One of Philly’s Best Bagel Shops Is Expanding - Eater Philly

"The original in the family-run chain is the long-running South Street Philly Bagels, known for its “hot bagels” sign on Third Street just south of South. That one opened back in 1996." - Rachel Vigoda

I love this place. The staff is always so friendly and greet you with a smile and a cheerful hello when you walk through the door. The bagels are my favorite in Philly but, what sets them apart is their house made cream cheese! The veggie is my favorite but all of them are delicious. So many creative options. Oh! And if you are looking for a bagel that tastes like a fresh plate of pancakes…they have that too! So good.

Google
Can't say much for the menu because I get the same thing every time (everything bagel w/ vegan veggie cream cheese - so good). But the service here is amazing. I frequent this place and always look forward to the warm welcome and smiles when I walk in the door. Great people, great bagels.

Google
Small quaint, a few ladies occupied the high top counter outlined in hunter green. I grabbed a french toast bagel with Smore’s cream cheese and a latte. Bomb! With so many other options. I’ve been coming here for years.

Google
Outstanding Performance from food to options. There whole team is wonderful they make you feel welcome & yet deserve a reward for there hard work to making everybody breakfast on south st. Once again I’m glad you guys enjoy Hagann Dazz.

Google
Stopped by for a quick bagel and got the "everything" bagel with plain cream cheese. It was great! The customer service was awesome. He gave me a lot of cream cheese lol too much but can't complain really.

Google
some of the best bagels I’ve ever had! I am not too much of a fan of a savory bagel, I am definitely a fan of sweet bagels, and that is what I got from Philly bagel – South Street. I am particularly fond of the French toast, bagel, and the blueberry bagels. The jalapeño cheddar bagels, look amazing, just not my speed. But if you’re in the mood for a jalapeño and cheddar bagel, this is clearly the place. A nice toasted bagel with some Philadelphia cream cheese and some Wawa coffee and you’ll be all set for the day! Another member of my party got the Sammy, with pork roll, which received rave reviews.

Google
Everyone has their own likes and dislikes when it comes to bagels and spreads. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Thomas and I happen to enjoy a conversation with pleasant people. My family likes bagels. Philly bagels has a very good whitefish spread. It’s not super oily and just tastes fresh and they do put a sell by date, which I happen to like. There is a variety of bagels and spreads. I do recommend you try their whitefish spread.

Google
This place was tough to rate, the food was 4ish stars but I paid almost $7 for a sausage egg and cheese bagel sandwich that was good, but for that price it should've been a 5 star 'mother of all breakfast sandwiches'. I know food carts that serve a better sandwich for $3.50. If I remember correctly, they menu says $5 with your choice of meat but I'm not 100% sure. I guess you're mainly paying for the 'South Street' thing and the fact that bagels are made there. The other items seemed more reasonable, but I have to take a star away from my 4 star rating for the cost.

Yelp
Visited Philly and had a really satisfying bagel here! The service was amazing - they made sure to wear fresh gloves and clean the prep area for my dietary restrictions. The jalapeño cheese bagel was tasty & made really well (not too soft & not too hard). The jalapeño cream cheese was also safe for me (no onion & no garlic). My husband got the caprese and really enjoyed that as well. Definitely recommend - incredibly friendly service!

Yelp
Really good weekday bagel place! Not too busy on weekends either. Sandwiches are a good size and nicely fills. Bagels are not huge and it's also not super pricey :). Everyone working is also usually very nice. Good pick up spot for sure

Yelp
Sadly I was not impressed by this bagel shop. First ding was that they were out of ice at 9 am so I couldn't get an iced coffee. Second ding was the lack of seating - there was a super tall bar with very short chairs that made it impossible for my kids to reach the counter. There were bugs everywhere. I also was not a big fan of the bagel itself. It was too chewy and tasted like it had been sitting out for a long time. I've never complained about too much cream cheese, but this one had so much that I had to scrape off about half. It also was not very good cream cheese. It wasn't light and fluffy but thick and stodgy. Not my favorite.

Yelp
I ordered the turkey Cali, toasted. The bagel was missing sprouts, not toasted, barely any avocado and all turkey. I assumed the cheese would be melted and the bagel would have butter or something on it. We're visiting from out of town but super disappointed. We were also the only people in the shop when ordering so this wasn't rushed. I ended up just eating the turkey by itself and throwing the rest out.

Yelp
Their selection of bagels, cream cheese spreads and other tasty menu options are the best in Philly. I cannot go to South St without making a stop for my usual whole wheat everything bagel with lox cream cheese and tomato. The staff is friendly and go above and beyond to get your order out as quickly as possible. The other customers are cool too and I also seem to strike up a conversation while I wait for my order.

Yelp
This place is terrific. I lucked into this with Too Good To Go and this is now my go-to. I've been searching for a great neighborhood bagel place since coming to Pennsport. This place has it all: great friendly service and delicious bagels with that perfect bagel chew. They have the classics, but don't sleep on the French Toast bagel. So good.

Yelp
Quality bagels, perfectly cooked bacon, wonderful customer service. Order ahead makes for a quick pick-up.

Yelp
Tasty bagels, and very friendly service, this old style bagel emporium sells a nice variety, and they are very nice size, definitely not a boutique bagel. They are located very close to the 4th. Street Deli, and opened in 1996, they make a true water bagel. You can get any type of bagel sandwiches, from a lox, and cream cheese bagel to a Rueben, and everything in between. Give S S P B's a try, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Came in the morning to grab a few bagels. Place smelled amazing when I walked in. The display case with bagels had no labels on it. I had to ask the guy which each bagel was. I got 2 bagels. Cream cheese was sold separately. They had some great sounding flavors. I wanted apple raisin and my wife wanted jalapeño. I looked at the prices and it was 1.25 for ONE OUNCE! This was a coffee creamer size of cream cheese. They tried to upsell me on an 8oz tub of cream cheese for 5 dollars. I said it is for one bagel?! I ended up buying 2 ounces of apple raisin and 2 ounces of jalapeño. When I got home, it was barely enough cream cheese. I don't even know why they sell one ounce. It's just ridiculous and expensive. But whatever, the bagels were tasty. They're just stingy with the cream cheese.

Yelp
The egg and cheese was okay. The egg didn't have much seasoning even though I asked for salt and pepper. The bagel was pretty dense...kind of like it didn't get toasted. I tried the cold press coffee. It was pretty good!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm glad I ran into this little spot. The bagels are enormous and the choices are so tasty. They also serve coffee and have various types of sandwiches here but the portion sizes are quite generous!

Yelp
Best lox bagel I've ever had!! Service was super quick and the staff were amazing. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
RAINBOW. BAGELS! Sure they don't taste like rainbow, but the bagels are so cute! I opted for egg and cheese with vegi cream cheese on an everything bagel. The bagel was huge! And oh so delicious !! We ended up going to the coffee shop across to street to sit and enjoy our food as seating is very limited inside hence all the to go orders.

Anna R.

Yelp
10/10 bagels (also amazingly huge portions) and really wonderful staff, would definitely recommend the hot honey bagel with jalapeno cream cheese!
google avatar

Morgan F.

Yelp
Got the Lox Special on an everything bagel for breakfast. Bagel had a nice dense chew to it, which is a big win for my taste. Next time, I'd ask for some dill, but that's just my preference. Nice people working the counter. Great little hole in the wall for a quick breakfast bite, I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Good bagels. A tad dry but the cream cheese helped moisten it up a bit. Quiet place to have a breakfast.

Yelp
After calling a bunch of bagel shops one morning looking for gluten free bagels I found an awesome option at this spot... It was delicious, and so close to my home. I couldn't wait to go back! Flash forward a week or two and while walking by I decided to stop in and see if they had any gf bagels left. To my confusion everyone working said not only did they not have any gf bagels that day but they never carried gluten free bagels, despite the fact I was definitely served one a short time before. Not sure if they just got rid of them in that very short amount of time or what but it was very confusing... and I still don't know if they're a source for gluten free bagels or not.

Yelp
**Tofu-Cream Cheese Options Available!!!** I was super pressed for time and normally I go to another cafe for my bagels because they have more vegan options but today I went to South Street because of its location. I thought I was going to get the hummus but to my surprise that had tofu cream cheese options! Excited that I can now make this my go-to option. Ordered the Veggie Sammie on everything. I find it hard for bagel places to generally differentiate themselves or stand out but somehow South Street did it! The bagel was delicious. I think it was their combination of pickles and capers that provided the right flavor combo to have me say out loud, "yum." Another plus is they take credit cards ($5 minimum) but a nice differentiator in the area. Only feedback I'd give is to advertise or add tofu cream cheese to their main menu (it was only on a little sign up front) and to make their bagels just a smidge bigger. It was just a tad smaller than I would've liked - but that could also be a curse of it tasting so good

Matthew W.

Yelp
Just had the chicken salad bagel and it was disgusting and dirty. They did not clean the lettuce, which was dirty and wilted, and I felt sand/dirt in my mouth when eating. Tomato was also gross af. Go to The Bagel Place instead!
google avatar

Ilene M.

Yelp
Best bagels ever!! The perfect combination of crunchy and chewy. I won't eat any others.

Gen Y.

Yelp
Is this a joke? $3.75 for a bagel and this amount of strawberry cream cheese, $3 for a bagel and TWO plain cream cheese. This amount barely covered one half of my bagel. I paid more to throw out half of my breakfast. What I ate was delicious, but this is absurd. Was this a mistake? Did they forget to throw the other in the bag? Was there supposed to be two? That's the only reasonable excuse. I'm very disappointed (and hungry)
google avatar

Orly C.

Yelp
Grab a breakfast sandwich or a bagel and a container of their creamed cheese. Prices are really good considering the quality.
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
I really want to like this place, having just moved around the corner, but I'm annoyed at their "wait outside" policy. I went in today and ordered a toasted bagel with schmear and AFTER I had paid, they asked me to wait outside for it to be handed to me through the door. It was freezing cold, super windy and threatening to rain. There were zero other customers inside. I was fully masked. So the answer was no, absolutely not. If they want a policy where you wait outside for your order, they need to display that on the door so people can choose whether or not they are okay with it before making the transaction. There are reasonable accommodations during this horrendous pandemic, and asking someone to wait outside in the freezing wind when there are no other customers inside the store is not reasonable.
google avatar

Jaime H.

Yelp
I love this little spot. The staff is very friendly and always giving me their recommendations and different combos they've tried. Fair warning parking is usually a pain around here on weekends if you're coming from out of town but it's worth it if you can get a spot. Seating is a bit limited inside so don't expect to sit down to get here. I got the Cinnamon Raisin Bagel toasted with Apple Raisin cream cheese - it was so good almost tasted like a French toast brunch. We also got a pork-roll egg and cheese toasted on an everything bagel... can never go wrong with that. Their scallion cream cheese with Lox is perfect. Great place to get bulk orders of mixed bagel flavors & cream cheese if you're hosting a brunch or tailgate
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Got 2 bacon egg cheese bagels this morning. First time and it was great. Also picked up the Jewish apple pie on the counter.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
Pro-tip! Call ahead for pick-up! So many choices!! I chose an everything bagel with sausage, egg, and cheese...my only regret was not asking for hot sauce. The everything bagel was among the best I've had, and perfect balance of "everything" without being overwhelmingly seedy or strong. I was impressed with their many bagel options, sandwich combinations, and cream cheese spreads. I was super impressed with their Nitro coffee. The flavor was amazing! Didn't require cream or sugar to mask anything - it was so smooth. The place is small, but perfectly quaint, and the staff was fantastic. Great value, great taste. Perfect for a sunny breakfast stroll down South Street.
google avatar

Isabelle M.

Yelp
the BEST customer service. Just got home to my surprise HOT and FRESH everything bagel tucked under the bagel sandwich that I ordered.
google avatar

Suzanne A.

Yelp
These are the best bagels! There are lots of different flavors and sandwich options. We usually buy a bakers dozen to take home. You can also buy cream cheese spreads to go. They're a good size not too big not too small. They keep well in the freezer for a few weeks and in the fridge for a few days. The French Toast bagel is yummy and really tastes like French Toast. The blueberry is flavorful too. The cinnamon raisin is good but not a lot of raisins. Poppy seed and sesame seed are delicious with just the right amount of seeds. It's a small place just off of South Street. There are a few tables. A nice staff! Try to go early for the best selection. These bagels are so good and sell quick especially on weekends!
google avatar

Olivia E.

Yelp
This is the place to go if you're looking for authentic Philly bagels. They have a wide variety of bagels and toppings and spreads. No indoor or outdoor seating is available, but you can order online or call ahead. Masks are required when picking up and only a few people are allowed inside at a time. They get very busy, especially on the weekends, so it's important to place your order as early as possible. I've been here many times and it never ceases to impress. You definitely have to go!

Natania H.

Yelp
I ordered an everything bagel with whitefish and tomato, along with a hot chocolate made with whole milk. The sandwich didn't taste bad, but there wasnt much whitefish, the tomatoes weren't ripe (despite the picture, they were damn near white) and the hot chocolate was very bland. The total cost of my meal was $15+. Not to mention, they opened late, the place was dark, the bagel display was very dusty and they weren't very friendly. I won't be returning.

Arthur K.

Yelp
Online it says their open until 4pm I pay for parking 10$ walk to the philly bagels and they are closed ruined my plans for the day I planned this since last weekend you guys need to update your hours on maps because I just lost 10$ bucks when I'm nearly broke and wanted to take my girlfriend out somewhere nice because the shop in Jersey recommended you guys

Yelp
ATTENTION: Philly Bagels (any location) has the BEST iced coffee in the entire city of Philadelphia! I have no idea what they do to it, but it is so smooth and delicious, I usually get myself 2. I also don't hear anyone else talking about it so I need to make sure this isn't a secret anymore! Get their iced coffee, people! Anyways, I've been a customer here for 6+ years. The bagels are great. Lots of awesome flavors, my personal fave is the whole wheat everything. They recently added a whole bunch of vegan cream cheeses, which in addition to their regular cream cheese flavors are also great. They have a nice selection of sandwiches, personally I usually go for the tuna salad or bacon egg & cheese (SPK, of course!). Their veggie sammie is a nice treat too for something a little lighter - anything with capers is #dabomb. But if you're feeling something classic, get their toasted w/ butter - they always get the butter proportions correct (which is apparently difficult for most of the world! ha!) Expect to wait in a line on the weekends! Unfortunately they don't take call in orders on the weekends anymore but it's worth the wait.

Pat C.

Yelp
Great bagels. I got a lox and bagel sandwich which was great. I asked for extra cream cheese and that's what I received. Visited this shop twice during my visit. Took a dozen bagels back to Texas with me.
google avatar

Leann H.

Yelp
Mediocre bagels at best. I got the bacon egg and cheese on a jalapeño cheddar bagel. I asked if it came toasted and the woman at the counter responded, rather rudely, that it didn't and you had to ask for that. When I asked her what the difference was between whitefish salad and lox, and which was better, she said "I don't know, why're just different" with an attitude. The bagel wasn't toasted at all, rather heated up, and was really soft and mushy. Maybe it's a matter of preference, but I like hard bagels, not bagels like soft bread. The saving grace were the fillings. Lots of bacon, egg, and cheese. They also add pepper to the egg. I won't be back anytime soon. So many better places that treat you nicer.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
Guess I need to find a new bagel place. This was always my spot for ten years but the last two times I've gone, my toasted bagel was cold (how does that even happen) and the butter was caked on. Last time, I went back and they corrected it but it happened again today and I just can't go there again unfortunately.
google avatar

Taina E.

Yelp
This place really hits the spot. Anytime I am in the area in the morning, this is a must. Not to mention their coffee is just as yummy. I usually order the sesame bagel with bacon, egg, and cheese and an iced latter. Even if the line is long it goes pretty quick and definitely worth the wait.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Brought a group of 23 high school students to Philly and stayed nearby this hidden gem. Was pleasantly surprised with the variety for such a smaller place. Only a few benches to sit with no tables. They have a large variety of types of bagels, cream cheeses, sandwiches and very good coffee. Bagels are fresh made daily. Prices are decent and service was super friendly. I loved the lox sandwich and egg, ham and cheese on bagel. The place was clean and has been family owned and operated for generations. Great little place and highly recommended.
google avatar

Randol H.

Yelp
This has so far been the best bagel shop I've found in the area. I was a little disappointed that they had run out of a couple of the menu items but that's what I get for sleeping in and showing up around noon. This is pretty much my go to bagel place now. One thing that you absolutely must try is the tomato sauce if you are getting any kind of savor bagel item. It's a spicy romesco type sauce and is easily worth four times the 25 cent extra charge. I could eat the stuff with a spoon. The bagels and cream cheeses are all made in house so they will occasionally run short of things so be sure to show up early or call ahead! The menu is pretty well fixed, they have occasional specials but they aren't on a schedule - if they have it it'll be on the board. Of the items we tried the pastrami lox reuben was simply amazing and, as far as I've seen, unique to this particular bagelry. Highly recommended.

Nadia F.

Yelp
These bagels were nothing short of amazing! The place was clean; the staff was nice and although my food came out a little slow, they were extremely busy.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
This will be the shortest review I've written because I'm not wasting time or energy on a 1 STAR review. My husband stopped in to pick up a dozen bagels this morning to drop of to me for my staff at 6:40 a.m. He reported the only employee who was in the bakery assisting him was not personable and was impatient with poor customer service skills. When asked a couple questions, she appeared annoyed and dismissive. Really!? All this for 1 dozen bagels and 3 cream cheeses. Never returning. Poor customer service at anytime is unacceptable when a customer isn't being difficult, but at 6:40 in the morning? Too early to be negative and transferring that to customers. Unacceptable at any time.
google avatar

Alisha S.

Yelp
My place of choice when I'm craving a bagel! Their bagels are fresh and they have a huge selection of cream cheese, spreads, and toppings. My favorite is the whole wheat everything bagel with chive cream cheese. I always add lettuce, cucumber, and onions. The best part about this place is that the vegetables are fresh and crisp and they definitely do not skimp out on the cream cheese. They have decent coffee, accept cards ($5 minimum), and staff is friendly. My only complaint is that service can be a little slow. Still, South Street Philly Bagels is definitely worth checking out on a day when you're not in a rush.
google avatar

Melody W.

Yelp
Went here on a holiday morning, when the entirety of queens village was sold out of bagels... despite all that, I'm so thankful to have found this gem! I would urge any & everyone to do a side by side comparison against another bagel sandwich. It's just indescribably better! Come here when you're tired of wasting your time on stupid people. Maybe not for u if you're looking to sip coffee & free wifi for hours... can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
I was staying nearby while visiting Philly and stopped by for bagels early one morning. The staff was super friendly even though the store was still setting up and fresh bagels kept coming out every few minutes. We tried the plain and sesame bagels and they were great. There aren't tables at this store so we did a take out order for several people and everything was prepared correctly.
google avatar

Rakesh J.

Yelp
Ordered a bagel sandwich from here and they forgot the avocado and cheese, and it cost $10. Of course I didn't discover this critical error until I got home so I had to eat my dry bagel in disappointment.
google avatar

Leslie V.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and have zero complaints about this place. Bagels are very good and reasonably priced. Iced coffee is awesome too. The staff is pretty friendly too compared to some other bagel spots around the corner.
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
I used to love the bagels here, but quality has been awful the past few times I've bought bagels. They have been really dry, not chewy or moist like they used to be. I've been buying bagels on Sundays, so maybe it is a different baker on the weekends.
google avatar

Sydney L.

Yelp
South Street Bagels is convenient to the Queen Village area. The bagels are good, but very small compared to other Philly/NJ/NY bagel spots. They have a great variety of cream cheeses and spreads, and even a rainbow bagel for kiddies! They also had tofu "cream cheese"... perfect for our dairy free/Vegan friends. I opted for the whole wheat everything bagel with pesto cream cheese, and while well flavored, it was VERY SMALL. I liked the cream cheese though, it was a fun and different option that you don't typically see. I did thoroughly enjoy the iced coffee! It was strong and bold, which I appreciated. The service was also pretty quick and friendly. I wish the bagels were a little more robust.
google avatar

Esmahan A.

Yelp
The bagels were small and eh. I ended up getting a poppy bagel and my husband got a blueberry bagel. Their choices are numerous as their cream cheese spreads. But I found their bagels to be salty and not as good as knead in center city. But def better than Spread in rittenhouse.

Jamie B.

Yelp
Great bagels, and excellent service. All-around wonderful place that we are so lucky to have in our neighborhood.
