Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"A shaded patio with a playground is the draw at this ice house, though the kids also appreciate the hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries. A “parents’ recess” happy hour brings discounts on draft beer from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and other menu items like Frito pies and onion rings round out the menu for any adults at the table. There are two additional locations, which both have playscapes, on Burnet Road — brilliantly next to Amy’s Ice Cream — and North 183. Takeout orders can be placed online." - Erin Russell

Google
Phil’s has the best burgers, hands down. Perfect balance of flavor and texture. If you're in the area, it’s a must-try and I'd go with the 78704. Love their veggie patty option has well. The sliders are like 3 mini samples that definitely keep you full.

Google
The atmosphere here is very casual and a shared experience with Amy's ice cream. The burgers are always cooked to order and are large and juicy. I recommend the 78704 burger. Great lunch spot.

Michael

Google
It's a nice little family spot to grab hot food, ice cream and a play area for the kids.

Google
Amazing corn dog! The onion rings were my favorite. Super crunchy and homemade, just the way I like them. I am coming back to try their cheeseburger and fried chicken sandwich. Fantastic menu items, friendly staff, and speedy service. I also enjoyed the environment because the walls are floor to ceiling windows. Tons of natural light. Highly recommend!

Google
It is a nice place well located, friendly staff, the burger selection was good I definitely need to come back and try them all!! The one I ordered it was really good, the bread and meat are fresh and good flavor! And of course the fries were delicious I like the decoration and the atmosphere overall it’s relaxing, the only thing is that the vintage photo machine was out of order and would definitely be nice to take a picture as a souvenir... well I guess next time i visit Austin will swing by

I'm sad to say I had to make the decision to never go back to Phil's Ice house. I ordered through door dash, the burger was 'ok' but I was really looking forward to some delicious onion rings. But sometime between last fall (my first visit to this location) and last night, they have lost the ability to make anything that remotely resembles onion rings. What was delivered to me was the equivalent of 4-5 golf ball sized fried batter balls, inedible. I returned the order today, expecting maybe they had really messed up, but the staff informed me that is what they now serve as "onion rings" offered me a new order , or maybe some fries- which I declined. The person at the counter defended the condition by saying they are "hand made" . If you are in the mood for some really good "hand made" onion rings, better go to Wholly Cow.

Google
Phil's Icehouse is a great place to grab a booth or table, hang out, and have a delicious burger. I normally build my own burger. Definitely try out their non-burger options too! They're equally delicious. Make the short walk next door to Amy's and grab a small treat after your meal!

Google
Have to say it was a dam fine tasty burger. Staff are friendly, place is easy to find and has parking outside. Very children friendly with climbing frame outside. Food portions are generous, you shouldn't be leaving hungry, recommended the sweat potato fries. Will likely be back again soon.

Yelp
My family decided to order and pick up Phil's Ice House for dinner. My husband placed the order online. He was given an approximate pickup up time for when the order would be ready. We went to pick it up. It was very visible from the road. We found parking and my husband went in to pick up our order. It was quick. I'm not sure about the ambiance as I didn't go inside. I ordered the 78750 which is a burger with Swiss cheese, fried onion rings and bacon on top of mayo, lettuce, and tomato on a sourdough bun. I changed it a little by switching the meat to chicken, removing the cheese, adding avocado, and a chipotle mayo instead of regular mayo on a wheat bun. They got my order correct, the chicken was tender and you could taste the grilled flavor, the fried onion rings were kind of soggy because of all the ingredients, the bacon was tasty, the avocado, tomato, and lettuce could have been fresher, and the chipotle mayo added a little flavor but not much. I really liked the grilled flavor of the chicken and the bacon. As a side I ordered the half onion rings and half fries. The onion rings were very battered, semi crispy, and salty but they were good. The fries were thick and semi crispy. Both tasted decent with ketchup. Overall it was a good experience and an easy quick way to order and pick up tasty burgers or chicken sandwiches.

Yelp
Great burgers, I love all the fun varieties. I got the violet crown which was a nice balance of blue cheese and grilled onions with my veggie patty. Only weird thing was my bottom bun felt and tasted super doughy like it was uncooked. Top bun was fine, which was weird. I like the mike of fries you can get too.

Yelp
Great food, maybe a bit underrated. Great location and great place to stop with the family.

Yelp
Phil's Icehouse is probably the first burger place I've ever been to that does all their buns with sourdough, and I think that's a fantastic idea! We came in on a late Friday night, service was quick and friendly. The burgers were so juicy and flavorful with all the fresh ingredients they have to offer. But what stood out was the flavor profile here, the sourdough buns were a great combination to their toppings. They had a nice sweet savory flavor that was simply addicting, it's difficult to explain, but definitely a must try. Another thing that's unique about this place is that they offer a burger flight, great for not having to dedicate yourself to a single burger, and instead you get to try a variety!

Yelp
This location is inside Amy's ice cream but the partnership is a match made in heaven. Who doesn't want a great burger and ice cream Great service and they are super fast. My co-workers recommended this place so I slid in there solo just to have my own natural reaction untainted. So many options on burgers and you can get a mixture of regular and sweet potato fries. That's when i knew it was a good time waiting for me. I ordered the Brentwood cuz I like a little piggy with my cow. This burger was juicy, flavorful and all mine without sharing. I couldn't finish the entire meal, that's how generous of the portions are. Great sit down dine vibe and a playground for the kiddos if they come with you. Treat yourself

Yelp
Cleanliness and service have gone down since the last time I came four years ago. My allergies were so bad inside the restaurant that I had to eat outside in the cold. I'm allergic to dust. The cashier got my order wrong and wanted to charge me a second transaction until I protested his absent mindedness. I specifically told him the first time that I wanted a gluten-free burger. I double-checked with him while they were cooking my order, and he said no and tried to blame it on me. Absolutely not! If I had gotten into gluten, I would have had the runs. Then he tried to charge me $1.50 for the gluten-free bun, which he had forgotten until I got fed up and said I wanted to cancel the entire order for a refund due to his mistake. He relented and didn't charge a second transaction. Then he said, "I forgot to ask if you wanted it for here or to go." I responded, "You didn't forgot, and I already told you it's for here." I regret tipping 15% to a forgetful cashier. Plus, the burger was average at best. I'm not coming back here again. This restaurant is on the decline.

Yelp
Been going here for years, always had good burgers until recently. Last Sunday, the meat was so over cooked that it was like a hockey puck, should have sent it back. The place seems to be run by teenagers who haven't been trained on how to grill a good burger. This place is not cheap and I expected better quality. Not sure I'll be going back.

Yelp
Phil's Ice House serves up consistently good burgers with crisp lettuce, fresh tomatoes, and just about anything else you want. Service is efficient, 4 stars because our order was all wrong! Fries vs onion rings, sauce, pickles, a number of items were wrong with each of our 4 orders!
google avatar

Rachael Y.

Yelp
They got our order wrong twice. Playground was not Maintained Food was horrible Bathrooms were very nasty

Yelp
I've been going to Phil's for years but only recently started leaving Yelp reviews, so figured I'd include new and repeat places. I got the 78704 burger but instead of hamburger meat, I subbed grilled chicken. I got no grilled onions and no jalapeños. It comes with fries and you can pick regular, sweet potato, or mixed. The bread is sweet but totally elevates the sandwich. I like that if you aren't in the mood for a burger, you can choose grilled chicken, turkey, veggie, or fish as your meat, so there are options for vegetarians and pescatarians too. Phil's is a local Austin chain from the same couple that started Amy's ice cream- which is why the locations have an Amy's ice cream inside. I don't love chain restaurants, but if it started in Austin, I'm still supporting local, which is okay by me.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Great local spot. Mini burgers and onion rings were delicious. Very kid friendly. Attached to Amy's ice cream. They also had my favorite local brew Zilker Icy Boys.
google avatar

Mike E.

Yelp
Food: 5/5 Phil's does "gourmet" burgers the right way. The burgers are super rich, fries are crispy, and corn dogs comparable to Fletcher's. Service: 5/5 Incredibly fast and friendly service. Environment: 5/5 Plenty of seating and outdoor area shared with Amy's Icecream.

Yelp
Unfortunately the customer service here was terrible. The gentleman who took our order was unhelpful when asking questions about the menu even though it was our first time here. Just brushed it off but eventually the lady at the counter was also extremely rude to us for inquiring about the wait time for a simple order we placed for a homeless gentleman. We only ordered the basic burger for him, nothing complicated. If we are spending money at this establishment all we hope for in return is basic mutual respect as we try to provide to restaurant and service workers everywhere we go. We wish we could support a local Austin business but unfortunately this experience with the lady at the counter in particular was just unlike any other experience we have ever had and we will not come back to this establishment.

Yelp
Phil's gets the job done! It's quick and affordable, a decent parking situation, and indoor/outdoor seating. The food is as expected but I think the fries could have been a bit better but other than that, great stuff!
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
Burgers and buns are always on point! I've tried several different ones and they've all been delicious. The green bean fries are amazing with their ranch! I've been numerous times and they never disappoint.

Yelp
when I visit Austin I know before I head back home I need to stop at phil's. their cheeseburgers are amazing. they have a selection of different american foods. all very delicious. I love their sourdough burger buns. the potato fries are a nice addition. also best part is if you want dessert Amy's ice cream in inside the same building! I like the mexican vanilla ice cream, I add kit kats. try out Phil's! great for family and kids since they have a patio and awesome playground.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
Alright so a fire burger, cold beer and Amy's ice cream. how can you not like this place? Perfect for the kids with the Playground outside; great addition to make this a great family spot.

Noel K.

Yelp
Had the 78704 veggie burger tonight. The bun tasted uncooked and the burger literally fell apart when I picked it up with two hands. It was crammed with so much stuff that it was just a clump of goo. Awful. We also had the basket of chicken tenders, they were bad. The chicken was like rubber, even difficult to bite into. In all, a family-friendly place with sub-par "American" crap food. I should've known better.

Amie W.

Yelp
Yum! Came to Phil's since we couldn't get parking at The Picnic, but boy, lucky us! The chicken sandwich was excellent, fish sandwich crispy goodness, and veggie burger oh so good. Best part was the bun, which was super yummy and usually not worth the gluten. These buns were soooo worth it! Yep, my kinda joint. Add in beer and ice cream? Ima live here now. Yep. Nice people and comfy seating too. Thanks Phil's! You rocked tonight!
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
Yummmmm! This is a very kid friendly restaurant. Theres Amy's icecream next door and a pretty decent sized playground. Theres both indoor and outdoor dining. Everything was delicious and very easy to eat. We didn't make the typical burger mess and enjoyed the environment

Johnny V.

Yelp
Best burger I've had since moving to Austin 2 years ago. Top notched I had this through Uber eats too it was the best!

Joe S.

Yelp
The burger I had was delicious. I don't recall the name, but it had grilled onions, jalapeños,pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo. Delicious. Go

Allison R.

Yelp
Had a burger brought to me. We only live 10 minutes away. By the time the burger got to me, the bottom bun was so soggy it was falling apart, mushy and overall inedible. Fries were good.
google avatar

Victoria K.

Yelp
We're not from Austin but we're here on vaca and decided to stop at Phil's after going to the vintage shop across the street. The burgers are big and everything was absolutely delicious, the buns are buttery and fluffy and holds the burger well. We all got burgers with the mixed basket. They also have a cute ice cream shop in the same building but we were all too full. Highly recommend for a great burger.
google avatar

Jane O.

Yelp
Had The Brentwood delivered. Best bacon cheeseburger I've had in forever! Melted in my mouth! Great flavor and size! Comes with nice mix of sweet potato and regular fries. I opened my can of Coke and enjoyed my feast.
google avatar

Audrey C.

Yelp
Soooo goood!!! It was our first time coming, and the burgers were actually 10/10. We enjoyed our meal, the atmosphere is alittle much with the kids but! None the less, the area is great, clean and the food was the best part!

Yelp
I was excited because my colleagues said they had GF buns; which meant I wouldn't be eating a chicken cutlet wrapped in lettuce. I ordered the Balcones Chicken Jack minus the cheese and on a GF bun. I have Celiac's Disease not an allergy, so it is imperative I do not have wheat in my system. I knew that the fries would be fried in the same oil as items with wheat breading but I'm not that sensitive and would be OK. I was so excited when the sandwich arrived. I had some vegan cheese to top it off with, so I heated it up some so it melted and dug in! It was delicious! I was so happy to find a good resto that carried GF options. Segue to 24 hours later. I am having a wheat reaction. The rash associated with Celiac's has broken out on my arms for the first time 5 years and to be sensitive to all reading this, everything I eat is going through me. It takes about 4-6 weeks for the villi in my intestines to recover from the wheat. I don't know how long it will take for the rash to go away. It's similar to chicken pox in looks and how badly it itches. Please train your staff to understand and take Celiac's Disease and all food allergies seriously. They should all ahve their food handlers certificates and know better. I've worked in food service and this would have NEVER happened in any of our establishments.

Yelp
The people at Phil's Ice House were kind enough to send me a gift card after I had a less than stellar experience at a different location and I wish I could say the free price tag made it taste better but it just didn't. First off, I could visually see some flakes of salt on the sweet potato fries but I couldn't taste any at all which is unfortunate and left me not overly happy with the fries. Next I ordered the 78756 burger which comes with a jalapeño cheese bun which I hoped would add a bit of spice to the burger which it did not. The bun was also strangely too big for the Patty (which was turkey not beef) so at the end I had a few bites left of just bun and this was without a doubt the most wet burger I've ever had. The Compote was literally dripping off it and the flavor I noticed the most was the mayo. Like I said in the previous review I'm not a big burger person but I'm sad to report I've definitely had better. I'll come back to try something that's not a burger in the hopes that that's better (and because there's still money on this gift card). I still don't recommend coming here but there were a number of people in the restaurant so it could just be me.

Yelp
I love Phil and his Ice House. The burgers are really freaking good. I always get the Brentwood and it never disappoints. I'm not sure what else anyone expects from this place. It delivers on a quality burger at a reasonable price and if you have kids, it's got a great outdoor area for them to play. 4 beers on tap and some can beer options as well. Amy's ice cream is in the same building but that's a different review. Overall I have never had a bad experience and even if I did I'm sure they would make it right and since I've had so many great experiences, I would give them grace. Glad they are still cooking up wonderful burgers in a laid back atmosphere.
google avatar

Krista L.

Yelp
Deeelicious! Got the one that has three sliders to taste a variety. The 78704 was my favorite. Doesn't hurt that there is an Amy's in here too :P

E-E M.

Yelp
This place knows how to make a fantastic burger!! Very much worthy of my gas all the way to Austin . Meat cooked to perfection and fries are on point . Can wait to try other items on their menu. Kids portions are perfect. Must try if you want delicious food!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Phil's is a staple in Austin. They do burgers well. Everything is always good, hot, and tasty. Everything was taken care of. Very sparse inside and outside due to all this COVID stuff, but they did their part in this well. Everyone was masked appropriately and tables were spaced out well. If you're an ice cream lover, Amy's is here as well. Nothing like a great burger and some Amy's!
google avatar

Caryn N.

Yelp
Well it will have to be another visit before you get pictures. A sister was a little hungry so I dove right in and forgot to do a review. But let me tell you if I'm going to make sure to get some great shots of my food before I eat it all up. All the burgers are yummy and the fries. I'm
google avatar

Brittney B.

Yelp
Sadly the food here is quite terrible and every once of the place both inside and out is caked in dirt and old ice/condiments. It's really a shame because this is a perfect one-stop shop. This review is not for Amy's ice cream because that's always stellar. Hat Creek is a better option. Clean, good food, and a friendly staff that don't treat you like an inconvenience.

Georgia S.

Yelp
I met some friends over here and I wasn't expecting much. I ordered the bacon burger and WOW it was good. Meat was juicy, all the toppings were delicious. Recommend if you're meeting your friends or family here.
google avatar

Robbie C.

Yelp
Phil's is great for a quick burger. The sweet potato fries are our favorite. Amy's ice cream is in the same store, so that's a nice treat as well. There is a great playground here to keep kids entertained.
google avatar

Kristin S.

Yelp
Burgers are just ok. I've definitely had better. Service was also pretty slow when I was there. If you do feel like having dessert after, then at least you have Amy's ice cream right there, which is pretty freaking good! You cannot skip the ice cream.
google avatar

Allison R.

Yelp
I love this place! The fries and sweet potato fries are great and I love that you can get a combo! The onion rings need more crunch but are okay. I love the grilled hot dog and the 78704 burger is heaven! I showed this place to my burger loving boyfriend and all he could say was that we were ordering it again! It's also pretty cheap!
google avatar

Katie T.

Yelp
The bread, the meats, the fixins are always fresh & delicious, I don't know that I've had onion rings this good before.. anywhere & the prices are Thank you Phil for keeping prices affordable with a quality product and service! #oldaustin

Yelp
Burger joint and an ice cream joint combined, with a play ground for the kiddos....Winning! Amys ice cream is my favorite ice cream in ATX, so that alone is a huge plus, but attach it to an awesome burger joint and you can't go wrong. The burgers at Phils are named after neighborhoods or zip codes in Austin. I ordered the 78750 burger which is now my new favorite burger. My wife got the Allendale which is a solid burger as well. My wife loves that they have an option for regular fries, sweet potato fries, or a mix fried that come with the burger. To be honest I'm not a fan of sweet potato fries but these weren't bad, probably some of the better ones I've tried. The burgers were hot fresh and delicious. The buns for the burgers were so soft seemed like they were made that day no mass produced buns like you get at the grocery store. The also have a few beers on tap and several can options to choose from as well. One knock on the place was that it was hot inside the building, but to be fair there are a lot of kids going in and out from the playground. Good spot to eat, have a beer, let the kids play, and last but not least grab an ice cream.

Ashlyn M.

Yelp
This was one of the best burgers I have had in Austin! I haven't been able to stop thinking about it lol. The meat was great, the bun was even greater and the veggies were fresh and crisp. 10/10
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Pretty decent burgers and fries. I wish they had more options though. Fountain drink machine is often out of something which is frustrating. Booths are awkward to sit in because they're so low compared to the tables. Bonus that Amy's Ice Cream is there.
google avatar

Austin T.

Yelp
Phil's is freaking amazing. Quality of food and service is too notch and I'll keep coming back to them for Al these reasons
google avatar

Peter G.

Yelp
Impressed with the quality of the food and the fast, thoughtful service they provide. The 78704 burger was tasty. Shoutout to Angela at the front for her professional and friendly service taking our order and bringing us our food! We will be back for sure in the future.

bennett p.

Yelp
Okay here's the deal. Phil's is an underrated burger here in the ATX. Couple of issues with the S. Lamar location though. 1. What comes out of the kitchen and the service, while not bad person se, is noticeably worse than the north Austin location. 2. I don't know if it's the laker on the tables or just lackluster side work, but every table in this place is hilariously sticky. Every table. Every day. I challenge the mgmt to go in and lay a napkin flat on the table and try to peel it off without leaving some behind. Ewww! 3. The Burnet location is a 4.5 star burger joint. If you have the time go there.
google avatar

Yelp
Really great spot for burgers and sandwiches! A couple friends took us here for dinner, and we were very happy with our meals! My husband ordered the regular cheese burger without onion and very much enjoyed it. His favorite parts was the bun they used, a sourdough bun. I ordered a grilled cheese, and added bacon (so good) and the grilled cheese comes on sourdough bread as well. It is seriously so good, and adds so much to the sandwich. It added that perfect sourdough taste, but also a little sweet, and also buttery. It was perfect, and I want a loaf of the bread immediately. The mixed fries were delicious! Regular potato fries were crispy and salty, and the sweet potato fries were so flavorful! I'm not typically a fan of sweet potato fries, cause seriously, how do you heat regular potato fries?! But these were awesome and I would absolutely order them again! If you like onion rings DO NOT get them here. They are pretty week. The batter is seriously under seasoned, so bland, and they weren't crispy at all. Very disappointing. The shop has an Amy's ice cream inside, so after dinner you can grab a scoop if you need something sweet! I got sweet cream and peach, and they were both so tasty, and paired so well together! They have a lot of indoor and outdoor seating, and the restrooms are located outside on the patio. I highly recommend eating here, great burgers/sandwiches & fries!
google avatar

Maria C.

Yelp
Our first stop here while roaming Austin and we enjoyed the food. We got The Violet Crown with the mix fries and the 78704 Burger. Both burgers were delicious and BIG! We also got a patty for our dog and she approved! The outside seating was calm and dog friendly. Five stars because the staff was friendly!
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Good toppings options along with the ability to customize. Shared building with an ice cream parlor, beer on tap or bottled, play structure. Great place to bring the kids and relax for a bit while they play. The beef patty itself was just okay. Felt like fast food.
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
I came here yesterday with my gf. Their Happy Hour is from 3pm til 7 PM on weekdays. Its 1/2 off for drafts and wines. I ordered the 78705 burger with sweet potato fries and a pearl snap. My gf got the Travis Heights with regular fries. I usually don't cut my burgers in half, but I had to do it because the burgers are tall and thick, mmm. The meat wasn't as well cooked as I read in previous reviews. Despite what my gf thinks, the sourdough bread pairs well with the burgers and are probably the on the better side of sourdough bread I have tried. The sweet potato fries are delicious and lightly salted enough to be impossible to stop eating. I finished those before I finished half my burger. The staff was courteous and efficient at taking the orders. However, it was a bit hard to hear the orders from the speaker they had inside. Be out the look out for your food being ready. Overall, they are worth the price!

Yelp
Ordered delivery a bacon cheeseburger with extra bacon. Paid for the extra and upon the unveiling one strip off bacon was on. To make matters worse they were closed by the time delivery reached me. I didn't give them the opportunity to fix though, I could have called next morning to report. This was the only thing that was wrong, I was certainly satisfied because the burger was still devoured. It was good, darn good. I'm sure lack of bacon was an oversight and they were closing. Trying again very soon, the one strip of bacon left me craving for more. Loved it!
