What Ho, Apothecary! 18 Intriguing Pharmacy Museums

"It was 1573 when the first pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca was opened in this house, and it has been an almost uninterrupted apothecary’s haven for close to 450 years now (with a regrettable stint as a communist pastry shop). For the last sixty years, the house has been a museum of pharmacy, holding within some of the most fascinating artifacts from a time when the lines between medicine and alchemy were still quite blurred. This enthralling museum has one of the oldest, most unusual and intriguing collections of (al)chemical artifacts and tools in Transylvania, if not the whole of Eastern Europe, comprised of roughly 3,000 pieces. Known as the Hintz House, due to the legendary family of apothecaries who took over the pharmacy in 1863 and ran it until the communist take-over of 1949, the museum has a large collection of preserved specimens of substances — both organic and mineral — which apothecaries would use to treat illnesses hundreds of years ago. The purposes of these substances (such as the famous “mummy dust” for example) are explained in little notes, and the tour guide is very knowledgeable in addition. The museum also preserves the apothecary’s secret crucible room, a small underground space where most poultices and healing recipes were concocted by the head apothecary and his apprentice with utmost secrecy. Not only does the museum provide a glimpse into the veiled world of medieval and renaissance era apothecaries, it also showcases tomes and ledgers that give the visitor a clearer picture of what everyday society was like during that time.  Update May 2019: It is closed and under construction." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Very interesting and fascinating museum. You can see and interact with all sorts of of pharmacy and medical equipments, plus the architecture of the building outside and inside is very beautiful. Would definitely recommend, especially if you study medicine and/or pharmacy. The prices are very accessible, and students have a significant discount.

It’s impressive how much work has been put into restoring the museum - there’s a lot of medical history you can emerge into once you enter the place. Take your time to discover each object and check out the video showcasing the story of the place. I warmly recommend a visit if you are from Cluj or passing by as a tourist 😊 Price is quite decent for the experience you get.

The museum is nicely renovated. Unfortunately, audio guides were nog functioning, but for the live guide, they wanted us to pay extra. Not fair from my point of view. Also, very sad that a museum wich is basically about a hungarian pharmacist family in a city with many hungarians has no descriptions on the wall in hungarian but in egnglish they do...maybe the audioguide what we paid for but were informed that is nog functional just after purchase. Having, of course, the well-known "nu depinde de noi" comment from the staff. When I was a kid, I remember how nice human giude was included in the price, making the museum very interesting for us.

Small but very beautifully renovated museum. It takes around 20-30 minutes to visit, entrance fee is 30 lei.

Above expectation. Impressive restauration work and artifacts. Not only the people interested in pharmacy and medicine will enjoy the museum but also those interested in history and architecture. There are basically two collections to explore: pharmaceuticals collection and medical instruments collection. The pharmaceutical collection, including various recipients, botanicals and weird magic medicines like castor oil and lizard powder, is exposed at the ground level. The medical instruments collection is exposed underground, in the former cellar of the historical pharmacy of Dr. Hintz. It made me feel very old, as some of those vintage utensils traumatized me during childhood.

Must see museum in Cluj. Our guide, David Stefan, was amazing and made the guided tour our highlight of the day.

It's worth visiting even only to see house Hintz has been restored, but the exhibits are great and presented in a great way, as you have the option to use a digital guide (written or audio).
