Stopped in on a Sunday morning around 10:30ish and had to wait 7ish minutes before we were seated. But that gave us time to figure out what we wanted to order. Coffee was strong, table clean, and fast service. Ordered chicken fried steak and they had it on the table in under 10 minutes. I can’t find anything to complain about the place. Will be back if we are in the area.

Google
The atmosphere was pleasant and the staff friendly. The shakes were flavorful and very tasty. The burgers were juicy and had a good seasoning to them. The bun was toasted giving them a nice crunch. The fries were very good. They were crispy! The salad was fresh and not slimy. ***There is a small parking lot and on street parking that is metered so if you come to the diner, make sure you have quarters. I definitely a place I will stop again in the future when passing through.

Google
What an incredible find for Sunday brunch!! The server was amazing! Highly recommend asking for a side of peanut butter fluff to dip your toast in- creative and delicious! The biscuits and gravy were top notch. Very full flavored and if you like a bit of sage in your sausage gravy this is the one to hit. The hollandaise sauce is definitely made from scratch and not from a packet. Velvety smooth And don't miss out on a milkshake perfect for sharing and they will split the extra into a second goblet Don't ignore the hype. It's really amazing!

Google
Great service. Had to wait 15-20 minutes to be seated Parking is hard to find. Pancakes with added banana Corned beef hash plate. Asked for over medium eggs got well-done eggs. No running yoke.

In town for a day trip and this is a must stop. Cute diner downtown. Your classic diner. Walk in and welcomed by a big simple and very friendly staff. Sat down right away. Ended up having the Thursday special, homemade chicken salad sandwich on whole wheat. Amazing.

Google
Phillips Avenue Diner — you’ve done it again! Fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon, and eggs cooked just right — this plate was pure breakfast happiness. Prices were solid, service was quick and friendly, and the syrup-to-pancake ratio? Perfect. Phillips Avenue Diner never disappoints — 10/10 would breakfast again! 🥞🥓☕

Google
I got the bacon mac 'n cheese with chicken. The noodles tasted fine, but seemed like they definitely weren't fresh; like noodles that had been out for a while already. Still, the food was good and the service acceptable. A nice little treat in downtown Sioux Falls.

Google
I really loved the atmosphere here. It definitely has the old time diner atmosphere right in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls. They even have a counter service. We had the chicken fried steak and eggs and the "spicy G" burger. Both were good. Service was friendly.

Yelp
Service/Ambiance: The second you walk in, you know you're getting an authentic "diner" experience. The 50's style decor with chrome everywhere is really captivating. Our waiter was fantastic, it really complemented the entire experience. Food: Spot on! My daughter started by ordering a strawberry cheesecake milkshake. It was one of the most beautiful looking milkshakes I have ever seen. OMG, I took one drink and honestly felt guilty. You have one drink and instantly know it's a guilty pleasure. I ordered a full breakfast meal for lunch, eggs, hash browns and sausage was cooked expertly. Now here is where it gets interesting. My wife ordered grilled cheese and tomato bisque. When she started eating the bisque, she had a hard time describing it other than "it's funky". In this case, we use "funky" in the most positive way. It was kind of chunky with chunks of tomato and PICKLES, while having some subtle notes resembling chili. It was the one very unexpected thing our family ordered, but it was absolutely delicious and has me contemplating my own twists on tomato soup in the future.

Yelp
There's something about a diner. I just have a fondness for them. When my friends and I were in Sioux Falls, SD we decided to stop for lunch at the Phillips Avenue Diner. The diner was fast, clean, and super efficient. It was also super busy so I was really impressed with how quickly were seated and at the prompt service we received. I got a chicken sandwich that was really tasty and the sweet potato fries were amazing! We all enjoyed our food and talked about how delicious it was. They also had malts and shakes. I did order a shake, but completely forgot to take a picture of it. I *may* have been a little to excited about it. It was so good!

Brian P.

Yelp
It was Sunday during lunch and yes they were busy. But that alone shouldn't be an excuse for poor service. I sat at the counter and still had to wait a significant amount of time before I had to ask for a menu. Once my food was cooked I had to sit and look at it in the warming window until someone finally decided to bring it to me. Food was average. I have eaten at better diners and worse

Yelp
Remains one of our favorite places! I tried a bite of the chicken fried steak because Sean felt compelled to share & it was amazing! My salad was fresh and tasty! The service is so friendly and the vibe remains warm. We will return! Our booth neighbor had the jambalaya - he seemed pleased. I'll try that next time! Thank you again!

Yelp
4 stars because sometimes it feels like a 5 and sometimes like a 3 so we're meeting in the middle. Having said that, we do find ourselves venturing back here every time we're in Sioux Falls so clearly we feel good about it. Service is always brisk and friendly. They don't linger long at your table but you also never have to wait long for them to arrive or to bring your drinks and food. Things are always moving here, without ever feeling rushed. Kind of like a diner should be, now that I think about it. Ambience is old school diner in an old streetcar. Cute and simple. The food also seems like old school diner: simple and good. Almost nothing here is fancy, but almost everything here is what you'd expect if you conjured up a good diner experience in your mind. It's old faithful somehow.

Yelp
Great food and service and a wonderful server. Jess! Austin is super, too. Even his kid brother helps out. One our fave spots for a Saturday brekkie.

Yelp
Sat at the counter, staff couldn't be nicer! Great food and service - will be back! Bustling atmosphere because it's busy, but very organized energy!

Yelp
Good lord. BEST beef stroganoff I've ever had. And I'm picky. Good enough I felt compelled to write a review. Big chunks of beef that melted in my mouth. Scratch sauce which included just the right amount of sherry. I can't tell you how many times I've been let down by a place that just slaps some cream of mushroom soup on some egg noodles with some beef and sliced mushrooms and and called it beef stroganoff. That Sherry made the dish. It's almost a shame because that's probably all I'll ever get there every time I go. All the other food looked really good, and everyone around me ordered the chicken fingers, and I believe they were hand dipped in house. I might be wrong on that part, but everyone seem to be loving them. The ambience of the old diner was fun and the service was good and friendly. The place was clean. I had no complaints. Excuse the messy appearance of the plate as I had already stirred in Tabasco sauce. That's just how I like my beef stroganoff. I also opted do not have the sour cream which comes with it.

Yelp
I bounced back and forth between giving this place 1-or-2 stars and decided 2 would be appropriate given the following aspects of my 9:15AM weekday dining experience. For being the only person sitting at the bar initially, it took an unexpectedly long amount of time for me to even get greeted or asked what I wanted to drink. (Truthfully, the server didn't even ask what I wanted to drink--just if I was ready to order.) I ordered the "Classic Diner Breakfast", which at the time of this review was just over $13...a tad overpriced for the Midwest and given the quality of what was presented. The bacon was overcooked while my "extra crispy" hashbrowns were essentially a charred, mushy blanket of blandness. The scrambled eggs also looked like a half-forgotten-about omelet--not great. The sourdough toast was standard and buttered as expected. I appreciate that they are served with a side dish of grape and strawberry jam. What I found LEAST appetizing though, is that none of the kitchen staff appeared to be wearing hairnets even if their short hair extended longer than an inch. (I'm not sure what South Dakota's laws are around food safety but I found that relatively unappetizing.) The saving grace for this place was the pleasant conversation I had with a younger guy working up at the food bay, Mike. He was pretty quiet initially but ending up being very nice and essentially the only staff member that genuinely made an effort to ensure a positive dining experience. Aside from that, the decor was definitely old-timey and cutesy--what you would expect from an old school diner. The interior is well-lit and not too loud. There's music playing in the background as well, which is a nice touch. (It would have been much too quiet if not.) Overall, I don't think I'd bother with visiting this breakfast joint again. The food was priced for quality that was ultimately not delivered, and the service was as cold as the January temps. If you are starving or in a time crunch, Phillips Avenue Diner will at least hold you over until you have time to find a nicer dine-in experience.

Yelp
Cowboy omelette and pancakes were both overcooked. The pancake was dense, not fluffy. Fake maple syrup added to the lackluster experience. Nice diner car atmosphere though.

Yelp
What a cute diner inside and out! When you walk in, you're greeted with a smile, and the ambiance takes you a step back in time! Our server, Kelly, was really good! Every worker we saw was smiling wow, you don't see that very often! The place looked clean, too. My son and I ate here for brunch. He got the Sunrise Waffle ($12.00), one pancake ($3.00), and "The All Day The Vanilla Chilla" ($6.00), I got the Corn Beef Hash & Eggs ($14.00). The food was served with a smile, hot, and fresh. We would eat here again when back in Sioux Falls.

Yelp
We stopped by for brunch and was happy to see a AM for PM menu. Classic, homey and yummy comfort food. My English muffin wasn't overly buttered. My bacon was crispy, just like I ordered. And hash was as expected. I got a side of sausage gravy (not pictured) to dip my bacon and muffin in. Bomb! Sausage gravy ain't that great in CA so my expectation may be low. My bf order the chicken fried steak and loved it. I will say it's a bit in the smaller side, compared to what I see back home. He loved the mash potatoes and I tried a piece of his broccoli and it was well seasoned! If we didn't have breakfast plans for tomorrow I'd go here again! I want to share that we came here around 11 on a Saturday. I see mixed reviews but our service and food was great. No complaints here!
google avatar

Mia T.

Yelp
I absolutely love The Diner! I grew up here and it's such a comfort pick and I always make sure to stop in when I visit town. The service staff was extremely kind when I accidentally ordered a coffee without non-dairy milk they took it back and fixed it for me with no charge. It has a very nostalgic old diner feel inside and the food is just so amazing. One of the best local eateries out there. Keep doing what you're doing Diner!

Yelp
The food was pretty great, but the wait time is brutal during lunch time! The inside of the store has an old-timey diner atmosphere that reminds me of the Five and Diners in Phoenix. I kept things simple with a BLT and fries plus my first experience with cheese curds. I was quite impressed! They taste much better than they sound - sort of like tiny cheese sticks. My hubby chose a pancake breakfast with sausage. He wasn't too fond of the sausage. I didn't taste them so I can't really comment on them myself. I'm not much of a sausage fan. Service was not too bad considering how busy it was, but we did have to wait on drink refills, and it took a bit to get things from the kitchen. We'll be back to try some other dishes, but we'll make sure not to come during lunch again! Way too popular at that time!

Yelp
A Sioux Falls classic in the heart of downtown. Fun spins on standard diner fare. The Spicy G burger is a favorite. Don't forget to get a shake!
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
This is a nice clean diner and the staff is always friendly. Ive been here a handful of times and always like it. Today I had to try their chicken & waffle, but while waiting we ordered some cheese curds. Their cheese curds were really good! The batter is really thin, crisp and has a nice seasoning on them. I recommend the cheese curds. They are addicting. So i figured with the batter of the cheese curds so tasty the chicken waffle meal would be just as good. I was correct. They use chicken tenders on the waffle, but they were not small little pieces, so I was ok with that. The tenders had a little thicker breading but with the same delicious taste as the curds. The waffle was crisp and delicious. The item is served with a pecan soft butter and vanilla infused maple syrup. This was a tasty dish that I will order again. Dont pass on the chicken & waffles. So then I had to try the Elvis shake because I am a fan of banana ice cream. This shake i believe is vanilla ice cream with fresh bananas thrown in the blender to get mixed in. Then there is peanut butter and some honey too. This was a tasty shake that i will definitely order again.

William L.

Yelp
First time here. Food was good, old fashioned dinner food. Crowded but wait was worth it. Service was very good. Four stars only because it was regular dinner menu nothing unusual. We had breakfast but the sandwiches and meals look very good.

Yelp
There's nothing anyone can love more than coming to a small town even though I would argue Sioux Falls is far from a small town but compared to my home city of Los Angeles... I think you get the point I love driving around the city but the first place I found to have breakfast was this diner I thought everybody incredibly polite both my waiters for the nicest people ever met in your life and the music that they played was absolutely hilarious I felt like jumping up and singing like that dude from risky business... Oh yeah his name is Tom Cruise only I would've worn pants. The breakfast menu and the ceiling is incredible I found myself very comfortable in ordering the farmers scramble I got it in less than six minutes and it was delicious but the portions are much larger so I had to take it home and I enjoyed it two hours later and it tasted just as good... I can't recommend this place enough I want to go back tomorrow before I leave and see what their pies are like.
google avatar

Steven F.

Yelp
Service was lack luster at best and the food was a let down as well. Took us 30 minutes to get served our beverage's, which were refilled despite trying to flag down the non-existent staff, at least on our side of the diner. I ordered a Turkey BLAT and the Turkey was almost nonexistent, sliced so thin and so little served that I would not recommend.
google avatar

Esther S.

Yelp
EXCELLENT traditional breakfast fare is what I chose. The Broncho omelette (already gluten-free) without cheese (b/c I'm also dairy-free) was delicious. The hashbrowns and the fruit were good as well. The server was delightful! The place is clean and well-kept.

Alyssa S.

Yelp
This was so good. Delicious food. Great service. And some fun Valentine's Day specials.

Mark E.

Yelp
Found the diner on Yelp and decided to check it out. Love the food, service, and vintage look. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Really good old school American diner food. They had so many amazing things on the menu it was hard to pick what I wanted. For starters I wanted to go with old school fish and chips along with some other deep fried sides. I settled on the more traditional Cobb salad it was absolutely amazing. I also had a bowl of their tomato bisque soup. I absolutely love a good tomato soup and theirs was to die for. My only suggestion was slightly larger portion and maybe serve it with a piece of bread instead of crackers. The shakes were made by hand and very large most of them took up two cups topped with whipped cream and a cherry what's not to love. They have free parking in the background and the staff was absolutely there to help with anything you needed. We had a group of 12 and they don't take reservations but they were able to quickly serve us and see our whole table the people ranging from 65 to 5 years old. Good place to check out for a group meeting business group or family dinner when you're in South Dakota.

Donnie C.

Yelp
The food was WONDERFUL! The service was DELIGHTFUL! It was a perfect day to enjoy eating in there outdoor section (not many of those to choose from). Honestly the best chocolate malt I've ever had. I'm probably eating there as my again today!
google avatar

Donato D.

Yelp
we sat at the counter. While the food was decent, and the guys in the kitchen were working like a machine, very efficient. The main guy in the center touched every piece of toast with his bare hands, no gloves. so every single person in the restaurant got to sample his DNA. I skipped eating the toast. if it wasn't hot or cooked, his hands were on it. not sure of the laws in South Dakota, but this is a no no in most states.

Camille H.

Yelp
I'm torn about this review bc I'm not sure that it is a fair review. We read the Yelp reviews & went bc of what we read. The menu has changed!!! So all the dishes we were interested in are NOT on the CURRENT menu. We stayed & I tried the poutine bc I've never had it. It had pulled pork on it that was very salty but good flavor. I'm not a gravy fan but, the brown gravy was very good. There were about 6 cheese curds on the whole dish. It was good but I've checked this box. I'll let the poutine experts take it from here. I also had the rueben toasted hard. It was chopped meat with good flavor. I have had better. I think this diner probably plays to its strengths in the breakfast department. I'd go back but, for breakfast items. Rueben, poutine, soft drink $ 27.00
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
So, we probably should've taken it as a warning that our waiter asked if we wanted to keep the ranch that came with our cheese curds. Kind of a cute place with nice patio seating, but the food overall was pretty middling. The exception was the chicken fried steak, which isn't for everyone, but was pretty well done. The meatloaf was fine, and will work if you really need meatloaf, but overall was pretty undifferentiated. The chicken quesadilla was a train wreck, flavorless with chewy, with oversized chunks of meat. (Where did all those positive reviews of the quesadillas come from?) Ranch is not something you'd typically put on a quesadilla, but in hindsight it would've been nice to have for them. The frozen lemonade kind of tasted like an Icee, but sad. And the cheese curds we mentioned? They were pretty grim, too, bland with no crunch. A neighboring table got a bunch of burgers, and in hindsight I wish we had tried them. They looked pretty competent. Dinner without tip was around $70 for a party of three.
google avatar

Kelsey S.

Yelp
Oh my gosh! This is exactly what we didn't know we needed! This little diner has so much history. Apparently it's been around almost as long as the town itself. When you walk inside you feel as though you've been transported back in time when life was just a bit easier. Their menu is EXTENSIVE, so I honestly didn't know if I was making the right call with the breakfast sandwich, but it was INCREDIBLE! If I could eat that every day, I'd be happy! I might have a heart attack from the bacon build up, but it'd be worth it. I can't recommend Phillips enough!

Brannon M.

Yelp
Cool looking place. Extremely busy. Staff sets false expectations with wait times and food ticket times. Also, server took my order only to come back 10-15 minutes later to inform me they cannot make the food. A spinach and tomato omelette is easy to make with a menu that serves salads and other omelettes. Sad excuse of service.
google avatar

Doug B.

Yelp
This was a good place to stop after a long day of driving. There's a great interior with plenty to keep you entertained and occupied. The food was good! We had the Frisco Melt and a chicken dish. Both were good and we left happy. The only downer was our server, who acted like he had plenty of better things to do. We had to wait awhile for water, and he did not check up on us after food was served. Hopefully it was just an off night for him, because it seemed like everyone else was feeling good!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
my dad and I were coming through town for a day; this diner came recommended. The food and atmosphere were great! my dad and I both ordered the corned hash and shared the fried pickles. our waiter was also super helpful, and checked in on us regularly. I drink a ton of water and he always made sure I had a full glass. I'd recommend this place to anyone visiting town.

Yelp
Thanks to the wonderful help of Yelp, my husband and I found a great new spot to eat in Sioux Falls. Hubby got the ruben sandwich and fries. I got the chicken strip melt and fries. Both were excellent and the fries, even being the typical McDonald's lookin' fries, were delicious. I reeeeeally loved the ranch dressing. I assume it's made in-house. Our waitress was great and admitted to us she forgot to ring our food in, so she offered us a free milkshake to make up for the longe wait. Hubby picked out an Oreo shake and he exclaimed it was possibly the best milkshake he's ever had. I got a mocha and that was one of the best mochas I've ever had. (Adding a little of the whipped cream from the milkshake to my coffee was a GREAT idea!) Our waitress was great, the place is adorable, and it's located in a great place smack dab in the middle of downtown. Bathrooms were clean, outdoor seating was available (TOO hot today for that!) and there is a bar area to sit at. Place does serve alcohol. I'll definitely be coming back to this place!
google avatar

Maggie D.

Yelp
The food was great, quick service, kid/family friendly, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Highly recommend - lunch, dinner, or breakfast!
google avatar

Yelp
I I'll never eat here, EVER. Rude management. walked in at 1:50pm and was told by the manager "I'm sorry we're closed at 2:00." I told him all we want is desert. No I'm sorry we're closed. Great food but terrible service. Be forewarned.

Dave H.

Yelp
We found this place by accident and we were very impressed!! We were seated right away and the waiter came right over got us drinks and menu's. As soon as he saw us put our menus down he came right over and took our orders. The food portions were large and the food was delicious!! It was a clean place with outstanding service and food! Highly recommend....

Yelp
Once again Yelp did not lead us wrong. We arrived at Phillips around 9:30 on a beautiful Saturday morning. Free street parking since it was the weekend. Short wait for a table for 2 maybe 20 minutes max. The hostess was friendly as was our waiter Kelly. We ordered coffee, chocolate milk and the two, two, two. Which is a combination of 2 Eggs, 2 pancakes and 2 of your choice bacon or sausage. Delivered to our table hot in about 10 minutes. The diner was full so the kitchen must have been running smoothly. Everything was good and I give Phillips extra points for the cleanliness, service and nostalgia. If you like good food served by friendly people go here! Oh and the prices are very reasonable!
google avatar

Vicki K.

Yelp
Friendly staff and good food. I got a grilled chicken sandwich. They kept my coffee cup full.

Yelp
The food was delicious and great quality. The staff is wonderful as well. Everything is clean and tidy as well. Great place to bring the family.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat at are Diners. So while in the downtown, I stopped by this Diner. Old school feel to it. We sat down and ordered the Poutine appetizer, the Prime Rib sandwich and the Chicken Fried steak. All the food was really good. Gravy was made from scratch. Sweet potatoe fries were good. The appetizers are maybe overpriced but I will definitely come back if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Trent E.

Yelp
I went for the downtown Sioux Falls burger battle. The peanut butter and jelly burger was creative but the burger itself was over cooked and dry. A plus for trying something outside the box but poor execution.
google avatar

Charla H.

Yelp
This is our second time visiting and what brought us back is the early opening hours, the location, the ambiance of the lovely outdoor seating, the excellent service, and the awesome eats! We had a great time, happy they accommodated our group of 11 quickly and with what seemed like ease! The Elvis Waffle looked and tasted like a work of art; I'm definitely ordering that next year when we visit South Dakota again. I had the Spinach & Tomato Omelette and it was tasty; loved the fact they had sourdough as a bread option (I snagged my sister's as she's allergic to gluten). Thank you and we'll see you next summer!

Yelp
First of all, this place is quick! It was lunchtime and the place was busy, so I plugged my meter for an hour. Could have saved some cold hard cash and only went with 30 mins!! Although the service was quick and very attentive, it wasn't the friendliest diner I've ever been in (no where near unfriendly however). Just no smiles or love in general! I have to say I was a little surprised with the small breakfast selection, since this is a diner and it's open for breakfast. Kinda wanted breakfast, but opted for the Rueben and Fries instead. Both were great. Add on an iced tea and the total was just over $14 without tip. The restaurant itself is pretty cool looking, and is in a fun location. This downtown is worth a walk, just to look at all the sculptures and shops. The diner fits the scene well.
google avatar

Alison C.

Yelp
Very cute and welcoming diner! Our server Dane was attentive and personable. I got the breakfast burrito which had wonderful flavor and added on some cholula. They also serve mimosas and a few other cocktails. When I'm back in Sioux Falls, I will definitely stop by again!

Cindy M.

Yelp
I always enjoy the Diner's outside patio in downtown SF. The service and food is good. Such a fun lunch spot with my girl friends. No complaints.

Andrew S.

Yelp
Received Hash blacks instead of hash browns. See photo. Requested replacement from one staffer, then another came buy and I still had the hash blacks in front of me, yet she asked if I'm doing all right here? Overrated and overpriced. Very disappointing food and service.

Yelp
Phillips Avenue Diner is a very good Breakfast spot. Food is fresh and very good. The staff is super helpful and nice. Your never wondering where the waitress or waiter is. They are on top of it. Chicken fried steak is very good. Biscuits and gravy are very good. Apparently this place caught fire and was shut down for 3 months. It's open and packed this Saturday morning.

Randi S.

Yelp
I HAD A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS PLACE, and I was so excited to try it. Been wanting to check this place out for years and I finally did only to be let down. I wanted a turkey blt in a wrap instead of a sandwich and the waitress informed me they couldn't do that but could do the southwest chicken wrap instead and substitute the chicken for turkey but there'd be a upcharge. I said that was fine. She brings me my food in a timely matter only for it to be a plain blt wrap. When I asked her where the turkey was, she said I didn't order that. When she's the one who suggested what I should order and I agreed. She was very rude and didn't fix my order. I ended up not eating it, and she still made me pay. I'll never go there again, extremely let down ):

Yelp
Was looking for a fun and casual place for brunch in Sioux falls, and this place hit the mark! Bit of a wait but well worth it. This place is in downtown Sioux falls and a walk from everything, including our hotel which was perfect. I got the breakfast burrito with hollandaise sauce drizzled on top, and of course a couple of mimosas on the side. Burrito was very tasty with hashbrowns, eggs, peppers, and sausage inside. I slapped some hot sauce and sour cream on top as well. This burrito is pretty darn large, so definitely don't need a side with it. Service here was extremely friendly and fun! They also serve lunch which also looked tasty from their menu. Recommend if your visiting the area!!
