The City Is Giving Out Free Boxes of Food to Anyone Who Needs | Eater Philly

"I saw the city is working with Philabundance to provide free boxes of food for pickup (each designed to last five days) at 20 sites on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon, with plans to add more locations; it's one box per household, anyone can get a box with no ID or proof of income required, and people can donate to Philabundance to support the program." - Rachel Vigoda

This place is awesome 👌 they are a blessing for the homeless and people who struggle putting food on their table. Love to volunteer here.

I've witnessed firsthand how essential Philabundance's work is to supporting our neighbors dealing with food insecurity. I worked at a community center that distributed weekly Philabundance groceries and takeaway meals to hundreds of those in need. You can volunteer on their website to do a 3-hour food packing shift at their distribution center. I've participated in these shifts and donor nights. It's a great workout for an important cause, and you make new friends working together.

Honored to have the privilege to help Philabundance. Everyone was so organized and helpful. Thank you for all you do! #haulawayhunger

I first encountered Philabundance in 1996, when they convinced a large fast food chain to donate their leftover chicken and sides nightly. No small feat because they had to remove any mention of the chain. They have grown to such heights, renewing my faith in humanity, all the while representing the generosity of the Delaware Valley. Keep up the great work and God bless 🙏

Google
They're a food bank that supplies the 9 county metro Philadelphia area with fresh food and non-perishables. Their web site offers info on the areas hungry, how to help, and how to get help. Excellent volunteer opportunities and also consider starting your own at work or other personal food drive.

My brokerage firm Johnson, Kendall & Johnson had a wonderful time volunteering today. This truly is one of the best nonprofits making a huge difference in the city of Philadelphia. Can’t wait to volunteer again

Google
Wonderful non-profit organization that distributes food all over the Delaware Valley. You can volunteer at the warehouse and help sort canned goods or at one of their events in city or surrounding counties. Great organization and if you can donate to them it is greatly appreciated. Just a $1 donation can be used to make 2 meals.

Yelp
These people are pros at managing volunteers. This is not an easy task. You have to understand first what they can learn to do in a very short period of time. Then you need to make sure they're enjoying doing it. Lastly, you need it done right. It's a skill. Philabundance clearly understands this and has the entire process mastered - from check in to departure. I arrived to work with a group of colleagues from my company. The volunteers have their own parking spaces and their own sign in and waiting area. Cleverly they have these little kiosk things that allow you to use your credit card and make an instant donation that adds to a total for your group. Nice. Tables, chairs, clear lockers for storing personal goods, heavy coats along one wall for those working in the refrigerated area. We had a brief orientation where they talked about the mission of Philabundance, then we were split into two projects. I was on a project making up food boxes for elderly people in need. They reviewed what each of us did and we were off. The boxes came along a conveyer belt and we all had stations. I kept thinking of the "I Love Lucy" episode and smiled to myself. We worked a total of 3 1/2 hours with a 20 minute break halfway through. We made up our goal of boxes - 600 - and helped the other team package pints of milk in the cooler area when we were done. Group photo on the way out, and we were leaving feeling accomplished and happy. They were professional, friendly and very organized. Impressed.

Yelp
Volunteered here with a bunch of coworkers. Easy to find near the stadium with plenty of free parking. The warehouse is huge. We were given a nice talk and watched a cool video before we started working. They have lockers w/ locks to borrow so you can store you purse or bag. No food or drinks are allowed in the warehouse. On the side of the conveyor belt I was on we sorted food in 30lb boxes which added up to a pallet. The volunteer side is very well organized. From all the food donated I can see the collection side is well organized as well. Will I be back? Yes!

Yelp
I've been here twice to put in some sweat equity. Once was with work, the other time was for Metallica's charity day. Both times, I was put on an assembly line with a job to do. Shifts were about three hours? Maybe less, but it's so rewarding. I just love it. I'm a huge fan of working in the freezer too. It's truly an eye opening experience too that might change the way you manage food. Ways to reduce waste or help get food to the needy. I wish more people had the opportunity to help out and if you ever do, please jump at the chance.

Yelp
This place really needs no introduction, they have been doing great things all over the Philadelphia and surrounding area for years. I have had the privilege to volunteer here twice for Family night. Family night is a great time to grab your little ones (over 8 ) and help them see the impact they can have, even at a young age. The children love it and are so proud of their accomplishments at the end. Chris who runs the volunteer division is extremely helpful if you are looking to make an event out of it. Usually, it's about a 2-3 month wait for large groups, so start early. The portal is the best way to sign up and it has all upcoming events with locations and times. The people that are there to assist you are always so friendly and helpful. Without citizens who support the volunteer opportunities, Philabundance would have to hire people, which would take away from resources to feed the community. Amazing place, go volunteer!!

Yelp
I joined a half dozen work colleagues one afternoon in early June. I love the mission in Philabundance carries helping those in need all throughout the year.

Yelp
Great charity and a great volunteer option if you have some time; well organized, people are nice, and just a good, rewarding experience. Aside from during the holidays, considering checking if they need help (aside from financial) anytime during the year.

Yelp
For an organization that is supposed to support people, they only support a subset. Their CFO only gives lip service and does not follow though with promises.

Yelp
*This review is for the Tuesday night volunteer shift at the Galloway St location* In my opinion, Philabundance is one of the best non profits around. What they do is work to reduce food insecurity within the Philadelphia region. One of the ways they do this is with the volunteer program on Tuesday night from 6 to 830 pm. At this particular location, large quantities of donated food is sorted out and packaged in smaller boxes to be donated to individual food banks around the region. Each night, there is a specific project that will completed. What I like about Philabundance (and what you may like if you are looking for a volunteer program to get involved with) is that each night there is one single project to be completed. You really feel like you make a difference and are actually helping needy people to get access to healthy food. Please visit the Philabundance website for more information on this volunteer program, as well as many others they offer at their various locations.

Yelp
It is an excellent non-profit and place to volunteer. They do help fight hunger in the area. However, if you are purchasing food from them to give out to others, expect them to be difficult to work with. They will become involved in things with your organization and telling you what to do or not do that have nothing to do with food distribution.

Yelp
I am a huge supporter of Philabundance as well as other food-related charitable organizations in Philadelphia and NYC. Philabundance works with schools, businesses, corporations and community groups to gather and distribute non-perishable food for those who need it. Learn more - and support Philabundance!

Yelp
Philabundance has their stuff together. They did a great job at setting us up so we could just "go" and get the most out of our volunteer hours. They have a wonderful staff and quite a few of them are interesting characters. I have always been a big believer in Philabundance's mission, but after spending the day volunteering, I have bought in to their cause even more. Donate food or time or both and contribute to this wonderful city of ours.
