"Pharaohs, an Egyptian restaurant in the Tenderloin, serves traditional and modern Egyptian dishes. Known for its authentic Egyptian cuisine, it offers unique dishes such as fava bean falafel, molokheya, and hawawashi. The restaurant, opened by a father and his three sons in homage to their late mother, is closing after 12 years, marking the end of a significant cultural outpost for Egyptians in the Bay Area." - Antony Fangary

Google
We got the King Tut fries because of the superficial similarities to the super fries menu option you see in Tucson. We also got a shawarma wrap and some fries. Everything was made to order and it was great. The restaurant is cozy, the person who took our order and brought our food was really nice. It didn’t seem like we ordered that much, but we did have to get a box to take home a ton of leftovers. As a first timer to San Francisco it can be a little overwhelming to navigate at first. This was a great spot to feel welcome and take a break from the hustle and bustle.

Google
Ordered delivery so no comment about its Atmosphere or service at the restaurant. Food is Ok. If they use better quality material (e.g. beef) I believe food could be more tasty.

Google
Tasty Egyptian food in the TenderNob. Affordable prices and nice portion sizes. The lamb and beef shawarma is always a hit in dish form or wrap. And so is the hummus. The Koshari was delicious. It was a beautiful symphony of different flavors and textures. The jute plant soup on the other hand is an acquired taste for sure. Tasty but texture wise.

What an experience it was. Nostalgic, mind and taste journey for the soul. Loved the place. The food was amazing, it definitely took me back to the streets of Cairo and the service was top notch as Malik made the experience personal and wefelt like we are part of his family. My wife was blown away over the food and how good it was. Thank you guys for a wonderful meal and all around experience. Looking forward to our next visit.

Google
It's been a good decade since I've last had koshari (and it was when I had it in Cairo, Egypt). Finally found a spot and got some. Might not be the authentic thing to do(?), but they let me add lamb to it. Delicious. And their kunafa is good, too! The cashier/waiter was super nice. Go check it out.

Google
🌟 Variety in the menu authentic and good options 🌟 Prices are very reasonable 🌟 Ambience: Hole in the wall, similar to most regular authentic egyptian restaurants. Egyptian music satellite channel on TV. Handicapped access to toilet is through the next door hotel !!! Now food quality: Precooked and heated food, soggy koshary with fried onion that is not crunchy. Lentil is not dark nor red and tomato sauce not spicy enough. Quantities of pasta and pees are a lot for a small size. Dessert: Om Ali tastes good, right amount of coconut, raisins and pistachios, but not much filo. Almost like cold sahlab rather than Om Ali. Konafa had too much custard and very little actual konafa, also somewhat dry.

We are going to Egypt in November and have been so curious about the food that we have been seeing on youTube, so we decided to check out an Egyptian restaurant tonight while visiting in San Francisco. Bonus that it was just a 5-block walk from our hotel! We tried koshari, falafel, and a beef and lamb dinner plate that had rice, vegetables, pita and hummus. For dessert we tried walnut baklava, pistachio burma, and kunafa. I found it to be quite delish! My personal favorite has to be the kunafa dessert which was highly recommended by the guy that works there and I'm SO glad that he did! He was very helpful and friendly and told us all about any fish we inquired about. Definitely check this place out!!!

Google
Great tasting food and prompt service. A little pricey but I loved the unique cuisine offerings such as moolakayeh and rice. I ordered delivery so can’t comment on dining area.

Antonio A.

Yelp
Great quality, flavor, and balance of exclusively Egyptian dishes with other Mediterranean classics! Had the falafel wrap which was pleasantly tender (not overcooked / too crunchy) - get it with the fries inside. So tasty! First time tasting the koshari with chicken, so could only compare it to other dishes I've had. The pasta, chicken, and veggies came together nicely. I would consider ordering it again.

Yelp
We had a late night dinner at this Egyptian restaurant after attending the "circus" a couple doors down, and loved the place. The chicken shawarma plate and kofta kabab plate (beef and lamb) were freshly prepared, the meats seasoned well and full of flavor not salt. We chose the garlic sauce on the side (the other option was hummus) and this creamy aioli was uniquely delicious and great for dipping the pita bread slices. The salad had a vinegar based dressing which was a bit too tangy/spicy for me. But other than that, every part of our dishes was tasty and satisfying. The restaurant had plenty of seating available and a lovely Egyptian-themed atmosphere. And the worker who helped us was friendly and provided sufficient service on a Saturday night.

Yelp
I ordered koshari since I had looked at the reviews beforehand and it sounded like this is an Egyptian dish that isn't ready to find in US restaurants. They had it ready earlier than the estimated pickup time. I found the macaroni and noodles to be rather plain and underwhelming and wish they were crispier, and the lentils and rice were just okay, but the garbanzo beans/chickpeas were good and the caramelized onions were definitely my favorite part since they were sweet and crispy. Overall it was pretty good though and it is vegetarian; I am not qualified to judge how this compares to koshari elsewhere or how it's traditionally made.

Yelp
After watching home Alone at the symphony my Wife and I were hungry and I looked up this spot near our hotel. We took a Uber there. We ordered a lot of things and The rice was so good! The service was amazing too.nice guy at the front. All The food is fresh and homemade

Dina F.

Yelp
Food is so delicious here! We went in last night for a late night snack at 11:55 and he still took our order! We got the kofta wrap and it tasted delicious. It was made fresh! We enjoyed it so much that we went back today for lunch before leaving town! We ordered a kofta wrap and chicken shawarma wrap. Both were so good! Amazing portion. My husband and I shared both and they were so good! The sauce and seasoning in these is so yummy. We ate the food so fast I didn't get a chance to take a picture. Trust me when I say the food is great! I've had a lot of middle Eastern/Mediterranean/egyptian food and this was absolutely delicious. I appreciated them letting us order so close to closing time. The ambiance is chill. It's decorated with Egyptian items to give that Egyptian atmosphere. Overall good and will be back next time we are in town.

Yelp
This is a place I'd walked by dozens of times, but only recently decided to check out after craving Mediterranean one day... and I'm very glad I did! Pharaohs is a small establishment tucked in the Tendernob district. We were greeted kindly by the gentlemen in the restaurant, and decided to dine in. Pharaohs offers a self-serve ordering kiosk, making the order experience simple and efficient. I ordered the ahmose wrap, which is a wrap with lamb, beef, and chicken shawarma mixed in with onion and tomatoes. The wrap was heavenly! The meats were tender and perfectly cooked, with a lovely blend of sauce balanced in perfect ratio. I ordered mine with "medium" spice, but could unfortunately taste virtually no spice at all... so if you want a kick to your meal here, I'd err on the side of extra spice! We also ordered the hawawshy, which is toasted pita stuffed with Egyptian ground beef and lamb, and it was every bit as good as the ahmose wrap. The pita bread was warm and crispy, and provided a delicious shell for the tenderness of the seasoned beef and lamb. The fries that we ordered with both entrees were also seasoned, crispy, and delicious counterparts to the wrap and hawawshy! If you're looking for delicious Mediterranean food, Pharaohs has you covered. I will definitely be back to take on those delicious-looking King Tut fries...

Tim P.

Yelp
Came here specifically for koshari. It's a specifically Egyptian dish so most "Middle Eastern" places don't serve it. While passing by on the bus I noticed Pharaoh's had a big sign advertising it so I made a note to stop by. Glad I did. Crisp onions, garlic laden tomato sauce, perfectly cokes lentils and rice. It was sooooo satisfying! Now I can't wait to come back and try the molokiyah. I first enjoyed koshari during a lengthy visit to Cairo. Could not enough of it there! Too bad they don't serve hibiscus tea.

Chandan J.

Yelp
Koshari and kunafa are the best. The service was fast and the place has a good vibe. Came here for carb load before SF run, Reppin Sacramento. The Kings will be back here again for playoffs.

J T.

Yelp
I see a lot of great reviews here but to me the was not good. I ordered the lamb & beef plate and some of my friends ordered the chicken wrap. Non of us could finish the food, it was not edible. We took 3 or for bites and that was it. The meat was dry and chewy. I have been sick for last 4 days with food poisoning.

Justin T.

Yelp
Don't sleep on the kunafa! Absolutely out of this world delicious. Sad to report I didn't get a chance to try their actual food; had just gotten dinner and had a hankering for something sweet when we happened upon pharaohs. If we hadn't been eating all day I would have tried to petition to get a shawarma, but we were stuffed- always room for dessert tho, and the kunafa did not disappoint!

Dawn F.

Yelp
My Egyptian-American friend brought me here on a recent trip, telling me that the food here tastes like home. We came here so many times during our trip so we could get shwarma, koshari, charboiled chicken legs, and of course, kunafa, baklava, and pistachio burma. It may not look like much from the outside, or inside, but the food was amazing.

Thang P.

Yelp
Did a group order on 2/28/24 and went into the location. Food took over an hour from time of order and a whole entrée was missed. We figured it happens but when we started eating the food was over salted and extremely dry. We tried several of the dishes and this was a theme in all of the dishes. I don't know if they were having a bad day but this was really an disappointing experience. I would not recommend this place.

William M.

Yelp
Misr...that's where the first bite of the koshari took me. I was back in Egypt and the flavors and textures and smells transported me. Absolutely delicious. The Luxor hummus is so incredibly wonderful, and the depth of flavors are superb. Lamb and beef shawarma. Words fail. I had to pace myself so as not to devour it all in a nonce. How fantastic. This place is the real deal. Egyptian food in San Francisco. And what wonderful and delicious food it is. Enjoy!

Geraldine S.

Yelp
Ordered delivery and it was delicious! Food came quickly and was still warm. I had the chicken shawarma wrap and a side salad and would definitely recommend. Food portions are good for one person. I was full after the wrap. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
22.06.05 Very friendly nice gentleman With many great suggestions Homemade chicken Quarter thigh & leg Moist and well seasoned Have a nice smoky grill flavor Kofe kafta

Jamie W.

Yelp
I've never had Egyptian food, but I've had my share of shawarma. When I saw this place across the street from my hotel, I wanted to try it for lunch. I had the lamb and beef shawarma wrap with a side of garlic sauce to-go. The wrap itself was pretty delicious, but the garlic sauce blew it over the top... in a good way. The sauce was creamy, cool and full of flavor. I loved the unexpected pickles in the wrap. Sounds a bit strange, but they were delicious. I paid at $21 including a tip, I didn't get any other sides and this was the perfect amount of food for lunch. Thankfully I got my order to go, as there was so much saucy goodness going on, I ended up wearing some of it. The sacrifices we go through... I'll be back the next time I'm in town.

Graham B.

Yelp
Mediocre quality chicken shawarma "wrap", 2x the price it was worth. Maybe other menu items are good? ...probably won't be back to find out, too many better options within a couple blocks walking distance.

Brandon R.

Yelp
Pharaohs is a dope spot. Really love their food, I pop in for lunch if at union square and sometimes get delivery for dinner. Tonight I tried something new - Hawawshy. Holy sh¡t was this thing good! Like a Egyptian empanada, lamb and ground beef in a griddled pita. Absolutely delicious and travelled well delivery. I also got the Ahmose platter, which I hadn't before. The meat combination with the tomato and onion was delicious. Their rice is always so good too, make sure to get the garlic sauce!

Hayden S.

Yelp
While recently in San Fransisco, we stayed at a hotel near Pharaohs and were in need of a pre-dinner snack, so we decided to stop in for wraps. I got the falafel wrap, but not the original, the one that was souped up with the extra fixings! I was desperately hungry when we ordered so the bar was pretty low, but I thoroughly enjoyed every bite of the wrap! The bread itself was on the thinner side and seemed a touch dry to me, but the falafel was solid and combined with all the other fixings it really hit the spot. Tip though, when ordering through the Yelp app keep in mind that the status may not be up to date. In the app it showed our order hadn't even been confirmed yet, but when we got there it was ready for us. Sorry for the lack of pictures, I was too hungry to pause for that!

Shasha K.

Yelp
Came here on Friday night around 7pm. Great seating, easy to social distance and food was amazing. We ordered the Koshary, the chicken shawarma, lamb and chicken shawarma and French fries. The cost was less than $50 which was very reasonable and the food was fresh and good! Highly recommend this place for authentic Egyptian food!

Sophia W.

Yelp
We got the Lamb and Beef Shawarma Plate and Hawawshy. The lamb and beef was super dry but their hummus is really good. I prefer the Hawawshy more, however the meat inside the Hawawshy was slightly red. I hope it was fully cooked.

Ed G.

Yelp
This place is good place for yummy tasty clean healthy bite! They cook the food very well and the food here is always fresh! I def recommend this place they have so many option from shawarma to shawarma plates or bowls.

Nikolette S.

Yelp
I ordered the falafel wrap. The flavors were delicious. The lavash was grilled. Love that. The falafels were a little soft. The tomato was mealy. Texturally the wrap was bit mushy with lots of crunchy onion. I am used to some other veggies and herbs (cucumber, parsley, etc). Again the flavors were good. But I did not finish the wrap. When I order from Oasis I always finish. If I came back I would order some thing else like the Shawarma. Looks good! Also the restaurant is very clean inside.

Anita E.

Yelp
Got a little hungry before dinner time so we hopped into this place for a small bite. We shared the beef and lamb shawarma wrap and a side of hummus. The shawarma was juicy and tasty. The hummus was different. The texture was lumpier and the taste wasn't what we're used to. All in all, a good place for a quick bite.

Simpreet K.

Yelp
This review is for the food only because I ordered it in and didn't visit the restaurant itself. The prices are decent for the size of the food portions and there are vegetarian and vegan choices as well. I ordered the Pharaoh's wrap which is vegetarian with hummus and the walnut baklava. The wrap was pretty big, I couldn't finish it and I was so full from lunch that I could barely eat dinner. So, if you are really hungry get the wrap. The garlic sauce added a lot of flavor and the falafel were not too dry like some other places. I meant to eat only half of the walnut baklava piece but ended up devouring it all.

Munch T.

Yelp
We love food SHAWARMA'CH! Haha, get it? After another day in the big city of San Francisco we were craving some Egyptian food and we found @Pharaohs Mediterranean Sandwiches. Our Dinner: Chicken Shawarma Wrap Beef and Lamb Plate Everything was amazing and packed full of flavor! Yelp
Just came across this place in SF city, and tried couple dishes. I normally don't write reviews but we did have a good time with good food that night and I decided to share the experience. Would highly recommed the Pheros Egyptian restaurant for take away / dine in. foods are absolutely tasty and service was super friendly, we also had chance to have freshly made Knafeh also all Halal food.

Jennifer N.

Yelp
First time having Egyptian food! Its very similar to mediterranean if not...the same. I said it, I said what I said. I do appreciate the interior decor though, the fidelity adds to the character. The plates are also big enough to share but you can't leave without trying their meat pie!

Mikee P.

Yelp
First time at this place. I've always liked Mediterranean cuisine and have tried a couple places. This one is on my top 2 after Sajj. The sauce on the King Tut Fries was really tasty with a little bit of spice. It was not overwhelming and it complimented the fries really good. I ordered Chicken Shawarma Plate and there's just so many flavors in it! The hummus was fresh and the Pita bread were soft. I ,however, didn't fancy the meet that much. It was okay. All in all, I would come back here for a quick fix for a Mediterranean flavor.

Rayy P.

Yelp
food was extremely overpriced for the miniature portions they serve and underwhelming flavor

Mahmoud A.

Yelp
Great Koshari! The only Egyptian food in San Francisco! Single ladies holler at Former Professional basketball player Nabil (Nah-Beel). Same menu since back then! Great spot! Very clean! Very nice service! They have regular drinks and drinking yogurt you know the vibes! Go and you will be happy you went in and kept a good authentic business like this stay busy! Their menu is so nice that they have it on the wall and everything has a picture for people like me who are visual! You can figure out parking on your own it's SF! Street parking, double park for a hot second, pay for indoor parking! Order however you do! You won't regret it! I'd recommend you to go in there and have that experience!

Denise C.

Yelp
Had the burger and it had bacon. Also got the small fries for $2. Pretty good dinner and tried this Mediterranean Egyptian spot on Geary in the TL. The TL has a Middle Eastern community and many restaurants.

Ellen F.

Yelp
We went late at night, the place was empty and took forever to get the food. Presentation was looking really nice but the food was ok. We had the chicken shawarma and the kofta kabob with fries, which were ok but nothing special.

Sherif E.

Yelp
The food quality is really good, very friendly, very accommodating, they have quite a selection, my place to go for Mediterranean

Robert B.

Yelp
The food was amazing. Tried multiple wraps along with their fries. Would definitely recommend.

Sameh A.

Yelp
My first time trying an authentic Egyptian cuisine in the US, really impressed. I ordered the koshari which is one of my favorite dishes that I have t had since Egypt, service was very friendly and restaurant was clean but small seating options. The koshari was great ! Really enjoyed it and was hoping to order more dishes but wasn't hungry. Surrounding Area is questionable so ordering delivery may be best, they should expand to hot spots around San Fran. Great Mediterranean/ Egyptian restaurant !!

Drew P.

Yelp
Shokran to this delicious and friendly Egyptian food on Geary. Food was ready on time and extremely tasty.

Emad G.

Yelp
Very nice place. Food is really good. As an Egyptian, I know it's good. I manage the Hotel 2 blocks away from them and I come for lunch a lot. Highly recommend.

Paul L.

Yelp
Cheap and delicious, do not be fooled by the sketchy location as it is clean and welcoming inside. The fact they had a book with a mummy in it and a sign above that read "Cursed Book, Do Not Open" put it to 10 stars out of 5 for me. These guys are awesome.

Signe S.

Yelp
I always walk by this place and decided to stop in. Let me tell you this is the BEST chicken shawarma place I have had in SF. I have tried a lot of restaurants, popular and local. Everything taste so fresh and delicious. I will recommend this place to everyone. Service was great and welcoming and restaurant was very clean. I will be coming back here all the time and will be trying more things. The backlava also is outstanding it's not too sweet it's perfect.

Larissa M.

Yelp
I'll be honest, the only reason my friend and I came here is because we were scared of the line at Mensho further up the street. That said, both of us are quite adventurous and love to try new things - so we were pleasantly pleased when we found things on the menu that we weren't acquainted with. I like to believe I have a more diverse palate than average, but I had absolutely no idea what "koshari" is - and neither did she. I'm not gonna lie, it sounded a bit odd. Rice, lentils, AND pasta? Together? Especially as someone who has a history of eating "meat and salad", koshari would normally be a hard sell... but I figured, gotta try it at least once, right? I just had to add chicken on it, since I NEED some meat in my diet, but if you're the kind of person that finds pasta with no meat satisfying, you'll like it without it. Let me say, I was surprised. It was delicious!! Wasn't similar to anything I've had before - closest thing would be a mashup of Indian, Italian, and American food. I was originally disappointed at the size of the dish (it's maybe equivalent to a large bowl of rice at a Chinese restaurant), but quickly realized why it's so small... koshari is filling as fuck. All those carbs lead to a pretty filling meal. I don't know if I'd get it again as I usually don't eat that type of cuisine, but I would certainly recommend it to others. I'll definitely be back to try some other interesting menu items next time!

Joe M.

Yelp
Excellent homecooked Koshari. My personal favorite Pistachio Burma in the city. The restaurant itself is warm and welcoming. If you're a local, it can become your go-to spot. Affordable prices!

Vincent D.

Yelp
We had a great experience there today for lunch, the food was fabulous! We will come back, and recommend it :)

Jimmy C.

Yelp
Since I've been to Pharaoh's Mediterranean Sandwich few many times, it's about time I write my review based on today's experience. This is the first, last, and the only café with a taste of Egyptian. I wanted to break down into how many times I visited to buy a meal or a dessert; ones that I checked in and ones I didn't (if I recall correctly). First one I had was Koshari (Egyptian national dish), second one was a pair of hawawshi, third one was the Egyptian jute, fourth one was Cleopatra's rice pudding, and fifth one was the Luxor fava beans. Of course, I had to try as many unique creations to realize it's country of origin. So for lunch on Memorial Day, I order Pharaoh's Veggie Deluxe, and choose both baba ghanoush and cucumber yogurt. Time to eat like an Egyptian! Everything on the big wooden plate looks and plated as the Pharaoh is pleased. The pieces of pita bread taste extra crispy (guess it's the virgin olive oil that does the trick). The sourness of the dressing on diced tomatoes and lettuce is just right. The cream topped falafel balls have a decent crunchiness on the outside with the fluffy green core on the inside. The cucumber yogurt with bits of cayenne pepper taste as splendid as it is tart and salty (great for a yogurt dip). As for the baba ghanoush, well it tastes as fine as it is. There's still other creative palates I still have yet to come across (not the one that has liver in it). That's why I couldn't stop coming to the one and only Egyptian café of Tenderloin. There are some of the things I like about the atmosphere, its customer service, its decorations, its menu selections, and the Egyptian music videos on TV. I have plenty of respect for everyone working here. I might be back if I ever want to try a different dish.

Elliot C.

Yelp
Best Mediterranean spot in the area hands down. Generous portions and really flavorful. Quick service so you can sit down and get a full meal in under 30 minutes at a very reasonable price.

Todd G.

Yelp
4.5 stars. Surprisingly good Mediterranean food on Geary Street in San Francisco. We had the Ahmose Plate and Molykheya Curry with kafta and rice. Very tasty. Nice service. Delicious food. My girlfriend visited Egypt several times, so she really enjoyed eating here.

Bruce K.

Yelp
As I was going through my list of cuisines I wanted to eat when I was in the city, I chose this place to get mediterranean checked off. For a quick place, this place was perfect and what I got in return was a win in my book. I ordered a schwarma and took it out to go back to my hotel to eat. This thing was big! It was also tasty! All in all, there's not much that you can say about a take out spot, and for me as long as the food was good is all that matters to me. It was bursting with flavor, and getting my food didn't take that long. If you're looking for somewhere quick and get full off of one wrap, this is the place.

Usman P.

Yelp
I love this joint. Came here a second time after a concert and knew this was the place I wanted to go because of their fries, but expanded my choices with an additional two entrees. Had the lamb/beef mixed burger which was fantastic and had immense flavor. Meat was tender and delicious, coated with their own house sauce which is a mixture of sweet and savory. The chicken leg dish was also fantastic. It was lightly crisped, super tender, and delicious with every bite. The small side salad accompanied with the entree had quite a bit of flavor and great seasoning. Loved the pita and hummus side as well. The King Tut Fries were great as always. Coated in the delicious house sauce and great late night food, it's a staple. Service is super friendly, music is great and upbeat, and the portions are excellent!

John S.

Yelp
This is a fantastic hole-in-the-wall that has a subtle storefront. Thanks to Yelp's awesomeness, I tried this joint on a lazy Thursday evening. From peeking around at other tables, I noticed that the Pharaohs Falafal Wrap was a popular order. It's a falafel sandwich with garlic-marinaded eggplant layered on top. With the bright fluorescent lights and the loud Middle Eastern music, this is not a good date spot. However, this place should go on every cheap-eats list because the prices are as low as they go in the area. On my most recent visit I tried the Mousakka and Pita. At $8.49 it's the bargain of the century. It was five-stars delicious. I'd love to have the recipe and try to make it home, but I suspect it requires a lot of slow cooking to get the eggplant that tender. The staff is friendly and welcoming. They are happy to advise on your order. Just tell them your food constraints and they'll point you in the right direction.
