak English therefore its a bit difficult to communicate, but finally we got what we want. The original tortilla is traditional, and the one with mushrooms? is more flavory.

My must every time I visit Madrid. Tortillas and croquettes are good and if you like craft bear - they have a lot of Madrid’s lagers and IPAs. Keep in mind that the place is small so it’s more for a quick snack rather for a long dinner with friends.

I really enjoyed having a tortilla and a drink here, it was very crowded but as a tourist it was great experience for me, also the tortillas were tasting really good, they different flavoured and I tried 3 of them, the best one is the one with mushrooms.

Google
So crowded and we queued for maybe 15 mins and got a little perch by the bar but so unreliable worth it. The tortillas were very tasty and clearly this place is very popular! My favourite lunch spot in Madrid.

Google
The best tortilla I’ve had ! There are 5 different types, among them 2 vegetarian ones. We tried the classic and the one with chistarra, both tasty, very melty inside. Vermut and craft beers on tap to drink. The beers were better than the vermut, which was a bit too sweet for my taste. On a Friday evening it was packed, we queued for around 15 min and got them a spot at the counter. The atmosphere was nice, very warm and vibrant.

Yelp
Small bar where you can enjoy tortilla or croquetas. No table service, probably because there isn't floor space to walk around. (Plus a sign says the staff is nude from the waist down, haha) You pick everything up from the bar. Good variety of beer, wine, and drinks are offered.

Yelp
Delicious The best tortilla I've had in Madrid. It's a cozy place and be prepared to wait for a table or eat at the bar, but whichever you choose, it's worth it.

Yelp
Great authentic bar vibe. The tortilla and beer is great, what more could you need. My favorite is the parmesan, basil and sun dried tomato flavor or the classic. It's packed in here and hard to find a table but a super upbeat and fun dinner environment

Yelp
This place is such a mood. A very popular hole-in-the-wall in the artsy district of Madrid. Obviously known for the tortillas and beer but I'm here to talk about those olives (see attached photo). I really don't care for olives but I could have eaten those all day. They were complimentary and the guy behind the bar noticed how much we loved them and gave us a second serving. THANK YOU. I don't know what kind of sorcery went into the making of those olives, but I've missed them from the moment I left Spain. They haunt me in my dreams...Jk, or not. *sobs* My visit was in 2019 so this is a very belated review. But, better late than never. Hope they're doing ok in the midst of Covid and all. Spain: I love you and miss you.

Yelp
We went between lunch and dinner and that ended up being good because the restaurant is quite small. The staff was very friendly and the food was quite good. We had the ham croquettes, a Parmesan Spanish omelette, and the classic Spanish omelette. It's worth a visit.

Yelp
Almost every restaurant/bar/cafe in the entire country of Spain sells tortilla, but it was nice to have some different options of tortilla here! You can get tortilla with chorizo, different cheeses, garnishes, etc. Fun to have options! The best part about this place? The beers on tap. They have a more diverse list than most places in Madrid as well and *bonus* they had fun names. The vibe here is fun and the place is usually crowded.

Yelp
The best tortilla I had during the week I spent in Madrid! I ate many tortillas and this ranked the highest in my list. Great atmosphere, wine, beer and food! The service was also fantastic!

Yelp
Best tortilla's in Madrid. Great service and relaxed atmosphere. If you go, as with most tortilla's places go to the bar to order and pick up. Very reasonable prices. Amazing vino!

Yelp
I wanted to go here because I was intrigued by their unique tortilla flavors and I was getting bored of just plain tortillas. I tried 3 different tortillas, as well as 3 of their croqueta flavors, which are also interesting. Of the 3 the I tried, my favorite tortilla was definitely the goat cheese and caramelized onion one. The rich goat cheese added so much flavor to it, and the caramelized onion added a nice sweetness. Regardless of fillings, I still enjoyed all of their tortillas, since they're all ridiculously melty and creamy inside, oozing with delicious tortilla essence. And the croquetas were great, too. The outside is perfectly crispy, while the inside is very creamy and flavorful. My favorites were the squid ink one (since it tastes like squid) and the mushroom truffle one (since it tastes like truffle and mushroom). I was disappointed by the shrimp one because I couldn't taste any shrimp. Overall, I like this place a lot because they excel at what they do: tortillas and croquetas. The quality is definitely better than most, and both go really well with their great beer options.

Yelp
We had tortilla at many establishments during a recent trip to Madrid and Sevilla. None of them compared to those at Pez. The textures and flavors of the few we tried (including sun-dried tomato and original) blew all of the other right out of the water. The beer was also great and a nice break from the copious amounts of vino tinto we had been drinking. We also learned that you can take an entire tortilla away for about 18 euros, which is a great price given how much food you get! We'll definitely be back on future trips to Madrid.

Yelp
Pez Tortilla was the best meal of our entire trip to Madrid. If you go nowhere else, go here and try and many of their gourmet tortillas as possible as their menu is filled with all different interesting flavors. Loved the croquettas and wine too! The staff was friendly, accommodating and able to offer great recommendations, including veg-friendly options. This place has a relaxed cafe atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Literally a hole in a wall kind of place. We were having drinks late night across the street and read about this place so decided to go try their tortilla. Was really good. But they served it cold. Wish it was warm food. Being a vegetarian, couldn't try anything else since this was the only dish without meat.

Yelp
Pez Tortilla is a wonderful place to nosh on gourmet tortillas and drink craft beer. I ate the asparagus tortilla and it was wonderfully cooked. More importantly, the beer selection had more depth than many other menus that I saw during my time in Madrid. Everything was very well priced and the service was very attentive.

Yelp
Went there with my friend (we are both tourists) and sat at a table enjoying our night. We had 1 drink here and an hour later a man sat at a stool beside us and began talking to us and asking questions, making us uncomfortable. A lady who is part of the staff immediately made eye contact with my friend and asked if we are okay with her thumb. My friend nodded no and she came to our rescue by asking the man to stop interjecting our conversation and night. We headed out a couple minutes after that and while we were leaving, another staff member came and apologized to us for the situation. We stood out for our Uber and the creepy man came out the door to talk to us again. As soon as he said a couple things, a 3rd staff member opened the door and waited with us till we got safely in our Uber. We were so touched by how nice and caring they were and recommend this place to everyone!!!

Yelp
Very authentic Spanish tortilla restaurant. This is not touristic and highly recommended to get to know the local culture.

Yelp
Really good selection of beers on tap (especially for Spain). Great tortilla and croquettes. Come prepared to stand and knock elbows at the bar and you'll be rewarded with delicious, artisanal takes on staples of Spanish cuisine.

Yelp
Not very efficient staff; we even couldn't try the food since we had to leave. I hope I could change my opinion in future visits

Yelp
Best tortilla I've ever had (and I used to live in Madrid). Great prices and bustling ambience. If you go around 9pm or later, though, you'll probably have to stand. Also has a nice beer selection (I had a very affordable and tasty trippel). Still worth it!

Yelp
This is a live place fun atmosphere. Excellent croquettes and tortilla. The classica con ceballa pochada is a tortilla worth the waiting and standing. The inside is a typical standing or high seating tapas/bar. The food and legacy of being there forever makes the place one to go by

Yelp
great place they don't serve any food from 4 - 7:30 Saturdays and Sundays. weekdays open at 6pm. I had the rum and coke with lemon. very big beer selection. staff very nice and speaks good english. they do croquetas. they are excellent and change everyday. drinks are 6 euros. very good price. when the kitchen is closed they give you chips. but make a point to taste their food you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
It's not that often that you find a bar with a great craft beer selection in Madrid. On top of that one that serves delicious versions of Spanish tortilla for 3€ a portion! Last time I had the sun dried tomato, Parmesan and basil tortilla and it was dreamy.

Alison W.

Yelp
Tasty tortillas but we weren't expecting the amount of cheese in them. We were expecting an omelette level of cheese, and these were closer to a Mac-and-cheese level of cheese. Perhaps the tortillas were undercooked. The jamón, brie and truffle was delicious but the other tortillas and the croquetas were too salty. Overall fun atmosphere and good beer.

Kat L.

Yelp
IPAs!!!!! And just beer other than Mahou!! Tortilla portions are huge and only 3 euro. Croquetas looked like less of a good deal, but I haven't tried. Their beer menu changes and isn't always updated online, but when I was there this week there were a few beers from California, 2 from MAD brewing, and a few others. Highly recommend!
